Abstract Two-ordered perovskites, Bi1/3Sr2/3FeO2.67 and Bi1/2Ca1/2FeO2.75, have been stabilized and characterized by transmission electron microscopy, Mössbauer spectroscopy and X-ray powder diffraction techniques. They both exhibit orthorhombic superstructures, one with a≈b≈2ap and c≈3ap (S.G.: Pb2n or Pbmn) for the Sr-based compound and one with a≈b≈2ap and c≈8ap (S.G.: B222, Bmm2, B2mm or Bmmm) for the Ca-based one. The high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) images evidence the existence of one deficient [FeOx]∞ layer, suggesting that Bi1/3Sr2/3FeO2.67 and Bi1/2Ca1/2FeO2.75 behave differently compared to their Ln-based homolog. The HAADF-STEM images allow to propose a model of cation ordering on the A sites of the perovskite. The Mössbauer analyses confirm the trivalent state of iron and its complex environment with three types of coordination. Both compounds exhibit a high value of resistivity and the inverse molar susceptibility versus temperature curves evidence a magnetic transition at about 730 K for the Bi1/3Sr2/3FeO2.67 and a smooth reversible transition between 590 and 650 K for Bi1/2Ca1/2FeO2.75.

Abstract Strongly confined nano-systems, such as one-dimensional nanowires, feature deviations in their structural, electronic and optical properties from the corresponding bulk. In this work, we investigate the behavior of long-wavelength, optical phonons in vertical arrays of InAs nanowires by Raman spectroscopy. We attribute the main changes in the spectral features to thermal anharmonicity, due to temperature effects, and rule out the contribution of quantum confinement and Fano resonances. We also observe the appearance of surface optical modes, whose details allow for a quantitative, independent estimation of the nanowire diameter. The results shed light onto the mechanisms of lineshape change in low-dimensional InAs nanostructures, and are useful to help tailoring their electronic and vibrational properties for novel functionalities.

Abstract We investigate the formation of quantum confined structures on the surface of a liquid helium film suspended on a nanostructured substrate. We show theoretically that, by nanostructuring the substrate, it is possible to change the geometry of the liquid helium surface, opening the possibility of designing and controlling the formation of valleys with different shapes. By applying an external electric field perpendicular to the substrate plane, surface electrons can be trapped into these valleys, as in a quantum dot. We investigate how the external parameters, such as the electric field strength and the height of the liquid helium bath, can be tuned to control the energy spectrum of the trapped surface electrons.

Abstract Oriented attachment, the process in which nanometer-sized crystals fuse by atomic bonding of specific crystal facets, is expected to be more difficult to control than nanocrystal self-assembly that is driven by entropic factors or weak van der Waals attractions. Here, we present a study of oriented attachment of PbSe nanocrystals that counteract this tuition. The reaction was studied in a thin film of the suspension casted on an immiscible liquid at a given temperature. We report that attachment can be controlled such that it occurs with one type of facets exclusively. By control of the temperature and particle concentration we obtain one- or two-dimensional PbSe single crystals, the latter with a honeycomb or square superimposed periodicity in the nanometer range. We demonstrate the ability to convert these PbSe superstructures into other semiconductor compounds with the preservation of crystallinity and geometry.

Abstract Using time-differential perturbed angular correlation spectroscopy we have measured the electric field gradient (EFG) at 111Cd probe nuclei in solid Ce in a pressure range up to 8 GPa. Covering various allotropic phases of Ce, we find that the value of the EFG in the cubic α phase is almost four times larger than in the cubic γ phase and close to values in the noncubic phases α′ and α″. These results together with the differences in time modulation of the spectra are interpreted as evidence for quadrupolar electronic charge-density ordering and symmetry lowering at the γ→α transition while the lattice remains face-centered cubic

