Abstract |
The interplay between quantum Hall states and Cooper pairs is usually hindered by the suppression of the superconducting state due to the strong magnetic fields needed to observe the quantum Hall effect. From this point of view, graphene is special since it allows the creation of strong pseudomagnetic fields due to strain. We show that in a Josephson junction made of strained graphene, Cooper pairs will diffuse into the strained region. The pair correlation function will be sublattice polarized due to the polarization of the local density of states in the zero pseudo-Landau level. We uncover two regimes: (1) one in which the cyclotron radius is larger than the junction length, in which case the supercurrent will be enhanced, and (2) the long junction regime where the supercurrent is strongly suppressed because the junction becomes an insulator. In the latter case quantized Hall states form and Andreev scattering at the normal/superconducting interface will induce edge states. Our numerical calculation has become possible due to an extension of the Chebyshev-Bogoliubovde Gennes method to computations on video cards (GPUs). |

Abstract |
To date, several experimental groups reported measurements of the thickness dependence of T-c of atomically uniform single-crystalline Pb nanofilms. The reported amplitude of the T-c oscillations varies significantly from one experiment to another. Here we propose that the reason for this unresolved issue is an interplay of the quantum-size variations in the single-electron density of states with thickness-dependent oscillations in the phonon-mediated electron-electron coupling. Such oscillations in the coupling depend on the substrate material, the quality of the interface, the protection cover, and other details of the fabrication process, changing from one experiment to another. This explains why the available data do not exhibit one-voice consistency about the amplitude of the T-c oscillations. Our analyses are based on a numerical solution of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations for a superconducting slab. |

Abstract |
The structural phase transitions with electric-quadrupole long-range order in NpO2 (Fm (3) over barm-->Pn (3) over barm) and UO2 (Fm (3) over barm-->Pa (3) over bar) are analyzed from a group theoretical point of view. In both cases, the symmetry lowering involves three quadrupolar components belonging to the irreducible representation T-2g (Gamma(5)) of O-h and condensing in a triple-q structure at the X point of the Brillouin zone. The Pa (3) over bar structure is close to Pn (3) over barm, but allows for oxygen displacements. The Pa (3) over bar ordering leads to an effective electrostatic attraction between electronic quadrupoles while the Pn (3) over barm ordering results in a repulsion between them. It is concluded that the Pn (3) over barm structure can be stabilized only through some additional process such as strengthening of the chemical bonding between Np and O. We also derive the relevant structure-factor amplitudes for Pn (3) over barm and Pa (3) over bar, and the effect of domains on resonant x-ray scattering experiments. |

Abstract |
Nonlinear dynamics of Josephson vortices (fluxons) in artificial stacks of superconducting-normal-superconducting Josephson junctions under simultaneously applied time-periodic ac and constant biasing dc currents is studied using the time dependent Ginzburg-Landau formalism with a Lawrence-Doniach extension. At zero external magnetic field and dc biasing current the resistive state of the system is characterized by periodic nucleation and annihilation of fluxon-antifluxon pairs, relative positions of which are determined by the state of neighboring junctions. Due to the mutual repulsive interaction, fluxons in different junctions move out of phase. Their collective motion can be synchronized by adding a small ac component to the biasing dc current. Coherent motion of fluxons is observed for a broad frequency range of the applied drive. In the coherent state the maximal output voltage, which is proportional to the number of junctions in the stack, is observed near the characteristic frequency of the system determined by the crossing of the fluxons across the sample. However, in this frequency range the dynamically synchronized state has an alternative-a less ordered state with smaller amplitude of the output voltage. Collective behavior of the junctions is strongly affected by the sloped sidewalls of the stack. Synchronization is observed only for weakly trapezoidal cross sections, whereas irregular motion of fluxons is observed for larger slopes of the sample edge. |

Abstract |
We revisit the problem of the dynamic response of a superconducting bridge after abruptly switching on the supercritical current. In contrast to previous theoretical works we take into account spatial gradients and use both the local temperature approach and the kinetic equation for the distribution function of quasiparticles. We find that the temperature dependence of the finite delay time t(d) in the voltage response is model dependent and relatively large t(d) is connected with temporary cooling of quasiparticles during decay of superconducting order parameter vertical bar Delta vertical bar in time. It turns out that the presence of even small inhomogeneities in the bridge or finite length of the homogenous bridge favors a local suppression of vertical bar Delta vertical bar during the dynamic response. It results in a decrease of the delay time, in comparison with the spatially uniform model, due to the diffusion of nonequilibrium quasiparticles from the region with locally suppressed vertical bar Delta vertical bar. In the case when the current density is maximal near the edge of a not very wide bridge the delay time is mainly connected with the time needed for the nucleation (entrance) of the first vortex and t(d) could be tuned by a weak external magnetic field. We also find that a short alternating current pulse (sinusoidlike) with zero time average may result in a nonzero time- averaged voltage response where its sign depends on the phase of the ac current. |

