Year 2009 Publication Carbon Abbreviated Journal Carbon
  Volume 47 Issue 2 Pages 513-518
Keywords A1 Journal article; Electron microscopy for materials research (EMAT)
Abstract Expanded graphite decorated with nickel oxide particles (EGNiO) has been synthesized through electrochemical oxidation of natural graphite in an aqueous nickel nitrate solution followed by a heat treatment. EGNiO was used to prepare nickel/carbon composites using two techniques: (a) hydrogen reduction of nickel oxide particles loaded on the expanded graphite surface and (b) pyrolysis of coal tar pitch-impregnated EGNiO blocks. The EGNiO as well as the nickel/carbon composites have been characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and selected area electron diffraction.

Title Experimental validation of edge strength model for glass with polished and cut edge finishing Type A1 Journal article
Year 2012 Publication Engineering fracture mechanics Abbreviated Journal Eng Fract Mech
  Volume 96 Issue Pages 480-489
Keywords A1 Journal article; Engineering sciences. Technology; Electron microscopy for materials research (EMAT)
Abstract In literature, the experimental validation of a glass edge strength model is lacking. Therefore, in this study, an edge strength model was established and validated. The short-term parameters of the edge strength model, i.e. the flaw geometry and depth, were determined by means of testing at a high stress rate. This was done for polished and cut edges. Next, the strength model, including subcritical crack growth, was established. Finally, the edge strength model was validated by the test results at a low stress rate. The assessed model was found to be slightly conservative, compared to the test results.

Title Focused ion beam/scanning electron microscopy tomography and conventional transmission electron microscopy assessment of Ni4Ti3 morphology in compression-aged Ni-rich Ni-Ti single crystals Type A1 Journal article
Year 2010 Publication Scripta materialia Abbreviated Journal Scripta Mater
  Volume 62 Issue 6 Pages 399-402
Keywords A1 Journal article; Electron microscopy for materials research (EMAT); Condensed Matter Theory (CMT)
Abstract The size, morphology and configuration of Ni4Ti3 precipitates in a single-crystal NiTi alloy have been investigated by two-dimensional transmission electron microscopy-based image analysis and three-dimensional reconstruction from slice-and-view images obtained in a focused ion beam/scanning electron microscopy (FIB/SEM) dual-beam system. Average distances between the precipitates measured along the compression direction correlate well between both techniques, while particle shape and configuration data is best obtained from FIB/SEM. Precipitates form pockets of B2 of 0.54 ìm in the compression direction and 1 ìm perpendicular to the compression direction.

Title Formation of endohedral Ni@C60 and exohedral NiC60 metallofullerene complexes by simulated ion implantation Type A1 Journal article
Year 2009 Publication Carbon Abbreviated Journal Carbon
  Volume 47 Issue 4 Pages 1028-1033
Keywords A1 Journal article; Plasma Lab for Applications in Sustainability and Medicine – Antwerp (PLASMANT)
Abstract The interaction of thermal and hyperthermal Ni ions with gas-phase C60 fullerene was investigated at two temperatures with classical molecular dynamics simulations using a recently developed interatomic many-body potential. The interaction between Ni and C60 is characterized in terms of the NiC60 binding sites, complex formation, and the collision and temperature induced deformation of the C60 cage structure. The simulations show how ion implantation theoretically allows the synthesis of both endohedral Ni@C60 and exohedral NiC60 metallofullerene complexes.

Title Functionalization of MWCNTs with atomic nitrogen Type A1 Journal article
Year 2009 Publication Micron Abbreviated Journal Micron
  Volume 40 Issue 1 Pages 85-88
Keywords A1 Journal article; Electron microscopy for materials research (EMAT)
Abstract In this study of the changes induced by exposing MWCNTs to a nitrogen plasma, it was found by HRTEM that the atomic nitrogen exposure does not significantly etch the surface of the carbon nanotube (CNT). Nevertheless, the atomic nitrogen generated by a microwave plasma effectively grafts amine, nitrile, amide, and oxime groups onto the CNT surface, as observed by XPS, altering the density of valence electronic states, as seen in UPS.   Abstract Expandable graphite of two types was synthesized by (1) hydrolysis of graphite nitrate of II stage and (2) anodic polarization of graphite in 60% HNO3. Exfoliated graphite samples were produced by thermal shock of expandable graphite samples in air at 900 °C. A comparative study of microstructural distinctions of both expandable and exfoliated graphite samples was carried out using X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, electron energy loss spectroscopy and high resolution transmission electron microscopy.

Title High strength-ductility of thin nanocrystalline palladium films with nanoscale twins : on-chip testing and grain aggregate model Type A1 Journal article
Year 2012 Publication Acta materialia Abbreviated Journal Acta Mater
  Volume 60 Issue 4 Pages 1795-1806
Keywords A1 Journal article; Engineering sciences. Technology; Electron microscopy for materials research (EMAT)
Abstract The mechanical behaviour of thin nanocrystalline palladium films with an ∼30 nm in plane grain size has been characterized on chip under uniaxial tension. The films exhibit a large strain hardening capacity and a significant increase in the strength with decreasing thickness. Transmission electron microscopy has revealed the presence of a moderate density of growth nanotwins interacting with dislocations. A semi-analytical grain aggregate model is proposed to investigate the impact of different contributions to the flow behaviour, involving the effect of twins, of grain size and of the presence of a thin surface layer. This model provides guidelines to optimizing the strength/ductility ratio of the films.

