Abstract |
A Ti-50.8at.%Ni wire produced using a co-drawing method and a commercial Ti-50.8at.%Ni wire were annealed at different temperatures between 450°C and 700°C. Grains with diameter less than 100nm were revealed by transmission electron microscopy for both wires before annealing treatment. However, the microstructural heterogeneity of the co-drawn wire is more obvious than that of the commercial wire. Multi-stage martensitic transformation was observed in the co-drawn wire, compared with the one-stage A↔M transformation in the commercial wire after annealing at 600°C for 30min. The differences of total elongation, plateau strain and pseudoelastic recoverable strain between the commercial wire and the co-drawn wire were also observed. The differences of the transformation behavior and mechanical properties between the commercial wire and the co-drawn wire are attributed to the microstructural difference between these two wires. |

Abstract |
Conversion of solar energy into thermal energy helps reducing consumption of non-renewable energies. Cermets (ceramicmetal composites) are versatile materials suitable, amongst other applications, for solar selective absorbers. Although the presence of metallic Ni particles in the dielectric matrix is a prerequisite for efficient solar selective absorption in NiCrOx cermets, no clear evidence of such particles is reported so far. By combining comprehensive chemical and structural analyses, we reveal the presumed nanostructure which is at the origin of the remarkable optical properties of this cermet material. Using sputtered NiCrOx layers in a solar absorber multilayer stack on aluminium substrate allows us to achieve solar absorptance as high as α=96.1% while keeping thermal emissivity as low as ε=2.2%, both values being comparable to best values recorded so far. With the nanostructure of sputtered NiCrOx cermets eventually revealed, further optimization of solar absorbers can be anticipated and technological exploitation of cermet materials in other applications can be foreseen. |

Abstract |
The nucleation and growth mechanisms of Ni5Al3 precipitates and microtwinned plates in B2 austenite and 2M (3R) martensite phases are described on the basis of conventional and high resolution electron microscopy. In the Ni62.5Al37.5 B2 austenite matrix short annealings at 550 degrees C introduce three-pointed star shaped precipitates consisting of twin related parts of different variants of the Ni5Al3 structure. Longer annealings result in plates growing separately from these wings and developing microtwinning in order to accommodate stress built-up at the interfaces with the surrounding matrix. Annealing of Ni65Al35 2M martensite plates induces simple reordering into the Ni5Al3 phase, increasing the fct c/a ratio by about 1%. As a result stracking faults are introduced in the smallest twin variants. |

Abstract |
This contribution describes conventional and high resolution electron microscopy results on the different twinning arrangements in NisAl3 precipitates grown inside the B2 austenite phase. Short annealings introduce self-accommodating three-pointed star shaped precipitates consisting of twin related parts of different variants of the NisAl3 structure. Longer annealings result in plates growing separately from these wings and developing microtwinning in order to accommodate stress built-up at the interfaces with the surrounding matrix. |

Abstract |
Microtwin sequences in Ni66Al34 martensite plates of different size were investigated by electron microscopy. Although mostly irregular sequences were observed an average twin width w can be determined which increases with twin length L following the expected relation w ~ sqrt(L). High resolution electron microscopy was used to study the twin branching close to the plate boundaries and an atomic model for the branching of a microtwin and the changes in twin thickness is suggested |

Abstract |
First-order displacive phase transformations in alloys and compounds are of high technological importance. We have studied this class of phase transformation in the high-temperature-stable Ni-Al f32(B2) phase as a function of composition, temperature, and stress using transmission electron microscopy and neutron scattering. The results show in detail the direct relationship between the unusually low energies of the transformation-related phonon modes and the development of pre-transformation microstructures (strain-embryos, etc.) via anharmonic coupling processes that ultimately lead to the nucleation and growth of the low-temperature martensitic phases. With these results, it is now possible to develop effective models for nonclassical heterogeneous nucleation of martensite transformations in bulk materials. This tills a critical gap and sets the stage for us to proceed in developing a more global understanding of condensed matter transformations including the coupling of displacive with replacive mechanisms. |

Abstract |
Recording the electron energy loss spectroscopy data cube with a series of energy filtered images is a dose inefficient process because the energy slit blocks most of the electrons. When recording the data cube by scanning an electron probe over the sample, perfect dose efficiency is attained; but due to the low current in nanoprobes, this often is slower, with a smaller field of view. In W. Van den Broek et al. [Ultramicroscopy, 106 (2006) 269], we proposed a new method to record the data cube, which is more dose efficient than an energy filtered series. It produces a set of projections of the data cube and then tomographically reconstructs it. In this article, we demonstrate these projections in practice, we present a simple geometrical model that allows for quantification of the projection angles and we present the first successful experimental reconstruction, all on a standard post-column instrument. |