Abstract |
We apply neutron diffraction, high-resolution synchrotron x-ray diffraction, magnetization measurements, electronic structure calculations, and quantum Monte-Carlo simulations to unravel the structure and magnetism of (CuCl)LaTa2O7. Despite the pseudo-tetragonal crystallographic unit cell, this compound features an orthorhombic superstructure, similar to the Nb-containing (CuX)LaNb2O7 with X = Cl and Br. The spin lattice entails dimers formed by the antiferromagnetic fourth-neighbor coupling J(4), as well as a large number of nonequivalent interdimer couplings quantified by an effective exchange parameter J(eff). In (CuCl)LaTa2O7, the interdimer couplings are sufficiently strong to induce the long-range magnetic order with the Neel temperature T-N similar or equal to 7 K and the ordered magnetic moment of 0.53 mu(B), as measured with neutron diffraction. This magnetic behavior can be accounted for by J(eff)/J(4) similar or equal to 1.6 and J(4) similar or equal to 16 K. We further propose a general magnetic phase diagram for the (CuCl)LaNb2O7-type compounds, and explain the transition from the gapped spin-singlet (dimer) ground state in (CuCl)LaNb2O7 to the long-range antiferromagnetic order in (CuCl)LaTa2O7 and (CuBr)LaNb2O7 by an increase in the magnitude of the interdimer couplings J(eff)/J(4), with the (CuCl)LaM2O7 (M = Nb, Ta) compounds lying on different sides of the quantum critical point that separates the singlet and long-range-ordered magnetic ground states. |

Abstract |
Carefully converged calculations are performed for the band gap of ZnO within many-body perturbation theory (G0W0 approximation). The results obtained using four different well-established plasmon-pole models are compared with those of explicit calculations without such models (the contour-deformation approach). This comparison shows that, surprisingly, plasmon-pole models depending on the f-sum rule gives less precise results. In particular, it confirms that the band gap of ZnO is underestimated in the G0W0 approach as compared to experiment, contrary to the recent claim of Shih et al. [ Phys. Rev. Lett. 105 146401 (2010)]. |

Abstract |
The recently discovered structural transition in polymerized KC60 at about 50 K results in a doubling of the unit cell volume and accompanies the metal-insulator transition. Here we show that the ((a) over right arrow+(c) over right arrow,(b) over right arrow,(a) over right arrow-(c) over right arrow) superstructure results from small orientational charge density waves along the polymer chains and concomitant displacements of the surrounding K+ ions. The effect is specific for the space group Pmnn of KC60 and is absent in RbC60 and CsC60 (space group I2/m). The mechanism is relevant for the metal-insulator transition. |

Abstract |
Both even- and odd-numbered neutral carbon clusters Cn (n=210) are systematically studied using the energy minimization method and the modified Brenner potential for the carbon-carbon interactions. Many stable configurations were found, and several new isomers are predicted. For the lowest energy stable configurations we obtained their binding energies and bond lengths. We found that for n5 the linear isomer is the most stable one while for n>5 the monocyclic isomer becomes the most stable. The latter was found to be regular for all studied clusters. The dependence of the binding energy for linear and cyclic clusters versus the cluster size n (n=210) is found to be in good agreement with several previous calculations, in particular with ab initio calculations as well as with experimental data for n=25. |

Abstract |
Starting from an empirical force constant model of valence interactions and calculating by Ewalds method the ion-ion force constants, we derive the dynamical matrix for a monolayer crystal of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN). The phonon dispersion relations are calculated. The interplay between valence and Coulomb forces is discussed. It is shown by analytical methods that the longitudinal and the transverse optical (LO and TO) phonon branches for in-plane motion are degenerate at the Γ point of the Brillouin zone. Away from Γ, the LO branch exhibits pronounced overbending. It is found that the nonanalytic Coulomb contribution to the dynamical matrix causes a linear increase of the LO branch with increasing wave vector starting at Γ. This effect is general for two-dimensional (2D) ionic crystals. Performing a long-wavelength expansion of the dynamical matrix, we use Borns perturbation method to calculate the elastic constants (tension coefficients). Since the crystal is noncentrosymmetric, internal displacements due to relative shifts between the two sublattices (B and N) contribute to the elastic constants. These internal displacements are responsible for piezoelectric and dielectric phenomena. The piezoelectric stress constant and the dielectric susceptibility of 2D h-BN are calculated. |

Abstract |
The lattice dynamics of low-frequency rigid-plane modes in metallic (graphene multilayers, GML) and in insulating (hexagonal boron-nitride multilayers, BNML) layered crystals is investigated. The frequencies of shearing and compression (stretching) modes depend on the layer number N and are presented in the form of fan diagrams. The results for GML and BNML are very similar. In both cases, only the interactions (van der Waals and Coulomb) between nearest-neighbor planes are effective, while the interactions between more distant planes are screened. A comparison with recent Raman scattering results on low-frequency shear modes in GML [Tan et al., Nat. Mater., in press, doi: 10.1038/nmat3245, (2012)] is made. Relations with the low-lying rigid-plane phonon dispersions in the bulk materials are established. Master curves, which connect the fan diagram frequencies for any given N, are derived. Static and dynamic thermal correlation functions for rigid-layer shear and compression modes are calculated. The results might be of use for the interpretation of friction force experiments on multilayer crystals. |

