Abstract A positron lifetime experiment is performed on samples produced by the compaction of nanocrystalline Ni3Al powder synthesized by the inert-gas condensation technique. In the lifetime spectrum we observe two components corresponding to defects. Computer (virtual) samples of n-Ni3Al are obtained using molecular dynamics combined with the Metropolis Monte Carlo technique. Positron lifetime calculations are then performed on selected regions of simulated samples. For this purpose, a new computational technique based on a generalization of the atomic superposition method for non-periodic systems was developed. Lifetimes calculated in this way are compared to experiment.

Year 1998 Publication Fullerenes and carbon based materials Abbreviated Journal
  Volume Issue Pages 487-493
Keywords P1 Proceeding; Electron microscopy for materials research (EMAT)
Abstract Several TEM techniques are used to characterise the local structure of low dimensional forms of carbon. HREM is particularly useful to describe the defect structure of thin films of diamond or fullerenes and C-60-C-70 nanoclusters. A columnar form of graphite is analysed, mainly by electron diffraction which allowed us to propose a growth mechanism. Diffraction contrast dark field microscopy, in combination with electron diffraction, allows a detailed characterisation of carbon nanotubes; e.g. the chirality distribution of tubes in ropes of single wall tubes is studied by selected area electron diffraction.   Abstract Nano-scale ordering may be revealed in transmission electron microscopy (TEM) by at least three techniques that will be presented in this work: selected area electron diffraction, conventional TEM and high-resolution TEM. Digital image processing is used to extract additional information from the high-resolution micrographs. The described methods are illustrated in a microstructural and compositional study of a 90%Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O-3-10%PbTiO2 ceramic sample. High-resolution images reveal the presence of ordered compositional nano-domains, observable in two specific crystallographic orientations. Antiphase boundaries lying in the (111) planes separate them, while (100) and (111) facets separate the ordered domains from the disordered matrix.

Abstract The recently discovered superconducting mercury-based cuprates HgBa2Can-1CunO2n+2+delta have proved difficult to synthesize as single phases and are sensitive to environment (CO2, moisture). The present paper gives an overview of new series mercury based superconductors, whose stabilisation is based on the fact that a foreign cation with a higher valency than Hg(II) must be introduced in the mercury layers, in order to fill up partially the oxygen vacancies of these layers. By this method, several new series of superconductors involving strontium instead of barium with critical temperatures ranging from 27 K to 95 K have been isolated : Hg0.5Bi0.5Sr2-xLaxCuO4+delta, Hg(0.5)Bi(0.5)Sr(2)Ca(1-x)R(x)Cu(2)O(6+delta) (R Y, Nd, Pr), Pb0.7Hg0.3Sr2-xLaxCuO4+delta, Pb(0.7)Hg(0.3)Sr(2)Ca(1-x)R(x)Cu(2)O(6+delta) (R = Y, Nd) Hg(1-x)Pr(x)Sr(2)A(1-x')Pr(x') Cu2O6+delta (A = Sr, Ca), Pb0.7Hg0.3Sr2Cu2CO3O7 and Hg1-xCrxSr2CuO4+delta. The behaviour of the praseodymium cuprates that exhibit a rather sharp transition and reach a Tc of 85 K is especially discussed. A method to synthesize new ''Ba-Hg'' superconducting cuprates with the 1212 structure at normal pressure with a Tc up to 110 K is also presented.

Abstract Samples of transparent glass-ceramics in the ternary system Li2O-Al2O3-SiO2 (LAS), with Er2O3 as a luminescent dopant, are investigated. The initial glass is obtained by the classical melting technique. In order to induce ceramization of the glass, TiO2 and ZrO2 are added in small amount as nucleating agents. The thermal treatments at 730 and 770 degrees C are carried out to promote formation of titanium zirconate solid solution precipitates. The spatial distribution of the precipitates in the material, their morphology, and their composition are investigated with TEM, HRTEM, HAADF-STEM, EELS and EFTEM. The results demonstrate that with the glass-melting preparation technique it is possible to achieve small nanoparticles with uniform distribution and higher number density than with the sol-gel glass preparation.

