Title The effect of temperature on the structural, electronic and optical properties of sp3-rich amorphous carbon Type A1 Journal article
Year 2008 Publication Journal of physics : condensed matter Abbreviated Journal J Phys-Condens Mat
  Volume 20 Issue 3 Pages 035216,1-6
Keywords A1 Journal article; Electron microscopy for materials research (EMAT)
Abstract The effect of temperature on the structural, electronic and optical properties of dense tetrahedral amorphous carbon made of similar to 80% sp(3)-bonded atoms is investigated using a combination of the classical Monte Carlo technique and density functional theory. A structural transformation accompanied by a slight decrease of the sp(3) fraction is evidenced above a temperature of about 600 degrees C. A structural analysis in combination with energy-loss near-edge structure calculations shows that beyond this temperature, the sp(2)-bonded C sites arrange themselves so as to enhance the conjugation of the p electrons. The Tauc optical band gap deduced from the calculated dielectric function shows major changes beyond this temperature in accordance with experimental results. Energy-loss near-edge structure and band gap calculations additionally reveal a massive destabilization of the of sp(3) bonding phase in favour of sp(2) bonding at a temperature of about 1300 degrees C which agrees very well with the reported value of 1100 degrees C.

Title The effect of the magnetic field strength on the sheath region of a dc magnetron discharge Type A1 Journal article
Year 2008 Publication Journal of physics: D: applied physics Abbreviated Journal J Phys D Appl Phys
  Volume 41 Issue Pages 202007,1-5
Keywords A1 Journal article; Plasma Lab for Applications in Sustainability and Medicine – Antwerp (PLASMANT)
Abstract A 2d3v particle-in-cell/Monte Carlo collisions model was applied to study the influence of the magnetic field strength on the cathode sheath region of a direct current (dc) magnetron discharge. When applying a magnetic field of 520-730 G, the cathode sheath width decreases with magnetic field strength, whereas, if a stronger magnetic field is applied (i. e. from 730 to 2600 G), the sheath width increases. This is explained by studying the structure of the sheath in different magnetic field strengths in terms of the electron and ion densities. The consequences of sheath structure on the sputter deposition process are also investigated. It is found that the magnetic field strength can control the erosion profile and the sputter rate.

Title The effect of the sampling cone position and diameter on the gas flow dynamics in an ICP Type A1 Journal article
Year 2013 Publication Journal of analytical atomic spectrometry Abbreviated Journal J Anal Atom Spectrom
  Volume 28 Issue 9 Pages 1485-1492
Keywords A1 Journal article; Plasma Lab for Applications in Sustainability and Medicine – Antwerp (PLASMANT)
Abstract An inductively coupled plasma, connected to a sampling cone of a mass spectrometer, is computationally investigated. The effects of the sampler orifice diameter (ranging from 1 to 2 mm) and distance of the sampler cone from the load coil (ranging from 7 to 17 mm) are studied. An increase in sampler orifice diameter leads to a higher central plasma temperature at the place of the sampler, as well as more efficient gas transfer through the sampler, by reducing the interaction of the plasma gas with the sampling cone. However, the flow velocity at the sampler position is found to be independent of the sampler orifice diameter. Moreover, by changing the sampler orifice diameter, we can control whether only the central gas or also the auxiliary gas can exit through the sampler. Finally, with the increasing distance of the sampler from the load coil, the plasma temperature at the place of the sampler decreases slightly, which might also have consequences for the ion generation and transport through the sampling cone.

  Volume 48 Issue 5 Pages 491-501

Abstract The electronic structure of the conduction and valence bands of a quantum ring containing a layer inside the ring opening is modeled This structure (nanocup) consists of a GaAs nanodisk (the cup s bottom) and a GaAs nanoring (the cup s rim) which encircles the disk The whole system is embedded in an (Al Ga)As matrix and its shape resembles realistic ring structures grown by the droplet epitaxy technique The conduction-band states in the structure are modeled by the single-band effective-mass theory while the 4-band Luttinger-Kohn model is adopted to compute the valence-band states We analyze how the electronic structure of the nanocup evolves from the one of a quantum ring when the size of either the nanodisk or the nanoring is changed For that purpose (1) the width of the ring (2) the disk radius and (3) the disk height are separately varied For dimensions typical for experimentally realized structures we find that the electron wavefunctions are mainly localized inside the ring even when the thickness of the Inner layer is 90% of the ring thickness These calculations indicate that topological phenomena like the excitonic Aharonov-Bohm effect are negligibly affected by the presence of the layer inside the ring (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd All rights reserved

Abstract Homogenized Ni39.6Mn47.5T12.9 material was investigated by different electron microscopy techniques. Apart from the martensite precursor distortions typical for B2 phase alloys undergoing a thermoelastic martensitic transformation upon cooling, coherent dodecahedron-shaped precipitates with sizes between 20 and 100 nm and faceted by lozenge shapes of {110}-type planes are observed. Selected-area and microdiffraction patterns reveal an overall unit cell with a size of 3 x 3 x 3 units of the bcc lattice of the matrix and a body-centred symmetry without screw axes. Finally a ternary gamma-brass-type atomic structure of space group 14(3) over bar m is suggested for these precipitates in accordance with the obtained symmetry constraints, the energy-dispersive X-ray measurements and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy images. This is the first time this type of structure is found in an alloy completely consisting of transition-metal elements.

