Abstract |
Transmission electron microscopy has been applied to study Ti and Al/Ti contacts on GaN and AlGaN/GaN as a function of annealing temperature. This has lead to a profound understanding of the role of Al, both in the contact formation on n-GaN and on AlGaN/GaN. Al in the AlGaN decreases the N-extraction by Ti out of the nitride, because of the strong Al-N bond. Al in the metal bilayer also reduces the N-extraction by Ti due to a preferential alloy mixing. |

Abstract |
The CO and CO2 Dielectric Barrier Discharges (DBD) and their solid products were analyzed keeping similar energy input regimes. Gas chromatography analysis revealed the presence of CO2, CO and O-2 mixture in the exhaust of the CO2 DBD, while no O-2 was found when CO was used as a feed gas. It was shown that the C-2 Swan lines observed with optical emission spectroscopy were distinct in the CO plasma while they were not observed in the CO2 emission spectrum. Also the solid products of the plasmas exhibited remarkable differences. Nanoparticles with a diameter between10 and 300 nm, composed of Fe, O and C (Fe: O: C similar to 13: 50: 30) were produced by the CO2 DBD, while microscopic dendrite-like carbon structure (C: O similar to 73: 27) were formed in the CO plasma. The growth rate in the CO2 and CO DBDs was evaluated to be on the level of 0.15 mg/min and 15 mg/min, respectively. The difference of the CO and CO2 discharges and their products might be attributed to the oxygen content in the latter (6.4 mol.% O-2 in the exhaust) and subsequent etching of the carbonaceous film. |

Abstract |
Plasma technology has advanced significantly in recent years, with application ranging from chemical conversion, to surface treatment, material development and several other fields. Special attention has been paid to the development of possible novel approaches for the conversion of chemicals in a more sustainable way. Plasma technology offers advantages over thermochemical routes such as high process versatility, mild reaction condition, one-step synthesis, fast reaction and instant control. More importantly, it can be easily combined with electricity generated from various renewable sources and is suitable for energy storage via the conversion of intermittent renewable energy into carbon-neutral fuels or other chemicals. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in the development of plasma technology for CO2 utilization. Investigation on different reactions such as CO2 splitting, dry reforming of methane (DRM) and CO2 hydrogenation with different types of plasma reactors and catalysts have been reported by researchers worldwide. Although technological maturity still needs to be increased, the potential of plasma has been well-recognized by the scientific community and industry. More research output in the future is expected as a result of intensive research activities and various kinds of investment. In this context, we present this special issue on CO2 utilization with plasma technology, which collects 22 articles, covering topics in related areas such as plasma reactor design, plasma catalysis, plasmamaterial interaction, modeling and new ideas for possible applications. |

Abstract |
We present an extension and revision of the spectroscopic and structural data of the mixed-stack charge-transfer (CT) crystal 3,3 ',5,5 '-tetramethylbenzidine-tetrafluorotetracyano-quinodimethane (TMB-TCNQF4), associated with new electric and dielectric measurements. Refinement of synchrotron structural data at low temperature has led to revise the previously reported C2/m structure. The revised structure is P2(1)/m, with two dimerized stacks per unit cell, and is consistent with the low temperature vibrational data. However, polarized Raman data in the low-frequency region also indicate that by increasing temperature above 200 K, the structure presents an increasing degree of disorder, mainly along the stack axis. X-ray diffraction data at room temperature have confirmed that the correct structure is P2(1)/ m -no phase transitions -but did not allow substantiating the presence of disorder. On the other hand, dielectric measurements have evidenced a typical relaxor ferroelectric behavior already at room temperature, with a peak in the real part of dielectric constant epsilon'(T,v) around 200 K and 0.1 Hz. The relaxor behavior is explained in terms of the presence of spin solitons separating domains of opposite polarity that yield to ferroelectric nanodomains. TMB-TCNQF(4) is confirmed to be a narrow-gap band semiconductor (Ea similar to 0.3 eV) with a room-temperature conductivity of similar to 10(-4) Omega(-1) cm(-1). |

