Title Machine Learning for Fast Characterization of Magnetic Logic Devices Type P1 Proceeding
Year 2018 Publication (edaps 2018) Abbreviated Journal
Volume Issue (up) Pages
Keywords P1 Proceeding; Condensed Matter Theory (CMT)
Abstract Non-charge-based logic devices are promising candidates for future logic circuits. Interest in studying and developing these devices has grown dramatically in the past decade as they possess key advantages over conventional CMOS technology. Due to their novel designs, a large number of micromagnetic simulations are required to fully characterize the behavior of these devices. The number and complexity of these simulations place large computational requirements on device development. We use state-of-the-art machine learning techniques to expedite identification of their behavior. Several intelligent sampling strategies are combined with machine learning multi-class classification models. These techniques are applied to a recently developed exchange-driven magnetic logic scheme that utilizes direct exchange coupling as the main driver.

Title A facile synthesis of Ag@PdAg core-shell architecture for efficient purification of ethene feedstock Type A1 Journal article
Year 2019 Publication Journal of catalysis Abbreviated Journal
Volume 369 Issue (up) Pages 440-449
Keywords A1 Journal article; Electron microscopy for materials research (EMAT)
Abstract Precise control of elemental configurations within multimetallic nanoparticles could enable access to functional nanomaterials with significant performance benefits. Here, we present a one-pot synthesis of supported Ag@PdAg core-shell catalyst with an ordered PdAg alloy shell and an Ag core. Both the relative reduction potential and ratio of metal precursors are essential for this synthesis strategy. The distinguished properties of Ag@PdAg, particularly the electronic structure, indicates the existence of electron modification not only between Pd and Ag on PdAg shell, but between Ag core and alloy shell. The Ag@PdAg catalyst displays 97% ethene yield in the partial hydrogenation of acetylene, which is 2.0 and 8.1 times that of over PdAg alloy and pure Pd catalysts, and this is the most selective catalyst reported to data under industrial evaluation conditions. Moreover, this core-shell structure exhibits preferable stability with comparison to PdAg alloy catalyst. The facile synthesis of core-shell architecture with alloy shell structure provides a new platform for efficient catalytic transfer of chemical resource. (C) 2018 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract The study presents a 2D fluid plasma model of a gliding arc discharge for dissociation of CO2 which allows its subsequent conversion into value-added chemicals. The model is based on the balance equations of charged and neutral particles, the electron energy balance equation, the gas thermal balance equation and the current continuity equation. By choosing the modeling domain to be the plane perpendicular to the arc current, the numerical calculations are significantly simplified. Thus, the model allows us to explore the influence of the gas instabilities (turbulences) on the energy efficiency of CO2 conversion. This paper presents results for plasma parameters at different values of the effective turbulent thermal conductivity leading to enhanced energy transport.

Title A spatial approach to identify priority areas for pesticide pollution mitigation Type A1 Journal article
Year 2019 Publication Journal of environmental management Abbreviated Journal
Volume 246 Issue (up) Pages 583-593
Keywords A1 Journal article; Sustainable Energy, Air and Water Technology (DuEL)
Abstract Identifying priority areas is an essential step in developing management strategies to reduce pesticide loads in surface water. A spatially explicit model-based approach was developed to detect priority areas for diffuse pesticide pollution at catchment scale. The method uses available datasets and considers different pesticide pathways in the environment post-application. The approach was applied in a catchment area in SE Flanders (Belgium) as a case study. Calculated risk areas were obtained using detailed landscape data and combining pesticide emissions and hydrological connectivity. The risk areas obtained were further compared with an alternative observation-based method, developed specifically for this study site that includes long-term field observations and local expert knowledge. Both methods equally classified 50% of the areas. The impact of crop rotation on the calculated risk was analysed. High-risk areas were identified and added to a cumulative map over all five years to evaluate temporal variations. The model-based approach was used for the initial identification of risk areas at the study site. The tool helps to prioritise zones and detect particular fields to target landscape mitigation measures to reduce diffuse pesticide pollution reaching surface water bodies.

Abstract As the field of perovskite optoelectronics developed, a plethora of strategies has arisen to control their electronic and morphological characteristics for the purpose of producing high efficiency devices. Unfortunately, despite this wealth of deposition approaches, the community experiences a great deal of irreproducibility between different laboratories, batches and preparation methods. Aiming to address this issue, we developed a simple deposition method based on gas quenching that yields smooth films for a wide range of perovskite compositions, in single, double, triple and quadruple cation varieties, and produces planar heterojunction devices with competitive efficiencies, so far up to 20%.

Abstract Excavations at the Cistercian nunnery of Clairefontaine, located near Arlon in the south of Belgium, revealed an assemblage of 18th-century colorless glass. The morphology of the vessels and the engraved decoration suggest a central European origin or, at least, stylistic inspiration. The composition of the glass points to a recipe combining silica, lime, and potash: a colorless potash glass a la facon de Boheme. This article considers the technology, morphology, and origin of the vessels. The art-historical analysis is supported by chemical research (scanning electron microscopy energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy [SEM-EDX]). The finds are also discussed in light of the emerging northwestern European glass industry, changing consumer practices during the 18th century, and their meaning for the inhabitants of the abbey.

Title Artificial orpiment, a new pigment in Rembrandt's palette Type A1 Journal article
Year 2017 Publication Heritage science Abbreviated Journal
Volume 5 Issue (up) Pages 26
Keywords A1 Journal article; Art; AXES (Antwerp X-ray Analysis, Electrochemistry and Speciation)
Abstract This paper reports on how the application of macro X-ray fluorescence (MA-XRF) imaging, in combination with the re-examination of existing paint cross-sections, has led to the discovery of a new pigment in Rembrandt's palette: artificial orpiment. In the NWO Science4Arts 'ReVisRembrandt' project, novel chemical imaging techniques are being developed and applied to the study of Rembrandt's late paintings in order to help resolve outstanding questions and to gain a better understanding of his late enigmatic painting technique. One of the selected case studies is the Portrait of a Couple as Isaac and Rebecca, known as 'The Jewish Bride', dated c. 1665 and on view in the Rijksmuseum. During the re-installation of the Rijksmuseum in 2013, the picture was scanned using the Bruker M6 Jetstream MAXRF scanner. The resulting elemental distribution maps made it possible to distinguish many features in the painting, such as bone black remains of the original hat (P, Ca maps), and the now discolored smalt-rich background (Co, Ni, As, K maps). The arsenic (As) map also revealed areas of high-intensity in Isaac's sleeve and Rebecca's dress where it could be established that it was not related with the pigment smalt that also contains arsenic. This pointed to the presence of a yellow or orange arsenic-containing pigment, such as realgar or orpiment that is not associated with the artist's palette. Subsequent examination of existing paint cross-sections from these locations taken by Karin Groen in the 1990s identified isolated, almost perfectly round particles of arsenic sulfide. The round shape corresponds with published findings on a purified form of artificial orpiment glass obtained by dry processing, a sublimation reaction. In bright field, the particles characteristically exhibit a dark cross in the middle caused by internal light reflections. The results of additional non-invasive techniques (portable XRD and portable Raman) are discussed, as well as the implications of this finding and how it fits with Rembrandt's late experimental painting technique.
