Abstract The electronic tunneling properties of the two stable forms of trilayer graphene (TLG), rhombohedral ABC and Bernal ABA, are examined for p-n and p-n-p junctions as realized by using a single gate (SG) or a double gate (DG). For the rhombohedral form, due to the chirality of the electrons, the Klein paradox is found at normal incidence for SG devices, while at high-energy interband scattering between additional propagation modes can occur. The electrons in Bernal ABA TLG can have a monolayer- or bilayer-like character when incident on a SG device. Using a DG, however, both propagation modes will couple by breaking the mirror symmetry of the system, which induces intermode scattering and resonances that depend on the width of the DG p-n-p junction. For ABC TLG the DG opens up a band gap which suppresses Klein tunneling. The DG induces also an unexpected asymmetry in the tunneling angle for single-valley electrons.

Abstract Different stoichiometric configurations of graphane and graphene fluoride are investigated within density-functional theory. Their structural and electronic properties are compared, and we indicate the similarities and differences among the various configurations. Large differences between graphane and graphene fluoride are found that are caused by the presence of charges on the fluorine atoms. A configuration that is more stable than the boat configuration is predicted for graphene fluoride. We also perform GW calculations for the electronic band gap of both graphene derivatives. These band gaps and also the calculated Youngs moduli are at variance with available experimental data. This might indicate that the experimental samples contain a large number of defects or are only partially covered with H or F.

Abstract The electronic properties of boron nitride nanoribbons (BNNRs) doped with a line of carbon atoms are investigated using density functional calculations. By replacing a line of alternating B and N atoms with carbons, three different configurations are possible depending on the type of the atoms which bond to the carbons. We found very different electronic properties for these configurations: (i) the NCB arrangement is strongly polarized with a large dipole moment having an unexpected direction, (ii) the BCB and NCN arrangements are nonpolar with zero dipole moment, (iii) the doping by a carbon line reduces the band gap regardless of the local arrangement of the borons and the nitrogens around the carbon line, and (iv) the polarization and energy gap of the carbon-doped BNNRs can be tuned by an electric field applied parallel to the carbon line. Similar effects were found when either an armchair or zigzag line of carbon was introduced.

Abstract We study ballistic transport of Dirac fermions in silicene through arrays of barriers, of width d, in the presence of an exchange field M and a tunable potential of height U or depth-U. The spin-and valley-resolved conductances as functions of U or M, exhibit resonances away from the Dirac point (DP) and close to it a pronounced dip that becomes a gap when a critical electric field E-z is applied. This gap widens by increasing the number of barriers and can be used to realize electric field-controlled switching of the current. The spin p(s) and valley p(v) polarizations of the current near the DP increase with Ez or M and can reach 100% for certain of their values. These field ranges widen significantly by increasing the number of barriers. Also, ps and pv oscillate nearly periodically with the separation between barriers or wells and can be inverted by reversing M.

Abstract The interaction between electrons and plasmons in trilayer graphene is investigated within the Overhauser approach resulting in the “plasmaron” quasiparticle. This interaction is cast into a field theoretical problem, and its effect on the energy spectrum is calculated using improved Wigner-Brillouin perturbation theory. The plasmaron spectrum is shifted with respect to the bare electron spectrum by ΔE(k)∼150−200meV for ABC stacked trilayer graphene and for ABA trilayer graphene by ΔE(k)∼30−150 meV[ ΔE(k) ∼1 −5meV] for the hyperbolic (linear) part of the spectrum. The shift in general increases with the electron concentration and electron momentum. The dispersion of plasmarons is more pronounced in ABC stacked than in ABA stacked trilayer graphene, because of the different energy band structure and their different plasmon dispersion.

Abstract Nitrogenated holey graphene (NHG) is a recently synthesized two-dimensional material. In this paper the structural and electronic properties of heterostructures of graphene and NHG are investigated using first-principles and tight-binding calculations. Due to the lattice mismatch between NHG and graphene, the formation of a moire pattern is preferred in the graphene/NHG heterostructure, instead of a lattice-coherent structure. In moire-patterned graphene/NHG, the band gap opening at the K point is negligible, and the linear band dispersion of graphene survives. Applying an electric field modifies the coupling strength between the two atomic layers. The Fermi velocity upsilon(F) is reduced as compared to the one of pristine graphene, and its magnitude depends on the twist angle theta between graphene and NHG: For theta = 0 degrees, upsilon(F) is 30% of that of graphene, and it increases rapidly to a value of 80% with increasing theta. The heterostructure exhibits electron-hole asymmetry in upsilon(F), which is large for small theta. In NHG encapsulated between two graphene layers, a “Dirac ring” appears around the K point. Its presence is robust with respect to the relative stacking of the two graphene layers. These findings can be useful for future applications of graphene/NHG heterostructures.

