Abstract: Two CoSi2/Si1-xGex/Si(100) heterostructures, with different Ge content, made by molecular beam epitaxy are characterized by high resolution electron microscopy. In general, the interface between the CoSi2 thin film and the Si1-xGex layer is of a high structural quality and the strained Si1-xGex layer exhibits few defects. For both samples, different interface structures are present, although the dominant interfacial configuration is similar to the unreconstructed interface present at the CoSi2/Si(100) interface. Only occasionally (2x1) reconstructed interface regions are found which are just a few nanometers in length. Phenomena such as Ge segregation and the introduction of defects are also observed in the Si1-xGex layer. We attribute the minimal presence of the reconstructed interface to both the (2x8):Si1-xGex(100) surface reconstruction and the Ge segregation that takes place. “Growth of pure and doped Rb2ZnCl4and K2ZnCl4 single crystals by Czochralski technique”. Stefan M, Nistor SV, Mateescu DC, Abakumov AM, Journal of crystal growth 200, 148 (1999). http://doi.org/10.1016/S0022-0248(98)01247-0
Abstract: High-quality single crystals of Rb2ZnCl4 and K2ZnCl4, pure or doped with Cu, Mn, Cd, Tl, Sn, Pb and In cations, were grown by Czochralski technique in argon atmosphere, using an experimental setup that allows direct visual access to the whole growth zone. Slowly cooled crystals exhibit excellent cleavage properties. Fastly cooled crystals do cleave poorly. As shown by X-ray diffraction studies, such K2ZnCl4 samples exhibit inclusions of the high-temperature Pmcn phase with lattice parameters a = 7.263(2) Angstrom, b = 12.562(2) Angstrom and c = 8.960(4) Angstrom in the P2(1) cn room temperature stable phase. ESR and optical spectroscopy studies revealed the localization and valence state of the cation dopants. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: In situ irradiation experiments in a high resolution electron microscope JEOL-4000EX at room temperature resulted in discovery of the isolated and combined clustering of vacancies and self-interstitial atoms on {111}- and {113}-habit planes both leading to an extended defect formation in Si crystals. The type of the defect is strongly affected by the type of supersaturation of point defects depending on the crystal thickness during electron irradiation. Because of the existence of energy barriers against recombination of interstitials with the extended aggregates of vacancies, a large family of intermediate defect configurations (IDCs) is formed on {113}- and {111}-habit planes at a low temperature under interstitial supersaturation in addition to the well-known {133}-defects of interstitial type. The formation of metastable IDCs inside vacancy aggregates prevents a way of recombination of defects in extended shape.

“Electron microscopy investigation of ternary \gamma-brass-type precipitation in a Ni39.6Mn47.5Ti12.9 alloy”. Abstract: Homogenized Ni39.6Mn47.5T12.9 material was investigated by different electron microscopy techniques. Apart from the martensite precursor distortions typical for B2 phase alloys undergoing a thermoelastic martensitic transformation upon cooling, coherent dodecahedron-shaped precipitates with sizes between 20 and 100 nm and faceted by lozenge shapes of {110}-type planes are observed. Selected-area and microdiffraction patterns reveal an overall unit cell with a size of 3 x 3 x 3 units of the bcc lattice of the matrix and a body-centred symmetry without screw axes. Finally a ternary gamma-brass-type atomic structure of space group 14(3) over bar m is suggested for these precipitates in accordance with the obtained symmetry constraints, the energy-dispersive X-ray measurements and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy images. This is the first time this type of structure is found in an alloy completely consisting of transition-metal elements.

Abstract: We have investigated epitaxially grown single-crystalline Ca-doped LaMnO3 thin films using the pulsed laser deposition technique in a case study aimed to explore the possibilities buried in epitaxial stress tailoring in order to control the transport properties of CMR materials beyond the limits set by equilibrium thermodynamics. Depending on the film thickness there is an abrupt transition from pseudomorphic to epitaxial granular growth observable which is related to the epitaxial strain of the films. This is associated with microscopic stress relaxation and leads to well controllable modifications of the atomic arrangements of the Mn-O sublattice in the films. Due to the interrelation of double exchange, spin-, charge- and orbital ordering and the Jahn-Teller effect mediated coupling of the electronic system to the crystal lattice, the magnetotransport properties of the firms can be modified in a controllable way.

T2 –, Conference on Microscopy of Semiconducting Materials, MAR 22-25, 1999, UNIV OXFORD, OXFORD, ENGLAND , 495 (1999)
Abstract: In situ HREM irradiation of (110) FZ-Si crystals covered with thin Si3N4 films was carried out in a JEOL-4000EX microscope, operated at 400 keV at room temperature. It is found that clustering of vacancies on (113) planes is realised in a Si layer close to the Si-Si3N4 interface at the initial stage of irradiation. Further aggregation of self-interstitials inside vacancy clusters is considered as an alternative way of point defect recombination in extended shape, to be accomplished with the formation of the extended defects of interstitial type upon interstitial supersaturation.
