Abstract |
Near-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (NEXAFS)1 is an essential analytical tool in material science. Combining NEXAFS with scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM) adds spatial resolution and the possibility to study individual nanostructures2, 3. Here, we describe a full-field transmission X-ray microscope (TXM) that generates high-resolution, large-area NEXAFS data with a collection rate two orders of magnitude faster than is possible with STXM. The TXM optical design combines a spectral resolution of E/ΔE = 1 × 104 with a spatial resolution of 25 nm in a field of view of 1520 µm and a data acquisition time of ~1 s. As an example, we present image stacks and polarization-dependent NEXAFS spectra from individual anisotropic sodium and protonated titanate nanoribbons. Our NEXAFS-TXM technique has the advantage that one image stack visualizes a large number of nanostructures and therefore already contains statistical information. This new high-resolution NEXAFS-TXM technique opens the way to advanced nanoscale science studies. |

Abstract |
Microporous zeolite NaX-FAU has been systemically evaluated for the oral delivery of the poorly water-soluble compound danazol. For this purpose, danazol-loaded zeolitic particles were prepared by the incipient wetness method and were characterized by means of N-2 physisorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The zeolitic formulation shows a high drug payload and drug stability over a period of six months under accelerated storage conditions. The dissolution profile of danazol-loaded zeolitic particles was assessed in simulated gastric fluid (SGF) pH 1.2; fasted state simulated intestinal fluids (FaSSIF) and fed state simulated intestinal fluid (FeSSIF) showing a gradual and increasing drug dissolution in the different media. Ex vivo studies using the everted gut sac model show an increased drug transport across rat intestinal epithelium when loaded in the zeolitic particles. Our results suggest that microporous Faujasite zeolite (NaX-FAU) could be used as a drug delivery system to facilitate the oral delivery of poorly water soluble compounds. |

Abstract |
Three series of poly(butylene succinate) (PBSu) nanocomposites containing 0.5, 1 and 2.5 wt% strontium hydroxyapatite [Sr-5(PO4)(3)OH] nanorods (SrHAp nrds) were prepared by in situ polymerisation. The structural effects of Sr-5(PO4)(3)OH nanorods, for the different concentrations, inside the polymeric matrix (PBSu), were studied through high angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM). HAADF-STEM measurements revealed that the SrHAp nanorods at low concentrations are dispersed inside the polymeric PBSu matrix while in 1 wt% some aggregates are formed. These aggregations affect the mechanical properties giving an enhancement for the concentration of 0.5 wt% SrHAp nrds in tensile strength, while a reduction is recorded for higher loadings of the nanofiller. Studies on enzymatic hydrolysis revealed that all nanocomposites present higher hydrolysis rates than neat PBSu, indicating that nanorods accelerate the hydrolysis degradation process. In vitro bioactivity tests prove that SrHAp nrds promote the formation of hydroxyapatite on the PBSu surface. All nanocomposites were tested also in relevant cell culture using osteoblast-like cells (MG-63) to demonstrate their biocompatibility showing SrHAp nanorods support cell attachment. |

Abstract |
(Sr1-xCax)(33)Bi-24,partial derivative Al48O141+3 partial derivative/2 fullerenoid solid solutions have been synthesized and the effect of partial substitution of Sr by Ca has been characterized by (scanning) transmission electron microscopy, applying different imaging methods. Most of the defects commonly observed in face centered cubic compounds, have also been observed in (Sr1-xCax)(33)Bi24-partial derivative Al48O141+3 partial derivative/2. Based on purely geometrical and topological models, structural presentations for the coherent twin boundaries and stacking faults have been constructed on the basis of complex spherical “Al84O210” units. The results are compared to defects observed in the crystallite fullerite C-60. |