Abstract In order to study quantum effects in a two-dimensional crystal lattice of a free-standing monolayer graphene, we have performed both path-integral Monte Carlo (PIMC) and classical Monte Carlo (MC) simulations for temperatures up to 2000 K. The REBO potential is used for the interatomic interaction. The total energy, interatomic distance, root-mean-square displacement of the atom vibrations, and the free energy of the graphene layer are calculated. The obtained lattice vibrational energy per atom from the classical MC simulation is very close to the energy of a three-dimensional harmonic oscillator 3k(B)T. The PIMC simulation shows that quantum effects due to zero-point vibrations are significant for temperatures T < 1000 K. The quantum contribution to the lattice vibrational energy becomes larger than that of the classical lattice for T < 400 K. The lattice expansion due to the zero-point motion causes an increase of 0.53% in the lattice parameter. A minimum in the lattice parameter appears at T similar or equal to 500 K. Quantum effects on the atomic vibration amplitude of the graphene lattice and its free energy are investigated.

Abstract The lowest-energy configurations of Cn(n≤55) clusters are obtained using the energy-minimization technique with the conjugate gradient method where a modified Brenner potential is invoked to describe the carbon and hydrocarbon interaction. We found that the ground-state configuration consists of a single ring for small number of C atoms and multiring structures are found with increasing n, which can be in planar, bowl-like or caplike form. Contrary to previous predictions, the binding energy Eb does not show even-odd oscillations and only small jumps are found in the Eb(n) curve as a consequence of specific types of edges or equivalently the number of secondary atoms. We found that hydrogenation of the edge atoms may change the ground-state configuration of the nanocluster. In both cases we determined the magic clusters. Special attention is paid to trigonal and hexagonal shaped carbon clusters and to clusters having a graphenelike configuration. Trigonal clusters are never the ground state while hexagonal-shaped clusters are only the ground state when they have zigzag edges.

Abstract The dynamics of fullerene-cubane (C60⋅C8H8) cocrystal is studied combining experimental [x-ray diffuse scattering, quasielastic and inelastic neutron scattering (INS)] and simulation (molecular dynamics) investigations. Neutron scattering gives direct evidence of the free rotation of fullerenes and of the libration of cubanes in the high-temperature phase, validating the rotor-stator description of this molecular system. X-ray diffuse scattering shows that orientational disorder survives the order/disorder transition in the low-temperature phase, although the loss of fullerene isotropic rotational diffusion is featured by the appearance of a 2.2 meV mode in the INS spectra. The coupling between INS and simulations allows identifying a degeneracy lift of the cubane librations in the low temperature phase, which is used as a tool for probing the environment of cubane in this phase and for getting further insights into the phase transition mechanism.

Abstract We study the energy and temperature relaxation of electrons in graphene on a piezoelectric substrate. Scattering from the combined potential of extrinsic piezoelectric surface acoustical (PA) phonons of the substrate and intrinsic deformation acoustical phonons of graphene is considered for a (non) degenerate gas of Dirac fermions. It is shown that in the regime of low energies or temperatures the PA phonons dominate the relaxation and change qualitatively its character. This prediction is relevant for quantum metrology and electronic applications using graphene devices and suggests an experimental setup for probing electron-phonon coupling in graphene.

Abstract We derive an exact solution to the problem of spin snake states induced in a nonhomogeneous magnetic field by a combined action of the Rashba spin-orbit and Zeeman fields. The electron spin behavior as a function of the cyclotron orbit center position and an external homogeneous magnetic field was obtained. It is shown that in an antisymmetric magnetic field the electron spin in the snake states has only an in-plane projection, perpendicular to the magnetic interface, which vanishes at large positive momenta. Applying an external homogeneous magnetic field adds a finite out-of-plane spin component and simultaneously gaps out the spectral branches, which results in regular beating patterns of the spin current components.

Abstract The charge density relaxation propagator of a two-dimensional electron system, which is the slope of the imaginary part of the polarization function, exhibits singularities for bosonic momenta having the order of the spin-orbit momentum and depending on the momentum orientation. We have provided an intuitive understanding for this nonanalytic behavior in terms of the interchirality subband electronic transitions, induced by the combined action of Bychkov-Rashba (BR) and Dresselhaus (D) spin-orbit coupling. It is shown that the regular behavior of the relaxation propagator is recovered in the presence of only one BR or D spin-orbit field or for spin-orbit interaction with equal BR and D coupling strengths. This creates a new possibility to influence carrier relaxation properties by means of an applied electric field.

