Abstract: Recent advances in model based quantification of electron energy loss spectra (EELS) are reported. The maximum likelihood method for the estimation of physical parameters describing an EELS spectrum, the validation of the model used in this estimation procedure, and the computation of the attainable precision, that is, the theoretical lower bound on the variance of these estimates, are discussed. Experimental examples on An and GaAs samples show the power of the maximum likelihood method and show that the theoretical prediction of the attainable precision can be closely approached even for spectra with overlapping edges where conventional EELS quantification fails. To provide end-users with a low threshold alternative to conventional quantification, a user friendly program was developed which is freely available under a GNU public license. Abstract: We study ballistic electron transport through a finite chain of quantum circular rings in the presence of spin-orbit interaction of strength alpha. For a single ring, the transmission and reflection coefficients are obtained analytically and from them the conductance for a chain of rings as a function of alpha and of the wave vector k of the incident electron. We show that due to destructive spin interferences, the chain can be totally opaque for certain ranges of k, the width of which depends on the value of alpha. A periodic modulation of the strength alpha or of the ring radius widens the gaps considerably and produces a nearly binary conductance output. (C) 2004 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract: Metamorphic buffers (M-buffers) consisting of graded InAlAs or bulk InP were employed for the production of InP-based epiwafers on GaAs substrates by molecular-beam epitaxy. The graded InAlAs is the standard for production metamorphic high electron mobility transistors (M-HEMTs), while the bulk InP offers superior thermal properties for higher current density circuits. The surface morphology and crystal structure of the two M-buffers showed different relaxation mechanisms. The graded InAlAs gave a cross-hatched pattern with nearly full relaxation and very effective dislocation filtering, while the bulk InP had a uniform isotropic surface with dislocations propagating further up towards the active layers. Both types of M-buffers had atomic force microscopy root-mean-square roughness values around 2030 Å. The Hall transport properties of high electron mobility transistors (HEMTs) grown on the InAlAs M-buffer, and a baseline HEMT grown lattice matched on InP, both had room-temperature mobilities >10 000 cm2/V s, while the M-HEMT on the InP M-buffer showed a decrease to 9000 cm2/V s. Similarly, the dc parameters of a double heterojunction bipolar transistor (DHBT) grown on the InAlAs M-buffer were much closer to the baseline heterojunction bipolar transistor than a DHBT grown on the InP M-buffer. A high breakdown voltage of 11.3 V was achieved on an M-DHBT with the InAlAs M-buffer. We speculate that the degradation in device characteristics on the InP M-buffer was related to the incomplete dislocation filtering.

Abstract: We propose a scheme to generate the entangled state of two Lambda-type three-level atoms trapped in a cavity. The atoms are initially prepared in their excited state and the cavity in vacuum state. Each atom has two possibilities to deexcite to one of the ground states. If two different polarized photons are detected subsequently, it is sure that both atoms are in different ground states. But which atom is in which ground state cannot be determined, the atoms are thus prepared in a superposition of two ground states, i.e., an entangled state. In comparison with the proposal of Hong and Lee [Phys. Rev. Lett. 89, 237901 (2002)], the requirement of a single polarized photon source can be avoided in our scheme.

Abstract: Electron energy loss spectroscopy was used to investigate the bonding of plasma deposited carbon films. The experimental conditions include the use of a specific collection angle for which the shape of the spectra is free of the orientation dependency usually encountered in graphite due to its anisotropic structure. The first quantification process of the energy loss near-edge structure was performed by a standard fit of the collected spectrum, corrected for background and multiple scattering, with three Gaussian functions followed by a comparison with the graphite spectrum obtained under equivalent experimental conditions. In a second approach a fitting model directly incorporating the background subtraction and multiple scattering removal was applied. The final numerical results are interpreted in view of the deposition conditions of the films and the actual fitting procedure with the related choice of parameters.

“Structure and microstructure of epitaxial Sr4Fe6O13-\delta films on SrTiO3”. Rossell MD, Abakumov AM, Van Tendeloo G, Pardo JA, Santiso J, Chemistry and materials 16, 2578 (2004). http://doi.org/10.1021/cm0498234
Abstract: The crystal structure and the microstructure of epitaxial Sr4Fe6O13+/-delta thin films grown on a single-crystal SrTiO3 substrate by PLD have been investigated. A combination of electron diffraction and high-resolution microscopy allows us to refine the structure and to identify an incommensurate modulation in the Sr4Fe6O13+/-delta films. The incommensurate structure (q = alphaa(m)* approximate to 0.39alpha(m)*, superspace group Xmmm(alpha00)0s0) can be interpreted as an oxygen-deficient modification in the Fe2O2.5 double layers. Moreover, it is shown that the experimentally determined a component of the modulation can be used consistently to estimate the local oxygen content in the Sr4Fe6O13+/-delta films. The compound composition can therefore be described as Sr4Fe6O12+2alpha and the value alpha = 0.39 corresponds to a Sr4Fe6O12.78 composition. The misfit stress along the Sr4Fe6O13+/-delta/SrTiO3 interface is accommodated via both elastic deformation and inelastic mechanisms (misfit dislocations and 90degrees rotation twins). The present results also suggest the existence of SrFeO3 perovskite in the Sr4Fe6O13+/-delta films.

Abstract: The deviation effect of spinor mode from the single-mode for a spin-1 Bose gas of trapped atoms is studied beyond the mean field theory. Based on the effective Hamiltonian with nondegenerated level of the collective spin states, the splitting level of the system energy due to the deviation effect has been calculated. For the large condensates of (87)Rb and (23)Na with atom number N > 10(5), the splitting fraction of the energy, arising from the magnetization exhibited by the trapped Bose gas, is found to have a typical order of (10(-4) similar to 10(-8)), decreasing as N(-2) for (87)Rb and increasing as -N(-2) for 23 Na, respectively.
