Abstract The quartic force field of thioformaldehyde has been calculated ab initio using large basis sets and augmented coupled cluster methods. Calculated fundamentals are in excellent agreement with experiment, as is the most important Coriolis coupling constant. Computed values for the anharmonicity, rovibrational coupling, and centrifugal distortion constants of the four isotopomers (H2CS)-S-32, (H2CS)-S-34, (HDCS)-S-32, and (D2CS)-S-32 have been reported. Predictions have been made for all vibrational transitions from the ground state to excited states with at most two quanta for these isotopomers, both using second-order perturbation theory corrected for Darling-Dennison resonance and using vibrational SCF-CI calculations. For (D2CS)-S-32, perturbation theory performs quite well; for the other isotopomers, performance is poorer for states involving excitation of the out-of-plane bend and, for the (H2CS)-S-32 and (H2CS)-S-34 isotopomers, also for the antisymmetric bend that is in severe Coriolis resonance with it. A possible explanation has been suggested. (C) 1994 Academic Press, Inc.

Abstract Electrical transport properties of the two-dimensional electron gas are studied in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field B = Bz and of a weak one-dimensional electric (V0 cos (Kx)) or magnetic (B0 = B0 cos (Kx)z) modulation where B0 << B, K = 2-pi/a, and a is the modulation period. In either case the discrete Landau levels broaden into bands whose width: (1) is proportional to the modulation strength, (2) it oscillates with B, and (3) it gives rise to magnetoresistance oscillations, at low B, that are different in period and temperature dependence from the Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) ones, at higher B. For equal energy modulation strengths, V0 = heB0/m*, the magnetic bandwidth at the Fermi energy is about one order of magnitude larger than the electric one. The same holds for the oscillation amplitude of the electrical magnetoresistivity tensor. For two-dimensional modulations the energy spectrum has the same structure but with different scales. For weak magnetic fields and equal modulation strengths the gaps in the spectrum can be much larger in the magnetic case thus making easier the observability of the spectrum's fine structure.

Abstract LaAMnSnO(6) (A = Sr, Ba) have been synthesized by high temperature solid-state reactions under dynamic 1% H(2)/Ar flow. Rietveld refinements on room temperature powder X-ray diffraction data indicate that LaSrMnSnO(6) crystallizes in the GdFeO(3)-structure, with space group Pnma and, combined with transmission electron microscopy, LaBaMnSnO(6) in Imma. Both space groups are common in disordered double-perovskites. The Mn(3+) and Sn(4+) ions whose valence states were confirmed by X-ray absorption spectroscopy, are completely disordered over the B-sites and the BO(6) octahedra are slightly distorted. LaAMnSnO(6) are ferromagnetic semiconductors with a T(C) = 83 K for the Sr- and 66 K for the Ba-compound. The title compounds, together with the previously reported LaCaMnSnO(6) provide an interesting example of progression from Pnma to Imma as the tolerance factor increases. An analysis of the relationship between space group and tolerance factor for the series LaAMnMO(6) (A = Ca, Sr, Ba; M = Sn, Ru) provides a better understanding of the symmetry determination for double perovskites.

Abstract The time evolution of a wave packet in strained graphene is studied within the tight-binding model and continuum model. The effect of an external magnetic field, as well as a strain-induced pseudomagnetic field, on the wave-packet trajectories and zitterbewegung are analyzed. Combining the effects of strain with those of an external magnetic field produces an effective magnetic field which is large in one of the Dirac cones, but can be practically zero in the other. We construct an efficient valley filter, where for a propagating incoming wave packet consisting of momenta around the K and K' Dirac points, the outgoing wave packet exhibits momenta in only one of these Dirac points while the components of the packet that belong to the other Dirac point are reflected due to the Lorentz force. We also found that the zitterbewegung is permanent in time in the presence of either external or strain-induced magnetic fields, but when both the external and strain-induced magnetic fields are present, the zitterbewegung is transient in one of the Dirac cones, whereas in the other cone the wave packet exhibits permanent spatial oscillations.

Abstract The density of states (DOS) and the optical conductivity of graphene is calculated in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field and where scattering on charged and short-range impurities is included. The standard Kubo formula is employed where the self-energy induced by impurity scattering and the Green's function are calculated self-consistently including inter-Landau level (LL) coupling and screening effects. It is found that the scattering from those two types of impurities results in a symmetric LL broadening and asymmetric inter-LL coupling renormalizes the LL positions to lower energy. The peak position and intensity of the magneto-optical conductivity depends on the filling factor and the broadened DOS. Good agreement is found with recent cyclotron resonance measurements.