Abstract |
Nanocrystalline diamond (NCD) thin films were produced by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and doped by the addition of phosphine to the gas mixture. The characterization of the films focused on probing the incorporation and distribution of the phosphorus (P) dopants. Electron microscopy evaluated the overall film morphology and revealed the interior structure of the nanosized grains. The homogeneous films with distinct diamond grains featured a notably low sp(2):sp(3)-ratio as confirmed by Raman spectroscopy. High resolution spectroscopy methods demonstrated a homogeneous P-incorporation, both in-depth and in-plane. The P concentration in the films was determined to be in the order of 10(19) cm(-3) with a significant fraction integrated at substitutional donor sites. (C) 2014 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH Co. Abstract |
Aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy, electron energy-loss spectroscopy, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations are used to solve several key questions about the surface structure, the particle morphology, and the distribution and nature of nitrogen impurities in detonation nanodiamond (DND) cleaned by a recently developed ozone treatment. All microscopy and spectroscopy measurements are performed at a lowered acceleration voltage (80/120kV), allowing prolonged and detailed experiments to be carried out while minimizing the risk of knock-on damage or surface graphitization of the nanodiamond. High-resolution TEM (HRTEM) demonstrates the stability of even the smallest nanodiamonds under electron illumination at low voltage and is used to image the surface structure of pristine DND. High resolution electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) measurements on the fine structure of the carbon K-edge of nanodiamond demonstrate that the typical * pre-peak in fact consists of three sub-peaks that arise from the presence of, amongst others, minimal fullerene-like reconstructions at the nanoparticle surfaces and deviations from perfect sp(3) coordination at defects in the nanodiamonds. Spatially resolved EELS experiments evidence the presence of nitrogen within the core of DND particles. The nitrogen is present throughout the whole diamond core, and can be enriched at defect regions. By comparing the fine structure of the experimental nitrogen K-edge with calculated energy-loss near-edge structure (ELNES) spectra from DFT, the embedded nitrogen is most likely related to small amounts of single substitutional and/or A-center nitrogen, combined with larger nitrogen clusters. |

Abstract |
In this work, a detailed structural and spectroscopic study of nanocrystalline diamond (NCD) thin films grown by a continuous bias assisted CVD growth technique is reported. This technique allows the tuning of grain size and phase purity in the deposited material. The crystalline properties of the films are characterized by SEM, TEM, EELS, and Raman spectroscopy. A clear improvement of the crystalline structure of the nanograined diamond film is observed for low negative bias voltages, while high bias voltages lead to thin films consisting of diamond grains of only ∼10 nm nanometer in size, showing remarkable similarities with so-called ultrananocrystalline diamond. These layers arecharacterized by an increasing amount of sp2-bonded carbon content of the matrix in which the diamond grains are embedded. Classical molecular dynamics simulations support the observed experimental data, giving insight in the underlying mechanism for the observed increase in deposition rate with bias voltage. Furthermore, a high atomic concentration of hydrogen has been determined in these films. Finally, Raman scattering analyses confirm that the Raman line observed at ∼1150 cm−1 cannot be attributed to trans-poly-acetylene, which continues to be reported in literature, reassigning it to a deformation mode of CHx bonds in NCD. |

Abstract |
In this article, we report on the synthesis of thin, epitaxial films of the transparent conductive oxide Al:ZnO on (0001)-oriented synthetic sapphire substrates by DC sputtering from targets with a nominal 1 at.% Al substitution. The deposition was carried out at an unusually low substrate temperature of only 250 °C in argonoxygen mixtures as well as in pure argon. The impact of the processgas composition on the morphology was analysed by transmission electron microscopy, revealing epitaxial growth in all the cases with a minor impact of the process parameters on the resulting grain sizes. The transport properties resistivity, Hall effect and magnetoresistance were studied in the range from 10 to 300 K in DC and pulsed magnetic fields up to 45 T. While the carrier density and mobility are widely temperature independent, we identified a low fieldlow temperature regime in which the magnetoresistance shows an anomalous, negative behaviour. At higher fields and temperatures, the magnetoresistance exhibits a more conventional, positive curvature with increasing field strength. As a possible explanation, we propose carrier scattering at localised magnetic trace impurities and magnetic correlations. |

