Title Hidden symmetries of electronic transport in a disordered one-dimensional lattice Type A1 Journal article

  Volume 73 Issue 19 Pages 195109

Abstract Correlated, or extended, impurities play an important role in the transport properties of dirty metals. Here, we examine, in the framework of a tight-binding lattice, the transmission of a single electron through an array of correlated impurities. In particular we show that particles transmit through an impurity array in identical fashion, regardless of the direction of traversal. The demonstration of this fact is straightforward in the continuum limit, but requires a detailed proof for the discrete lattice. We also briefly demonstrate and discuss the time evolution of these scattering states, to delineate regions (in time and space) where the aforementioned symmetry is violated.

Year 2006 Publication Environmental science & technology Abbreviated Journal Environ Sci Technol

Abstract Platinum metal was dispersed on microporous, mesoporous, and nonporous support materials including the zeolites Na-Y, Ba-Y, Ferrierite, ZSM-22, ETS-10, and AlPO-11, alumina, and titania. The oxidation of carbon black loosely mixed with catalyst powder was monitored gravimetrically in a gas stream containing nitric oxide, oxygen, and water. The carbon oxidation activity of the catalysts was found to be uniquely related to the Pt dispersion and little influenced by support type. The optimum dispersion is around 3-4% corresponding to relatively large Pt particle sizes of 2040 nm. The carbon oxidation activity reflects the NO oxidation activity of the platinum catalyst, which reaches an optimum in the 20-40 nm Pt particle size range. The lowest carbon oxidation temperatures were achieved with platinum loaded ZSM-22 and AlPO-11 zeolite crystallites bearing platinum of optimum dispersion on their external surfaces.

Title Superconducting single-phase Sr1-xLaxCuO2 thin films with improved crystallinity grown by pulsed laser deposition Type A1 Journal article
Year 2006 Publication Applied physics letters Abbreviated Journal Appl Phys Lett
  Volume 89 Issue 9 Pages
Keywords A1 Journal article; Electron microscopy for materials research (EMAT)
Abstract Sr1-xLaxCuO2-delta (x=0.10-0.20) thin films exhibiting an oxygen-deficient 2 root 2a(p)x2 root a(p) x c structure (a(p) and c represent the cell parameters of the perovskite subcell) were epitaxially grown by means of pulsed laser deposition in low-pressure oxygen ambient. (001) KTaO3 and (001) SrTiO3 single crystals were used as substrates, with BaTiO3 as buffer layer. The Sr1-xLaxCuO2-delta films were oxidized during cooling down in order to yield the infinite-layer-type structure. By applying this method, high quality single-phase Sr1-xLaxCuO2 thin films could be obtained for 0.10 <= x <= 0.175 doping range. The films grown on BaTiO3/KTaO3 show superconductivity for 0.15 <= x <= 0.175 with optimum doping at x=0.15, in contrast with previously reported data. (c) 2006 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract A straightforward application of the theoretical framework presented by Verbeeck et al. [Ultramicroscopy 102 (2005) 239] is presented to explain the energy-filtered electron-diffracted beam holography experiments published by Herring [Ultramicroscopy 104 (2005) 261]. It is shown that the theory is in agreement with all experimental findings, which leads to the interpretation that the experiments are mainly measuring the angular coherence of the source image rather than exposing details on the coherence properties of inelastic scattering. A change in experimental parameters is proposed, which could result in interesting information about the coherence in all inelastic scattering process. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract Annular dark-field transmission electron microscopy uses an annular objective aperture that blocks the central beam and all electrons scattered up to a certain serniangle. A contrast suitable for electron tomography is generated and 3D reconstructions of CdTe tetrapods and C nanotubes (see figure) are successfully obtained. With short exposure times and high contrast, the technique could be useful not only for materials science, but also for biological applications.

Abstract We propose an improved image simulation procedure for atomic-resolution annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) based on the multislice formulation, which takes thermal diffuse scattering fully into account. The improvement with regard to the classical frozen phonon approach is realized by separating the lattice configuration statistics from the dynamical scattering so as to avoid repetitive calculations. As an example, the influence of phonon scattering on the image contrast is calculated and investigated. STEM image simulation of crystals can be applied with reasonable computing times to problems involving a large number of atoms and thick or large supercells.