Abstract The structure and surface morphology of aluminum and silver mirrors covered with protective dielectric oxide layer were studied by means of TEM and SEM. The presence of needle-like pores throughout the thickness of the ZrO(2) film and bubble-like pores in Al(2)O(3) was observed. The test for resistivity to deuterium ion bombardment shows that the exposition to a fluence of similar to 2 x 10(20) ions/cm(2) with the ion energy of 40-50 eV results in appearance of blisters on the surface of mirrors covered wit h Al(2)O(3). For the mirrors protected with ZrO(2) no noticeable changes in surface morphology and reflectivity were found even after order of magnitude higher ion fluence. The effect of different porous structures on blistering phenomena is discussed. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract The electronic structure of the conduction and valence bands of a quantum ring containing a layer inside the ring opening is modeled This structure (nanocup) consists of a GaAs nanodisk (the cup s bottom) and a GaAs nanoring (the cup s rim) which encircles the disk The whole system is embedded in an (Al Ga)As matrix and its shape resembles realistic ring structures grown by the droplet epitaxy technique The conduction-band states in the structure are modeled by the single-band effective-mass theory while the 4-band Luttinger-Kohn model is adopted to compute the valence-band states We analyze how the electronic structure of the nanocup evolves from the one of a quantum ring when the size of either the nanodisk or the nanoring is changed For that purpose (1) the width of the ring (2) the disk radius and (3) the disk height are separately varied For dimensions typical for experimentally realized structures we find that the electron wavefunctions are mainly localized inside the ring even when the thickness of the Inner layer is 90% of the ring thickness These calculations indicate that topological phenomena like the excitonic Aharonov-Bohm effect are negligibly affected by the presence of the layer inside the ring (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd All rights reserved

Abstract We show that in presence of an applied external field the two-component order parameter superconductor falls in two categories of ground states, namely, in the traditional Abrikosov ground state or in a new ground state fitted to describe a superconducting layer with texture, that is, patched regions separated by a phase difference of pi. The existence of these two kinds of ground states follows from the sole assumption that the total supercurrent is the sum of the two individual supercurrents and is independent of any consideration about the free energy expansion. Uniquely defined relations between the current density and the superfluid density hold for these two ground states, which also determine the magnetization in terms of average values of the order parameters. Because these ground-state conditions are also Bogomolny equations we construct the free energy for the two-component superconductor which admits the Bogomolny solution at a special coupling value.   Abstract Fe(2)C plays a crucial role in the precipitation of iron carbides. Jack's structural models for epsilon-Fe(2)C, and non-stoichiometric epsilon-Fe(2.4)C, are analyzed using first-principles calculations. Several new configurations of epsilon-Fe(2)C with even higher stability are found. We show how epsilon-Fe(2)C transforms into eta-Fe(2)C, and address the structural relationships with the chi-Fe(5)C(2), theta-Fe(3)C and Fe(7)C(3) phases. The relative occurrence of these phases in steel, as well as their probable evolution during tempering of quenched steels, is discussed. (C) 2010 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd.   Abstract The evolution of the structure, magnetic ordering, and superconductivity in the series Ba(1-x)Na(x)Fe(2)As(2) is reported up to the limiting Na-rich composition with x = 0.6; the more Na-rich compositions are unstable at high temperatures with respect to competing phases. The magnetic and superconducting behaviors of the Bai,Na,Fe,As, members are similar to those of the betterinvestigated Ba(1-x)Na(x)Fe(2)As(2) analogues. This is evidently a consequence of the quantitatively similar evolution of the structure of the FeAs layers in the two series. In Ba(1-x)Na(x)Fe(2)As(2) antiferromagnetic order and an associated structural distortion are evident for x <= 0.35 and superconductivity is evident when x exceeds 0.2. For 0.4 <= x <= 0.6 bulk superconductivity is evident, and the long-range antiferromagnetically ordered state is completely suppressed. The maximum T(c) in the Ba(1-x)Na(x)Fe(2)As(2) series, as judged by the onset of diamagnetism, is 34K in Ba(0.6)Na(0.4)Fe(2)As(2). Despite the large mis-match in sizes between the two electropositive cations which separate the FeAs layers, there is no evidence for ordering of these cations on the length scale probed by electron diffraction.

Abstract The Ni(1+)/Ni(2+) states of nickelates have the identical (3d(9)/3d(8)) electronic configuration as Cu(2+)/Cu(3+) in the high temperature superconducting cuprates, and are expected to show interesting properties. An intriguing question is whether mimicking the electronic and structural features of cuprates would also result in superconductivity in nickelates. Here we report experimental evidence for a bulklike magnetic transition in La(4)Ni(3)O(8) at 105 K. Density functional theory calculations relate the transition to a spin density wave nesting instability of the Fermi surface.

