Title Direct structural and spectroscopic investigation of ultrathin films of tetragonal CuO: Six-fold coordinated copper Type A1 Journal article
Year 2014 Publication Europhysics letters Abbreviated Journal Epl-Europhys Lett
  Volume 105 Issue 1 Pages 17003-17005
Keywords A1 Journal article; Electron microscopy for materials research (EMAT)
Abstract Unlike other 3d transition metal monoxides (MnO, FeO, CoO, and NiO), CuO is found in a low-symmetry distorted monoclinic structure rather than the rocksalt structure. We report here of the growth of ultrathin CuO films on SrTiO3 substrates; scanning transmission electron microscopy was used to show the stabilization of a tetragonal rocksalt structure with an elongated c-axis such that c/a similar to 1.34 and the Cu-O-Cu bond angle similar to 180 degrees, pointing to metastable six-fold coordinated Cu. X-ray absorption spectroscopy demonstrates that the hole at the Cu site for the CuO is localized in 3d(x2-y2) orbital unlike the well-studied monoclinic CuO phase. The experimental confirmation of the tetragonal structure of CuO opens up new avenues to explore electronic and magnetic properties of six-fold coordinated Cu. Copyright (C) EPLA, 2014

Title Nanofilms as quantum-engineered multiband superconductors : the Ginzburg-Landau theory Type A1 Journal article
Year 2013 Publication Europhysics letters Abbreviated Journal Epl-Europhys Lett
  Volume 102 Issue 2 Pages 27003-27006
Keywords A1 Journal article; Condensed Matter Theory (CMT)
Abstract Recently fabricated single-crystalline atomically flat metallic nanofilms are in fact quantum-engineered multiband superconductors. Here the multiband structure is dictated by the nanofilm thickness through the size quantization of the electron motion perpendicular to the nanofilm. This opens the unique possibility to explore superconductivity in well-controlled multi-band systems. However, a serious obstacle is the absence of a convenient and manageable theoretical tool to access new physical phenomena in such quasi-two-dimensional systems, including interplay of quantum confinement and fluctuations. Here we cover this gap and construct the appropriate multiband Ginzburg-Landau functional for nano-thin superconductors. Copyright (C) EPLA, 2013

Title Spin effects in electron vortex states Type A1 Journal article
Year 2013 Publication Europhysics letters Abbreviated Journal Epl-Europhys Lett
  Volume 102 Issue 4 Pages 40010-40016
Keywords A1 Journal article; Electron microscopy for materials research (EMAT); Condensed Matter Theory (CMT)
Abstract The recent experimental realization of electron vortex beams opens up a wide research domain previously unexplored. The present paper explores the relativistic properties of these electron vortex beams, and quantifies deviations from the scalar wave theory. It is common in electron optics to use the Schrodinger equation neglecting spin. The present paper investigates the role of spin and the total angular momentum J(z) and how it pertains to the vortex states. As an application, we also investigate if it is possible to use holographic reconstruction to create novel total angular momentum eigenstates in a transmission electron microscope. It is demonstrated that relativistic spin coupling effects disappear in the paraxial limit, and spin effects in holographically created electron vortex beams can only be exploited by using specialized magnetic apertures.

Abstract Charge carriers in single and multilayered graphene systems behave as chiral particles due to the particular lattice symmetry of the crystal. We show that the interplay between the meta-material properties of graphene multilayers and the pseudospinorial properties of the charge carriers result in the occurrence of Klein and anti-Klein tunneling for rhombohedral stacked multilayers. We derive an algebraic formula predicting the angles at which these phenomena occur and support this with numerical calculations for systems up to four layers. We present a decomposition of an arbitrarily stacked multilayer into pseudospin doublets that have the same properties as rhombohedral systems with a lower number of layers.   Title On the nature of ferromagnetism in diluted magnetic semiconductors : GaAs:Mn Type A1 Journal article
Year 2003 Publication Europhysics letters Abbreviated Journal Epl-Europhys Lett
  Volume 61 Issue 2 Pages 235-241
Keywords A1 Journal article; Condensed Matter Theory (CMT)
Abstract An energy level diagram is constructed on the basis of a microscopic Hamiltonian proposed for a description of interacting manganese impurities in diluted magnetic semiconductors (DMS). It is shown that ferromagnetism in p-type III-V DMS is governed by the strong hybridization of Mn2+-electrons with the mobile holes and localized states near the top of the valence band. The Curie temperature estimated from the proposed kinematic exchange agrees with the experiments on GaAs:Mn. The model is also applicable to the GaP:Mn system.

