Abstract |
Atomic layer deposition (ALD) enables the conformal coating of porous materials, making the technique suitable for pore size tuning at the atomic level, e.g., for applications in catalysis, gas separation and sensing. It is, however, not straightforward to obtain information about the conformality of ALD coatings deposited in pores with diameters in the low mesoporous regime (<10 nm). In this work, it is demonstrated that in situ synchrotron based grazing incidence small angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS) can provide valuable information on the change in density and internal surface area during ALD of TiO2 in a porous titania film with small mesopores (3-8 nm). The results are shown to be in good agreement with in situ X-ray fluorescence data representing the evolution of the amount of Ti atoms deposited in the porous film. Analysis of both datasets indicates that the minimum pore diameter that can be achieved by ALD is determined by the size of the Ti-precursor molecule. |

Abstract |
Co and Fe nanowires and/or nanotubes are electrochemically synthesized through nanoporous membranes. By combining high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), and energy filtered TEM techniques, their structural and crystallographic characteristics are precisely determined. The synthesis was shown to produce cigar-shaped single monocrystalline Co and Fe nanowires with a diameter of about 60 nm. All wires were surrounded by an epitaxial oxide layer (Co3O4 or Fe3O4) of roughly 10 nm. The Fe nanotubes were built up of Fe3O4 nanocrystals. Electron diffraction showed that all nanocrystals had a common crystallographic axis, creating a pseudomonocrystalline wall in the nanotubes. (C) 2003 The Electrochemical Society. |

Abstract |
Platinumgold heteronanostructures comprising either dimer (PtAu) or coresatellite (Pt@Au) configurations were synthesized by means of a seeded growth procedure using platinum nanodendrites as seeds. Careful control of the reduction kinetics of the gold precursor can be used to direct the nucleation and growth of gold nanoparticles on either one or multiple surface sites simultaneously, leading to the formation of either dimers or coresatellite nanoparticles, respectively, in high yields. Characterization by electron tomography and high resolution electron microscopy provided a better understanding of the actual three-dimensional particle morphology, as well as the AuPt interface, revealing quasi-epitaxial growth of Au on Pt. The prepared PtAu bimetallic nanostructures are highly efficient catalysts for ethanol oxidation in alkaline solution, showing accurate selectivity, high sensitivity, and improved efficiency by generating higher current densities than their monometallic counterparts. |

Abstract |
Multiple branched manganese oxide hydroxide (MnOOH) nanorods prepared by a hydrothermal process were extensively studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). A model of the branch formation is proposed together with a study of the interface structure. The sword-like tip plays a crucial role for the nanorods to form different shapes. Importantly, the branching occurs at an angle of around either 57 degrees or 123 degrees. Specifically, a (111) twin plane can only be formed at the interface with a 123 degrees angle. The interfaces formed with a 57 degrees angle usually contain edge dislocations. Electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) demonstrates that the whole crystal has a uniform chemical composition. Interestingly, an epitaxial growth of Mn3O4 at the radial surface was also observed under electron beam irradiation; this is because of the rough purification of the products. The proposed mechanism is expected to shed light on the branched/dendrite nanostructure growth and to provide opportunities for further novel nanomaterial structure growth and design. |

Abstract |
The coupling of angstrom-sized electron probes with spin-polarized electronic transitions shows that the inelastically scattered probe electron is in a mixed state containing electron vortices with nonzero orbital angular momentum. These electrons create an asymmetric intensity distribution in energy filtered diffraction patterns, giving access to maps of the magnetic moments with atomic resolution. A feasibility experiment shows evidence of the predicted effect. Potential applications are column-by-column maps of magnetic ordering, and the creation of angstrom-sized free electrons with orbital angular momentum by inelastic scattering in a thin ferromagnetic foil. |

Abstract |
Pb cations in PbS quantum rods made from CdS quantum rods by successive complete cationic exchange reactions are partially re-exchanged for Cd cations. Using STEM-HAADF, we show that this leads to the formation of unique multiple dot-in-rod PbS/CdS heteronanostructures, with a photoluminescence quantum yield of 4555%. We argue that the formation of multiple dot-in-rods is related to the initial polycrystallinity of the PbS quantum rods, where each PbS crystallite transforms in a separate PbS/CdS dot-in-dot. Effective mass modeling indicates that electronic coupling between the different PbS conduction band states is feasible for the multiple dot-in-rod geometries obtained, while the hole states remain largely uncoupled. |

