Abstract |
Using first principles calculations we showed that the electronic and optical properties of single-layer black phosphorus (BP) depend strongly on the applied strain. Due to the strong anisotropic atomic structure of BP, its electronic conductivity and optical response are sensitive to the magnitude and the orientation of the applied strain. We found that the inclusion of many body effects is essential for the correct description of the electronic properties of monolayer BP; for example, while the electronic gap of strainless BP is found to be 0.90 eV by using semilocal functionals, it becomes 2.31 eV when many-body effects are taken into account within the G(0)W(0) scheme. Applied tensile strain was shown to significantly enhance electron transport along zigzag direction of BP. Furthermore, biaxial strain is able to tune the optical band gap of monolayer BP from 0.38 eV (at -8% strain) to 2.07 eV (at 5.5%). The exciton binding energy is also sensitive to the magnitude of the applied strain. It is found to be 0.40 eV for compressive biaxial strain of -8%, and it becomes 0.83 eV for tensile strain of 4%. Our calculations demonstrate that the optical response of BP can be significantly tuned using strain engineering which appears as a promising way to design novel photovoltaic devices that capture a broad range of solar spectrum. |

Abstract |
The time evolution of a wave packet in strained graphene is studied within the tight-binding model and continuum model. The effect of an external magnetic field, as well as a strain-induced pseudomagnetic field, on the wave-packet trajectories and zitterbewegung are analyzed. Combining the effects of strain with those of an external magnetic field produces an effective magnetic field which is large in one of the Dirac cones, but can be practically zero in the other. We construct an efficient valley filter, where for a propagating incoming wave packet consisting of momenta around the K and K' Dirac points, the outgoing wave packet exhibits momenta in only one of these Dirac points while the components of the packet that belong to the other Dirac point are reflected due to the Lorentz force. We also found that the zitterbewegung is permanent in time in the presence of either external or strain-induced magnetic fields, but when both the external and strain-induced magnetic fields are present, the zitterbewegung is transient in one of the Dirac cones, whereas in the other cone the wave packet exhibits permanent spatial oscillations. |

Abstract |
We have studied the temperature and field dependencies of the critical current I(C) in the Nb-Fe(0.1)Si(0.9)-Nb Josephson junction with a tunneling barrier formed by a paramagnetic insulator. We demonstrate that in these junctions coexistence of both the 0 and the pi states within one tunnel junction occurs, and leads to the appearance of a sharp cusp in the temperature dependence I(C)(T), similar to the I(C)(T) cusp found for the 0-pi transition in metallic pi junctions. This cusp is not related to the 0-pi temperature-induced transition itself, but is caused by the different temperature dependencies of the opposing 0 and pi supercurrents through the barrier. |

Abstract |
We study the structural phase transitions in confined systems of strongly interacting particles. We consider infinite quasi-one-dimensional systems with different pairwise repulsive interactions in the presence of an external confinement following a power law. Within the framework of Landaus theory, we find the necessary conditions to observe continuous transitions and demonstrate that the only allowed continuous transition is between the single- and the double-chain configurations and that it only takes place when the confinement is parabolic. We determine analytically the behavior of the system at the transition point and calculate the critical exponents. Furthermore, we perform Monte Carlo simulations and find a perfect agreement between theory and numerics. |

Abstract |
The magnetic coupling between two concentric mesoscopic superconductors with nonzero thickness is studied using the nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau theory. We calculated the free energy, the expelled field, the total field profile, the Cooper-pair density, and the current density distribution. By putting a smaller superconducting disk or ring in the center of a larger ring, the properties change drastically. Extra ground-state transitions are found, where the total vorticity stays the same, but the vorticity of the inner superconductor changes by 1. Due to the magnetic coupling, the current in the external ring exhibits extra jumps at the transition fields where the vorticity of the inner superconductor changes. In this case, for certain temperatures, re-entrant behavior and switching on and off of the superconducting behavior of the rings are found as a function of the magnetic field. A H-T phase diagram is obtained for the situation where the inner ring has a higher critical temperature than the outer ring. An analytic expression for the magnetic coupling is obtained for thin rings and extreme type-II superconductors. |

Abstract |
Using the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) theory, we calculate the stability of sample symmetry-induced vortex-antivortex molecules in a mesoscopic superconducting bilayer exposed to a homogeneous magnetic field. We demonstrate the conditions under which the two condensates cooperatively broaden the field-temperature stability range of the composite (joint) vortex-antivortex state. In cases when such broadening is not achieved, a reentrance of the vortex-antivortex state is found at lower temperatures. In a large portion of the phase diagram noncomposite states are possible, in which the antivortex is present in only one of the layers. In this case, we demonstrate that the vortex-antivortex molecule in one of the layers can be pinned and enlarged by interaction with a vortex molecule in the other. Using analogies in the respective GL formalisms, we map our findings for the bilayer onto mesoscopic two-band superconductors. |

