Title Modelling three-dimensional nanoparticle transformations based on quantitative transmission electron microscopy Type Doctoral thesis
  Year 2022 Publication Abbreviated Journal
  Volume Issue Pages 169 p.
Keywords Doctoral thesis; Electron microscopy for materials research (EMAT)
Abstract Nanomaterials are materials that have at least one dimension in the nanometer length scale, which corresponds to a billionth of a meter. When three dimensions are confined to the nanometer scale, these materials are referred to as nanoparticles. These materials are of great interest since they exhibit unique physical and chemical properties that cannot be observed for bulk systems. Due to their unique and often superior properties, nanomaterials have become central in the field of electronics, catalysis, and medicine. Moreover, they are expected to be one of the most promising systems to tackle many challenges that our society is facing, such as reducing the emission of greenhouse gases and finding effective treatments for cancer. The unique properties of nanomaterials are linked to their size, shape, structure, and composition. If one is able to measure the positions of the atoms, their chemical nature, and the bonding between them, it becomes possible to predict the physicochemical properties of nanomaterials. In this manner, the development of novel nanostructures can be triggered. However, the morphology and structure of nanomaterials are highly sensitive to the conditions for relevant applications, such as elevated temperatures or intense light illumination. Furthermore, any small change in the local structure at higher temperatures or pressures may significantly modify their performance. Hence, three-dimensional (3D) characterization of nanomaterials under application-relevant conditions is important in designing them with desired functional properties for specific applications. Among different structural characterization approaches, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is one of the most efficient and versatile tools to investigate the structure and composition of nanomaterials since it can provide atomically resolved images, which are sensitive to the local 3D structure of the investigated sample. However, TEM only provides two-dimensional (2D) images of the 3D nanoparticle, which may lead to an incomplete understanding of their structure-property relationship. The most known and powerful technique for the 3D characterization of nanomaterials is electron tomography, where the images of a nanostructured material taken from different directions are mathematically combined to retrieve its 3D structure. Although these experiments are already state-of-the-art, 3D characterization by TEM is typically performed under ultra-high vacuum conditions and at room temperature. Such conditions are unfortunately not sufficient to understand transformations during synthesis or applications of nanomaterials. This limitation can be overcome by in situ TEM where external stimuli, such as heat, gas, and liquids, can be controllably introduced inside the TEM using specialized holders. However, there are some technical limitations to successful perform 3D in situ electron tomography experiments. For example, the long acquisition time required to collect a tilt series limits this technique when one wants to observe 3D dynamic changes with atomic resolution. A solution for this problem is the estimation of the 3D structure of nanomaterials from 2D projection images acquired along a single viewing direction. For this purpose, annular dark field scanning TEM (ADF STEM) imaging mode provides a valuable tool for quantitative structural investigation of nanomaterials from single 2D images due to its thickness and mass sensitivity. For quantitative analysis, an ADF STEM image is considered as a 2D array of pixels where relative variation of pixel intensity values is proportional to the total number of atoms and the atomic number of the elements in the sample. By applying advanced statistical approaches to these images, structural information, such as the number or types of atoms, can be retrieved with high accuracy and precision. The outcome can then be used to build a 3D starting model for energy minimization by atomistic simulations, for example, molecular dynamics simulations or the Monte Carlo method. However, this methodology needs to be further evaluated for in situ experiments. This thesis is devoted to presenting robust approaches to accurately define the 3D atomic structure of nanoparticles under application-relevant conditions and understand the mechanism behind the atomic-scale dynamics in nanoparticles in response to environmental stimuli.

  Year 2009 Publication Abbreviated Journal
  Volume Issue Pages 1-14
Keywords H1 Book chapter; Condensed Matter Theory (CMT); Electron microscopy for materials research (EMAT)
Abstract Electron continement and its effect on the superconducting-to-normal phase transition driven by a magentic field and/or a current is studied in nanowires. Our investigation is based on a self-consistent numerical solution of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. We find that in a parallel magneitc field and/or in the presence of a supercurrent the transition from the superconducting to the normal phase occurs as a cascade of discontinuous jumps in the superconducting order parameter for diameters D < 10 divided by 15 nm at T = 0. The critical magentic field exhibits quantum-size oscillations with pronounced resonant enhancements as a function of the wire radius.

Abstract In the past years, and also within the framework of this CRP, we have used a combination of several nuclear and non-nuclear techniques in fundamental research and especially in various applications. Most work has been done with energy-dispersive X ray fluorescence in combination with electron probe X ray microanalysis, but several other more common analysis techniques have been used as well. The applications have included mostly preventive conservation (e.g. characterisation of damaging atmospheric particles in many museums) and environmental monitoring (e.g. for atmospheric particles in relation to their health effects in outdoor and especially indoor environments). Fundamental aspects have been in the optimising of interfaced electron microprobe and Raman microprobe analysis and the evaluation of the potential of such an instrument for atmospheric aerosols; quite a few unexpected and unpredicted problems have appeared in the latter study.

