Abstract |
Solar-light driven oxidation of benzylic alcohols over photocatalysts endows significant prospects in value-added organics evolution owing to its facile, inexpensive and sustainable process. However, the unsatisfactory performance of actual photocatalysts due to the inefficient charge separation, low photoredox potential and sluggish surface reaction impedes the practical application of this process. Herein, we developed an innovative Z-Scheme Cs3BiBr9 nanoparticles@porous C3N4 tubes (CBB-NP@P-tube-CN) heterojunction photocatalyst for highly selective benzyl alcohol oxidation. Such composite combining increased photo-oxidation potential, Z-Scheme charge migration route as well as the structural advantages of porous tubular C3N4 ensures the accelerated mass and ions diffusion kinetics, the fast photoinduced carriers dissociation and sufficient photoredox potentials. The CBB-NP@P-tube-CN photocatalyst demonstrates an exceptional performance for selective photo-oxidation of benzylic alcohol into benzaldehyde with 19, 14 and 3 times higher benzylic alcohols conversion rate than those of C3N4 nanotubes, Cs3Bi2Br9 and Cs3Bi2Br9@bulk C3N4 photocatalysts, respectively. This work offers a sustainable photocatalytic system based on lead-free halide perovskite toward large scale solar-light driven value-added chemicals production. |

Abstract |
The voltage decay of Li -rich layered oxide cathode materials results in the deterioration of cycling performance and continuous energy loss, which seriously hinders their application in the high-energy – density lithium -ion battery (LIB) market. However, the origin of the voltage decay mechanism remains controversial due to the complex influences of transition metal (TM) migration, oxygen release, indistinguishable surface/bulk reactions and the easy intra/inter-crystalline cracking during cycling. We investigated the direct cause of voltage decay in micrometer -scale single -crystal Li 1.2 Mn 0.54 Ni 0.13 Co 0.13 O 2 (SC-LNCM) cathode materials by regulating the cut-off voltage. The redox of TM and O 2- ions can be precisely controlled by setting different voltage windows, while the cracking can be restrained, and surface/bulk structural evaluation can be monitored because of the large single crystal size. The results show that the voltage decay of SC-LNCM is related to the combined effect of cation rearrangement and oxygen release. Maintaining the discharge cutoff voltage at 3 V or the charging cutoff voltage at 4.5 V effectively mitigates the voltage decay, which provides a solution for suppressing the voltage decay of Lirich and Mn-based layered oxide cathode materials. Our work provides significant insights into the origin of the voltage decay mechanism and an easily achievable strategy to restrain the voltage decay for Li -rich and Mn-based cathode materials. |

Abstract |
Several TEM techniques are used to characterise the local structure of low dimensional forms of carbon. HREM is particularly useful to describe the defect structure of thin films of diamond or fullerenes and C-60-C-70 nanoclusters. A columnar form of graphite is analysed, mainly by electron diffraction which allowed us to propose a growth mechanism. Diffraction contrast dark field microscopy, in combination with electron diffraction, allows a detailed characterisation of carbon nanotubes; e.g. the chirality distribution of tubes in ropes of single wall tubes is studied by selected area electron diffraction. Abstract |
The pinning mechanism of MOCVD-grown YBCO coated conductors with Y2O3 precipitates was investigated by angle-resolved transport measurement of Je in a wide range of temperature and magnetic fields. Aside from the Y2O3 nanoprecipitates, a-axis grains and threading dislocation along the c-axis were found in the YBCO layer. The Y2O3 precipitates are less effective pinning centers at lower temperature. The tapes with precipitates show a higher anisotropy with larger J(c) at H parallel to ab than H parallel to c. This behavior was attributed to the preferred alignment of the nanoprecipitates along the ab-plane. |

Abstract |
La1-xCaxMnO3-delta (LCMO) thin films are grown by pulsed laser deposition on a (100) SrTiO3 substrate at temperatures between 530 degrees C and 890 degrees C. The magnetotransport properties show a high negative magnetoresistance and a shift of the maximum of the R(T) curve as function of temperature. The Curie temperature changes with deposition temperature and film quality in the range of 100-220K. The film quality is characterised by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy (TEM); film and target compositions were verified by atomic emission spectroscopy. The local structure of the film depends on the growth conditions and substrate temperature. TEM reveals a slight distortion of the film leading to a breakdown of the symmetry from orthorhombic to monoclinic. At the highest growth temperatures, a well defined interface is observed within the LCMO film, parallel to the substrate surface; this interface divides the film into two lamellae with a different microstructure. The lamella close to the substrate is perfectly coherent with the substrate, suggesting that it is strained as a result of the lattice parameter mismatch; the upper lamella shows a typical domain structure with unusual translation interfaces characterised by a displacement vector of the type 1/2[010](m) and 1/2[001](m) when referred ten the monoclinic lattice. |

Abstract |
The atomic structure of single-wall carbon nanotube bundles produced by three different techniques has been characterized by electron diffraction and microscopy. Small bundles produced by Catalytical Chemical Vapor Deposition (CCVD) exhibit only one or two tube chiralities within a single bundle while bundles produced by arc-discharge or laser-ablation exhibit more chiralities. A detailed analysis of the central line of diffraction is also presented. The CCVD nanotubes present more intense spots around 1.7 Angstrom(-1) < k < 2Angstrom(-1) (k is the momentum transfer) compared to what is observed for nanotubes produced by other methods. Amongst the possible explanation for such an anomaly, we put forward that in this range of momentum transfer, the relative tube orientations and translations are important for what concerns the interpretation of the diffraction peaks intensities. |

Abstract |
Ag nanocluster-doped glasses have been prepared by a conventional melt-quenching method. The effect of melt temperature and dwell time on the formation of Ag nanoclusters and Ag nanoparticles in simple host oxyfluoride glasses has been studied. The increase of melt temperature and dwell time results in the dissolution of Ag nanoparticles and substantial red-shift of absorption and photoluminescence spectra of the prepared glasses. The quantum yield of the glasses is similar to 5% and does not depend on melt temperature and dwell time. The prepared glasses may be used as red phosphors or down-conversion layers for solar-cells. |
