Title Pd-In2O3 interaction due to reduction in hydrogen: consequences for methanol steam reforming Type A1 Journal article
Year 2010 Publication Applied catalysis : A : general Abbreviated Journal Appl Catal A-Gen

Abstract Two different Pd/In2O3 samples including a thin film model catalyst with well-defined Pd particles grown on NaCl(0 0 1) supports and a powder catalyst prepared by an impregnation technique are examined by electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and catalytic measurements in methanol steam reforming in order to correlate the formation of different oxide-supported bimetallic PdIn phases with catalytic activity and selectivity. A PdIn shell around the Pd particles is observed on the thin film catalyst after embedding the Pd particles in In2O3 at 300 K, likely because alloying to PdIn and oxidation to In2O3 are competing processes. Increased PdIn bimetallic formation is observed up to 573 K reduction temperature until at 623 K the film stability limit in hydrogen is reached. Oxidative treatments at 573 K lead to decomposition of PdIn and to the formation of an In2O3 shell covering the Pd particles, which irreversibly changes the activity and selectivity pattern to clean In2O3. PdIn and Pd2In3 phases are obtained on the powder catalyst after reduction at 573 K and 673 K, respectively. Only CO2-selective methanol steam reforming is observed in the reduction temperature range between 473 K and 573 K. After reduction at 673 K encapsulation of the bimetallic particles by crystalline In2O3 suppresses CO2 formation and only activity and selectivity of clean In2O3 are measured.

Title Catalytic characterization of pure SnO2 and GeO2 in methanol steam reforming Type A1 Journal article
Year 2010 Publication Applied catalysis : A : general Abbreviated Journal Appl Catal A-Gen

Abstract Structural changes of a variety of different SnO, SnO2 and GeO2 catalysts upon reduction in hydrogen were correlated with associated catalytic changes in methanol steam reforming. Studied systems include SnO, SnO2 and GeO2 thin film model catalysts prepared by vapour phase deposition and growth on polycrystalline NaCl surfaces and, for comparison, the corresponding pure oxide powder catalysts. Reduction of both the SnO2 thin film and powder at around 673 K in 1 bar hydrogen leads to a substantial reduction of the bulk structure and yields a mixture of SnO2 and metallic β-Sn. On the powder catalyst this transformation is fully reversible upon oxidation in 1 bar O2 at 673 K. Strongly reduced thin films, however, can only be re-transformed to SnO2 if the reduction temperature did not exceed 573 K. For GeO2, the situation is more complex due to its polymorphism. Whereas the tetragonal phase is structurally stable during reduction, oxidation or catalytic reaction, a small part of the hexagonal phase is always transformed into the tetragonal at 673 K independent of the gas phase used. SnO2 is highly active and CO2 selective in methanol steam reforming, but the initial high activity drops considerably upon reduction between 373 and 573 K and almost complete catalyst deactivation is observed after reduction at 673 K, which is associated with the parallel formation of β-Sn. In close correlation to the structural results, the catalytic activity and selectivity can be restored upon an oxidative catalyst regeneration at 673 K. Tetragonal GeO2 exhibits only a small activity and no pronounced selectivity to either CO or CO2, at least after reduction. In its fully oxidized state release of surface/lattice oxygen results in a non-catalytic formation of CO2 by oxidation of CO originating from catalytic dehydrogenation.

Abstract La1-xCaxMnO3-delta (LCMO) thin films are grown by pulsed laser deposition on a (100) SrTiO3 substrate at temperatures between 530 degrees C and 890 degrees C. The magnetotransport properties show a high negative magnetoresistance and a shift of the maximum of the R(T) curve as function of temperature. The Curie temperature changes with deposition temperature and film quality in the range of 100-220K. The film quality is characterised by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy (TEM); film and target compositions were verified by atomic emission spectroscopy. The local structure of the film depends on the growth conditions and substrate temperature. TEM reveals a slight distortion of the film leading to a breakdown of the symmetry from orthorhombic to monoclinic. At the highest growth temperatures, a well defined interface is observed within the LCMO film, parallel to the substrate surface; this interface divides the film into two lamellae with a different microstructure. The lamella close to the substrate is perfectly coherent with the substrate, suggesting that it is strained as a result of the lattice parameter mismatch; the upper lamella shows a typical domain structure with unusual translation interfaces characterised by a displacement vector of the type 1/2[010](m) and 1/2[001](m) when referred ten the monoclinic lattice.