Abstract |
A sharp drop in hysteresis is observed for shape memory alloys satisfying the compatibility condition between austenite and martensite, i.e. ë2 = 1, where ë2 is the middle eigenvalue of the transformation strain matrix. The present work investigates the evolution of microstructure by transmission electron microscopy as the composition of the Ti50Ni50−xPdx system is systemically tuned to achieve the condition ë2 = 1. Changes in morphology, twinning density and twinning modes are reported along with twinless martensite and exact austenitemartensite interfaces. |

Abstract |
Automated crystal orientation and phase mapping in TEM are applied to the quantification of Ni4Ti3 precipitates in Ni–Ti shape memory alloys which will be used for the implantation of artificial sphincters operating using the all-round shape memory effect. This paper focuses on the optimization process of the technique to obtain best values for all major parameters in the acquisition of electron diffraction patterns as well as template generation. With the obtained settings, vast statistical data on nano- and microstructures essential to the operation of these shape memory devices become available. |

Abstract |
Superelastic deformation of thin NiTi wires containing various nanograined microstructures was investigated by tensile cyclic loading with in situ evaluation of electric resistivity. Defects created by the superelastic cycling in these wires were analyzed by transmission electron microscopy. The role of dislocation slip in superelastic deformation is discussed. NiTi wires having finest microstructures (grain diameter <100 nm) are highly resistant against dislocation slip, while those with fully recrystallized microstructure and grain size exceeding 200 nm are prone to dislocation slip. The density of the observed dislocation defects increases significantly with increasing grain size. The upper plateau stress of the superelastic stressstrain curves is largely grain size independent from 10 up to 1000 nm. It is hence claimed that the HallPetch relationship fails for the stress-induced martensitic transformation in this grain size range. It is proposed that dislocation slip taking place during superelastic cycling is responsible for the accumulated irreversible strains, cyclic instability and degradation of functional properties. No residual martensite phase was found in the microstructures of superelastically cycled wires by TEM and results of the in situ electric resistance measurements during straining also indirectly suggest that none or very little martensite phase remains in the studied cycled superelastic wires after unloading. The accumulation of dislocation defects, however, does not prevent the superelasticity. It only affects the shape of the stressstrain response, makes it unstable upon cycling and changes the deformation mode from localized to homogeneous. The activity of dislocation slip during superelastic deformation of NiTi increases with increasing test temperature and ultimately destroys the superelasticity as the plateau stress approaches the yield stress for slip. Deformation twins in the austenite phase ({1 1 4} compound twins) were frequently found in cycled wires having largest grain size. It is proposed that they formed in the highly deformed B19′ martensite phase during forward loading and are retained in austenite after unloading. Such twinning would represent an additional deformation mechanism of NiTi yielding residual irrecoverable strains. |

Abstract |
Ni4Ti3 precipitates play an important role in the shape memory and superelastic behaviour of thermo-mechanically treated Ni-Ti material. The 3D morphology and distribution of such precipitates with lenticular shape and rhombohedral atomic structure in the austenitic B2 matrix of a binary Ni-rich Ni-Ti alloy has been elucidated via a slice view procedure in a Dual-Beam FIB/SEM system. With the sequence of cross-section SE images obtained from the SEM, a 3D reconstruction has been achieved after proper alignment and image processing, from which both qualitative and quantitative analysis can be performed. Careful imaging is needed to ensure that all variants of the precipitates are observed with equal probability, regardless sample orientation. Moreover, due to the weak contrast of the precipitates, proper imaging conditions need to be selected to allow for semi-automated image treatment. Finally, a volume ratio of 10.2% for the Ni4Ti3 precipitates could be calculated, summed over all variants, which yields a net composition of Ni50.36Ti49.64 for the matrix, leading to an increase of 113 degrees for the martensitic start temperature Ms. Also, the expected relative orientation of the different variants of the precipitates could be confirmed. In the near future, other quantitative measures on the distribution of the precipitates can be expected. |

Abstract |
The occurrence and origin of diffuse intensity contours in electron micrographs of AgBr crystals are investigated. The observations are interpreted in terms of a model, which attributes diffuse scattering to the presence of predominant atom or vacancy clusters of a particular polyhedral type. It is shown that irrespective of the crystal morphology, interstitial Ag ions order in AgBr material in clusters of finite size along 001 type planes. A different geometry of the diffuse intensity locus observed for triangular and hexagonal tabular grains is explained in terms of the different twin plane morphology of these grains. |