Abstract A computer model is developed for describing argon/nitrogen glow discharges. The species taken into account in the model include electrons, Ar atoms in the ground state and in the 4s metastable levels, N2 molecules in the ground state and in six different electronically excited levels, N atoms, Ar+ ions, N+, N2+, N3+ and N4+ ions. The fast electrons are simulated with a Monte Carlo model, whereas all other species are treated in a fluid model. 74 different chemical reactions are considered in the model. The calculation results include the densities of all the different plasma species, as well as information on their production and loss processes. The effect of different N2 additions, in the range between 0.1 and 10%, is investigated.

Abstract We present a model that describes the effect of elastic constraint on the thermodynamics of hydrogen absorption and desorption in biphasic core-shell nanoparticles, where the core is a hydride forming metal. In particular, the change of the hydride formation enthalpy and of the equilibrium pressure for the metal/hydride transformation are described as a function of nanoparticles radius, shell thickness, and elastic properties of both core and shell. To test the model, the hydrogen sorption isotherms of Mg-MgO core-shell nanoparticles, synthesized by inert gas condensation, were measured by means of optical hydrogenography. The model's predictions are in good agreement with the experimentally determined plateau pressure of hydrogen absorption. The features that a core-shell systems should exhibit in view of practical hydrogen storage applications are discussed with reference to the model and the experimental results.   Abstract This paper discusses the possibility of retrieving the electron distribution (with highlighted valence electron distribution information) of materials from recorded HREM images. This process can be achieved by solving two inverse problems: reconstruction of the exit wave and reconstruction of the electron distribution from exit waves. The first inverse problem can be solved using a focal series reconstruction method. We show that the second inverse problem can be solved by combining a series of exit waves recorded at different thickness conditions. This process is designed based on an improved understanding of the dynamical scattering process. It also explains the fundamental difficulty of obtaining the valence electron distribution information and the basis of our solution.

Abstract Microstructural changes taking place during the heat treatment of cold-worked NiTi alloy are of key interest in shape memory alloy technology, since they are responsible for setting the austenite shape and functional properties of the heat-treated alloy. In this work, microstructural evolution during non-conventional electropulse heat treatment of thin NiTi filaments was investigated in a unique high-speed in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction experiment with simultaneous evaluation of the tensile force and electrical resistivity of the treated wire. The in situ results provide direct experimental evidence on the evolution of the internal stress and density of defects during fast heating from 20 °C to ∼700 °C. This evidence is used to characterize a sequence of dynamic recovery and recrystallization processes responsible for the microstructure and superelastic functional property changes during the electropulse treatments.

Title The influence of laser-particle interaction in laser induced breakdown spectroscopy and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma spectrometry Type A1 Journal article

Abstract Particles produced by previous laser shots may have significant influence on the analytical signal in laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma (LA-ICP) spectrometry if they remain close to the position of laser sampling. The effects of these particles on the laser-induced breakdown event are demonstrated in several ways. LIBS-experiments were conducted in an ablation cell at atmospheric conditions in argon or air applying a dual-pulse arrangement with orthogonal pre-pulse, i.e., plasma breakdown in a gas generated by a focussed laser beam parallel and close to the sample surface followed by a delayed crossing laser pulse in orthogonal direction which actually ablates material from the sample and produces the LIBS plasma. The optical emission of the LIBS plasma as well as the absorption of the pre-pulse laser was measured. In the presence of particles in the focus of the pre-pulse laser, the plasma breakdown is affected and more energy of the pre-pulse laser is absorbed than without particles. As a result, the analyte line emission from the LIBS plasma of the second laser is enhanced. It is assumed that the enhancement is not only due to an increase of mass ablated by the second laser but also to better atomization and excitation conditions favored by a reduced gas density in the pre-pulse plasma. Higher laser pulse frequencies increase the probability of particle-laser interaction and, therefore, reduce the shot-to-shot line intensity variation as compared to lower particle loadings in the cell. Additional experiments using an aerosol chamber were performed to further quantify the laser absorption by the plasma in dependence on time both with and without the presence of particles. The overall implication of laser-particle interactions for LIBS and LA-ICP-MS/OES are discussed.

Title Influence of N2 concentration in a CH4/N2 dielectric barrier discharge used for CH4 conversion into H2 Type A1 Journal article

Abstract We present a combined study of experimental and computational work for a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) used for CH4 conversion into H2. More specifically, we investigated the influence of N2 as an impurity (150,000 ppm) and as additive gas (199%) on the CH4 conversion and H2 yield. For this purpose, a zero-dimensional chemical kinetics model is applied to study the plasma chemistry. The calculated conversions and yields for various gas mixing ratios are compared to the obtained experimental values, and good agreement is achieved. The study reveals the significance of the View the MathML source and View the MathML source metastable states for the CH4 conversion into H2, based on a kinetic analysis of the reaction chemistry.

Abstract Ion irradiation of carbon nanotubes very often leads to defect formation. However, we have recently shown that Ar ion irradiation in a limited energy window of 1025 eV may enhance the initial cap nucleation process, when the carbon network is in contact with the metal nanocatalyst. Here, we employ reactive molecular dynamics simulations to demonstrate that ion irradiation in a higher energy window of 1035 eV may also heal network defects after the nucleation stage through a non-metal-mediated mechanism, when the carbon network is no longer in contact with the metal nanocatalyst. The results demonstrate the possibility of beneficially utilizing ions in e.g. plasma-enhanced chemical vapour deposition of carbon nanotubes.

Abstract By changing the testing temperature, an austenitic FeMnAlSi alloy presents either å-martensite transformation or mechanical twinning during straining. In order to understand the nucleation and growth mechanisms involved in both phenomena, defects and particularly stacking faults, were characterized by transmission electron microscopy. It is observed that the character of the stacking faults also changes (from extrinsic to intrinsic) together with the temperature and the activated mode of plasticity.
