Abstract: Under ultrasonication, the production of high quality graphene layers by exfoliation of graphite was achieved via addition of tiopronin as an antioxidant.

Abstract: Previous investigations about the darkening of chrome yellow pigments revealed that this form of alteration is attributable to a reduction of the original Cr(VI) to Cr(III), and that the presence of sulfur-containing compounds, most often sulfates, plays a key role during this process. We recently demonstrated that different crystal forms of chrome yellow pigments (PbCrO4 and PbCr1xSxO4) are present in paintings by Vincent van Gogh. In the present work, we show how both the chemical composition and the crystalline structure of lead chromate-based pigments influence their stability. For this purpose, oil model samples made with in-house synthesized powders of PbCrO4 and PbCr1xSxO4 were artificially aged and characterized. We observed a profound darkening only for those paint models made with PbCr1xSxO4, rich in SO42 (x ≥ 0.4), and orthorhombic phases (>30 wt %). Cr and S K-edge micro X-ray absorption near edge structure investigations revealed in an unequivocal manner the formation of up to about 60% of Cr(III)-species in the outer layer of the most altered samples; conversely, independent of the paint models chemical composition, no change in the S-oxidation state was observed. Analyses employing UVvisible diffuse reflectance and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were performed on unaged and aged model samples in order to obtain additional information on the physicochemical changes induced by the aging treatment.

Abstract: The control of the formation process during and after self-assembly is of utmost importance to achieve well structured, controlled template-assisted mesoporous titania materials with the desired properties for various applications via the evaporation induced self-assembly method (EISA). The present paper reports on the large influence of the thermal stabilization and successive template removal on the pore structure of a mesostructured TiO2 material using the diblock copolymer Brij 58 as surfactant. A controlled thermal stabilization (temperature and duration) allows one to tailor the final pore size and uniformity much more precise by influencing the self-assembly of the template. Moreover, also the successive thermal template removal needs to be controlled in order to avoid a structural collapse. N2-sorption, TGA, TEM, FT-Raman spectroscopy, and small angle wide angle XRD have been used to follow the crystal growth and mesostructure organization after thermal stabilization and after thermal template removal, revealing its effect on the final pore structure.

Abstract: The development of new electrode materials, which are composed of Earth-abundant elements and that can be made via eco-efficient processes, is becoming absolutely necessary for reasons of sustainable production. The 3.9 V triplite-phase of LiFeSO4F, compared to the 3.6 V tavorite-phase, could satisfy this requirement provided the currently complex synthetic pathway can be simplified. Here, we present our work aiming at better understanding the reaction mechanism that govern its formation as a way to optimize its preparation. We first demonstrate, using complementary X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy studies, that triplite-LiFeSO4F can nucleate from tavorite-LiFeSO4F via a reconstructive process whose kinetics are significantly influenced by moisture and particle morphology. Perhaps the most spectacular finding is that it is possible to prepare electrochemically active triplite-LiFeSO4F from anhydrous precursors using either reactive spark plasma sintering (SPS) synthesis in a mere 20 min at 320 degrees C or room temperature ball milling for 3 h. These new pathways appear to be strongly driven by the easy formation of a disordered phase with higher entropy, as both techniques trigger disorder via rapid annealing steps or defect creation. Although a huge number of phases adopts the tavorite structure-type, this new finding offers both a potential way to prepare new compositions in the triplite structure and a wealth of opportunities for the synthesis of new materials which could benefit many domains beyond energy storage.

Abstract: Within the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau theory we discuss the effect of nonmagnetic interactions between the normal current and supercurrent in the presence of electric and magnetic fields. The correction due to the current-current interactions is shown to have a transient character so that it contributes only when a system evolves. Numerical studies for thin current-carrying superconducting strips with no magnetic feedback show that the effect of the normal current corrections is more pronounced in the resistive state where fast-moving kinematic vortices are formed. Simulations also reveal that the largest contribution due to current-current interactions appears near the sample edges, where the vortices reach their maximal velocity.