Abstract |
We theoretically find that the resistance of a superconducting microbridge or nanowire decreases while the retrapping current I(r) for the transition to the superconducting state increases when one suppresses the magnitude of the order parameter vertical bar Delta vertical bar in the attached superconducting leads. This effect is a consequence of the increased energy interval for diffusion of the “hot” nonequilibrium quasiparticles (induced by the oscillations of vertical bar Delta vertical bar in the center of the microbridge) to the leads. The effect is absent in short microbridges (with length less than the coherence length) and it is relatively weak in long microbridges (with length larger than the inelastic relaxation length of the nonequilibrium distribution function). A nonmonotonous dependence of I(r) on the length of the microbridge is predicted. Our results are important for the explanation of the enhancement of the critical current and the appearance of negative magnetoresistance observed in many recent experiments on superconducting microbridges or nanowires. |

Abstract |
We report on the crystal structure and magnetism of the iron-based oxyfluoride Bi4Fe5O13F, a material prototype of the Cairo pentagonal spin lattice. The crystal structure of Bi4Fe5O13F is determined by a combination of neutron diffraction, synchrotron x-ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy. It comprises layers of FeO6 octahedra and FeO4 tetrahedra forming deformed pentagonal units. The topology of these layers resembles a pentagonal least-perimeter tiling, which is known as the Cairo lattice. This topology gives rise to frustrated exchange couplings and underlies a sequence of magnetic transitions at T-1 = 62 K, T-2 = 71 K, and T-N = 178 K, as determined by thermodynamic measurements and neutron diffraction. Below T-1, Bi4Fe5O13F forms a fully ordered non-collinear antiferromagnetic structure, whereas the magnetic state between T-1 and T-N may be partially disordered according to the sizable increase in the magnetic entropy at T-1 and T-2. Bi4Fe5O13F reveals unanticipated magnetic transitions on the pentagonal Cairo spin lattice and calls for a further work on finite-temperature properties of this strongly frustrated spin model. Abstract |
The influence of random pinning on the vortex dynamics in a periodic square potential under an external drive is investigated. Using numerical experiments and theoretical approach, we found several dynamical regimes of vortex motion that are different from the ones for a regular pinning potential. Vortex transfer is controlled by kinks and antikinks, which either pre-exist in the system or appear spontaneously in pairs and then propagate. When kinks and antikinks collide, they annihilate. We provide clear physical interpretations of the observed features. |

Abstract |
A microscopic theory for the coupling of molecular orientations with acoustic lattice displacements is proposed. The relevant interaction is quadratic in the orientational-order-parameter variables and linear in longitudinal strains. The coupling is evaluated for a complex molecular structure. The intermolecular potential is obtained from interaction centers placed at nuclei and at the centers of interatomic bonds. The free energy is derived and the experimental consequences of the theory are studied. The Clausius-Clapeyron equation for orientational melting is obtained. The theory explains the decrease of the lattice constant at the first-order phase transition and the increase of the transition temperature with applied pressure. |

Abstract |
We investigate the stability of noncomposite fractional vortex states in a mesoscopic two-band superconductor within the two-component Ginzburg-Landau model. Our analysis explicitly takes into account the relationship between the model parameters and microscopic material parameters, such as partial density of states, Fermi velocities and elements of the electron-phonon coupling matrix. We have found that states with different phase winding number in each band (L-1 not equal L-2) and fractional flux can exist in many different configurations, including rather unconventional ones where the dominating band carries larger winding number and states where vertical bar L-1 – L-2 vertical bar > 1. We present a detailed analysis of the stability of the observed vortex structures with respect to changing the microscopic parameters, showing that, in the weak coupling case, fractional vortex states can be assessed in essentially the whole range of temperatures and applied magnetic fields in which both bands are active. Finally, we propose an efficient way of increasing the range of parameters for which these fractional vortex states can be stabilized. In particular, our proposal allows for observation of fractional vortex structures in materials with stronger coupling, where those states are forbidden at a homogeneous field. This is accomplished with the help of the stray fields of a suitably prepared magnetic dot placed nearby the superconducting disk. |

Abstract |
Freestanding silicene is predicted to display comparable electronic properties as graphene. However, the yet synthesized silicenelike structures have been only realized on different substrates which turned out to exhibit versatile crystallographic structures that are very different from the theoretically predicted buckled phase of freestanding silicene. This calls for a different approach where silicene is stabilized using very weakly interacting surfaces. We propose here a route by using graphene bilayer as a scaffold. The confinement between the flat graphene layers results in a planar clustering of Si atoms with small buckling, which is energetically unfavorable in vacuum. Buckled hexagonal arrangement of Si atoms similar to freestanding silicene is observed for large clusters, which, in contrast to Si atoms on metallic surfaces, is only very weakly van der Waals coupled to the graphene layers. These clusters are found to be stable well above room temperature. Our findings, which are supported by density-functional tight-binding calculations, show that intercalating bilayer graphene with Si is a favorable route to realize silicene. |