Abstract |
The influence of the stress state on the twinning rate and work hardening is studied in the case of an FeMnC TWIP steel strained in uniaxial tension, simple shear and rolling. The resulting stressstrain responses exhibit marked differences. The twinning rate, number of activated twinning systems in each grain, twin thickness and transmission of twins across grain boundaries are dependent on the imposed stress state during straining. Relationships between twin features and macroscopic work hardening rate are established. |

Abstract |
Surface plasmon modes in metallic nanostructures largely determine their optoelectronic properties. Such plasmon modes can be manipulated by changing the morphology of the nanoparticles or by bringing plasmonic nanoparticle building blocks close to each other within organized assemblies. We report the EELS mapping of such plasmon modes in pure Ag nanocubes, Au@Ag coreshell nanocubes, and arrays of Au@Ag nanocubes. We show that these arrays enable the creation of interesting plasmonic structures starting from elementary building blocks. Special attention will be dedicated to the plasmon modes in a triangular array formed by three nanocubes. Because of hybridization, a combination of such nanotriangles is shown to provide an antenna effect, resulting in strong electrical field enhancement at the narrow gap between the nanotriangles. |

Abstract |
Synchrotron X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were applied to quantitatively characterize the average particle size and size distribution of free-standing TiB2 particles and TiB2 particles in an insitu grown Al–TiB2 composite. The detailed evaluations were carried out by X-ray line profile analysis using the restrictedmoment method and multiplewhole profile fitting procedure (MWP). Both numericalmethods indicate that the formed TiB2 particles are well crystallized and free of crystal defects. The average particle size determined from different Bragg reflections by the restricted moment method ranges between 25 and 55 nm, where the smallest particle size is determined using the 110 reflection suggesting the highest lateral-growth velocity of (110) facets. TheMWP method has shown that the in-situ grown TiB2 particles have a very low dislocation density (~1011 m−2) and their size distribution can be described by a log-normal distribution. Good agreement was found between the results obtained from the restricted moment and MWP methods, which was further confirmed by TEM. |

Abstract |
A seriesof [TiN/TiAlN]nmultilayer coatingswith different bilayer numbers n=5, 10, 25, 50, and 100 were deposited on stainless steel substrate AISI 304 by a lateral rotating cathode arc technique in a flowing nitrogen atmosphere. The composition and microstructure of the coatings have been analyzed by using energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and conventional and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). XRD analysis shows that the preferential orientation growth along the (111) direction is reduced in the multilayer coatings. TEM analysis reveals that the grain size of the coatings decreases with increasing bilayer number. HRTEMimaging of the multilayer coatings shows a high density misfit dislocation between the TiN and TiAlN layers. The cross-plane thermal conductivity of the coatings was measured by a pulsed photothermal reflectance technique. With increasing bilayer number, the multilayer coatings' thermal conductivity decreases gradually. This reduction of thermal conductivity can be ascribed to increased phonon scattering due to the disruption of columnar structure, reduced preferential orientation, decreased grain size of the coatings and present misfit dislocations at the interfaces. |

Abstract |
Lanthanum ferrite nanofibers were electrospun from a chemical sol and calcined at 600 degrees C to obtain singlephase LaFeO3 (LFO) perovskite. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy in conjunction with 3D tomographic analysis confirmed an interwoven network of hollow and porous (surface) LFO nanofibers. Owing to their high surface area and p-type behavior, the nanofiber meshes showed high chemoselectivity toward reducing toxic gases (SO2, H2S) that could be reproducibly detected at very low concentrations (<1 ppm), well below the threshold values for occupational safety and health. An increased sensitivity was observed in the temperature range of 150-300 degrees C with maximum sensor response at 250 degrees C. The surface reaction at the heterogeneous solid (LFO)/gas (SO2) interface that confirmed the formation of La-2(SO4)(3) was investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Moreover, the LFO fibers showed a high selectivity in the detection of oxidizing and reducing gases. Whereas superior detection of NH3 and H2S was measured, little response was observed for CO and NO2. Finally, the integration of nanowire meshes in commercial sensor platforms was successfully demonstrated. |

Abstract |
Here, we show a novel solidsolidvapor (SSV) growth mechanism whereby epitaxial growth of heterogeneous semiconductor nanowires takes place by evaporation-induced cation exchange. During heating of PbSe-CdSe nanodumbbells inside a transmission electron microscope (TEM), we observed that PbSe nanocrystals grew epitaxially at the expense of CdSe nanodomains driven by evaporation of Cd. Analysis of atomic-resolution TEM observations and detailed atomistic simulations reveals that the growth process is mediated by vacancies. |