Abstract: It is widely accepted that the physical properties of nanostructures depend on the type of surface facets1, 2. For Au nanorods, the surface facets have a major influence on crucial effects such as reactivity and ligand adsorption and there has been controversy regarding facet indexing3, 4. Aberration-corrected electron microscopy is the ideal technique to study the atomic structure of nanomaterials5, 6. However, these images correspond to two-dimensional (2D) projections of 3D nano-objects, leading to an incomplete characterization. Recently, much progress was achieved in the field of atomic-resolution electron tomography, but it is still far from being a routinely used technique. Here we propose a methodology to measure the 3D atomic structure of free-standing nanoparticles, which we apply to characterize the surface facets of Au nanorods. This methodology is applicable to a broad range of nanocrystals, leading to unique insights concerning the connection between the structure and properties of nanostructures.

Abstract: In this paper, the splitting of CO2 in a pulsed plasma system, such as a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD), is evaluated from a chemical point of view by means of numerical modeling. For this purpose, a chemical reaction set of CO2 in an atmospheric pressure plasma is developed, including the vibrational states of CO2, O2, and CO. The simulated pulses are matched to the conditions of a filament (or microdischarge) and repeated with intervals of 1 μs. The influence of vibrationally excited CO2 as well as other neutral species, ions, and electrons on the CO2 splitting is discussed. Our calculations predict that the electrons have the largest contribution to the CO2 splitting at the conditions under study, by electron impact dissociation. The contribution of vibrationally excited CO2 levels in the splitting of CO2 is found be 6.4%, when only considering one microdischarge pulse and its afterglow, but it can be much higher for consecutive discharge pulses, as is typical for a filamentary DBD, when the interpulse time is short enough and accumulation effects in the vibrationally excited CO2 densities can occur.

Abstract: The electronic and optical properties of InAs/GaSb core-shell nanowires are investigated within the effective mass k . p approach. These systems have a broken band gap, which results in spatially separated confinement of electrons and holes. We investigated these structures for different sizes of the InAs and GaSb core and shell radius. We found that for certain configurations, the conduction band states penetrate into the valence band states resulting in a negative band gap (E-g < 0), which leads to a conduction band ground state that lies below the valence band ground state at the Gamma point. For certain core-shell wires, only one conduction band state penetrates into the valence band and in this case, a minigap Delta opens up away from the Gamma point and as a consequence the electronic properties of the nanowire now depend on both E-g and Delta values.

Abstract: The subsurface area introduced during rolling on the 1100 aluminum alloy series alters its surface properties, which makes it more susceptible to corrosion. A combination of different transmission electron microscopy techniques is employed to observe the orientation of small grain structures and the distribution elements in the subsurface layer. This approach provided valuable insight into the formation mechanism of the layer and the phenomena taking place during rolling.

Abstract: We used SEM/EDX and micro-Raman spectroscopy to investigate the chemical changes (both on the level of elementary and molecular composition) of mice bones when strontium is incorporated in their microstructure after being administered in the form of two salts: chloride and ranelate. Strontium accumulated mainly in vicinity of bone edges, both cortical and close to bone marrow. The distribution of other elements comprising bone samples (Ca, P, Mg, K etc.) was also determined by energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX). The area adjacent to a cortical bone edge with accumulated strontium has presented modified Raman spectral profiles. Besides most of the Raman bands typical for both mineral (hydroxyapatite with carbonate substitution type B) and organic phases of a bone, we observed a Raman band at 811 cm− 1. It was detected regularly in the sample with high strontium concentration.

Abstract: An electrochemical matairesinol biosensor was fabricated by immobilizing tyrosinase on a poly(thionine)/nafion/multi-walled carbon nanotube composite film. A polymeric film of the redox dye thionine enables the stable immobilization of tyrosinase while acting as a mediator for the enzymatic process has been incorporated into the carbon nanotube/nafion composite film. The immobilization method is based on crosslinking of the tyrosinase layer with an electropolymerized film of poly(thionine). The good homogenization of the electron conductor CNTs in the integrated films provides the possibility of a three-dimensional electron conductive network. The biosensor was characterized by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and electrochemical characterization. The composite electrode exhibits catalytic activity, high sensitivity, stability and is applicable over a wide range of concentrations from 180 nM to 4.33 μM with a detection limit (LOD) of 37 nM. The obtained results suggest that the developed sensor can be successfully used for the determination of phenolic endocrine disruptors over a concentration range covering their environmental levels.