Abstract |
For oxygen conducting materials applied in solid oxide fuel cells and chemical-looping processes, the understanding of the oxygen diffusion mechanism and the materials’ crystal structure at different stages of the redox reactions is a key parameter to control their performance. In this paper we report the first ever in situ 3D ED experiment in a gas environment and with it uncover the structure evolution of SrFeO2.5 as notably different from that reported from in situ X-ray and in situ neutron powder diffraction studies in gas environments. Using in situ 3D ED on submicron sized single crystals obtained from a high quality monodomain SrFeO2.5 single crystal , we observe the transformation under O2 flow of SrFeO2.5 with an intra- and interlayer ordering of the left and right twisted (FeO4) tetrahedral chains (space group Pcmb) into consecutively SrFeO2.75 with space group Cmmm (at 350°C, 33% O2) and SrFeO3-δ with space group Pm3 ̅m (at 400°C, 100% O2). Upon reduction in H2 flow, the crystals return to the brownmillerite structure with intralayer order, but without regaining the interlayer order of the pristine crystals. Therefore, redox cycling of SrFeO2.5 crystals in O2 and H2 introduces stacking faults into the structure, resulting in an I2/m(0βγ)0s symmetry with variable β. |

Abstract |
The one vortex entry in a superconducting disk is investigated within the non-linear Ginzburg-Landau theory near the first critical field. We find that in mesoscopic superconducting disks the magnetic flux enters with fractions of one flux quantum phi(0) = ch/2e. For disks with a very smooth surface it is possible to drive the Meissner state so far into the metastable region that at the vortex entry a net amount of flux is expelled from the superconductor. We show that the magnetic field for flux entry is very sensitive to indentations of the disk surface and only weakly to bulges. On the other hand the flux exit field is practically insensitive to such geometrical surface defects. Our results are in agreement with recent experimental findings. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. Abstract |
Catalytic methods for the production of carbon nanotubules have been developed based on the decomposition of acetylene on well-dispersed metal particles strongly adsorbed on a support. Cobalt on silica was found to be the best catalyst-support combination for the production of graphitic tubules. The method for the catalyst preparation and the reaction conditions were optimized. Straight and coiled carbon tubules were obtained with inner and outer diameter of 3-7 and 15-20 nm, respectively, and up to 30 mum in length. These nanotubules were not coated by amorphous carbon. Traces of amorphous carbon could be removed by hydrogen. High resolution electron microscopy images and electron diffraction patterns of the straight nanotubules were similar to those obtained by the arc-discharge method. Coiled nanotubules were revealed by TEM to be regular polygonized helices where the bends are caused by pairs of pentagon-heptagon carbon rings among the hexagonal network. |

This phase is the same as Bi9Sr11Ca5Oy that was previously studied by several authors as a secondary phase in the Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O system and coexists in thermodynamic equilibrium with the superconductors Bi2Sr2CuO6 and Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 It crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/c, with cell parameters a 11.037(3) Angstrom, b = 5.971(2) Angstrom, c = 19.703(7) Angstrom, beta = 101.46(3)degrees Z = 2. The structure was solved by direct methods and full-matrix least-squares refinement. It is built up by perovskite-related blocks of composition [Sr8-xBi2Ca3+xO16] that intergrow with double rows [Bi4O6] running along b. The perovskite blocks are formed by groups of five octahedra that are shifted from each other 3/2 root 2a(p) along [110](p) (a(p) being the parameter of the cubic perovskite subcell) in a zigzag configuration and are aligned with this direction parallel to the one forming an angle of 25" with the c axis. In turn, the perovskite blocks [Sr8-xBi2Ca3+xO16] are shifted from each other 1/2 of both a(p) and root 2a(p) along [100](p) and [110](p), respectively. In the double rows, two trivalent bismuth atoms are placed, forming dimeric anion complexes [Bi2O6].(6-).6- The oxygen atoms around bismuth in these dimers are placed in the vertexes of a distorted trigonal bipyramid, with one vacant position that would be occupied by the lone pairs characteristic for the electronic configuration of Bi(III). The B sites in the perovskite blocks are occupied by pentavalent bismuth atoms and calcium atoms; the remaining Sr and Ca ions occupy the A sites of the perovskite blocks with coordination numbers with oxygen ranging from 10 to 12. The mean valence for Bi is +3.67 [33.3% of Bi(V) and 66.7% of Bi(III)]. The oxygen vacancies are located in the boundaries between domains having the two possible configurations of the perovskite subcell as in the anionic superconductor Bi3BaO5.5. The oxidation of Bi6Sr8-xCa3+xO22 at 650 degrees C allows the complete filling of the oxygen vacancies to form the double perovskite (Sr2-xCax)Bi1.4Ca0.6O6 that shows 92.5% of bismuth in +5 oxidation state. The experimental high-resolution electon microscopy image and the electron diffraction pattern of powder samples along the [010]* zone axis are in good agreement with those calculated from the structural model obtained by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The material is almost free of defects and the occurrence of planar defects is very exceptional. |

