Abstract The electric-field response of a one-dimensional ring of interacting fermions, where the interactions are described by the extended Hubbard model, is investigated. By using an accurate real-time propagation scheme based on the Chebyshev expansion of the evolution operator, we uncover various nonlinear regimes for a range of interaction parameters that allows modeling of metallic and insulating (either charge density wave or spin density wave insulators) rings. The metallic regime appears at the phase boundary between the two insulating phases and provides the opportunity to describe either weakly or strongly correlated metals. We find that the fidelity susceptibility of the ground state as a function of magnetic flux piercing the ring provides a very good measure of the short-time response. Even completely different interacting regimes behave in a similar manner at short time scales as long as the ground-state fidelity susceptibility is the same. Depending on the strength of the electric field we find various types of responses: persistent currents in the insulating phase, a dissipative regime, or damped Bloch-like oscillations with varying frequencies or even irregular in nature. Furthermore, we also consider the dimerization of the ring and describe the response of a correlated band insulator. In this case the distribution of the energy levels is more clustered and the Bloch-like oscillations become even more irregular.

Abstract We report the suppression of the Hall effect in a mesoscopic Hall cross with a strong magnetic field only in the centre and vanishingly small outside, The local magnetic field is produced by placing Dy pillar on top of a structure with a high-mobility two-dimensional electron gas. The effect is found to be due to a sharp increase of the number of back-scattered and quasi-localised electron orbits. Abstract We observe the evolution of single self-assembled semiconductor quantum dots into quantum rings during AsBr3 in situ etching. The direct three-dimensional imaging of In(Ga)As nanostructures embedded in GaAs matrix is demonstrated by selective wet chemical etching combined with atomic force microscopy. Single neutral excitons confined in these quantum rings are studied by magneto-photoluminescence. Oscillations in the exciton radiative recombination energy and in the emission intensity are observed under an applied magnetic field. Further, we demonstrate that the period of the oscillations can be tuned by a gate potential that modifies the exciton confinement. The experimental results, combined with calculations, indicate that the exciton Aharonov-Bohm effect may account for the observed effects.

Abstract A Hg(Cd)Te insulator heterostructure hosts a two-dimensional electron system that can simulate the physics of Dirac fermions with only a single valley. We investigate the magnetotransport properties of this structure and show that, unlike most two-dimensional crystals with spin and valley coupled levels, the Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations exhibit a high spin polarization in the absence of any valley degree of freedom. This effect can be observed using magnetospectroscopy measurements for quantum well thicknesses corresponding to either the topologically trivial or quantum spin Hall phases. The pseudospin texture of the electrons near the Fermi level is also studied and we show that a tunable pseudospin-polarized quantum Hall liquid can only be observed for thicknesses corresponding to the inverted regime.

Abstract The ground state of a classical two-dimensional (2D) system with a finite number of charge particles, trapped by two positive impurity charges localized at a distance (z(0)) from the. 2D plane and separated from each other by a distance chi(p) are obtained. The impurities are allowed to carry more than one positive charge. This classical system can form a 2D-like classical molecule that exhibits structural transitions and spontaneous symmetry breaking as function of the separation between the positive charges before it transforms into two 2D-like classical atoms. We also observe structural transitions as a function of the dielectric constant of the substrate which supports the charged particles, in addition to broken symmetry states and unbinding of particles. Abstract We studied the optical Aharonov-Bohm effect for an exciton in a semiconductor quantum ring. A perpendicular electric field applied to a quantum ring with large height, is able to tune the exciton ground state energy such that it exhibits a weak observable Aharonov-Bohm oscillations. This Aharonov-Bohm effect is tunable in strength and period.

Abstract The dynamics of vortex matter in mesoscopic superconducting Corbino disk is strongly influenced by the discrete vortex structure arranged in shells. While in previous works the vortex dynamics has been studied in large (macroscopic) and in very small mesoscopic disks (containing only few shells), in the intermediate-size regime it is much more complex and unusual, due to: (i) the competition between the vortexvortex interaction and confinement and (ii) (in)commensurability among the vortex shells. We found that the interplay between these effects can result in a very unusual vortex dynamical behavior: (i) unconventional angular melting (i.e., propagating from the boundary, where the shear stress is minimum, towards the center) and (ii) unconventional dynamics of shells (i.e., the inversion of shell velocities with respect to the gradient driving force). This unusual behavior is found for different number of shells.