Abstract |
While conjugated vegetable oils are currently used as additives in the drying agents of oils and paints, they are also attractive molecules for making bio-plastics. Moreover, conjugated oils will soon be accepted as nutritional additives for functional food products. While current manufacture of conjugated vegetable oils or conjugated linoleic acids (CLAs) uses a homogeneous base as isomerisation catalyst, a heterogeneous alternative is not available today. This contribution presents the direct production of CLAs over Ru supported on different zeolites, varying in topology (ZSM-5, BETA, Y), Si/Al ratio and countercation (H+, Na+, Cs+). Ru/Cs-USY, with a Si/Al ratio of 40, was identified as the most active and selective catalyst for isomerisation of methyl linoleate (cis-9,cis-12 (C18:2)) to CLA at 165 °C. Interestingly, no hydrogen pre-treatment of the catalyst or addition of hydrogen donors is required to achieve industrially relevant isomerisation productivities, namely, 0.7 g of CLA per litre of solvent per minute. Moreover, the biologically most active CLA isomers, namely, cis-9,trans-11, trans-10,cis-12 and trans-9,trans-11, were the main products, especially at low catalyst concentrations. Ex situ physicochemical characterisation with CO chemisorption, extended X-ray absorption fine structure measurements, transmission electron microscopy analysis, and temperature-programmed oxidation reveals the presence of highly dispersed RuO2 species in Ru/Cs-USY(40). |

Abstract |
Valorization of lignin is essential for the economics of future lignocellulosic biorefineries. Lignin is converted into novel polymer building blocks through four steps: catalytic hydroprocessing of softwood to form 4-alkylguaiacols, their conversion into 4-alkylcyclohexanols, followed by dehydrogenation to form cyclohexanones, and Baeyer-Villiger oxidation to give caprolactones. The formation of alkylated cyclohexanols is one of the most difficult steps in the series. A liquid-phase process in the presence of nickel on CeO2 or ZrO2 catalysts is demonstrated herein to give the highest cyclohexanol yields. The catalytic reaction with 4-alkylguaiacols follows two parallel pathways with comparable rates: 1) ring hydrogenation with the formation of the corresponding alkylated 2-methoxycyclohexanol, and 2) demethoxylation to form 4-alkylphenol. Although subsequent phenol to cyclohexanol conversion is fast, the rate is limited for the removal of the methoxy group from 2-methoxycyclohexanol. Overall, this last reaction is the rate-limiting step and requires a sufficient temperature (> 250 degrees C) to overcome the energy barrier. Substrate reactivity (with respect to the type of alkyl chain) and details of the catalyst properties (nickel loading and nickel particle size) on the reaction rates are reported in detail for the Ni/CeO2 catalyst. The best Ni/CeO2 catalyst reaches 4-alkylcyclohexanol yields over 80 %, is even able to convert real softwood-derived guaiacol mixtures and can be reused in subsequent experiments. A proof of principle of the projected cascade conversion of lignocellulose feedstock entirely into caprolactone is demonstrated by using Cu/ZrO2 for the dehydrogenation step to produce the resultant cyclohexanones (approximate to 80%) and tin-containing beta zeolite to form 4-alkyl-e-caprolactones in high yields, according to a Baeyer-Villiger-type oxidation with H2O2. |

Abstract |
The synthesis of ordered mesoporous silica-carbon composites was explored by employing TEOS and sucrose as the silica and carbon precursor respectively, and the triblock copolymer F127 as a structure-directing agent via an evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA) process. It is demonstrated that the synthesis procedures allow for control of the textural properties and final composition of these silica-carbon nanocomposites via adjustment of the effective SiO2/C weight ratio. Characterization by SAXS, N-2 physisorption, HRTEM, TGA, and C-13 and Si-29 solid-state MAS NMR show a 2D hexagonal mesostructure with uniform large pore size ranging from 5.2 to 7.6nm, comprising of separate carbon phases in a continuous silica phase. Ordered mesoporous silica and non-ordered porous carbon can be obtained by combustion of the pyrolyzed nanocomposites in air or etching with HF solution, respectively. Sulfonic acid groups can be readily introduced to such kind of silica-carbon nanocomposites by a standard sulfonation procedure with concentrated sulfuric acid. Excellent acid-catalytic activities and selectivities for the dimerization of styrene to produce 1,3-diphenyl-1-butene and dimerization of -methylstyrene to unsaturated dimers were demonstrated with the sulfonated materials. |