Abstract We investigate theoretically quantum transport through graphene nanorings in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field. Our theoretical results demonstrate that the graphene nanorings behave like a resonant tunneling device, contrary to the Aharonov-Bohm oscillations found in conventional semiconductor rings. The resonant tunneling can be tuned by the Fermi energy, the size of the central part of the graphene nanorings and the external magnetic field.

Abstract Quantization of the transverse electron motion in high-quality superconducting metallic nanowires and nanofilms results in the formation of well-distinguished single-electron subbands. They shift in energy with changing thickness, which is known to cause quantum-size superconducting oscillations. The formation of multiple subbands results in a multigap structure induced by the interplay between quantum confinement and Andreev mechanism. We investigate multisubband superconductivity in a hollow nanocylinder by numerically solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. When changing the inner radius and thickness of the hollow nanocylinder, we find a crossover from an irregular pattern of quantum-size superconducting oscillations, typical of nanowires, to an almost regular regime, specific for superconducting nanofilms. At this crossover the multigap structure becomes degenerate. The ratio of the critical temperature to the energy gap increases and approaches its bulk value while being reduced by 20-30% due to Andreev-type states driven by quantum confinement in the irregular regime.

Abstract We study the effect of electron confinement on the superconducting-to-normal phase transition driven by a magnetic field and/or on the current-carrying state of the superconducting condensate in nanowires. Our investigation is based on a self-consistent numerical solution of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. We show that in a parallel magnetic field and/or in the presence of supercurrent the transition from superconducting to normal phase occurs as a cascade of discontinuous jumps in the superconducting order parameter for diameters D < 10 divided by 15 nm at T = 0. The critical magnetic field exhibits quantum-size oscillations with pronounced resonant enhancements.

Abstract The dynamics of strongly confined laser driven semiconductor quantum dots coupled to phonons is studied theoretically by calculating the time evolution of the reduced density matrix using the path integral method. We explore the cases of long pulses, strong dot-phonon and dot-laser coupling and high temperatures, which up to now have been inaccessible. We find that the decay rate of the Rabi oscillations is a non-monotonic function of the laser field leading to the decay and reappearance of the Rabi oscillations in the field dependence of the dot exciton population.

Abstract The peculiarities of sputtering processes at 0.5-5 keV Ne grazing ion bombardment of Si(001) and SiC(001) surfaces and their possible application for the surface modification have been studied by computer simulation. Sputtering yields in the primary knock-on recoil atoms regime versus the initial energy of incident ions (E(0) = 0.5-5 keV) and angle of incidence (psi = 0-30 degrees) counted from a target surface have been calculated. Comparative studies of layer-by-layer sputtering for Si(001) and SiC(001) surfaces versus the initial energy of incident ions as well as an effective sputtering and sputtering threshold are discussed.

Abstract Multiwall carbon nanotubes are produced by decomposition of acetylene at 600 degreesC on metal catalysts supported on NaY zeolite. The support and the metal are eliminated by dissolving them in aqueous hydrofluoric acid (HF). Two methods were used to eliminate the pyrolitic carbon: oxidation in air at 500 degreesC and oxidation by potassium permanganate in acidic solution at 70 degreesC. The progress and efficacy of the purification methods are verified by TEM. The properties of the purified multiwalled carbon nanotubes are probed using C-13 and Xe-129 NMR spectroscopy under continuous-flow optical-pumping conditions. Xenon is shown to penetrate the interior of the nanotubes. A distribution of inner tube diameters gives rise to chemical shift dispersion. When the temperature is lowered, an increasing fraction of xenon resides inside the nanotubes and is not capable of exchanging with xenon in the interparticle space. In the case of the permanganate-oxidized sample, rapid xenon relaxation is attributed to interaction with residual MnO2 nanoparticles in the interior of the tubes.

Abstract Not much about the effect of thiocyanate addition on the sulphur ripening is known, although it is used for many applications in photographic practice. Via a combination of tracer analysis and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy the effect of thiocyanate addition on the sulphur and sulphur-plus-gold ripening could be unveiled. When thiocyanate is added prior to the sulphur addition, it appears to rearrange the silver halide surface in such way that the sulphur deposition rate is enhanced, but the supply of interstitials is limited. Addition of thiocyanate after the sulphur reaction results in the formation of thiocyanate complexes with silver, from which a silver ion is more easily deposited in a surface cell of the silver sulphide clusters thus enhancing the sensitization rate. For sulphur-plus-gold sensitized emulsions it was observed that part of the gold ions could be removed out of the Ag2-xAuxS clusters by addition of thiocyanate ions and subsequent washing. Hence, it was concluded that two different types of gold ions are present in the silver sulphide clusters; 1. gold ions which are substitutional for silver (bound between sulphur and bromide ions) 2. gold ions which bridge two or three sulphur atoms. Incorporation of gold ions into silver sulphide clusters suppresses their optical absorption in diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. Since the optical absorption at 505 nm can completely be restored by addition of thiocyanate, it is assumed that the entity absorbing at this wavelength is a monomer of silver sulphide.