Abstract The effect of an electron-hole puddle on the electrical transport when governed by snake states in a bipolar graphene structure is investigated. Using numerical simulations we show that information on the size and position of the electron-hole puddle can be obtained using the dependence of the conductance on magnetic field and electron density of the gated region. The presence of the scatterer disrupts snake state transport which alters the conduction pattern. We obtain a simple analytical formula that connects the position of the electron-hole puddle with features observed in the conductance. The size of the electron-hole puddle is estimated from the magnetic field and gate potential that maximizes the effect of the puddle on the electrical transport.

Title Chainlike transitions in Wigner crystals : sequential versus nonsequential Type A1 Journal article

Abstract The structural transitions of the ground state of a system of repulsively interacting particles confined in a quasi-one-dimensional channel, and the effect of the interparticle interaction as well as the functional form of the confinement potential on those transitions are investigated. Although the nonsequential ordering of transitions (non-SOT), i.e., the 1 – 2 – 4 – 3 – 4 – 5 – 6 – ... sequence of chain configurations with increasing density, is widely robust as predicted in a number of theoretical studies, the sequential ordering of transitions (SOT), i.e., the 1 – 2 – 3 – 4 – 5 – 6 – ... chain, is found as the ground state for long-ranged interparticle interaction and hard-wall-like confinement potentials. We found an energy barrier between every two different phases around its transition point, which plays an important role in the preference of the system to follow either a SOT or a non-SOT. However, that preferential transition requires also the stability of the phases during the transition. Additionally, we analyze the effect of a small structural disorder on the transition between the two phases around its transition point. Our results show that a small deformation of the triangular structure changes dramatically the picture of the transition between two phases, removing in a considerable region the non-SOT in the system. This feature could explain the fact that the non-SOT is, up to now, not observed in experimental systems, and suggests a more advanced experimental setup to detect the non-SOT.

Title Reentrant dynamics of driven pancake vortices in layered superconductors Type A1 Journal article

Abstract The dynamics of driven pancake vortices in layered superconductors is studied using molecular-dynamics simulations. We found that, with increasing driving force, for strong interlayer coupling, the preexisted vortex lines either directly depin or first transform to two-dimensional (2D) pinned states before they are depinned, depending on the pinning strength. In a narrow region of pinning strengths, we found an interesting repinning process, which results in a negative differential resistance. For weak interlayer coupling, individually pinned pancake vortices first form disordered 2D flow and then transform to ordered three-dimensional (3D) flow with increasing driving force. However, for extremely strong pinning, the random pinning-induced thermal-like Langevin forces melt 3D vortex lines, which results in a persistent 2D flow in the fast-sliding regime. In the intermediate regime, the peak effect is found: With increasing driving force, the moving pancake vortices first crystallize to moving 3D vortex lines, and then these 3D vortex lines are melted, leading to the appearance of a reentrant 2D flow state. Our results are summarized in a dynamical phase diagram.

Abstract When the charge Z of an atom exceeds the critical value of 170, it will undergo a process called atomic collapse which triggers the spontaneous creation of electron-positron pairs. The high charge requirements have prevented the observation of this phenomenon with real atomic nuclei. However, thanks to the relativistic nature of the carriers in graphene, the same physics is accessible at a much lower scale. The atomic collapse analogue in graphene is realized using artificial nuclei which can be created via the deposition of impurities on the surface of graphene or using charged vacancies. These supercritically charged artificial nuclei trap electrons in a sequence of quasi-bound states which can be observed experimentally as resonances in the local density of states.