Abstract The electronic and optical properties of zincblende nanowires are investigated in the presence of a uniform magnetic field directed along the [001] growth direction within the k . p method. We focus our numerical study on core-shell nanowires consisting of the III-V materials GaAs, AlxGa1-xAs and AlyGa1-y/0.51In0.49P. Nanowires with electrons confined in the core exhibit a Fock-Darwin-like spectrum, whereas nanowires with electrons confined in the shell show Aharonov-Bohm oscillations. Thus, by properly choosing the core and the shell materials of the nanowire, the optical properties in a magnetic field can be tuned in very different ways.

Year 2012 Publication Journal of physics : condensed matter Abbreviated Journal J Phys-Condens Mat
  Volume 24 Issue 37 Pages 375301

Abstract A tight-binding model is used to study the energy band of graphene and graphene ribbon under simple shear strain. The ribbon consists of lines of carbon atoms in an armchair or zigzag orientation where a simple shear strain is applied in the x-direction keeping the atomic distances in the y-direction unchanged. Such modification in the lattice gives an energy band that differs in several aspects from the one without any shear and with pure shear. The changes in the spectrum depend on the line displacement of the ribbon, and also on the modified hopping parameter. It is also shown that this simple shear strain tunes the electronic properties of both graphene and graphene ribbon, opening and closing energy gaps for different displacements of the system. The modified density of states is also shown.

Abstract We present electronic band structures of transparent oxides calculated using the Tran-Blaha modified Becke-Johnson (TB-mBJ) potential. We studied the basic n-type conducting binary oxides In2O3, ZnO, CdO and SnO2 along with the p-type conducting ternary oxides delafossite CuXO2 (X = Al, Ga, In) and spinel ZnX2O4 (X = Co, Rh, Ir). The results are presented for calculated band gaps and effective electron masses. We discuss the improvements in the band gap determination using TB-mBJ compared to the standard generalized gradient approximation (GGA) in density functional theory (DFT) and also compare the electronic band structure with available results from the quasiparticle GW method. It is shown that the calculated band gaps compare well with the experimental and GW results, although the electron effective mass is generally overestimated.

Abstract We propose two coupled electron-hole sheets of few-layer graphene as a new nanostructure to observe superfluidity at enhanced densities and enhanced transition temperatures. For ABC stacked few-layer graphene we show that the strongly correlated electron-hole pairing regime is readily accessible experimentally using current technologies. We find for double trilayer and quadlayer graphene sheets spatially separated by a nano-thick hexagonal boron-nitride insulating barrier, that the transition temperature for electron-hole superfluidity can approach temperatures of 40 K.

Abstract Quantum mechanical coupling and strain in two vertically arranged InP/InGaP quantum dots is studied as a function of the size of the dots and the spacer thickness. The strain distribution is determined by the continuum mechanical model, while the single-band effective-mass equation and the multiband k (.) p theory are employed to compute the conduction and valence band energy levels, respectively. The exciton states are obtained from an exact diagonalization approach, and we also compute the oscillator strength for recombination. We found that the light holes are confined by strain to the spacer, which is the reason that the hole states exhibit coupling at much larger distances as compared with the electrons. At small d, the doublet structure of the hole energy levels arises as a consequence of the relocation of the light hole from the matrix to the regions located-outside the stack, close to the dot-matrix interface. When d varies, the exciton ground state exhibits numerous anticrossings with other states, which are related to the changing spatial localization of the hole as a function of d. The oscillator strength of the exciton recombination is strongly reduced in a certain range of spacer thicknesses, which effectively turns a bright exciton state into a dark one. This effect is associated with anticrossings between exciton energy levels.

Abstract The large (bi)polaron is investigated for the case where the electron interacts with multiple LO-phonon branches. Explicit expressions for the groundstate energy and the effective mass are obtained within the Feynman polaron model approximation and they are applied to the material SrTiO3. The results of an effective LO-phonon branch approximation are compared with the results in which all LO-phonon branches are explicitly included. We show how the stability region for large bipolaron formation is enlarged when the electrons interact with multiple LO-phonon branches. The possible relevance of this result for the high-T(c) superconductors is pointed out.

Abstract Two-dimensional electron gases (2DEGs) formed at the interface of insulating complex oxides promise the development of all-oxide electronic devices. These 2DEGs involve many-body interactions that give rise to a variety of physical phenomena such as superconductivity, magnetism, tunable metalinsulator transitions and phase separation. Increasing the mobility of the 2DEG, however, remains a major challenge. Here, we show that the electron mobility is enhanced by more than two orders of magnitude by inserting a single-unit-cell insulating layer of polar La1−xSrxMnO3 (x = 0, 1/8, and 1/3) at the interface between disordered LaAlO3 and crystalline SrTiO3 produced at room temperature. Resonant X-ray spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy show that the manganite layer undergoes unambiguous electronic reconstruction, leading to modulation doping of such atomically engineered complex oxide heterointerfaces. At low temperatures, the modulation-doped 2DEG exhibits Shubnikovde Haas oscillations and fingerprints of the quantum Hall effect, demonstrating unprecedented high mobility and low electron density.