Abstract We report on magnetisation of individual superconducting particles with size down to 0.1 micron. The non-invasive access to properties of such small objects has become possible using submicron Hall probes which detect a local magnetic field and work effectively as micro-fluxmeters similar to, e.g., SQUIDs but with an effective detection loop of only about a square micron. We have found that the spatial confinement of superconductivity in a small volume gives rise to dramatic changes in thermodynamic properties of mesoscopic superconductors.   Abstract The variation of structures and superconducting properties by changing extra oxygen or fluorine atoms concentration in Hg-based Cu mixed oxides and YBa2Cu3O6+delta was studied. The data obtained by NPD study of Hg-1201 can be considered as an evidence of the conventional oxygen doping mechanism with 2 delta holes per (CuO2) layer. The extra oxygen atom was found to be located in the middle of the Hg mesh only. Different formal charges of oxygen and fluorine inserted into reduced 123 structure results in its distinct variations. The fluorine incorporation into strongly reduced YBa2Cu3O6+delta causes a significant structural rearrangement and the formation of a new compound with a composition close to YBa2Cu3O6F2 (tetragonal alpha = 3.87 Angstrom and c approximate to 13 Angstrom), which structure was deduced from the combined results of X-ray diffraction, electron diffraction and high resolution electron microscopy. Fluorination treatment by XeF2 of nonsuperconducting 123 samples causes an appearance of bulk superconductivity with T-c up to 94K.

Abstract We studied the morphology of ramps in REBa2CU3O7 (REBCO) epitaxial films on SrTiO3 substrates, fabricated by RF magnetron sputter deposition and pulsed laser deposition (PLD), by scanning probe microscopy (SPM) and high resolution electron microscopy (HREM). The ramps were fabricated by Ar ion beam etching using masks of standard photoresist and TIN. AFM-studies on ramps in sputter deposited films show a strong dependence, i.e. formation of facets and ridges, on the angle of incidence of the ion beam with respect to the substrate surface as well as the rotation angle with respect to the crystal axes of the substrate. Ramps in pulsed laser deposited films did not show this dependence, Furthermore, we studied the effect of an anneal step prior to the deposition of barrier layers (i.e. PrBa2CU3O7, SrTiO3, CeO2) on the ramp. First results show a recrystallization of the ramp surface, resulting in terraces and a non-homogeneous growth of the barrier material on top of it. The thickness variations, for thin layers of barrier material, con even become much larger than expected from the amount of deposited material and are dependent on the deposition and anneal conditions. HREM studies show a well defined interface between barrier layer and electrodes. The angle of the ramp depends on the etch rate of the mask and REBCO, and on the angle of incidence of the ion beam. TiN has a much lower etch rate compared to photoresist, resulting in an angle of the ramp comparable to the angle of incidence, resulting in a low etching rate on the ramp. These results will lead to improved electrical characteristics of ramp-type junctions.

Abstract 6H SiC single crystals were implanted al room temperature with 1 MeV He+ up to a fluence of 2 x 10(17) at./cm(2) RBS-channeling analysis with a 2 MeV He+ beam indicated the formation of extended defects or the generation of point defects at a constant concentration over a depth of about 1 mu m. Electron microscopy characterisation revealed the presence of two amorphous buried layers at depths of about 1,75 and 4.8 mu m. They an due to the implantation and to the analysing RES beam, respectively, No extended planar or linear faults were found in the region between the surface and the first amorphous layer. However, at the surface, a 50 nm thick amorphous layer was observed in which crystalline inclusions were embedded. Electron diffraction and HREM data of the inclusions were typical for diamond, These inclusions were even found in the crystalline SiC material below this layer, however at a reduced density.

Abstract We have studied tunnelling through Si donors incorporated in the quantum well of double barrier resonant tunnelling devices. In addition to a resonance associated with the ground state of a single donor (1s level), a novel donor-related resonance at a smaller binding energy is observed in high magnetic fields where it becomes dominant over the Is resonance. We attribute this novel feature to a D-minus state of a shallow donor.

Abstract Cyclotron resonance (CR) of the electrons accumulated at sheets with heavy Si doping in InSb were observed using far infrared radiation. The angular dependence of the CR follows closely the 1/cos theta behaviour with some small deviations at high angles attributed to coupling between subbands. From the effective mass of the lowest subband, which is found to be 0.027m(o), the bottom of the lowest subband was determined to lie 125 meV below the Fermi level.