Abstract |
We present a unified theory of the phonon dispersions and elastic properties of graphene, graphite, and graphene multilayer systems. Starting from a fifth-nearest-neighbor force-constant model derived from full in-plane phonon dispersions of graphite [Mohr et al., Phys. Rev. B 76, 035439 (2007)], we use Born's long-wave method to calculate the tension and bending coefficients of graphene. Extending the model by interplanar interactions, we study the phonon dispersions and the elastic constants of graphite, and the phonon spectra of graphene multilayers. We find that the inner displacement terms due to sublattice shifts between inequivalent C atoms are quantitatively important in determining the elastomechanical properties of graphene and of graphite. The overall agreement between theory and experiment is very satisfactory. We investigate the evolution from graphene to graphite by studying the increase in the rigid plane optical mode as a function of the number of layers N. At N=10 the graphite value B2g1127 cm−1 is attained within a few percent. |

Abstract |
Large-scale atomistic simulations using the reactive force field approach are implemented to investigate the thermomechanical properties of fluorinated graphene (FG). A set of parameters for the reactive force field potential optimized to reproduce key quantum mechanical properties of relevant carbon-fluorine cluster systems are presented. Molecular dynamics simulations are used to investigate the thermal rippling behavior of FG and its mechanical properties and compare them with graphene, graphane and a sheet of boron nitride. The mean square value of the height fluctuations < h(2)> and the height-height correlation function H(q) for different system sizes and temperatures show that FG is an unrippled system in contrast to the thermal rippling behavior of graphene. The effective Young's modulus of a flake of fluorinated graphene is obtained to be 273 N/m and 250 N/m for a flake of FG under uniaxial strain along armchair and zigzag directions, respectively. Abstract |
Thermal fluctuations of single layer hydrogenated graphene (graphane) are investigated using large scale atomistic simulations. By analyzing the mean square value of the height fluctuations < h(2)> and the height-height correlation function H(q) for different system sizes and temperatures, we show that hydrogenated graphene is an unrippled system in contrast to graphene. The height fluctuations are bounded, which is confirmed by a H(q) tending to a constant in the long wavelength limit instead of showing the characteristic scaling law q(4-eta)(eta similar or equal to 0.85) predicted by membrane theory. This unexpected behavior persists up to temperatures of at least 900 K and is a consequence of the fact that in graphane the thermal energy can be accommodated by in-plane bending modes, i.e., modes involving C-C-C bond angles in the buckled carbon layer, instead of leading to significant out-of-plane fluctuations that occur in graphene. |

Abstract |
The thermodynamic properties of the electron gas in multilayer graphene depend strongly on the number of layers and the type of stacking. Here we analyze how those properties change when we vary the number of layers for rhombohedral stacked multilayer graphene and compare our results with those from a conventional two-dimensional electron gas. We show that the highly degenerate zero-energy Landau level which is partly filled with electrons and partly with holes has a strong influence on the values of the different thermodynamic quantities. |

Abstract |
Using atomistic simulations we investigate the thermodynamical properties of a single atomic layer of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN). The thermal induced ripples, heat capacity, and thermal lattice expansion of large scale h-BN sheets are determined and compared to those found for graphene (GE) for temperatures up to 1000 K. By analyzing the mean-square height fluctuations < h(2)> and the height-height correlation function H(q) we found that the h-BN sheet is a less stiff material as compared to graphene. The bending rigidity of h-BN (i) is about 16% smaller than the one of GE at room temperature (300 K), and (ii) increases with temperature as in GE. The difference in stiffness between h-BN and GE results in unequal responses to external uniaxial and shear stress and different buckling transitions. In contrast to a GE sheet, the buckling transition of a h-BN sheet depends strongly on the direction of the applied compression. The molar heat capacity, thermal-expansion coefficient, and Gruneisen parameter are estimated to be 25.2 J mol(-1) K-1, 7.2 x 10(-6) K-1, and 0.89, respectively. |

Abstract |
Using highly efficient GPU-based simulations of the tight-binding Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations we solve self-consistently for the pair correlation in rhombohedral (ABC) and Bernal (ABA) multilayer graphene by considering a finite intrinsic s-wave pairing potential. We find that the two different stacking configurations have opposite bulk/surface behavior for the order parameter. Surface superconductivity is robust for ABC stacked multilayer graphene even at very low pairing potentials for which the bulk order parameter vanishes, in agreement with a recent analytical approach. In contrast, for Bernal stacked multilayer graphene, we find that the order parameter is always suppressed at the surface and that there exists a critical value for the pairing potential below which no superconducting order is achieved. We considered different doping scenarios and find that homogeneous doping strongly suppresses surface superconductivity while nonhomogeneous field-induced doping has a much weaker effect on the superconducting order parameter. For multilayer structures with hybrid stacking (ABC and ABA) we find that when the thickness of each region is small (few layers), high-temperature surface superconductivity survives throughout the bulk due to the proximity effect between ABC/ABA interfaces where the order parameter is enhanced.
