Abstract | A 2d3v particle-in-cell/Monte Carlo collisions model was applied to study the influence of the magnetic field strength on the cathode sheath region of a direct current (dc) magnetron discharge. When applying a magnetic field of 520-730 G, the cathode sheath width decreases with magnetic field strength, whereas, if a stronger magnetic field is applied (i. e. from 730 to 2600 G), the sheath width increases. This is explained by studying the structure of the sheath in different magnetic field strengths in terms of the electron and ion densities. The consequences of sheath structure on the sputter deposition process are also investigated. It is found that the magnetic field strength can control the erosion profile and the sputter rate.

Abstract | The physical processes in an Ar/O2 magnetron discharge used for the reactive sputter deposition of TiOx thin films were simulated with a 2d3v particle-in-cell/Monte Carlo collisions (PIC/MCC) model. The plasma species taken into account are electrons, Ar+ ions, fast Arf atoms, metastable Arm* atoms, Ti+ ions, Ti atoms, O+ ions, O2+ ions, O− ions and O atoms. This model accounts for plasmatarget interactions, such as secondary electron emission and target sputtering, and the effects of target poisoning. Furthermore, the deposition process is described by an analytical surface model. The influence of the O2/Ar gas ratio on the plasma potential and on the species densities and fluxes is investigated. Among others, it is shown that a higher O2 pressure causes the region of positive plasma potential and the O− density to be more spread, and the latter to decrease. On the other hand, the deposition rates of Ti and O are not much affected by the O2/Ar proportion. Indeed, the predicted stoichiometry of the deposited TiOx film approaches x=2 for nearly all the investigated O2/Ar proportions.

Abstract | In order to increase the understanding of the underlying processes in organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN), a study has been undertaken aimed at clarifying the solvent flux behaviour of ceramic nanofiltration and ultrafiltration membranes. Ceramic membranes were chosen for their non-swelling character. Pure water and a variation of 11 different organic solvents were measured on a series of different ceramic membranes with pore-size diameters ranging from 0.9 nm up to 100 nm. To avoid any historical effects, each flux measurement was carried out on a new membrane. The flux results were analysed in a phenomenological way, and a common very simple linear relationship was observed between the product of flux and viscosity of the solvent, and the total Hansen solubility parameter of the solvent. The linear relationship was found for all membranes, independent of the membrane pore size and the membrane material. The slope of the linear relationship was found to depend exponentially on the pore-size diameter and on the polarity of the membrane surface. This result emphasizes the importance of viscosity in the solvent transport, but also of the polarity difference between membrane surface and solvent. The very simple flux model deduced, allows a straightforward prediction of the flux of any solvent or solvent mixture, once the water flux of the membrane is known. At the high pore-size end, the phenomenological model naturally transforms into the viscous-flow or pore-flow behaviour as required. A tentative physical explanation of the model takes into account the presence and extension of a water layer adsorbed to the total pore surface of these membranes. This work also shows that the water flux of a hydrophilic membrane gives a good indication of its molecular weight cut-off (MWCO), and therefore of its separation performance in water. Abstract | Magnetron sputtering is a widely used physical vapor deposition technique for deposition and formation of nanocatalyst thin films and clusters. Nevertheless, so far only few studies investigated this formation process at the fundamental level. We here review atomic scale molecular dynamics simulations aimed at elucidating the nanocatalyst growth process through magnetron sputtering. We first introduce the basic magnetron sputtering background and machinery of molecular dynamics simulations, and then describe the studies conducted in this field so far. We also present a perspective view on how the field may be developed further.

Abstract | Molecular dynamics simulations are carried out for describing growth of Pd and PdO nanoclusters using the ReaxFF force field. The resulting nanocluster structures are successfully compared to those of nanoclusters experimentally grown in a gas aggregation source. The PdO structure is quasi-crystalline as revealed by high resolution transmission microscope analysis for experimental PdO nanoclusters. The role of the nanocluster temperature in the molecular dynamics simulated growth is highlighted.