Abstract Highly effective IR light-emitting diodes operating at the wavelength 1.66 mu m and based on the buried heterostructure In0.88Ga0.12As0.26P0.74/ In0.72Ga0.28As0.62P0.38/In0.53Ga0.47As/InP have been grown by liquid-phase epitaxy (LPE) and characterized in detail by means of transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution electron microscopy (HREM),electron diffraction (ED), X-ray diffraction (XRD), secondary-ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) and electroluminescence measurements. The InGaAsP epilayers are found to be well lattice matched and of good structural quality. A tentative explanation is presented for the spinodal decomposition observed in InGaAsP alloys. A new type of selective CK, gas sensor has been developed and fabricated an the basis of the IR light-emitting diode mentioned above. Especially designed for the remote control of CH4 gas via fibre optics, an integrated optoelectronic readout scheme has been developed and tested, It is shown that the proposed type of sensor can be used for the quantitative remote control of CH4 gas concentration (0.2-100%) via a fibre glass line up to a distance of 2 x 1 km.   Abstract Bulk oxyfluoride glasses co-doped with Ag nanoclusters and Yb3+ ions have been prepared by a melt quenching technique. When excited in the absorption band of the Ag nanoclusters between 300 to 500 nm, these glasses emit a broad band characteristic of the Ag nanoclusters between 400 to 750 nm as well as an emission band between 900 to 1100 nm, originating from Yb3+ ions. The intensity ratio of the Yb3+/Ag emission bands increases with the Ag doping level at a fixed concentration of Yb3+, indicating the presence of energy transfer mechanism from the Ag nanoclusters to the Yb3+ ions. Comparison of time-resolved decay kinetics of the luminescence in the respectively Ag nanocluster-Yb3+ co-doped and single Ag nanocluster doped glasses, hints towards an energy transfer from the red and infrared emitting Ag nanoclusters to the Yb3+ ions.

Abstract Single-sided fluorination has been predicted to open an electronic band gap in graphene and to exhibit unique electronic and magnetic properties; however, this has not been substantiated by experimental reports. Our comprehensive experimental and theoretical study of this material on a SiC(0001) substrate shows that single-sided fluorographene exhibits two phases, a stable one with a band gap of similar to 6 eV and a metastable one, induced by UV irradiation, with a band gap of similar to 2.5 eV. The metastable structure, which reverts to the stable “ground-state” phase upon annealing under emission of blue light, in our view is induced by defect states, based on the observation of a nondispersive electronic state at the top of the valence band, not unlike that found in organic molecular layers. Our structural data show that the stable C2F ground state has a “boat” structure, in agreement with our X-ray magnetic circular dichroism data, which show the absence of an ordered magnetic phase. A high flux of UV or X-ray photons removes the fluorine atoms, demonstrating the possibility of lithographically patterning conducting regions into an otherwise semiconducting 2D material.

Abstract SrFe0.75Mo0.25O3-delta has been recently discovered as an extremely efficient electrode for intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells (IT-SOFCs). We have performed structural and magnetic studies to fully characterize this multifunctional material. We have observed by powder neutron diffraction (PND) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) that its crystal symmetry is better explained with a tetragonal symmetry (I4/mcm space group) than with the previously reported orthorhombic symmetry (Pnma space group). The temperature dependent magnetic properties indicate an exceptionally high magnetic ordering temperature (T-N similar to 750 K), well above room temperature. The ordered magnetic structure at low temperature was determined by PND to be an antiferromagnetic coupling of the Fe cations. Mossbauer spectroscopy corroborated the PND results. A detailed study, with X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), in agreement with the Mossbauer results, confirmed the formal oxidation states of the cations to be mixed valence Fe3+/4+ and Mo6+.

Abstract We study the electron wave packet moving through a bent channel. We demonstrate that the packet transmission probability becomes an asymmetric function of the magnetic field when the electron packet is capacitively coupled to a metal plate. The coupling occurs through a nonlinear potential which translates a different kinetics of the transport for opposite magnetic-field orientations into a different potential felt by the scattered electron.

Abstract The magnetic flux dependence of energy and supercurrent in mesoscopic d-wave symmetric and asymmetric superconducting loops is investigated by numerically solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations self-consistently. For square loops, we find an hc/e-flux periodicity in energy and supercurrent and demonstrate that the flux periodicity is sensitive to the hole size and the superconducting pairing strength as well as temperature. The hc/2e-periodic behavior can be restored almost entirely when we displace the central hole sufficiently out of the center of the sample. In rectangular loops, the discrete current-carrying low-energy spectrum can exist for an odd winding number of the order parameter.

Abstract he properties of Dirac electrons in a magnetic superlattice (SL) on graphene consisting of very high and thin (δ-function) barriers are investigated. We obtain the energy spectrum analytically and study the transmission through a finite number of barriers. The results are contrasted with those for electrons described by the Schrödinger equation. In addition, a collimation of an incident beam of electrons is obtained along the direction perpendicular to that of the SL. We also highlight an analogy with optical media in which the refractive index varies in space.