Abstract Pd particles supported on SnO2 and GeO2 have been structurally investigated by X-ray diffraction, (High-Resolution) transmission and scanning electron microscopy after different reductive treatments to monitor the eventual formation of bimetallic phases and catalytically tested in methanol dehydrogenation/ reforming. For both oxides this included a thin film sample with well-defined Pd particles and a powder catalyst prepared by incipient wetness impregnation. The hexagonal and the tetragonal polymorph were studied for powder GeO2. Pd2Ge formation was observed on all GeO2-supported catalysts, strongly depending on the specific sample used. Reduction of the thin film at 573K resulted in full transformation into the bimetallic state. The partial solubility of hexagonal GeO2 in water and its thermal structural instability yielded Pd2Ge formation at 473 K, at the cost of a structurally inhomogeneous support and Ge metal formation at higher reduction temperatures. Pd on tetragonal GeO2 entered a state of strong metalsupport interaction after reduction at 573673 K, resulting in coalescing Pd2Ge particles on a sintered and re-crystallized support, apparently partially covering the bimetallic particles and decreasing the catalytic activity. Pd2Ge on amorphous thin film and hexagonal GeO2 converted methanol primarily via dehydrogenation to CO and H2. At 573 K, formation of Pd2Sn and also PdSn occurred on the Pd/SnO2 thin film. Pd3Sn2 (and to some extent Pd2Sn) were predominantly obtained on the respective powder catalyst. Strong deactivation with increasing reduction temperature was observed, likely not based on the classical strong metalsupport interaction effect, but rather on a combination of missing active structural ensembles on Sn-enriched bimetallic phases and the formation of metallic -Sn. Correlations to Pd and its bimetallics supported on ZnO, Ga2O3 and In2O3 were also discussed.

Abstract 'Colossal magnetoresistance' in perovskite manganites such as La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 (LCMO), is caused by the interplay of ferro-paramagnetic, metal-insulator and structural phase transitions. Moreover, different electronic phases can coexist on a very fine scale resulting in percolative electron transport. Here we report on (LCMO)(1-x):(MgO)(x) (0 < x less than or equal to 0.8) epitaxial nano-composite films in which the structure and magnetotransport properties of the manganite nanoclusters can be tuned by the tensile stress originating from the MgO second phase. With increasing x, the lattice of LCMO was found to expand, yielding a bulk tensile strain. The largest colossal magnetoresistance of 10(5)% was observed at the percolation threshold in the conductivity at x(c) approximate to 0.3, which is coupled to a structural phase transition from orthorhombic (0 < x less than or equal to 0.1) to rhombohedral R (3) over barc structure (0.33 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.8). An increase of the Curie temperature for the R (3) over barc phase was observed. These results may provide a general method for controlling the magnetotransport properties of manganite-based composite films by appropriate choice of the second phase.

Abstract A new sol-gel synthesis procedure is proposed for the preparation of MoVSbOx catalysts for the selective oxidation of isobutane. Physico-chemical characterization of the materials calcined at 400 degreesC, showed essentially amorphous catalysts, with long-range order. Increase of calcination temperature, however, resulted in the formation of small crystalline regions, confirmed through TEM. EPR measurements on the calcined samples pointed to the presence of isolated and magnetically interacting V(IV) species. The reported catalysts proved to be much more selective for partial oxidation compared to a literature reference catalyst. Furthermore, it is shown that this versatile synthesis recipe forms an excellent start for high-throughput and combinatorial studies. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Title Phase selection enabled formation of abrupt axial heterojunctions in branched oxide nanowires Type A1 Journal article
Year 2012 Publication Nano letters Abbreviated Journal Nano Lett

Keywords A1 Journal article; Electron microscopy for materials research (EMAT)
Abstract Rational synthesis of nanowires via the vaporliquidsolid (VLS) mechanism with compositional and structural controls is vitally important for fabricating functional nanodevices from bottom up. Here, we show that branched indium tin oxide nanowires can be in situ seeded in vapor transport growth using tailored AuCu alloys as catalyst. Furthermore, we demonstrate that VLS synthesis gives unprecedented freedom to navigate the ternary InSnO phase diagram, and a rare and bulk-unstable cubic phase can be selectively stabilized in nanowires. The stabilized cubic fluorite phase possesses an unusual almost equimolar concentration of In and Sn, forming a defect-free epitaxial interface with the conventional bixbyite phase of tin-doped indium oxide that is the most employed transparent conducting oxide. This rational methodology of selecting phases and making abrupt axial heterojunctions in nanowires presents advantages over the conventional synthesis routes, promising novel composition-modulated nanomaterials.