Abstract |
Glass treated on its surface with silver compounds and an aluminosilicate, such as ochre or clay, at higher temperatures (between 550 and 650 °C) accepts a wide variety of a yellow colour. It is the aim of this study to investigate the parameters of the manufacturing process affecting the final colour of silver stained glass and to correlate them with the final colour and colour intensity. Therefore, defined mixtures of ochre and a silver compound (AgCl, AgNO3, Ag2SO4, Ag3PO4, Ag2O) were prepared and applied on soda-lime glass. The firing process was modified within the range from 563 to 630 °C and glass samples were analysed after treatment with energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence analysis (EDXRF), scanning electron microscopy (SEM/EDX), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), as well as ion beam analysis (IBA) with an external beam. Within the scope of IBA simultaneous measurements using particle-induced X-ray emission (PIXE), particle-induced gamma-ray emission (PIGE), and Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS) were carried out in order to obtain the thickness of the Ag-rich surface layer and the depth distribution of Ag. By means of TEM the microstructure of the silver particles was visualised. XRF results show that the lowest amount of Ag could be detected on glass samples treated with silver stain mixtures containing AgCl and Ag2O. A low kiln temperature (e.g. 563 °C) results in a higher silver concentration at the surface and lower penetration depths. Furthermore, the results obtained with SEM/EDX at cross-sections of the glass samples could be confirmed by PIXE, PIGE, RBS, and TEM. |

Abstract |
Si nanowires with a ⟨111⟩ orientation, synthesized by vapor-liquid-solid process with low silane partial pressure reactant and gold as the catalyst, are known to exhibit sawtooth facets containing gold adsorbates. We report herein the study of the nanowire morphology by means of transmission electron microscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy. The nanowires consist of faceted sidewalls. The number of the sidewalls changes from 12 to 6 along the growth axis, giving rise to nanowires with an irregular hexagonal cross section at their base. The sidewalls are covered with Au-rich clusters. Their facets also exhibit atomic structures that reveal the presence of gold, resulting from the diffusion of gold during the growth. Based on these observations, the tapering of the nanowire is found to be related to two contributions: the reduction in the catalyst particle size during the growth and lateral overgrowth from the direct incorporation of Si species onto the nanowire sidewalls. Because the rearrangement of atoms at surfaces and interfaces might affect the growth kinetics, the trigonal symmetry as well as the higher lateral growth rate on the widest sidewalls are explained from the existence of an interfacial atomic structure with two inequivalent parts in the unit cell. Finally, spectroscopic measurements were performed on the major facets and revealed a metallic behavior at 77 K. |

Abstract |
This work provides values of electron scattering 002 structure factors for InxGa1-xAs as a function of the In concentration x=0 to 1. These results allow accurate compositional analysis of pseudomorphically grown InxGa1-xAs/GaAs layers by transmission electron microscopy methods relying on the chemical sensitivity of the (002) beam. The calculations go beyond the limits of the isolated atom approximation, because they take into account charge redistribution effects between atomic sites in the crystal, strain, and static atomic displacements. The computations were performed by the full potential linearized augmented plane-wave method using a generalized gradient approximation for the exchange and correlation part of the potential. The calculations of strained InxGa1-xAs correspond to the strain state in specimens with large, small, and intermediate thickness in the electron beam direction. Additionally, the effect of static atomic displacements is taken into account. All results are listed in a parameterized form. The calculated 002 structure factor vanishes at an In concentration of 16.4%. This value is in a good agreement with previously reported experimental measurements. Hence, our results are a significant improvement with respect to the isolated atom approximation which is conventionally applied in transmission electron microscopy simulations, and which predicts a value of 22.5%. |

Abstract |
Composite micro- and mesoporous materials are synthesized using zeolite Beta nanoparticles without the need for a structure directing agent to form the mesopores. This leads to important ecological and economical advantages. The influence of the way of cooling the aged nanoparticles solution on the formation of the composite materials has been studied. The materials have been characterized towards porosity by N2-sorption, towards zeolitic properties by TGA, DRIFT, XRD and TEM, towards aluminium content by EPMA. All prepared structures possess zeolitic properties. However, the method of cooling down of the aged seeds leads to differences in the porosity and intensity of the zeolitic characteristics. |