Title Re-entrant pinning of Wigner molecules in a magnetic field due to a Coulomb impurity Type A1 Journal article
Year 2004 Publication Europhysics letters Abbreviated Journal Epl-Europhys Lett
  Volume 66 Issue 5 Pages 701-707
Keywords A1 Journal article; Condensed Matter Theory (CMT)
Abstract Pinning of magnetic-field-induced Wigner molecules (WMs) confined in parabolic two-dimensional quantum dots by a charged defect is studied by an exact diagonalization approach. We found a re-entrant pinning of the WMs as a function of the magnetic field, a magnetic-field-induced re-orientation of the WMs and a qualitatively different pinning behaviour in the presence of a positive and negative Coulomb impurity.

Title On the asymmetric next-nearest-neighbor ising model of oxygen ordering in YBa2Cu3Oz Type A1 Journal article
Year 1992 Publication Europhysics letters Abbreviated Journal Epl-Europhys Lett

Abstract Basic results concerning oxygen ordering in the superconducting compound YBa2Cu3Oz are briefly summarized. It is shown that, at equilibrium, only infinite-chain structures can be stabilized and those models based on hypothetical (and actually nonphysical) screened Coulomb interactions cannot produce stable ground states. It is suggested that diffraction data (neutrons, X-rays, electrons) from oxygen-lean samples are indicative of metastable displacive transformations, and are not directly related to oxygen ordering.

Title Quantum mechanics of spin transfer in coupled electron-spin chains Type A1 Journal article
Year 2007 Publication Epl Abbreviated Journal Epl-Europhys Lett
  Volume 79 Issue 6 Pages 67004
  Keywords A1 Journal article
Abstract The manner in which spin-polarized electrons interact with a magnetized thin film is currently described by a semi-classical approach. This in turn provides our present understanding of the spin transfer, or spin torque phenomenon. However, spin is an intrinsically quantum-mechanical quantity. Here, we make the first strides towards a fully quantum-mechanical description of spin transfer through spin currents interacting with a Heisenberg-coupled spin chain. Because of quantum entanglement, this requires a formalism based on the density matrix approach. Our description illustrates how individual spins in the chain time-evolve as a result of spin transfer.

Title Holstein polaron: The effect of coupling to multiple-phonon modes Type A1 Journal article
Year 2007 Publication Epl Abbreviated Journal Epl-Europhys Lett
  Volume 80 Issue 6 Pages 67001
  Keywords A1 Journal article
Abstract We investigate the effects of coupling to multiple-phonon modes on the properties of a Holstein polaron. To this end, we generalize the Momentum Average approximations MA((0)) and MA((1)) to deal with multiple-phonon modes. As for a single-phonon mode, these approximations are found to be numerically very efficient. They become exact for very weak or very strong couplings, and are highly accurate in the intermediate regimes, e.g. the spectral weights obey exactly the first six, respectively eight, sum rules. Our results show that the effect on ground-state properties is cumulative in nature. As a result, if the effective coupling to one mode is much larger than to all the others, this mode effectively determines the ground-state properties. However, even very weak coupling to a second phonon mode has important non-perturbational effects on the higher-energy spectrum, in particular on the dispersion and the phonon statistics of the polaron band. This has important consequences on the analysis and interpretation of data for real materials.