Abstract |
The superconducting state of an infinitely long superconducting cylinder surrounded by a medium which enhances its superconductivity near the boundary is studied within the nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau theory. This enhancement can be due to the proximity of another superconductor or due to surface treatment. Quantities such as the free energy, the magnetization and the Cooper-pair density are calculated. Phase diagrams are obtained to investigate how the critical field and the critical temperature depend on this surface enhancement for different values of the Ginzburg-Landau parameter kappa. Increasing the superconductivity near the surface leads to higher critical fields and critical temperatures. For small cylinder diameters only giant vortex states nucleate, while for larger cylinders multivortices can nucleate. The stability of these multivortex states also depends on the surface enhancement. For type-I superconductors we found the remarkable result that for a range of values of the surface extrapolation length the superconductor can transit from the Meissner state into superconducting states with vorticity L > 1. Such a behavior is not found for the case of large kappa, i.e., type-II superconductivity, |

Abstract |
The depth strain profile in silicon from the Si (001) substrate to the surface of a 2 nm thick Si/12 nm thick SiGe/bulk Si heterostructure has been determined by medium energy ion scattering (MEIS). It shows with sub-nanometer resolution and high strain sensitivity that the thin Si cap presents residual compressive strain caused by Ge diffusion coming from the fully strained SiGe layer underneath. The strain state of the SiGe buffer have been checked by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and nano-beam electron diffraction (NBED) measurements. |

Abstract |
Using multicomponent Ginzburg-Landau simulations, we show a plethora of vortex states possible in mesoscopic three-band superconductors. We find that mesoscopic confinement stabilizes chiral states, with nontrivial phase differences between the band condensates, as the ground state of the system. As a consequence, we report the broken-symmetry vortex states, the chiral states where vortex cores in different band condensates do not coincide (split-core vortices), as well as fractional-flux vortex states with broken time-reversal symmetry. |

Abstract |
In this paper several nanodevices which realize basic single heavy-hole qubit operations are proposed and supported by time-dependent self-consistent Poisson-Schrodinger calculations using a four band heavy-hole-light-hole model. In particular we propose a set of nanodevices which can act as Pauli X, Y, Z quantum gates and as a gate that acts similar to a Hadamard gate (i.e., it creates a balanced superposition of basis states but with an additional phase factor) on the heavy-hole spin qubit. We also present the design and simulation of a gated semiconductor nanodevice which can realize an arbitrary sequence of all these proposed single quantum logic gates. The proposed devices exploit the self-focusing effect of the hole wave function which allows for guiding the hole along a given path in the form of a stable solitonlike wave packet. Thanks to the presence of the Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling, the motion of the hole along a certain direction is equivalent to the application of an effective magnetic field which induces in turn a coherent rotation of the heavy-hole spin. The hole motion and consequently the quantum logic operation is initialized only by weak static voltages applied to the electrodes which cover the nanodevice. The proposed gates allow for an all electric and ultrafast (tens of picoseconds) heavy-hole spin manipulation and give the possibility to implement a scalable architecture of heavy-hole spin qubits for quantum computation applications. |

Abstract |
The lowest-energy configurations of Cn(n≤55) clusters are obtained using the energy-minimization technique with the conjugate gradient method where a modified Brenner potential is invoked to describe the carbon and hydrocarbon interaction. We found that the ground-state configuration consists of a single ring for small number of C atoms and multiring structures are found with increasing n, which can be in planar, bowl-like or caplike form. Contrary to previous predictions, the binding energy Eb does not show even-odd oscillations and only small jumps are found in the Eb(n) curve as a consequence of specific types of edges or equivalently the number of secondary atoms. We found that hydrogenation of the edge atoms may change the ground-state configuration of the nanocluster. In both cases we determined the magic clusters. Special attention is paid to trigonal and hexagonal shaped carbon clusters and to clusters having a graphenelike configuration. Trigonal clusters are never the ground state while hexagonal-shaped clusters are only the ground state when they have zigzag edges. |

Abstract |
We have calculated the plasmon modes in graphene double layer structures at finite temperatures, taking into account the inhomogeneity of the dielectric background of the system. The effective dielectric function is obtained from the solution of the Poisson equation of a three-layer dielectric medium with graphene sheets located at the interfaces, separating the different materials. Due to the momentum dispersion of the effective dielectric function, the intra- and interlayer bare Coulomb interactions in the graphene double layer system acquires an additional momentum dependence-an effect that is of the order of the interlayer interaction itself. We show that the energies of the in-phase and out-of-phase plasmon modes are determined largely by different values of the spatially dependent effective dielectric function. The effect of the dielectric inhomogeneity increases with temperature, and even at high temperatures the energy shift induced by the dielectric inhomogeneity and temperature itself remains larger than the broadening of the plasmon energy dispersions due to the Landau damping. The obtained new features of the plasmon dispersions can be observed in frictional drag measurements and in inelastic light scattering and electron energy-loss spectroscopies. |

Abstract |
We study the energy and temperature relaxation of electrons in graphene on a piezoelectric substrate. Scattering from the combined potential of extrinsic piezoelectric surface acoustical (PA) phonons of the substrate and intrinsic deformation acoustical phonons of graphene is considered for a (non) degenerate gas of Dirac fermions. It is shown that in the regime of low energies or temperatures the PA phonons dominate the relaxation and change qualitatively its character. This prediction is relevant for quantum metrology and electronic applications using graphene devices and suggests an experimental setup for probing electron-phonon coupling in graphene. |
