Abstract: Herein, we investigate the DDT (1-dodecanethiol) functionalization of exfoliated MoS2 by using experimental and theoretical tools. For the functionalization of MoS2, DDT treatment was incorporated into the conventional NMP (N-methyl pyrrolidone) exfoliation procedure. Afterward, it has been demonstrated that the functionalization process is successful through optical, morphological and theoretical analysis. The D, G and 2LA peaks seen in the Raman spectrum of exfoliated NMP-MoS2 particles, indicate the formation of graphitic species on MoS2 sheets. In addition, as the DDT ratio increases, the vacant sites on MoS2 sheets diminish. Moreover, at an optimized ratio of DDT-NMP, the maximum number of graphitic quantum dots (GQDs) is observed on MoS2 nanosheets. Specifically, the STEM and AFM data confirm that GQDs reside on the MoS2 nano-sheets and also that the particle size of the DDT-MoS2 is mostly fixed, while the NMP-MoS2 show many smaller and distributed sizes. The comparison of PL intensities of the NMP-MoS2 and DDT-MoS2 samples states a 10-fold increment is visible, and a 60-fold increment in NIR region photoluminescent properties. Moreover, our results lay out understanding and perceptions on the surface and edge chemistry of exfoliated MoS2 and open up more opportunities for MoS2 and GQD particles with broader applications.

Abstract: We investigate the adsorption process of small molecules on graphene through first-principles calculations and show the presence of two main charge transfer mechanisms. Which mechanism is the dominant one depends on the magnetic properties of the adsorbing molecules. We explain these mechanisms through the density of states of the system and the molecular orbitals of the adsorbates, and demonstrate the possible difficulties in calculating the charge transfer from first principles between a graphene sheet and a molecule. Our results are in good agreement with experiment.

Abstract: The thermal properties of a two-dimensional classical cluster of negatively charged particles bound by a punctual positive charge are presented. The melting phenomenon is analyzed and the features which characterize such a solid-liquid transition are highlighted. We found that the presence of metastable states strongly modifies the melting scenario, and that the melting temperature of the system is determined by the height of the saddle point energy separating the ground state and the metastable state. Due to the particular type of confinement potential considered in this paper, we also found that, at sufficiently large temperature, the cluster can become thermally ionized.

Abstract: The properties of a clean superconductor with nanoscale dimensions are governed by quantum confinement of the electrons. This results in a spatially inhomogeneous superconducting condensate and in the formation of new Andreev-type quasiparticle states. These states are mainly located beyond regions where the superconducting condensate is enhanced. A numerical self-consistent solution of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations for a cylindrical metallic nanowire shows that these new Andreev-type states decrease the ratio of the energy gap to the critical temperature.

Abstract: In this letter, we address the bipolar resistive switching phenomenology in scaled TiN\HfO2\Hf cells. By means of stack engineering using a thin Al2O3 layer inserted either at the TiN\HfO2 or at the Hf\HfO2 interface, we demonstrate that the reset operation takes place close to the TiNanode. Due to the increase of the oxygen-vacancy profile from the TiN to the Hf interface, the filament-confining and wide band-gap Al2O3 layer should indeed be engineered at the interface with the TiN electrode in order to further improve the switching control and to allow reaching larger state resistances. Abstract: We investigated the mixing and segregation of a system consisting of two different species of particles, having different charges, interacting through a pure Coulomb potential, and confined in a three-dimensional parabolic trap. The structure of the cluster and its normal mode spectrum are analyzed as a function of the relative charge and the relative number of different types of particles. We found that (a) the system can be in a mixed or segregated state depending on the relative charge ratio parameter and (b) the segregation process is mediated by a first or second order structural phase transition which strongly influences the magic cluster properties of the system.

Abstract: Starting from fully converged density-functional theory calculations, the quasiparticle corrections are calculated for different sized Si and Ge nanowires using the GW approximation. The effectiveness of recently developed techniques in speeding up the convergence of the quasiparticle calculations is demonstrated. The complete quasiparticle band structures are also obtained using an interpolation technique based on maximallylocalized Wannier functions. From the quasiparticle results, we assess the correctness of the commonly applied scissor-shift correction. Dispersion changes are observed, which are also reflected in changes in the effective band masses calculated taking into account quasiparticle corrections.

Abstract: We report a direct observation of quantum dots formed spontaneously in a thick InGaN epilayer by high resolution transmission electron microscopy. Investigation of a (280 nm thick) In0.22Ga0.78N single layer, emitting in the blue/green spectral region, reveals quantum dots with estimated sizes in the range of 1.5-3 nm. Abstract: An inductively coupled plasma connected to a mass spectrometer interface (sampling cone) is computationally investigated. Typical plasma characteristics, such as gas flow velocity, plasma temperature and electron density, are calculated in two dimensions (cylindrical symmetry) and compared with and without a mass spectrometer sampling interface. The results obtained from our model compare favorably with experimental data reported in the literature. A dramatic increase in the plasma velocity is reported in the region close to the interface. Furthermore, a cooled metal interface lowers the plasma temperature and electron density on the axial channel very close to the sampling cone but the corresponding values in the off axial regions are increased. Therefore, the effect of the interface strongly depends on the measurement position. It is shown that even a small shift from the actual position of the sampler leads to a considerable change of the results.

Abstract: Grains of K-feldspar are commonly seen as heterogeneous mixtures of mineral species and varieties with random microstructures. Most consider that observable features arise from incomplete re-equilibrations owing to slow kinetic and localized effects of aqueous fluids (catalyst), with geological environment and chemical impurities playing only a secondary role. Here, an alternative approach is explored by studying well-preserved regularities in the twin patterns of K-feldspars formed in the subsolidus stage from a historical perspective. Selected samples from granitic pegmatites were studied by polarized light optical microscopy (PLOM), electron-probe micro-analysis (EPMA), scanning (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), cathodoluminescence imaging (CL), micro-Raman spectroscopy (MRS) and 31P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). We have found that the essential feature of this crystalline medium is the astounding capability to recrystallize in self-organized twin patterns. The mechanism involves coupling between short-range atomic motion, and long-range displacive correlations propagated as ideal and non-ideal Albite and Pericline orientations. We suggest a general evolutionary process to explain the development of macroscopic twin patterns in microcline, based on three twin generations as microtwins, macrotwins and cryptotwins. Evolutionary variants also were identified; they depend on both internal crystallochemical features and an external geological stimulus. We suggest a continuous monoclinictriclinic transformation for impure K-feldspar, whereas a discontinuous inversion occurs where the starting composition is close to the ideal chemical formula. Twin patterns can evolve by twin coarsening to single-orientation microcline if the system releases energy, or by twin fragmentation to finely twinned microcline if the system stores energy. Hence, K-feldspar is seen here as a very sensitive medium in which precious geological information is recorded in the form of twin patterns, and thus useful for general geological challenges.

Abstract: Recent observation of unusual vortex patterns in MgB2 single crystals raised speculations about possible type-1.5 superconductivity in two-band materials, mixing the properties of both type-I and type-II superconductors. However, the strict application of the standard two-band Ginzburg-Landau (GL) theory results in simply proportional order parameters of the two bandsand does not support the type-1.5 behavior. Here we derive the extended GL formalism (accounting all terms of the next order over the small τ=1-T/Tc parameter) for a two-band clean s-wave superconductor and show that the two condensates generally have different spatial scales, with the difference disappearing only in the limit T→Tc. The extended version of the two-band GL formalism improves the validity of GL theory below Tc and suggests revisiting the earlier calculations based on the standard model.