Abstract Structural, mechanical and electronic properties of two-dimensional single-layer hexagonal structures in the (111) crystal plane of IIIAs-ZnS systems (III = B, Ga and In) are studied by first-principles calculations based on density functional theory (DFT). Elastic and phonon dispersion relation display that 2D h-IIIAs systems (III = B, Ga and In) are both mechanical and dynamically stable. Electronic structures analysis show that the semiconducting nature of the 3D-IIIAs compounds is retained by their 2D single layer counterpart. Furthermore, density of states reveals the influence of sigma and pi bonding in the most stable geometry (planar or buckled) for 2D h-IIIAs systems. Calculations of elastic constants show that the Young's modulus, bulk modulus and shear modulus decrease for 2D h-IIIAs binary compounds as we move down on the group of elements of the periodic table. In addition, as the bond length between the neighboring cation-anion atoms increases, the 2D h-IIIAs binary compounds display less stiffness and more plasticity. Our findings can be used to understand the contribution of the r and p bonding in the most stable geometry (planar or buckled) for 2D h-IIIAs systems. Structural and electronic properties of h-IIIAs systems as a function of the number of layers have been also studied. It is shown that h-BAs keeps its planar geometry while both h-GAs and h-InAs retained their buckled ones obtained by their single layers. Bilayer h-IIIAs present the same bandgap nature of their counterpart in 3D. As the number of layers increase from 2 to 4, the bandgap width for layered h-IIIAs decreases until they become semimetal or metal. Interestingly, these results are different to those found for layered h-GaN. The results presented in this study for single and few-layer h-IIIAs structures could give some physical insights for further theoretical and experimental studies of 2D h-IIIV-like systems. Abstract Using the effective continuum model, the electron energy spectrum of gated bilayer graphene with a step-like region of decoupled graphene layers at the edge of the sample is studied. Different types of coupled-decoupled interfaces are considered, i.e., zigzag (ZZ) and armchair junctions, which result in significant different propagating states. Two non-valley-polarized conducting edge states are observed for ZZ type, which are mainly located around the ZZ-ended graphene layers. Additionally, we investigated both BA-BA and BA-AB domain walls in the gated bilayer graphene within the continuum approximation. Unlike the BA-BA domain wall, which exhibits gapped insulating behaviour, the domain walls surrounded by different stackings of bilayer regions feature valley-polarized edge states. Our findings are consistent with other theoretical calculations, such as from the tight-binding model and first-principles calculations, and agree with experimental observations. Title Magnetic field dependence of atomic collapse in bilayer graphene Type A1 Journal article

Abstract The spectrum of a Coulomb impurity in bilayer graphene is investigated as function of the strength of a perpendicular magnetic field for different values of the angular quantum number m and for different values of the gate voltage. We point out fundamental differences between the results from the two-band and four-band model. The supercritical instability and fall-to-center phenomena are investigated in the presence of a magnetic field. We find that in the four-band model the fall-to-center phenomenon occurs as in monolayer graphene, while this is not the case in the two-band model. We find that in a magnetic field the supercritical instability manifests itself as a series of anticrossings in the hole part of the spectrum for states coming from the low-energy band. However, we also find very distinct anticrossings in the electron part of the spectrum that continue into the hole part, which are related to the higher energy band of the four-band model. At these anticrossings, we find a very sharp peak in the probability density close to the impurity, reminiscent for the fall-to-center phenomenon. In this paper, these peculiar and interesting effects are studied for different magnetic field, interlayer coupling, and bias potential strengths.

Title Conductance fluctuations of monolayer GeSnH2$ in the topological phase using a low-energy effective tight-binding Hamiltonian Type A1 Journal article

Abstract An effective tight-binding (TB) Hamiltonian for monolayer GeSnH2 is constructed which has an inversion-asymmetric honeycomb structure. The low-energy band structure of our TB model agrees very well with previous ab initio calculations even under biaxial tensile strain. Our model predicts a phase transition at 7.5% biaxial tensile strain in agreement with DFT calculations. Upon 8.5% strain the system exhibits a band gap of 134 meV, suitable for room temperature applications. It is shown that an external applied magnetic field produces a special phase which is a combination of the quantum Hall (QH) and quantum spin Hall (QSH) phases; and at a critical magnetic field strength the QSH phase completely disappears. The topological nature of the phase transition is confirmed from: (1) the calculation of the Z(2) topological invariant, and (2) quantum transport properties of disordered GeSnH2 nanoribbons which allows us to determine the universality class of the conductance fluctuations. The application of an external applied magnetic field reduces the conductance fluctuations by a factor of root 2.

Title Electric-field-induced emergent electrical connectivity in graphene oxide Type A1 Journal article

Abstract Understanding the appearance of local electrical connectivity in liquid filled layered graphene oxide subjected to an external electric field is important to design electrically controlled smart permeable devices and also to gain insight into the physics behind electrical effects on confined water permeation. Motivated by recent experiments [K. G. Zhou et al. Nature (London) 559, 236 (2018)], we introduce a new model with random percolating paths for electrical connectivity in micron thick water filled layered graphene oxide, which mimics parallel resistors connected across the top and bottom electrodes. We find that a strong nonuniform radial electric field of the order similar to 10-50 mV/nm can be induced between layers depending on the current flow through the formed conducting paths. The maxima of the induced fields are not necessarily close to the electrodes and may be localized in the middle region of the layered material. The emergence of electrical connectivity and the associated electrical effects have a strong influence on the surrounding fluid in terms of ionization and wetting which subsequently determines the permeation properties.
