  Abstract The microstructure of BaTiO3 thin films, epitaxially deposited on (001) MgO by pulsed laser ablation, has been investigated by transmission electron microscopy. The films are always c-axis-orientated, but dislocations, {111} stacking faults, and antiphase boundaries are frequently observed. Conventional TEM and high-resolution microscopy allow one to deduce the Burgers vectors of dislocations as b(1) = <100> or b(2) = <110>, both being perfect dislocations. Most extrinsic stacking faults are ending at 1/3<112> or 1/3<111> partial dislocations; the displacement vector of the antiphase boundaries is 1/2<101>. Studying the interfacial structure by means of zone images taken along [100] and [110] shows that the misfit is mainly released by dislocations with Burgers vectors of 1/2<110> and 1/2<101>.

  Abstract Nanocrystalline titanium dioxide was prepared via aerosol pyrolysis of titanium alkoxide precursor at 200-580 degrees C in air and in nitrogen atmospheres. Powders were characterized by x-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, x-ray fluorescence, Raman and infrared spectroscopy, and Berner-type low-pressure impactor. The anatase phase transition was initiated at 500 degrees C in nitrogen and at 580 degrees C in air. Under other conditions amorphous powders were observed and transformed to nanocrystalline TiO2 via thermal postannealing. In air, smooth and spherical particles with 2-4-mu m diameter were formed with an as-expected tendency to convert to rutile in the thermal postannealings. In nitrogen, a fraction of the titanium tetrabutoxide precursor evaporated and formed ultrafine particles via the gas-to-particle conversion. At 500 degrees C thermally stable anatase phase was formed in nitrogen. A specific surface area as high as 280 m(2) g(-1) was observed for an as-prepared powder.

  Abstract Carbonaceous spherules of millimeter size diameter and found in the upper soils throughout Europe are investigated by TEM, including SAED, HRTEM and EELS, and Raman spectroscopy. The spherules consist primarily of carbon and have an open cell-like internal structure. Most of the carbon appears in an amorphous state, but different morphologies of nano- and microdiamond particles have also been discovered including flake shapes. The latter observation, together with the original findings of some of these spherules in crater-like structures in the landscape and including severely deformed rocks with some spherules being embedded in the fused crust of excavated rocks, points towards unique conditions of origin for these spherules and particles, possibly of exogenic origin.   Abstract Titanate nanotubes were prepared via a hydrothermal treatment of TiO2 powders (Riedel De Haen) in a basic solution. Morphology and structure of the prepared samples were characterized by high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), selected area electron diffraction (SAED), XRD, FT-Raman spectroscopy, nitrogen sorption and DSC. The photocatalytic activity was evaluated by photocatalytic oxidation of rhodamine 6G. Trititanate nanotubes (TTNT) with inner pore diameters between 4 and 4.2 nm and surface areas up till 360 m(2)/g could be synthesized. The synthesis route was modified by introduction of a calcination step, by applying a lower hydrothermal temperature and microwave irradiation in order to increase the photocatalytic activity of the porous photoactive nanotubular materials. Calcination and a softer hydrothermal treatment led to the formation of anatase without affecting the surface area and nanotubular shape of the samples. In this way, the photocatalytic activity of the original trititanate nanotubes could be significantly increased. By making use of microwave assisted synthesis, the photocatalytic activity call also be increased due to the presence of anatase. However, by applying microwave synthesis, a different structure was obtained, nanoribbons (NR) instead of nanotubcs, resulting in a decrease in surface area and porosity.

  Abstract We present a generalized Galitskii approach for the Bethe-Salpeter equation for the two-particle vertex function of a Fermi system with the resonant interaction by accounting for the resonant state in the scattering potential and utilizing the universal form of the resonant scattering amplitude. The procedure can be carried out both for the normal as well as for the condensate state. In both cases, the vertex function in the vicinity of the resonance is shown to formally coincide with that obtained for a weakly attractive Fermi gas. Thus we justify the popular calculational framework in which results for the weakly attractive Fermi gas are formally extrapolated into the domain of strong coupling, and further to the repulsive side of the resonance, where molecular states are formed.

  Abstract We calculate the fluorescence of electron spins confined to a plane and driven into resonance by a magnetic field gradient and a constant magnetic field applied at right angles to each other. We solve the equation of motion of two-dimensional electrons in the magnetic field gradient to derive the dispersion curve of spin oscillators, the amplitude of electron oscillations, the effective magnetic field sensed by the electron spin, and the rate at which electrons are injected from an electrode into spin oscillators. We then switch on the interaction between the spin magnetic dipole and the electromagnetic field to find the fluorescence power radiated by the individual spin oscillators. The rate of radiative decay is first derived, followed by the probability of sequential photon emission whereby a series of spontaneous decays occurs at random times separated by intervals during which the spin performs Rabi oscillations. The quantum correlations between random radiative decays manifest as bursts of emission at regular intervals along the wire. We integrate all multiphoton processes to obtain an exact analytical expression for the radiated electromagnetic power. The present theory obtains all parameters of the problem including magnetodipole coupling, the particle dwell time in the magnetic field gradient, and the spin polarization of the incoming current. The output power contains a fine structure arising from the anharmonicity of electron oscillations and from nonlinear optical effects which both give satellite emission peaks at odd multiples of the fundamental frequency.