Abstract |
The toughness of Al-to-steel welds decreases with increasing thickness of the intermetallic (IM) layer formed at the interface. Co plating has been added as interlayer in Al-to-steel Friction Melt Bonded (FMB) welds to control the nature and thickness of the IM layer. In comparison to a weld without interlayer, Co plating brings about a reduction of the thickness of the IM layer by 70%. The critical energy release rate of the crack propagating in the weld is used as an indicator of toughness. It is evaluated via an adapted crack propagation test using an energy conservation criterion. For a weld without interlayer, critical energy release rate is found to increase when the thickness of the intermetallic layer decreases. When the intermetallic layer is thick, the crack propagates in a brittle manner through the intermetallic whereas, at low layer thickness, the crack deviates and partially propagates through the Al plate, which causes an increase of toughness. The use of a Co interlayer brings about an increase of toughness by causing full deviation of the crack towards the Al plate. |

Abstract |
Energy filtered TEM, EFTEM, provides three-dimensional data, two spatial and one spectral dimension. We propose to acquire these data by measuring a series of images with a defocused energy filter. It will be shown that each image is a projection of the data on the detector and that reconstruction of the data out of a sufficient number of such projections using a tomographic reconstruction algorithm is possible. This technique uses only a fraction of the electron dose an energy filtered series (EFS) needs for the same spectral and spatial resolution and the same mean signal-to-noise ratio. Abstract |
The structure and texture formation in CuAlNi thin films of different thicknesses (1 μm to 5 μm) grown by DC magnetron sputtering without any intentional heating of the substrate are reported. The as-grown films present grains with an average size of 20 nm. The films with thickness of 1 μm have a single metastable phase with a hexagonal structure and are textured with planes (0002) parallel to the plane of the films. It was observed that thicker films present phase coexistence between metastable hexagonal and body centered cubic structures with a gradual increment of the body centered cubic phase fraction. The films with thickness of 5 μm are textured with planes (0002) and View the MathML source101¯0 in the hexagonal structure, whereas in the body centered cubic structure the films are textured with {110} planes parallel to the plane of the films. This fact can be associated with self-heating of the substrate during the growth of the films and with the relative stability of the metastable phases. Free standing films annealed in a second step (1123 K for 1 h) present austenitic phase with L21 structure and sub-micrometric grains textured with {220}L21 planes parallel to the plane of the films. The martensitic transformation temperature was determined from the analysis of resistance against temperature measurements. |

Abstract |
The nanoscale plasticity mechanisms activated during hydriding cycles in sputtered nanocrystalline Pd films have been investigated ex-situ using advanced transmission electron microscopy techniques. The internal stress developing within the films during hydriding has been monitored in-situ. Results showed that in Pd films hydrided to β-phase, local plasticity was mainly controlled by dislocation activity in spite of the small grain size. Changes of the grain size distribution and the crystallographic texture have not been observed. In contrast, significant microstructural changes were not observed in Pd films hydrided to α-phase. Moreover, the effect of hydrogen loading on the nature and density of dislocations has been investigated using aberration-corrected TEM. Surprisingly, a high density of shear type stacking faults has been observed after dehydriding, indicating a significant effect of hydrogen on the nucleation energy barriers of Shockley partial dislocations. Ab-initio calculations of the effect of hydrogen on the intrinsic stable and unstable stacking fault energies of palladium confirm the experimental observations. |

Abstract |
Motivated by recent studies demonstrating a high strength – high ductility potential of nano-scale metallic glass samples, the mechanical response of freestanding Zr65Ni35 film with sub-micron thickness has been investigated by combining advanced on-chip tensile testing and electron microscopy. Large deformation up to 15% is found for specimen thicknesses below 500 nm with variations depending on specimen size and frame compliance. The deformation is homogenous until fracture, with no evidence of shear banding. The yield stress is doubled when decreasing the specimen cross-section, reaching ~3 GPa for small cross-sections. The fracture strain variation is related to both the stability of the test device and to the specimen size. The study concludes on clear disconnect between the mechanisms controlling the onset of plasticity and the fracture process. |

Abstract |
Two different kinds of experimental approaches yielding three-dimensional structural information on metastable semi-coherent precipitates are demonstrated. By combining high-resolution images from two independent viewing directions a full description of the strain field surrounding a nano-sized Ni4Ti3 precipitate in Ni-Ti can be obtained. The principal axes and strains correlate well with the transformation strain of the observed R-phase transformation close to the precipitate. Using a slice-and-view procedure in a FIB/SEM dual-beam instrument, a three-dimensional voxel dataset is produced from which morphological and distributional information on the same precipitates can be obtained yielding new insight into the particular transformation paths of these alloys, relevant for their functional behaviour. |
