“Melting transitions in isotropically confined three-dimensional small Coulomb clusters”. Apolinario SWS, Peeters FM, Physical review : E : statistical physics, plasmas, fluids, and related interdisciplinary topics 76, 031107 (2007). http://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevE.76.031107
Abstract: Molecular dynamic simulations are performed to investigate the melting process of small three-dimensional clusters (i.e., systems with one and two shells) of classical charged particles trapped in an isotropic parabolic potential. The confined particles interact through a repulsive potential. We find that the ground-state configurations for systems with N=6, 12, 13, and 38 particles interacting through a Coulomb potential are magic clusters. Such magic clusters have an octahedral or icosahedral symmetry and are found to have a large stability against intrashell diffusion leading to an intershell melting transition prior to the intrashell and radial melting process. For systems with two shells a local radial melting of subshells is found at low temperatures resulting in a structural transition leading to an increased symmetry of the ordered system. Using Lindemanns criterion the different melting temperatures are determined and the influence of the screening of the interparticle interaction was investigated. A normal mode analysis is performed and some of the normal modes are found to be determinantal for the melting process.

Abstract: We report a microstructural and compositional study of a 90% Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O-3 – 10% PbTiO3 ceramic sample. High resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) revealed the presence of compositional ordered nano-domains (1 – 4 mn), observable in two specific orientations, [0 (1) over bar 1] and [1 1 (2) over bar]. However, the visibility and the ordering degree of the nano-domains on the HRTEM images are not at all obvious. Fourier filtering of the images clearly revealed the ordered domains. Antiphase boundaries lying in the (111) planes separate them, while (100) and (111) facets separate the ordered domains from the disordered matrix. Their shape is plate-like, not uniformly spread in the disordered matrix. Their average size varies in different regions of the sample, most probably due to a non-uniform distribution of Ti, as observed by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Abstract: The orientation of a C(70) fullerene molecule encapsulated in a single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) depends on the tube radius. First we confirm that chirality effects do not affect the orientation as well by comparing discrete atomistic calculations with the results of a continuous tube approximation for a variety of SWCNTs. The molecular and the tube symmetry are exploited by using symmetry-adapted rotator functions. We accurately determine the optimal molecular orientation as a function of the tube radius; for low (less than or similar to 7 A) and high (greater than or similar to 7.2 A) tube radii, lying and standing molecular orientations are recovered, respectively. In between, we observe a transition regime. In addition, we consider off-axis positions. We perform a one-dimensional liquid description of a chain of on-axis C(70) molecules inside a SWCNT. All results agree well with recent x-ray diffraction experiments.

Abstract: We compare the magnetic properties of pure and oxidized Co nanoparticles embedded in an amorphous Al2O3 matrix. Nanoparticles with diameters of 2 or 3 nm were prepared by alternate pulsed laser deposition in high vacuum conditions, and some of them were exposed to O-2 after production and before being embedded. The nanoparticles are organized in layers, the effective edge-to-edge in-depth separation being 5 or 10 nm. The lower saturation magnetizations per Co atom for the samples containing oxidized nanoparticles provide evidence for the formation of antiferromagnetic CoO shells in the nanoparticles. None of the samples with Co/CoO nanoparticles show exchange bias, while vertical hysteresis loop shifts and enhanced coercivities (as compared to samples with pure Co nanoparticles) are observed. This constitutes evidence for the nanoparticles size being in all cases smaller than the critical size for exchange bias. The difference in coercivity versus temperature dependences for the samples with pure and oxidized Co nanoparticles shows that the exchange anisotropy in Co/CoO nanoparticles appears at temperatures lower than 50 K. Abstract: We introduce a generalized non-equilibrium statistical operator (NSO) to study a current-carrying system. The NSO is used to derive a set of quantum kinetic equations based on quantum mechanical balance equations. The quantum kinetic equations are solved self-consistently together with Poissons equation to solve a general transport problem. We show that these kinetic equations can be used to rederive the Landauer formula for the conductance of a quantum point contact, without any reference to reservoirs at different chemical potentials. Instead, energy dissipation is taken into account explicitly through the electron-phonon interaction. We find that both elastic and inelastic scattering are necessary to obtain the Landauer conductance.
