Abstract Glass ceramic composites were prepared by bulk crystallization of NaNbO3 in sodium niobium borate glasses. A homogeneous bulk crystallization of the NaNbO3 phase takes place during heat treatments that produces visible-near infrared transparent materials with similar to 30 nm NaNbO3 nanocrystallites. Upon thermal poling, a strong Na+ depleted nonlinear optical thin layer is observed at the anode side that should induce a large internal static electric field. In addition, the chi((2)) response of the poled glass ceramic composites increases from 0.2 up to 1.9 pm/V with the rate of crystallization. Two mechanisms may be considered: a pure structural chi((2)) process connected with the occurrence of a spontaneous ferroelectric polarization or an increase of the chi((3)) response of the nanocrystallites that enhances the electric field induced second harmonic generation process.   Abstract Both an organically modified commercial clay of montmorillonite type (MMT) and its nanocomposites, based either on polyamide 6 (PA6) or an epoxy resin, as matrix polymer, have been characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Sample micrographs, taken at increasing exposure times (t(e)), have shown the gradual disappearance of clay layers, because of an amorphisation of the MMT crystalline structures caused by prolonged sample exposure to electron beam. Indeed, the above phenomenon, which is mostly evident in the case of intercalated nanocomposites, makes the detection of the layered silicate dispersion in the polymer matrix rather difficult and compels to perform TEM measurements using very short exposure times. Moreover, the microscopy accelerating voltage has turned out to affect sample stability; namely, when decreasing the above parameter, the disappearance of clay structure occurs at lower exposure times.   Abstract Using a combination of electron holography and energy filtering, interference fringes produced after inelastic interaction of electrons with hydrogen molecules are examined. Surprisingly, the coherence of inelastic scattering increases when moving from the surface of a hydrogen-containing bubble to the vacuum. This phenomenon can be understood in terms of the Feynman two-slit thought experiment with a variable ambiguity of the which-way registration. (C) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract Multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were decorated with metal clusters by thermal evaporation. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) shows that the nature and extent of metal coverage can be varied by plasma treating the MWCNT surface. The metal clusters on oxygen plasma treated arc-discharge MWCNTs have a more dense distribution than the clusters evaporated on as-synthesized are-discharge MWCNTs. In contrast, the plasma treatment did not affect the cluster distribution on CVD MWCNTs. Analyses of the valence band and the core levels by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy suggest poor charge transfer between gold clusters and MWCNTs; on the contrary suggest good charge transfer between Ni clusters and MWCNTs.   Abstract The mechanism allowing the transition from a two-dimensional strained layer of CdSe on ZnSe to self-assembled islands induced by the use of amorphous selenium is still not fully understood. For a better understanding, atomic force microscopy and transmission electron microscopy studies were performed on CdSe films with a thickness close to that for quantum dot formation. Below this thickness, the sample surface results in undulations along the [110] crystal direction, while few quantum dots are situated in the wave valleys. Plan view transmission electron microscopy studies reveal a strong anisotropy of the islands and show that the Se desorption conditions are crucial. (C) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract The occurrence and origin of diffuse intensity contours in electron micrographs of AgBr crystals are investigated. The observations are interpreted in terms of a model, which attributes diffuse scattering to the presence of predominant atom or vacancy clusters of a particular polyhedral type. It is shown that irrespective of the crystal morphology, interstitial Ag ions order in AgBr material in clusters of finite size along 001 type planes. A different geometry of the diffuse intensity locus observed for triangular and hexagonal tabular grains is explained in terms of the different twin plane morphology of these grains.

Abstract Broad area as well as buried heterostructure lasers based on In0.72Ga0.28As0.62P0.38/InP and emitting at 1.3 mum are grown by liquid phase epitaxy and are studied in detail by means of transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, secondary ion mass-spectrometry, and electroluminescence. The InGaAsP epilayer is found to be well lattice-matched and of good structural quality. A tentative explanation is presented for the spinodal decomposition observed in the InGaAsP alloy. We also report on the high performance characteristics of the infrared lasers.

Abstract The growth features of FeCr2S4 spinel single crystals prepared by chemical vapour transport were studied by means of scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, high resolution electron microscopy, electron diffraction and X-ray analysis. Our results indicate that the epitaxial growth of the new phases FeCr7S12 and FeCr8S12, both based on the NiAs structure, can essentially inhibit the growth of large FeCr2S4 spinel single crystals in the octahedral habit. The new phases are fully characterised and the effects of defect ordering in these new phases are also reported.