Abstract There is a type of filament that forms dosed contours encircling regions of one polarity of magnetic field, while the surrounding region has the opposite polarity One distribution of ring-filaments has sizes 2R = 40,000 to 160,000 km with the maximum around 100,000 km; the other distribution (with filaments and filament channels) has bigger sizes, with a maximum around 300,000 km. At low and mid latitudes the radial component B-rs (radial for the Sun) in the region outlined by filaments varies from 50 to 100 gauss, while the longitudinal component B-phi varies from 10 to 30 gauss. The total current inside the filament is 10(10) – 10(11) A, the ratio R/a approximate to 5 to 10, the magnetic flux crossing the surface is approximate to 10(21) – 10(22) MX; th, magnetic energy is approximate to 10(29) – 10(31) erg. Polar ring-filaments at latitudes 60 degrees-80 degrees are related to the polar magnetic field reversal and the quasi-flare processes at the poles during the field reversal. Correlation between B-rs and B-phi for the polar filament bands cannot be satisfactorily explained. A theoretical model using the conservation laws is used to study the relations between the various fields, currents, etc, of shrinking polar ring-filaments and their evolution. According to this theory ring-filaments should rise higher above the photosphere when shrinking. However, observations show that the height lowers. Presumably the discrepancy is due to the lack of dissipation in the model.

Abstract The gravitational energy associated with variations in the radius of the Sun is huge: with a relative change of 1/2000 (the estimated difference between maximum and minimum solar activity) and taking only the convection zone to expand, corresponds to about 2 10(34)J, which is 1/10 of the total rotational energy of the Sun. Non-radial oscillations with a tiny nonlinearity can still yield energies comparable to or larger than the total magnetic energy of a full sunspot cycle or three or four orders more than the luminosity of the Sun, but that is not sufficient to account for the changes of the temperature on Earth. The expansion of the upper layers of the convection zone, however, may directly or indirectly affect the climate and the biological aspects on the Earth. Moreover this suits a qualitative explanation why the Sun expands during a minimum of the magnetic activity.

Abstract Ibis work illustrates the development of X-ray fluorescence tomography and polycapillary based confocal imaging towards a three-dimensional (313), quantitative analytical method with lateral resolution levels down to the 2-20 mum scale. Detailed analytical characterization is given for polycapillary based confocal XRF imaging, which is a new variant of the 3D micro-XRF technique. Applications for 2D/3D micro-XR-F are illustrated for the analysis of biological (zooplankton) and geological samples (microscopic inclusions in natural diamonds and fluid inclusions in quartz). Based on confocal imaging, fully three-dimensional distributions of trace elements could be obtained, representing a significant generalization of the regular 2D scanning technique for micro-XRF spectroscopy. The experimental work described in this paper has been carried out at the ESRF ID18F microfluorescence end-station and at HASYLAB Beam Line L.

Abstract Responses of mesoscopic superconducting rings and disks to perpendicular magnetic fields are studied by using the multiple-small-tunnel-junction method, in which transport properties of several small tunnel junctions attached to the sample are measured simultaneously. This allows us for a direct experimental observation of the paramagnetic supercurrent, which is closely related to the paramagnetic Meissner effect. The results are compared with numerical results based on the nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau theory.

Title Superconducting nanowires : new type of BCS-BEC crossover driven by quantum-size effects Type P1 Proceeding
  Year 2011 Publication Abbreviated Journal
  Volume Issue Pages 119-127
Keywords P1 Proceeding; Condensed Matter Theory (CMT)
Abstract We show that a superconducting quantum nanowire undergoes a new type of BCS-BEC crossover each time when an electron subband approaches the Fermi surface. In this case the longitudinal Cooper-pair size drops by two-three orders of magnitude down to a few nanometers. This unconventional BCS-BEC crossover is driven by quantum-size effects rather than by tuning the fermion-fermion interaction.

Title In situ study of the parameters quantifying the corrosion in ballast tanks and an evaluation of improving alternative Type P3 Proceeding
  Year 2011 Publication Abbreviated Journal
  Volume Issue Pages
Keywords P3 Proceeding; Engineering sciences. Technology; Sustainable Energy, Air and Water Technology (DuEL)
Abstract An in situ study of more than 100 ballast tanks of merchant marine vessels looks to the corrosion process in these tanks from another perspective. The developed corrosion model shows major similarities with earlier studies based on laboratory experiments. The field work exposes the influence of ship construction parameters such as land of construction, coating type and the presence of sacrificial anodes on the corrosion process in the ballast tanks. Possible alternatives for vessels constructed with ordinary grade A steel and coated according to IMO PSPC standards are presented, even though further research is required to come to final conclusions.
