Abstract |
A microscopic theory, which describes the orientational dynamics of C60 molecules in the face-centered cubic phase of C60-fullerite, is formulated or the case of a complex molecular structure. Interaction centers which comprise atoms, double bonds, and single bonds as molecular constituents contribute to the intermolecular potential. Orientation dependent physical properties are described in terms of symmetry-adapted rotator functions. It is found that a same set of rotator functions is sufficient even in the case of a complex molecular structure. Phase transition temperatures are discussed for various models of molecular structure. |

Abstract |
A procedure for the synthesis of monodisperse spherical mesoporous silica particles (MSMSPs) via the controlled coagulation of silica/surfactant clusters into spherical aggregates with mean diameters of 250-1500 nm has been developed. The synthesis is fast (taking less than 1 h) because identical clusters are simultaneously formed in the reaction mixture. The results of microscopic, x-ray diffraction, adsorption and optical measurements allowed us to conclude that the clusters are similar to 15 nm in size and have hexagonally packed cylindrical pore channels. The channel diameters in MSMSPs obtained with cethyltrimethylammonium bromide and decyltrimethylammonium bromide as structure-directing agents were 3.1 +/- 0.15 and 2.3 +/- 0.12 nm, respectively. The specific surface area and the pore volume of MSMSP were, depending on synthesis conditions, 480-1095 m(2) g(-1) and 0.50-0.65 cm(3) g(-1). The MSMSP were used to grow opal-like photonic-crystal films possessing a hierarchical macro-mesoporous structure, with pores within and between the particles. A selective filling of mesopore channels with glycerol, based on the difference between the capillary pressures in macro- and mesopores, was demonstrated. It is shown that this approach makes it possible to control the photonic bandgap position in mesoporous opal films by varying the degree of mesopore filling with glycerol. Abstract |
Graphene, a new carbon material, is attracting presently an increasing research interest. It stems from the unique electrical and mechanical properties of graphene predicted by theory. Experimental studies of graphene are, however, severely curtailed by a lack of an appropriate technique for its preparation. Mechanical cleavage of graphite proved to be ineffective, since it yields only very small (a few microns in size) particles of monolayer graphene. The rapidly developing approach based on chemical exfoliation of graphite produces large-area coatings composed primarily of arbitrarily oriented multilayer graphene particles. We have developed a technique for preparation of monolayer graphene sheets involving liquid exfoliation of crystalline graphite, which includes synthesis of graphite oxide by deep oxidation as an intermediate stage. Electron diffraction traces, as well as the variation of diffracted intensities with local orientation of graphene sheets, AFM, and HRTEM images testify to a remarkably good monolayer structure of the graphite oxide particles obtained by our technique. These results open a way to setting up high-efficiency production of monolayer graphene sheets appropriate for electrical and optical measurements and fabrication of structures for use in the field of applications. |

Abstract |
A Monte Carlo model is utilized for studying the behavior of electrons in the afterglow of an analytical microsecond dc pulsed glow discharge. This model uses several quantities as input data, such as electric field and potential, ion flux at the cathode, the fast argon ion and atom impact ionization rates, slow electron density, the electrical characterization of the pulse (voltage and current profiles) and temperature profile. These quantities were obtained by earlier Monte Carlo fluid calculations for a pulsed discharge. Our goal is to study the behavior of the so-called Monte Carlo electrons (i.e., those electrons created at the cathode or by ionization collisions in the plasma which are followed by using the Monte Carlo model) from their origin to the moment when they are absorbed at the cell walls or when they have lost their energy by collisions (being transferred to the group of slow electrons) in the afterglow of the pulsed discharge. The thermalization of the electrons is a phenomenon where the electron-electron Coulomb collisions acquire a special importance. Indeed, in the afterglow the cross sections of the other electron reactions taken into account in the model are very low, because of the very low electron energy. We study the electron energy distributions at several times during and after the pulse and at several positions in the plasma cell, focusing on the thermalization and on the behavior of the electrons in the afterglow. Also, the time evolution of the rates of the various collision processes, the average electron energy, the densities of Monte Carlo and slow electrons and the ionization degree are investigated. |

Abstract |
The 3D size, morphology and distribution of autocatalytic-grown Ni4Ti3 precipitates in a Ni51Ti49 single crystal were characterized via a FIB/SEM Slice-and-View procedure and phase-field simulation. Important parameters on size and shape of the precipitates were measured. The pair distribution function and the minimum distance between two precipitates from different variants were calculated to describe the 3D distribution of the autocatalytic-grown Ni4Ti3 precipitates in single crystal Ni-Ti, with a comparison to the polycrystalline Ni50.8Ti49.2 alloy. Phase-field simulation was conducted to study the nucleation behavior of precipitates in the single crystal Ni-Ti. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. |

Molecular dynamics simulations are performed on capped and uncapped PbSe nanocrystals, employing newly developed classical interaction potentials. Here, we show that two uncapped nanocrystals fuse efficiently via direct surface attachment, even if they are initially misaligned. In sharp contrast to the general belief, interparticle dipole interactions do not play a significant role in this oriented attachment process. Furthermore, it is shown that presumably polar, capped PbSe{111} facets are never fully Pb- or Se-terminated. |