Abstract |
Flexible graphite foil produced by rolling expanded graphite impregnated with boron oxide was analyzed by laser mass spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and thermogravimetry. It was shown that the modification of the graphite foil by boron oxide increases the onset temperature of oxidation by ∼ 150 °C. Impregnation of less than 2 mass% boron oxide also increased the tensile strength of the materials. The observed improvement was attributed to the blocking of active sites by boron oxide, which is probably chemically bonded to the edges of graphene sheets in expanded graphite particles. |

Abstract |
Monolithic nickel/carbon (Ni/C) composites were prepared from coal tar pitch-impregnated compressed expanded graphite pre-decorated with NiO particles (EGNiO) by pyrolysis at 550 °C and subsequent steam activation at 800 °C. The microstructural arrangement of the Ni-comprising nanoparticles in the composites was investigated using transmission electron microscopy. The specific surface area and porosity of the composites were analyzed by nitrogen adsorption. The catalytic activity of the composites was compared with the material obtained by the conventional H2 treatment of EGNiO using hydrocracking of 2,2,3-trimethylpentane as a model reaction. |

Abstract |
Exfoliated graphite/coke composites modified by ZrO2 nanoparticles were produced using two different techniques and characterized by means of X-ray diffraction, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. In the first, low-density exfoliated graphite/coke blocks were dipped repeatedly and alternately in ZrO(NO3)2 and NH4OH solutions and subsequently heat treated at 1200°C in nitrogen to deposit thin layers of ZrO2 nanoparticles on the free surfaces of the carbon matrix. In the second, a mixture of expandable graphite, phenol-formaldehyde resin powder, and ZrOC2O4-modified fibrous cellulose in a sealed container was submitted to thermal shock at 900 °C followed by heat treatment at 1 200 °C in nitrogen to obtain the modified composites. The ZrO2 nanoparticles formed in the second technique were incorporated into the composites in three length scales: 6-30 nm-isolated nanoparticles and small blobs, 200-1000 nm-lengthy dendrite-like structures, and thin layer adhering to the surface of the 1-40 μm long cellulose carbon fibers. |

Abstract |
Supramolecular polymeric materials constitute a unique class of materials held together by non-covalent interactions. These dynamic supramolecular interactions can provide unique properties such as a strong decrease in viscosity upon relatively mild heating, as well as self-healing ability. In this study we demonstrate the unique mechanical properties of phase-separated electrostatic supramolecular materials based on mixing of low molar mass, oligomeric, ABA-triblock copolyacrylates with oppositely charged outer blocks. In case of well-chosen mixtures and block lengths, the charged blocks are phase separated from the uncharged matrix in a hexagonally packed nanomorphology as observed by transmission electron microscopy. Thermal and mechanical analysis of the material shows that the charged sections have a T-g closely beyond room temperature, whereas the material shows an elastic response at temperatures far above this T-g ascribed to the electrostatic supramolecular interactions. A broad set of materials having systematic variations in triblock copolymer structures was used to provide insights in the mechanical properties and and self-healing ability in correlation with the nanomorphology of the materials. |

Abstract |
Nanostructured core−shell microspheres with a rough rutile core and a thin anatase shell are synthesized via a one-step heterogeneous templated hydrolysis process of TiCl4 vapor on the aerosol water−air interface. The rutile-in-anatase core−shell structure has been evidenced by different electron microscopy techniques, including electron energy-loss spectroscopy and 3D electron tomography. A new mechanism for the formation of a crystalline rutile core inside the anatase shell is proposed based on a statistical evaluation of a large number of electron microscopy data. We found that the control over the TiCl4 vapor pressure, the ratio between TiCl4 and H2O aerosol, and the reaction conditions plays a crucial role in the formation of the core−shell morphology and increases the yield of nanostructured microspheres. |