Abstract |
A transmission electron microscopy study of epitaxial C-60 and C-70 films grown on a GeS (001) surface is presented. The relationship between the orientation of the substrate and the films and structural defects in the films, such as grain boundaries, unknown in bulk C-60 and C-70 crystals, are studied. Small misalignments of the overlayers with respect to the orientation of the substrate, so-called epitaxial rotations, exist mainly in C-70 films, but also sporadically in the C-60 overlayers. A simple symmetry model, previously used to predict the rotation of hexagonal overlayers on hexagonal substrates, is numerically tested and applied to the present situation. Some qualitative conclusions concerning the substrate-film interaction are deduced. (C) 1996 American Institute of Physics. |

Abstract |
High-resolution electron microscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy have been used to compare the microstructure of NdBa2Cu3O7-delta and Nd1+xBa2-xCu3O7-delta thin films. Both films contain comparable amounts of Nd2CuO4 inclusions. Antiphase boundaries are induced by unit cell high steps at the substrate or by a different interface stacking. In Nd1+xBa2-xCu3O7-delta the antiphase boundaries tend to annihilate by the insertion of extra Nd layers. Stacking faults, which can be characterized as local Nd2Ba2Cu4O9 inclusions, also absorb the excess Nd. A correlation is made between the excess Nd and the absence of growth spirals at the surface of the Nd-rich films. (C) 2001 American Institute of Physics. |

Abstract |
Accuracy and precision of silicon determination in biological matrices (serum, urine, water, beer and spinach) by spectrometric techniques (when necessary after acid destruction) were assessed by means of a collaborative interlaboratory trial. The trial was set up in accordance with ISO 5725-2 (1994). The relative overall repeatability standard deviation was acceptable. It varied between 4% for spinach powder (mean content: 176 mg kg(-1)) and 11% for serum (mean content: 5.33 mg L-1). On the other hand, the relative overall between-laboratory standard deviation was found to vary from a satisfactorily 15% for spinach after destruction (mean content: 3.32 mg L-1) to an unacceptable 107% for spinach powder (mean content: 176 mg kg(-1)). The overall conclusion of the trial was that silicon determination in biological matrices can properly be performed by spectrometric techniques. However, when sample pretreatment (i.e., acid destruction) is needed prior to silicon determination problems still remain. |

Abstract |
The influence of the geometry of a thin superconducting sample on the penetration of the magnetic field lines and the arrangement of vortices are investigated theoretically. We compare the vortex state of superconducting disks, squares, and triangles with the same surface area having nonzero thickness. The coupled nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau equations are solved self-consistently and the important demagnetization effects are taken into account. We calculate and compare quantities such as the free energy, the magnetization, the Cooper-pair density, the magnetic field distribution, and the superconducting current density for the three geometries. For given vorticity the vortex lattice is different for the three geometries, i.e., it tries to adapt to the geometry of the sample. This also influences the stability range of the different vortex states. For certain magnetic field ranges we found a coexistence of a giant vortex placed in the center and single vortices towards the corners of the sample. The H-T phase diagram is obtained for the three investigated geometries and we found that the critical magnetic field is substantially enhanced for the triangle geometry. |

