“Formation and stability of conformal spirals in confined 2D crystals”. Silva FCO, Menezes RM, Cabral LRE, de Souza Silva CC, Journal Of Physics-Condensed Matter 32, 505401 (2020). http://doi.org/10.1088/1361-648X/ABB0A7
Abstract: We investigate the ground-state and dynamical properties of nonuniform two-dimensional (2D) clusters of long-range interacting particles. We demonstrate that, when the confining external potential is designed to produce an approximate 1/ r 2 density profile, the particles crystallize into highly ordered structures featuring spiral crystalline lines. Despite the strong inhomogeneity of the observed configurations, most of them are characterized by small density of topological defects, typical of conformal crystals, and the net topological charge induced by the simply-connected geometry of the system is concentrated near the cluster center. These crystals are shown to be robust with respect to thermal fluctuations up to a certain threshold temperature, above which the net charge is progressively redistributed from the center to the rest of the system and the topological order is lost. The crystals are also resilient to the shear stress produced by a small nonuniform azimuthal force field, rotating as a rigid body (RB). For larger forces, topological defects proliferate and the RB rotation gives place to plastic flow.

“Self-assembled vortex crystals induced by inhomogeneous magnetic textures”. Menezes RM, Sardella E, Cabral LRE, de Souza Silva CC, Journal of physics : condensed matter 31, 175402 (2019). http://doi.org/10.1088/1361-648X/AB035A
Abstract: We investigate the self-assembly of vortices in a type-II superconducting disk subjected to highly nonuniform confining potentials produced by inhomogeneous magnetic textures. Using a series of numerical experiments performed within the Ginzburg–Landau theory, we show that vortices can arrange spontaneously in highly nonuniform, defect-free crystals, reminiscent of conformal lattices, even though the strict conditions for the conformal crystal are not fulfilled. These results contradict continuum-limit theory, which predicts that the order of a nonuniform crystal is unavoidably frustrated by the presence of topological defects. By testing different cooling routes of the superconductor, we observed several different self-assembled configurations, each of which corresponding to one in a set of allowed conformal transformations, which depends on the magnetic and thermal histories of the system.

“Dynamic phases of vortex-antivortex molecules in a Corbino disk with magnetic dipole on top”. de Aquino BRCHT, Cabral LRE, de Souza Silva CC, Albino Aguiar J, Milošević, MV, Peeters FM, Physica: C : superconductivity 479, 115 (2012). http://doi.org/10.1016/j.physc.2012.12.016
Abstract: We performed a molecular dynamics study of vortex-antivortex motion in a superconducting disk with a magnetic dot on top, in the Corbino disk geometry. In this system, vortices and antivortices are forced to move in opposite azimuthal directions by a radially applied current. The dot is magnetized out of plane in order to stabilize composite vortex-antivortex configurations, with vortices closer to the center of the disk and antivortices near to the disk edge. We observe that the interplay between the spatially inhomogeneous current distribution, the screening currents induced by the dipole, and the attractive vortex-antivortex (v-av) interaction result in different dynamical phases. At low current values, antivortices which are distributed at outer rings – remain bounded to vortices at inner rings and the whole configuration rotates rigidly. Above a threshold current, vortices and antivortices unbind and move at different angular velocities in a highly correlated way. Finally, at very strong drive, vortex-antivortex attraction is overhelmed by the external current Lorentz force, causing them to move in opposite directions. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. “Surface barrier for flux entry and exit in mesoscopic superconducting systems”. Berdiyorov GR, Cabral LRE, Peeters FM, Journal of mathematical physics 46, 095105 (2005). http://doi.org/10.1063/1.2010351
Abstract: The energy barrier which has to be overcome for a single vortex to enter or exit the sample is studied for thin superconducting disks, rings, and squares using the nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau theory. The shape and the height of the nucleation barrier is investigated for different sample radii and thicknesses and for different values of the Ginzburg-Landau parameter kappa. It is shown that the London theory considerably overestimates (underestimates) the energy barrier for vortex expulsion (penetration). (c) 2005 American Institute of Physics.

“Two-shell vortex and antivortex dynamics in a Corbino superconducting disk”. Cabral LRE, de Aquino BRCHT, de Souza Silva CC, Milošević, MV, Peeters FM, Physical review : B : condensed matter and materials physics 93, 014515 (2016). http://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.93.014515
Abstract: We examine theoretically the dynamics of two vortex shells in pinning-free superconducting thin disks in the Corbino geometry. In the first considered case, the inner shell is composed of vortices and the outer one of antivortices, corresponding to a state induced by the stray field of an off-plane magnetic dipole placed on top of the superconductor. In the second considered case, both shells comprise vortices induced by a homogeneous external field. We derive the equation of motion for each shell within the Bardeen-Stephen model and study the dynamics analytically by assuming both shells are rigid and commensurate. In both cases, two distinct regimes for vortex shell motion are identified: For low applied currents the entire configuration rotates rigidly, while above a threshold current the shells decouple from each other and rotate at different angular velocities. Analytical expressions for the decoupling current, the recombination time in the decoupled phases, as well as the voltage-current characteristics are presented. Our analytical results are in excellent agreement with numerical molecular dynamics simulations of the full many-vortex problem.