Abstract: Grains of K-feldspar are commonly seen as heterogeneous mixtures of mineral species and varieties with random microstructures. Most consider that observable features arise from incomplete re-equilibrations owing to slow kinetic and localized effects of aqueous fluids (catalyst), with geological environment and chemical impurities playing only a secondary role. Here, an alternative approach is explored by studying well-preserved regularities in the twin patterns of K-feldspars formed in the subsolidus stage from a historical perspective. Selected samples from granitic pegmatites were studied by polarized light optical microscopy (PLOM), electron-probe micro-analysis (EPMA), scanning (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), cathodoluminescence imaging (CL), micro-Raman spectroscopy (MRS) and 31P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). We have found that the essential feature of this crystalline medium is the astounding capability to recrystallize in self-organized twin patterns. The mechanism involves coupling between short-range atomic motion, and long-range displacive correlations propagated as ideal and non-ideal Albite and Pericline orientations. We suggest a general evolutionary process to explain the development of macroscopic twin patterns in microcline, based on three twin generations as microtwins, macrotwins and cryptotwins. Evolutionary variants also were identified; they depend on both internal crystallochemical features and an external geological stimulus. We suggest a continuous monoclinictriclinic transformation for impure K-feldspar, whereas a discontinuous inversion occurs where the starting composition is close to the ideal chemical formula. Twin patterns can evolve by twin coarsening to single-orientation microcline if the system releases energy, or by twin fragmentation to finely twinned microcline if the system stores energy. Hence, K-feldspar is seen here as a very sensitive medium in which precious geological information is recorded in the form of twin patterns, and thus useful for general geological challenges.

Abstract: The measurement of the ratio of stable isotopes of carbon (13C/12C expressed as a δ13C) in the individual components of a sample may be used as a means to identify the origin of these components. This article reviews the approaches and reports on the successes and failures of source identification and apportionment of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) with the use of compound-specific isotope analysis (CSIA). One of the conditions for a precise and accurate analysis of isotope ratios with the use of GC-C-IRMS is the need for well separated peaks, with no co-elutions, and reduced unresolved complex mixture (UCM). Additionally, special care needs to be taken for an investigation of possible isotope fractionation effects introduced during the analytical treatment of samples. With the above-mentioned problems in mind, this review discusses in detail and compares current laboratory methodologies, mainly in the extraction and subsequent clean-up techniques used for environmental samples (air particulate matter, soil and sediments). Sampling strategies, the use of isotopic internal standards and the ranges for precision and accuracy are also reported and discussed.

Abstract: A two-dimensional self-consistent fluid model combined with the full set of Maxwell equations is employed to investigate an Ar/CF4 capacitively coupled plasma, focusing on the phase-shift effect on the plasma characteristics at various frequencies and gas mixture ratios. When the discharge is sustained by a single frequency at 13.56 MHz in an Ar/CF4 mixture with a ratio of 0.9/0.1, no obvious difference is detected between the electron densities obtained in the so-called electrostatic model (with only the static electric fields taken into account) and the electromagnetic model (which includes the electromagnetic effects). However, as the frequency increases to 60 and 100 MHz, the difference becomes distinct, due to the significant influence of the electromagnetic effects. The phase-shift effect on the plasma radial uniformity has also been investigated in a dual frequency discharge, i.e. when the top driven source is switched on with a phase difference phiv ranging from 0 to π, in the frequency range 13.56100 MHz. At low concentration of CF4 (10%), Ar+ ions are the major positive ions in the entire range of frequencies. When the frequency is low, i.e. 13.56 MHz, the Ar+ density exhibits an off-axis peak at phiv = 0 due to the edge effect, and a better uniformity caused by the phase-shift modulation is obtained at phiv = π. At 60 MHz, the Ar+ density varies from edge-peaked at phiv = 0 to uniform (i.e. at phiv = 0.53π), and finally at phiv = π, a broad maximum is observed at the centre due to the standing-wave effect. As the frequency increases to 100 MHz, the best radial uniformity is reached at 0.25π, and the maximum moves again towards the radial wall in the reverse-phase case (phiv = π) due to the dominant skin effect. Abstract: The interaction of an injected electron towards a quantum dot (QD) containing a single confined electron is investigated using a flexible time-dependent quantum mechanics formalism, which allows both electrons to move and undergo quantum transitions. Different scenarios combining quantum dot dimensions, dielectric constant, injected wave packet energy, and width were explored, and our main results are: (i) due to the large characteristic transitions times between the confined state in the quantum dot and the delocalized state in the continuum, it is relatively difficult to ionize the occupied QD by Coulomb interaction solely and (ii) the charging state of the quantum dot can be sensed by direct injection of charges.