Abstract |
A deep understanding of the fine structure at the atomic scale of halide perovskite materials has been limited by their sensitivity to the electron beam that is widely used for structural characterization. The sensitivity of a gamma-CsPbIBr2 perovskite thin film under electron beam irradiation is revealed by scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) through a universal large-range electron dose measurement, which is based on discrete single-electron events in the STEM mode. Our research indicates that the gamma-CsPbIBr2 thin film undergoes structural changes with increasing electron overall dose (e(-).A(-2)) rather than dose rate (e(-).A(-2).s(-1)), which suggests that overall dose is the key operative parameter. The electron beam-induced structural evolution of gamma-CsPbIBr2 is monitored by fine control of the electron beam dose, together with the analysis of high-resolution (S)TEM, diffraction, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Our results show that the gamma-CsPbIBr2 phase first forms an intermediate phase [e.g., CsPb(1-x)(IBr)((3-y))] with a superstructure of ordered vacancies in the pristine unit cell, while a fraction of Pb2+ is reduced to Pb-0. As the electron dose increases, Pb nanoparticles precipitate, while the remaining framework forms the Cs2IBr phase, accompanied by some amorphization. This work provides guidelines to minimize electron beam irradiation artifacts for atomic-resolution imaging on CsPbIBr2 thin films. |

Abstract |
Vertically aligned multiwalled carbon nanotubes (v-MWCNTs) are functionalized using atomic oxygen generated in a microwave plasma. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy depth profile analysis shows that the plasma treatment effectively grafts oxygen exclusively at the v-MWCNT tips. Electron microscopy shows that neither the vertical alignment nor the structure of v-MWCNTs were affected by the plasma treatment. Density functional calculations suggest assignment of XPS C 1s peaks at 286.6 and 287.5 eV, to epoxy and carbonyl functional groups, respectively. |

Abstract |
High quality epitaxial c axis oriented La2NiO4+ä thin films have been prepared by the pulsed injection metal organic chemical vapor deposition technique on different substrates. High-resolution electron microscopy/transmission electron microscopy has been used to confirm the high crystalline quality of the deposited films. The c-parameter evolution has been studied by XRD as a function of time and gas atmosphere. The high temperature transport properties along the basal a−b plane of epitaxial La2NiO4+ä films have been measured, and the total conductivity of the layers has been found to increase as the thickness is reduced. Layers of 50 nm and thinner have shown a maximum conductivity larger than that measured for single-crystals, in particular, the 33 nm thick films with a conductivity of 475 S/cm in oxygen correspond to the highest value measured to date for this material. |

Abstract |
MOF-5 nanoparticles were prepared by mixing a solution of [Zn4O(C6H5COO)(6)] with a solution of benzene-1,4-dicarboxylic acid in DMF at ambient conditions. The former species mimics as a secondary building unit (SBU), and the latter acts as linker. Mixing of the two solutions induced the formation of MOF-5 nanoparticles in dilute suspension. The applied conditions were identified as suitable for a closer investigation of the particle formation process by combined light and small angle neutron scattering (SANS). Scattering analysis revealed a significant impact of the molar ratio of the two components in the reaction mixture. Excessive use of the building unit slowed down the process. A similar effect was observed upon addition of 4n-decylbenzoic acid, which is supposed to act as a modulator. The formation mechanism leads to initial intermediates, which turn into cubelike nanoparticles with a diameter of about 60-80 nm. This initial stage is followed by an extended formation period, where nucleation proceeds over hours, leading to an increasing number of nanoparticles with the same final size of 60-80 nm. |