Abstract |
Magnetoreflectivity measurements of the 1s and 2s exciton energies in a CdTe/Cd1-xMnxTe superlattice have been made in magnetic fields up to 45 T, showing the resonant polaron coupling of electrons to LO phonons. Strong reflectivity features are seen for both the 1s and 2s excitons, which show a strong field-dependent spin splitting due to the dilute magnetic barriers. At B-z=0, the 2s exciton feature is observed lying 18 meV above the Is state, and is shifted upward in energy by the magnetic fields. No resonant behavior occurs when the 2s state passes through the LO-phonon energy of 21 meV, but at higher fields of around 20 T, the resonances for both spin states (sigma(+/-)) of the 2s exciton broaden and show a strong anticrossing behavior. These experiments are shown to be in excellent agreement with a theoretical treatment which includes the resonant polaron coupling of the electrons alone. Both experiment and theory demonstrate an extremely strong resonant splitting of the 2s exciton states of approximately 11 meV, which is over 50% of the LO-phonon energy. The dominance of single-particle polaron coupling is attributed to the relative sizes of the polaron (35 Angstrom A) and the exciton (50 Angstrom A) radius. |

Abstract |
The superconducting state of an infinitely long superconducting cylinder surrounded by a medium which enhances its superconductivity near the boundary is studied within the nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau theory. This enhancement can be due to the proximity of another superconductor or due to surface treatment. Quantities such as the free energy, the magnetization and the Cooper-pair density are calculated. Phase diagrams are obtained to investigate how the critical field and the critical temperature depend on this surface enhancement for different values of the Ginzburg-Landau parameter kappa. Increasing the superconductivity near the surface leads to higher critical fields and critical temperatures. For small cylinder diameters only giant vortex states nucleate, while for larger cylinders multivortices can nucleate. The stability of these multivortex states also depends on the surface enhancement. For type-I superconductors we found the remarkable result that for a range of values of the surface extrapolation length the superconductor can transit from the Meissner state into superconducting states with vorticity L > 1. Such a behavior is not found for the case of large kappa, i.e., type-II superconductivity, |

Abstract |
The superconducting state. of a thin superconducting disk with a hole is studied within the, nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau theory in which the demagnetization effect is accurately taken into account. We find that the flux through the hole is not quantized, the superconducting state is stabilized with increasing size of the hole for fixed radius of the disk, and a transition to a multivortex state is found if the disk is sufficiently large. Breaking the circular symmetry through a non-central-location of the hole in the disk favors the multivortex state. |

Abstract |
High-resolution electron microscopy is used to study the initial growth of different REBa2CU3O7-5 thin films. In DyBa2CU3O7-5 ultra-thin films, deposited on TiO2 terminated SrTiO3, two different types of interface arrangements occur: bulk-SrO-TiO2-BaO-CuO-BaO-CuO2-Dy-CuO2-BaO-bulk and bulk-SrO-TiO2-BaO-CuO2-Dy-CuO2-BaO-CuO-BaO-bulk. This variable growth sequence is the origin of the presence of antiphase boundaries. In Nd1+xBa2-xCu3O7-5 thin films, antiphase boundaries tend to annihilate by the insertion of extra Nd-layers. This annihilation is correlated with the flat morphology of the film and the absence of growth spirals at the surface of the Nd-rich films. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved. |

Abstract |
Thin films of the superconducting Nd1+xBa2−xCu3O7−δ (NBCO) and Y1(NdxBa2−x)Cu3O7−δ (YNBCO) compounds have been deposited by dc magnetron sputtering and diode high pressure oxygen sputtering. Different techniques, including scanning tunneling microscopy, atomic force microscopy, X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) have been used to study the film microstructures and the surface morphology. It is shown that the Nd/Ba exchange promotes a 2D heteroepitaxial growth in the case of the NBCO films deposited on (1 0 0) SrTiO3 substrates, with a suppression of the characteristic 3D spirals structures. On the contrary in YNBCO the Nd/Ba exchange does not provide a driving force for the suppression of screw-dislocations, since spirals or towers originated by screw and half loop dislocations are observed on the surface. TEM reveals that anti-phase boundaries are eliminated during the growth of NBCO films thanks to the Nd/Ba exchange while this mechanism is not operating in the case of YNBCO films. |