Abstract In typical seed-mediated syntheses of metal nanocrystals, the shape of the nanocrystal is determined largely by the seed nucleation environment and subsequent growth environment (where “environment” refers to the chemical environment, including the surfactant and additives). In this approach, crystallinity is typically determined by the seeds, and surfaces are controlled by the environment(s). However, surface energies, and crystallinity, are both influenced by the choice of environment(s). This limits the permutations of crystallinity and surface facets that can be mixed and matched to generate new nanocrystal morphologies. Here, we control post-seed growth to deliberately incorporate twin planes during the growth stage to deliver new final morphologies, including twinned cubes and bipyramids from single-crystal seeds. The nature and number of twin planes, together with surfactant control of facet growth, define the final nanoparticle morphology. Moreover, by breaking symmetry, the twin planes introduce new facet orientations. This additional mechanism opens new routes for the synthesis of different morphologies and facet orientations.

Abstract Tin-based perovskites are promising alternative absorber materials for leadfree perovskite solar cells but need strategies to avoid fast tin (Sn) oxidation. Generally, this reaction can be slowed down by the addition of tin fluoride (SnF2) to the perovskite precursor solution, which also improves the perovskite layer morphology. Here, this work analyzes the spatial distribution of the additive within formamidinium tin triiodide (FASnI(3)) films deposited on top of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) hole transporting layers. Employing time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry and a combination of hard and soft X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, it is found that Sn F2 preferably accumulates at the PEDOT:PSS/perovskite interface, accompanied by the formation of an ultrathin SnS interlayer with an effective thickness of approximate to 1.2 nm.

Abstract For oxygen conducting materials applied in solid oxide fuel cells and chemical-looping processes, the understanding of the oxygen diffusion mechanism and the materials’ crystal structure at different stages of the redox reactions is a key parameter to control their performance. In this paper we report the first ever in situ 3D ED experiment in a gas environment and with it uncover the structure evolution of SrFeO2.5 as notably different from that reported from in situ X-ray and in situ neutron powder diffraction studies in gas environments. Using in situ 3D ED on submicron sized single crystals obtained from a high quality monodomain SrFeO2.5 single crystal , we observe the transformation under O2 flow of SrFeO2.5 with an intra- and interlayer ordering of the left and right twisted (FeO4) tetrahedral chains (space group Pcmb) into consecutively SrFeO2.75 with space group Cmmm (at 350°C, 33% O2) and SrFeO3-δ with space group Pm3 ̅m (at 400°C, 100% O2). Upon reduction in H2 flow, the crystals return to the brownmillerite structure with intralayer order, but without regaining the interlayer order of the pristine crystals. Therefore, redox cycling of SrFeO2.5 crystals in O2 and H2 introduces stacking faults into the structure, resulting in an I2/m(0βγ)0s symmetry with variable β.

Abstract Multiwall carbon nanotubes grown by the catalytic decomposition of acetylene over supported Co catalyst were subjected to wet and dry oxidation in order to remove the unwanted products and the catalyst traces. The effects of the purification treatment on the Co content was monitored by physical methods: Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry (RBS). Particle Induced X-Ray Emission (PIXE) and X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF). The purified products were investigated by microscopic methods: TEM. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) and STM. The KMnO4/H2SO4 aqueous oxidation procedure was found to be effective in reducing the Co content while damaging only moderately the outer wall of the nanotubes. Treatment in HNO3/H2SO4 yields a bucky-paper like product and produces the increase of the Si and S content of the sample. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract We studied the morphology of ramps in REBa2CU3O7 (REBCO) epitaxial films on SrTiO3 substrates, fabricated by RF magnetron sputter deposition and pulsed laser deposition (PLD), by scanning probe microscopy (SPM) and high resolution electron microscopy (HREM). The ramps were fabricated by Ar ion beam etching using masks of standard photoresist and TIN. AFM-studies on ramps in sputter deposited films show a strong dependence, i.e. formation of facets and ridges, on the angle of incidence of the ion beam with respect to the substrate surface as well as the rotation angle with respect to the crystal axes of the substrate. Ramps in pulsed laser deposited films did not show this dependence, Furthermore, we studied the effect of an anneal step prior to the deposition of barrier layers (i.e. PrBa2CU3O7, SrTiO3, CeO2) on the ramp. First results show a recrystallization of the ramp surface, resulting in terraces and a non-homogeneous growth of the barrier material on top of it. The thickness variations, for thin layers of barrier material, con even become much larger than expected from the amount of deposited material and are dependent on the deposition and anneal conditions. HREM studies show a well defined interface between barrier layer and electrodes. The angle of the ramp depends on the etch rate of the mask and REBCO, and on the angle of incidence of the ion beam. TiN has a much lower etch rate compared to photoresist, resulting in an angle of the ramp comparable to the angle of incidence, resulting in a low etching rate on the ramp. These results will lead to improved electrical characteristics of ramp-type junctions.