Abstract In this paper several nanodevices which realize basic single heavy-hole qubit operations are proposed and supported by time-dependent self-consistent Poisson-Schrodinger calculations using a four band heavy-hole-light-hole model. In particular we propose a set of nanodevices which can act as Pauli X, Y, Z quantum gates and as a gate that acts similar to a Hadamard gate (i.e., it creates a balanced superposition of basis states but with an additional phase factor) on the heavy-hole spin qubit. We also present the design and simulation of a gated semiconductor nanodevice which can realize an arbitrary sequence of all these proposed single quantum logic gates. The proposed devices exploit the self-focusing effect of the hole wave function which allows for guiding the hole along a given path in the form of a stable solitonlike wave packet. Thanks to the presence of the Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling, the motion of the hole along a certain direction is equivalent to the application of an effective magnetic field which induces in turn a coherent rotation of the heavy-hole spin. The hole motion and consequently the quantum logic operation is initialized only by weak static voltages applied to the electrodes which cover the nanodevice. The proposed gates allow for an all electric and ultrafast (tens of picoseconds) heavy-hole spin manipulation and give the possibility to implement a scalable architecture of heavy-hole spin qubits for quantum computation applications.

Abstract We performed a detailed investigation of the oxidation of the technologically relevant GaAs(001)-beta 2(2x4) surface via density functional calculations. The purpose is to gain insights on the atomistic mechanisms and local bondings that underlie the degradation of the surface properties once exposed to oxygen. The study comprises the adsorption of single O atoms, through the sampling of several adsorption sites, and the subsequent formation of the O adsorbate at increasing coverage by taking into account multiple-atom adsorption. Based on the evaluation of the energetics and the structural properties of the atomistic models generated, the results here reported delineate a consistent picture of the initial stage of the surface oxidation: (i) at low coverage, in the limit of single O insertions, oxygen is incorporated on the surface forming a twofold-bridging Ga-O-As bond; (ii) at increasing coverage, as multiple O atoms are involved, this is accompanied by the formation of a threefold-coordinated bond (with two Ga and one As atoms); (iii) the latter has important implications regarding the electronic properties of the adsorbate since this O bonding may result in the formation of As dangling bonds. Moreover, a clear trend of increased energy gain for the incorporation of neighboring O atoms compared to single O insertions indicates that the formation of oxide clusters is favored over a regime of uniform oxidation. Our findings provide a detailed description of the O bonding and stress the importance of modeling the adsorption of multiple O atoms for an accurate description of the surface oxidation.

Abstract A data-acquisition and data-processing method is proposed that aims at minimizing the effect of retardation on the Kramers-Kronig analysis of valence electron energy-loss spectra. This method is applied to diamond, which, due to its high dielectric constant, is a material that shows strong retardation effects and thus is a challenging material to be studied by valence electron energy-loss spectroscopy. The results obtained show a significant improvement but still show small discrepancies with respect to optical data, which are most likely due to the residual retardation contributions and the fact that nonzero momentum transfers are measured.

Abstract We utilize an exact variational numerical procedure to calculate the ground state properties of a polaron in the presence of a Rashba-like spin-orbit interaction. Our results corroborate previous work performed with the momentum average approximation and with weak-coupling perturbation theory. We find that spin-orbit coupling increases the effective mass in the regime with weak electron-phonon coupling, and decreases the effective mass in the regimes of intermediate and strong electron-phonon coupling. Analytical strong-coupling perturbation theory results confirm our numerical results in the small-polaron regime. A large amount of spin-orbit coupling can lead to a significant lowering of the polaron effective mass.

Abstract We study the influence of the inelastic relaxation time τ̃E of the quasiparticle distribution function f(E) on the phase slip process in quasi-one-dimensional superconducting rings at a temperature close to the critical temperature Tc. We find that the initial time of growth of the order parameter |Δ| in the phase slip core after the phase slip is a nonmonotonic function of τ̃E which has a maximum at τ̃E≃τ̃GL=πℏ/8kB(Tc−T) and has a tendency to saturate for large τ̃E⪢τ̃GL. The effective heating of the electron subsystem due to the increase in |Δ| in the phase slip center together with the above effect result in a nonmonotonic dependence of the number of subsequent phase slips on τ̃E in rings of relatively large radius (in which each phase slip reduces the current density to a small fraction of its initial value). During the phase slip process the order parameter distribution has two peaks near the phase slip core due to the diffusion of the nonequilibrium quasiparticles from that region.