Title High-temperature phase transition in the whitlockite-type phosphate Ca9In(PO4)7 Type A1 Journal article
Year 2002 Publication Journal of solid state chemistry Abbreviated Journal J Solid State Chem
Volume 165 Issue 2 Pages (up) 278-288
Keywords A1 Journal article; Electron microscopy for materials research (EMAT)
Abstract The double phosphate Ca9In(PO4)(7) was obtained by solid-state reaction and was studied by room and high-temperature Xray powder diffraction, electron diffraction, high-resolution electron microscopy, second-harmonic generation (SHG) technique, differential scanning calorimetry, dielectric and conductivity measurements. The beta-Ca9In(PO4)(7) room-temperature phase is related to the mineral whitlockite and is similar to beta-Ca-3(PO4)(2). It has space group R (3) over barc, with unit cell parameters: a = 10.4008(1) Angstrom, c = 37.272(1) Angstrom, Z = 6. The structure was refined by the Rietveld method (R-wp = 4.69, R-I = 1.81). A reversible first-order beta <----> beta' phase transition of the ferroelectric type with T-c = 902 K is revealed by SHG, differential scanning calorimetry and dielectric measurements. The centrosymmetric beta'-Ca9In(PO4)(7) (973 K) has space group R (3) over barc, a = 10.4611(2) Angstrom, c = 37.874 (1) Angstrom (R-wp = 4.27, R-I = 4.11). Compared to the low-temperature beta-Ca9In(PO4)(7) structure, beta'-Ca9In(PO4)(7) can be described as an orientational disordering of the P1O(4) tetrahedra together with a calcium disordering on the M3 site. Title Ordering of tetrahedral chains in the Sr2MnGaO5 brownmillerite Type A1 Journal article
Year 2003 Publication Journal of solid state chemistry Abbreviated Journal J Solid State Chem
Volume 174 Issue 2 Pages (up) 319-328
Keywords A1 Journal article; Electron microscopy for materials research (EMAT)
Abstract Tetrahedral chain ordering in the Sr2MnGaO5 structure is studied using electron diffraction (ED) and high-resolution electron microscopy. The ED patterns show the presence of satellite reflections, which indicate a commensurately modulated structure with a = 5.4056(8) Angstrom b 16.171(3) Angstrom, c = 5.5592(7) Angstrom, q – 1/2c*, superspace group Immma(00gamma,)s00. The Superstructure arises due to ordering of the two types of symmetry related tetrahedral chains (L and R) according to a ... LRLR ... sequence, where L and R chains alternate along the c-axis within the same (GaO) layer. Numerous defects at different structural levels were observed, comprising interleaving L and R chains, violation of the ... LRLR ... chain sequence within one layer, different stacking modes of the ... LRLR ... ordered layers with subsequent alternation of blocks of different width along the h-axis of the brownmillerite subcell and island fragmentation of the modulated superstructure. By in situ heating ED experiments it is found that the long-range ordering of the tetrahedral chains is stable tip to 665degreesC and is completely suppressed at 905degreesC. (C) 2003 Elsevier Inc. Volume 26 Issue 5 Pages (up) 335-340
Keywords A1 Journal article; Electron microscopy for materials research (EMAT)
Abstract Monolithic nickel/carbon (Ni/C) composites were prepared from coal tar pitch-impregnated compressed expanded graphite pre-decorated with NiO particles (EGNiO) by pyrolysis at 550 °C and subsequent steam activation at 800 °C. The microstructural arrangement of the Ni-comprising nanoparticles in the composites was investigated using transmission electron microscopy. The specific surface area and porosity of the composites were analyzed by nitrogen adsorption. The catalytic activity of the composites was compared with the material obtained by the conventional H2 treatment of EGNiO using hydrocracking of 2,2,3-trimethylpentane as a model reaction.

Title Enhanced hydrogen production by photoreforming of renewable oxygenates through nanostructured Fe2O3 polymorphs Type A1 Journal article

Keywords A1 Journal article; Electron microscopy for materials research (EMAT)
Abstract Sunlight-driven hydrogen production via photoreforming of aqueous solutions containing renewable compounds is an attractive option for sustainable energy generation with reduced carbon footprint. Nevertheless, the absence of photocatalysts combining high efficiency and stability upon solar light activation has up to date strongly hindered the development of this technology. Herein, two scarcely investigated iron(III) oxide polymorphs, β- and ε-Fe2O3, possessing a remarkable activity in sunlight-activated H2 generation from aqueous solutions of renewable oxygenates (i.e., ethanol, glycerol, glucose) are reported. For β-Fe2O3 and ε-Fe2O3, H2 production rates up to 225 and 125 mmol h−1 m−2 are obtained, with significantly superior performances with respect to the commonly investigated α-Fe2O3.