Abstract We compare the magnetic properties of Co cluster assembled films with different degrees of oxidation. Clusters with grain size (2.3 +/- 0.7) nm are produced in a laser vaporization cluster source and soft-landed in ultrahigh vacuum conditions, forming highly porous nanogranular films. After exposure to air for different periods of time, the Co clusters oxidize and the sample may be considered as a thin antiferromagnetic Co oxide matrix containing ferromagnetic Co clusters. Magnetization measurements were performed in a temperature range from 300 down to 5 K, at applied magnetic fields up to 30 kOe. The exchange bias value at 5 K for the strongly oxidized sample is 4.8 kOe against the value of 0.75 kOe for the less oxidized sample. The mean values of the thicknesses of the Co oxide layers are estimated to be 0.6 and 0.3 nm for the more and less oxidized sample, respectively. We propose a method of measuring the exchange bias inducing temperature, i.e., the temperature at which exchange anisotropy is established. We determined the mean inducing temperatures for both samples, which are 55 and 25 K, respectively, for the more and less oxidized samples. Both temperatures are well below the bulk CoO Neel temperature of 292 K. A low value of the inducing temperature of the Co oxide layer is a consequence of its subnanometer thickness, while a large exchange bias value is a consequence of different dimensionality of Co clusters and Co oxide matrix.

Abstract The local structure of Bi4W2/3Mn1/3O8Cl is determined using quantitative transmission electron microscopy. The electron exit wave, which is closely related to the projected crystal potential, is reconstructed and used as a starting point for statistical parameter estimation. This method allows us to refine all atomic positions on a local scale, including those of the light atoms, with a precision in the picometer range. Using this method one is no longer restricted to the information limit of the electron microscope. Our results are in good agreement with x-ray powder diffraction data demonstrating the reliability of the method. Moreover, it will be shown that local effects can be interpreted using this approach.

Year 2006 Publication Ultramicroscopy Abbreviated Journal Ultramicroscopy
  Volume 106 Issue 11-12 Pages 976-980
Keywords A1 Journal article; Electron microscopy for materials research (EMAT)
Abstract An extension to model-based electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) quantification is reported to improve the possibility of modelling fine structure changes in electron energy loss spectra. An equalisation function is used in the energy loss near edge structure (ELNES) region to model the differences between a single atom differential cross section and the cross section for an atom in a crystal. The equalisation function can be shown to approximate the relative density of unoccupied states for the given excitation edge. On a set of 200 experimental h-BN spectra, this technique leads to statistically acceptable models resulting into unbiased estimates of relative concentrations and making the estimated precisions come very close to the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB). The method greatly expands the useability of model-based EELS quantification to spectra with pronounced fine structure. Another benefit of this model is that one also gets an estimate of the unoccupied density of states for a given excitation edge, without having to do background removal and deconvolution, making the outcome intrinsically more reliable and less noisy.   Title Defect structure of ferromagnetic superconducting RuSr2GdCu2O8 Type A1 Journal article
Year 2006 Publication Physical review : B : condensed matter and materials physics Abbreviated Journal Phys Rev B
  Volume 73 Issue 22 Pages
Keywords A1 Journal article; Electron microscopy for materials research (EMAT)
Abstract The structure and defect structure of superconducting ferromagnetic bulk RuSr2GdCu2O8 has been investigated using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and high-resolution scanning transmission microscopy. Two distinct, but closely related structures, due to ordering of rotated RuO6 octahedra and due to Cu substitution in the Ru-O layer, have been revealed. The structure of Ru1-xSr2GdCu2+xO8-delta can be described as a periodic alteration along the c axis of CuO4 planes and RuO6 octahedra. The unit-cell parameters of this phase are root 2a(p) x root 2a(p) x 2c. The possible influence of this phase and defect structure on the sensitivity of the superconductivity and magnetic properties is discussed. Local defects such as 90 S domain boundaries, (130) antiphase boundaries, and the associated dislocations are analyzed.

Abstract We present an efficient method for the quantification of crystalline versus amorphous phase content in mesoporous materials, making use of electron energy loss spectroscopy. The method is based on fitting a superposition of core-loss edges using the maximum likelihood method with measured reference spectra. We apply the method to mesoporous TiO2 samples. We show that the absolute amount of the crystalline phase can be determined with an accuracy below 5%. This method takes also the amorphous phase into account, where standard X-ray diffraction is only quantitative for crystalline phases and not for amorphous phase. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V..   Abstract Addition of yttrium in HfO(2) thin films prepared on silicon by metal organic chemical vapor deposition is investigated in a wide compositional range (2.0-99.5 at. %). The cubic structure of HfO(2) is stabilized for 6.5 at. %. The permittivity is maximum for yttrium content of 6.5-10 at. %; in this range, the effective permittivity, which results from the contribution of both the cubic phase and silicate phase, is of 22. These films exhibit low leakage current density (5x10(-7) A/cm(2) at -1 V for a 6.4 nm film). The cubic phase is stable upon postdeposition high temperature annealing at 900 degrees C under NH(3).