Abstract |
Polyester-grafted polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) nanohybrids selectively produced by ring-opening polymerization of ε-caprolactone and L,L-lactide (A.-L. Goffin, E. Duquesne, S. Moins, M. Alexandre, Ph. Dubois, Eur. Polym. Journal, 2007, 43, 4103) were studied as masterbatches by melt-blending within their corresponding commercial polymeric matrices, i.e., poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) and poly(L,L-lactide) (PLA). For the sake of comparison, neat POSS nanoparticles were also dispersed in PCL and PLA. The objective was to prepare aliphatic polyester-based nanocomposites with enhanced crystallization behavior, and therefore, enhanced thermo-mechanical properties. Wide-angle X-ray scattering and transmission electron microscopy attested for the dispersion of individualized POSS nanoparticles in the resulting nanocomposite materials only when the polyester-grafted POSS nanohybrid was used as a masterbatch. The large impact of such finely dispersed (grafted) nanoparticles on the crystallization behavior for the corresponding polyester matrices was noticed, as evidenced by differential scanning calorimetry analysis. Indeed, well-dispersed POSS nanoparticles acted as efficient nucleating sites, significantly increasing the crystallinity degree of both PCL and PLA matrices. As a result, a positive impact on thermo-mechanical properties was highlighted by dynamic mechanical thermal analysis. |

Abstract |
The recent demonstration of electron vortex beams has opened up the new possibility of studying orbital angular momentum (OAM) in the interaction between electron beams and matter. To this aim, methods to analyze the OAM of an electron beam are fundamentally important and a necessary next step. We demonstrate the measurement of electron beam OAM through a variety of techniques. The use of forked holographic masks, diffraction from geometric apertures, and diffraction from a knife edge and the application of an astigmatic lens are all experimentally demonstrated. The viability and limitations of each are discussed with supporting numerical simulations. |

Abstract |
Nanocrystalline ZnO and ZnO(Ga) samples with different gallium content were prepared by wet-chemical method. Introduction of gallium leads to the increase of amount of weak acid sites such as surface hydroxyl groups. Gas sensing properties toward 0.22 ppm H2S and NO2 were studied at 100450 °C by DC conductance measurements. The optimal temperature for gas sensing experiments was determined. Sensor signal toward H2S decreases with increase of Ga concentration. The dependence of ZnO(Ga) sensor signal to NO2 on the gallium content has non-monotonous character, which correlates with the change of conductivity of the samples in air and concentration of paramagnetic donor states. |

Abstract |
Exfoliated graphite samples (EG) with different bulk densities were prepared by the exfoliation of expandable graphite under a thermal shock regime. As a conductive filler, EG has been incorporated successfully into the coal tar pitch matrix by mechanical mixing. The conducting behavior of the composite was interpreted based on the percolation theory. The percolation threshold of the EG/pitch conducting composites at room temperature was as low as 1.5 wt% and did not depend on the bulk density of the EG used. By means of thermogravimetry the improvement of thermal stability of the composites in comparison with pure pitches was detected. The phenomenon was ascribed to heat shielding effect of the EG particles evidenced by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry. |

Abstract |
In electron tomography, the fidelity of the 3D reconstruction strongly depends on the employed reconstruction algorithm. In this paper, the properties of SIRT, TVM and DART reconstructions are studied with respect to having only a limited number of electrons available for imaging and applying different angular sampling schemes. A well-defined realistic model is generated, which consists of tubular domains within a matrix having slab-geometry. Subsequently, the electron tomography workflow is simulated from calculated tilt-series over experimental effects to reconstruction. In comparison with the model, the fidelity of each reconstruction method is evaluated qualitatively and quantitatively based on global and local edge profiles and resolvable distance between particles. Results show that the performance of all reconstruction methods declines with the total electron dose. Overall, SIRT algorithm is the most stable method and insensitive to changes in angular sampling. TVM algorithm yields significantly sharper edges in the reconstruction, but the edge positions are strongly influenced by the tilt scheme and the tubular objects become thinned. The DART algorithm markedly suppresses the elongation artifacts along the beam direction and moreover segments the reconstruction which can be considered a significant advantage for quantification. Finally, no advantage of TVM and DART to deal better with fewer projections was observed. |

Abstract |
The plasmonic properties of metal nanoparticles have acquired great importance because of their potential applications in very diverse fields. Metal nanoparticles with localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPR) in the near-infrared (NIR, 7501300 nm) are of particular interest because tissues, blood, and water display low absorption in this spectral range, thus facilitating biomedical applications. Cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC) was used to induce the seedless formation of highly anisotropic, twisted single crystalline Au nanoparticles in a single step. The LSPR of the obtained particles can be tuned from 600 nm up to 1400 nm by simply changing the reaction temperature or the reagents concentrations. The tunability of the LSPR is closely associated with significant changes in the final particle morphology, which was studied by advanced electron microscopy techniques (3D Tomography and HAADF-STEM). Kinetic experiments were carried out to establish the growth mechanism, suggesting that slow kinetics together with the complexation of the gold salt precursor to CTAC are key factors favoring the formation of these anisotropic particles. |