Abstract |
Development of efficient production methods of nanodiamond (ND) particles containing substitutional nitrogen and nitrogen-vacancy (NV) complexes remains an important goal in the nanodiamond community. ND synthesized from explosives is generally not among the preferred candidates for imaging applications owing to lack of optically active particles containing NV centers. In this paper, we have systematically studied representative classes of NDs produced by detonation shock wave conversion of different carbon precursor materials, namely, graphite and a graphite/hexogen mixture into ND, as well as ND produced from different combinations of explosives using different cooling methods (wet or dry cooling). We demonstrate that (i) the N content in nanodiamond particles can be controlled through a correct selection of the carbon precursor material (addition of graphite, explosives composition); (ii) particles larger than approximately 20 nm may contain in situ produced optically active NV centers, and (iii) in ND produced from explosives, NV centers are detected only in ND produced by wet synthesis. ND synthesized from a mixture of graphite/explosive contains the largest amount of NV centers formed during synthesis and thus deserves special attention. |

Abstract |
The nonlinear absorption of Ag atomic clusters and nanoparticles dispersed in a transparent oxyfluoride glass host has been studied. The as-prepared glass, containing 0.15 atom % Ag, shows an absorption band in the UV/violet attributed to the presence of amorphous Ag atomic nanoclusters with an average size of 1.2 nm. Upon heat treatment the Ag nanoclusters coalesce into larger nanoparticles that show a surface plasmon absorption band in the visible. Open aperture z-scan experiments using 480 nm nanosecond laser pulses demonstrated nonsaturated and saturated nonlinear absorption with large nonlinear absorption indices for the Ag nanoclusters and nanoparticles, respectively. These properties are promising, e.g., for applications in optical limiting and objects contrast enhancement. |

Abstract |
Surface plasmon modes in metallic nanostructures largely determine their optoelectronic properties. Such plasmon modes can be manipulated by changing the morphology of the nanoparticles or by bringing plasmonic nanoparticle building blocks close to each other within organized assemblies. We report the EELS mapping of such plasmon modes in pure Ag nanocubes, Au@Ag coreshell nanocubes, and arrays of Au@Ag nanocubes. We show that these arrays enable the creation of interesting plasmonic structures starting from elementary building blocks. Special attention will be dedicated to the plasmon modes in a triangular array formed by three nanocubes. Because of hybridization, a combination of such nanotriangles is shown to provide an antenna effect, resulting in strong electrical field enhancement at the narrow gap between the nanotriangles. |

Abstract |
Nanodiamond from ozone purification (NDO) demonstrates very distinctive properties within the class of detonation nanodiamonds, namely very high acidity and high colloidal stability in a broad pH range. To understand the origin of these unusual properties of NDO, the nature of the surface functional groups formed during detonation soot oxidation by ozone needs to be revealed. In this work, thermal desorption mass spectrometry (TDMS) and IR spectroscopy were used for the identification of surface groups and it was concluded that carboxylic anhydride groups prevail on the NDO surface. On the basis of the temperature profiles of the desorbed volatile products and their mass balance, it is hypothesized that decomposition of carboxylic anhydride groups from NDO during heating proceeds by two different mechanisms. Other distinctive features of NDO in comparison with air-treated nanodiamond are also reported. |

Iron oxide nanoparticles were prepared using the simplest and most efficient chemical route, the coprecipitation, in the absence and the presence of three different and widely used surfactants. The purpose of this study is to investigate the possible influence of the different surfactants on the structure and therefore on the magnetic properties of the iron oxide nanoparticles. Thus, different techniques were employed in order to elucidate the composition and structure of the magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles. By combining transmission electron microscopy with X-ray powder diffraction and X-ray absorption fine structure measurements, we were able to determine and confirm the crystal structure of the constituent iron oxides. The magnetic properties were investigated by measuring the hysteresis loops where the surfactant influence on their collective magnetic behavior and subsequent AC magnetic hyperthermia response is apparent. The results indicate that the produced iron oxide nanoparticles may be considered as good candidates for biomedical applications in hyperthermia treatments because of their high heating capacity exhibited under an alternating magnetic field, which is sufficient to provoke damage to the cancer cells. |