Abstract |
A model for an atmospheric pressure inductively coupled plasma (ICP) is developed which allows rather easy extension to a variable number of species and ionisation degrees. This encompasses an easy calculation of transport parameters for mixtures, ionisation and heat capacity. The ICP is modeled in an axisymmetric geometry, taking into account the gas streaming into a flowing ambient gas. A mixture of argon and helium is applied in the injector gas stream as it is often done in laser ablation ICP spectrometry. The results show a strong influence of the added helium on the center of the ICP, which is important for chemical analysis. The length of the central channel is significantly increased and the temperature inside is significantly higher than in the case of pure argon. This means that higher gas volume flow rates can be applied by addition of helium compared to the use of pure argon. This has the advantage that the gas velocity in the transport system towards the ICP can be increased, which allows shorter washout-times. Consequently, shorter measurement times can be achieved, e.g. for spatial mapping analyses in laser ablation ICP spectrometry. Furthermore, the higher temperature and the longer effective plasma length will increase the maximum size of droplets or particles injected into the ICP that are completely evaporated at the detection site. Thus, we expect an increase of the analytical performance of the ICP by helium addition to the injector gas. |

Abstract |
Exciton states in self-assembled InP/In0.49Ga0.51P quantum dots subject to magnetic fields up to 50T are calculated. Strain and band mixing are explicitly taken into account in the single-particle models of the electronic structure, while an exact diagonalization approach is adopted to compute the exciton states. Reasonably good agreement with magneto-photoluminescence measurements on InP self-assembled quantum dots is found. As a result of the polarization and angular momentum sensitive selection rules, the exciton ground state is dark. For in-plane polarized light, the magnetic field barely affects the exciton spatial localization, and consequently the exciton oscillator strength for recombination increases only slightly with increasing field. For z polarized light, a sharp increase of the oscillator strength beyond 30 T is found which is attributed to the enhanced s character of the relevant portion of the exciton wave function. Abstract |
An experimental and theoretical investigation was made of flux jumps and irreversible magnetization curves of mesoscopic Al superconducting rings. In the small magnetic-field region the change of vorticity with magnetic field can be larger than unity. This behavior is connected with the existence of several metastable states of different vorticities. The intentional introduction of a defect in the ring has a large effect on the size of the flux jumps. Calculations based on the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau model allows us to explain the experimental results semiquantitatively. |

Abstract |
The transition Fm (3) over bar m -->Pa (3) over bar in solid C-60 is driven by the condensation of orientational modes belonging to X-5(+) irreducible representations (irreps) of Fm (3) over bar m. Taking into account irreps up to the manifold l = 12, we have studied the primary and secondary orientational order parameters loops). We have numerically solved the coupled molecular field equations for these oops and calculated the temperature dependence of Bragg reflection intensities. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. Abstract |
Multiple-step martensitic transformations of an aged Ni51Ti49 single crystal using calorimetric method were investigated. Results show that for short aging times (1045 min) multiple-step martensitic transformations on cooling occur in two steps. Applying intermediate aging times (1.254 h) results in three steps and long aging times (more than 8 h) lead to two-step martensitic transformations again. This behavior has not been recognized in NiTi single crystals in literatures. It can be related to the heterogeneity of composition and stress fields around Ni4Ti3 precipitates. |

Abstract |
New polymorphs of NaMnO2 have been observed using transmission electron microscopy and synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction. Coherent twin planes confined to the (NaMnO2) layers, parallel to the (10 (1) over bar) crystallographic planes of the monoclinic layered rock-salt-type alpha-NaMnO2 (O3) structure, form quasi-periodic modulated sequences, with the known alpha-and beta-NaMnO2 polymorphs as the two limiting cases. The energy difference between the polymorphic forms, estimated using a DFT-based structure relaxation, is on the scale of the typical thermal energies that results in a high degree of stacking disorder in these compounds. The results unveil the remarkable effect of the twin planes on both the magnetic and electrochemical properties. The polymorphism drives the magnetic ground state from a quasi-1D spin system for the geometrically frustrated alpha-polymorph through a two-leg spin ladder for the intermediate stacking sequence toward a quasi-2D magnet for the beta-polymorph. A substantial increase of the equilibrium potential for Na deintercalation upon increasing the concentration of the twin planes is calculated, providing a possibility to tune the electrochemical potential of the layered rock-salt ABO(2) cathodes by engineering the materials with a controlled concentration of twins. |

Abstract |
Multiply connected mesoscopic: superconductors are considered within the framework of the nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau theory. The two coupled nonlinear equations are solved numerically and we investigated the properties of a superconducting ring, two concentric rings, and an asymmetric ring. We find that (i) for a mesoscopic superconducting ring the flux through the hole is not quantized, (ii) two concentric mesoscopic superconducting rings are magnetically coupled and the interaction energy increases with increasing sample thickness, and (iii) in asymmetric rings, a stationary phase slip state is predicted. |

Abstract |
When strained in tension, high-manganese austenitic twinning induced plasticity (TWIP) steels achieve very high strength and elongation before necking. The main hypotheses available in the literature about the origin of their excellent work hardening include deformation twinning and dynamic strain ageing. In order to provide some answers, various experiments at different scales were conducted on FeMnC steels and the Fe28 wt%Mn3.5 wt%Al2.8 wt%Si alloy. At a macroscopic scale, tensile tests were performed on all the studied grades. It was shown that, though the FeMnAlSi based alloy retains very high elongation, the FeMnC steels properties are even more extraordinary. Tensile tests at different strain rates with the help of digital image correlation were also performed on the Fe20 wt%Mn1.2 wt%C steel to study the PLC effect occurring in this type of steel. It is suggested that supplementary hardening could come from reorientation of MnC pairs in the cores of the dislocations. At a microscopic scale, the Fe20 wt%Mn1.2 wt%C TWIP steel and the FeMnAlSi grade were thoroughly investigated by means of in situ TEM analysis. In the FeMnC steel, the formed twins could also lead to a composite effect, since they contain plenty of sessile dislocations. In the FeMnAlSi alloy, mechanical twins are thicker and contain fewer defects, leading to a lower work hardening than the other grade. |