Abstract | The reproducible temporal separation of ion signals generated from a single multi-element droplet, observed in previous studies, was investigated in detail in this work using an ICPTOFMS with high temporal resolution. It was shown that the signal peak intensities of individual elements temporally shift relative to each other only for droplets moving through the plasma off-axis. The magnitude of these shifts correlated with the vaporization temperatures of the analytes and depended on the radial position of the droplets as well as on the thermal properties and velocity profiles of the carrier gases of the ICP. The occurrence of the signal shifting was explained by a spatial separation of analytes already present in the vapor phase in the ICP from a yet unvaporized residue of the droplet. This separation is most likely driven by anisotropic diffusion of vaporized analytes towards the plasma axis and a radial velocity gradient. The proposed explanation is supported by modeling of the gas velocities inside the ICP and imaging of the atomic and ionic emissions produced from single droplets, whose patterns were sloping towards the center of the torch. The effects observed in these studies are important not only for the fundamental understanding of analyteplasma interactions but have also a direct impact on the signal intensities and stability.

Abstract | Plasma catalysis is promising for various environmental, energy and chemical synthesis applications, but the underlying mechanisms are far from understood. Modeling can help to obtain a better insight in these mechanisms. Some burning questions relate to the plasma behavior inside packed bed reactors and whether plasma can penetrate into catalyst pores. In this paper, we try to provide answers to these questions, by means of both fluid modeling and particle-in-cell/Monte Carlo collision simulations. We present a short overview of recent findings obtained in our group by means of modeling, i.e., the enhanced electric field near the contact points and the streamer propagation through the packing in packed bed reactors, as well as the plasma behavior in catalyst pores, to determine the minimum pore size in which plasma streamers can penetrate.

Abstract | In this review paper, we present several examples of reactive molecular dynamics simulations, which contribute to a better understanding of the underlying mechanisms in plasma medicine on the atomic scale. This includes the interaction of important reactive oxygen plasma species with the outer cell wall of both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, and with lipids present in human skin. Moreover, as most biomolecules are surrounded by a liquid biofilm, the behavior of these plasma species in a liquid (water) layer is presented as well. Finally, a perspective for future atomic scale modeling studies is given, in the field of plasma medicine in general, and for cancer treatment in particular.

Abstract | Plasma is gaining increasing interest for cancer treatment, but the underlying mechanisms are not yet fully understood. Using computer simulations at the molecular level, we try to gain better insight in how plasma-generated reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) can penetrate through the cell membrane. Specifically, we compare the permeability of various (hydrophilic and hydrophobic) RONS across both oxidized and nonoxidized cell membranes. We also study pore formation, and how it is hampered by higher concentrations of cholesterol in the cell membrane, and we illustrate the much higher permeability of H2O2 through aquaporin channels. Both mechanisms may explain the selective cytotoxic effect of plasma towards cancer cells. Finally, we also discuss the synergistic effect of plasma-induced oxidation and electric fields towards pore formation. Abstract | Plasma-based CO2 conversion is gaining increasing interest worldwide. A large research effort is devoted to improving the energy efficiency. For this purpose, it is very important to understand the underlying mechanisms of the CO2 conversion. The latter can be obtained by computer modeling, describing in detail the behavior of the various plasma species and all relevant chemical processes. However, the accuracy of the modeling results critically depends on the accuracy of the assumed input data, like cross sections. This is especially true for the cross section of electron impact dissociation, as the latter process is believed to proceed through electron impact excitation, but it is not clear from the literature which excitation channels effectively lead to dissociation. Therefore, the present paper discusses the effect of different electron impact dissociation cross sections reported in the literature on the calculated CO2 conversion, for a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) and a microwave (MW) plasma. Comparison is made to experimental data for the DBD case, to elucidate which cross section might be the most realistic. This comparison reveals that the cross sections proposed by Itikawa and by Polak and Slovetsky both seem to underestimate the CO2 conversion. The cross sections recommended by Phelps with thresholds of 7 eV and 10.5 eV yield a CO2 conversion only slightly lower than the experimental data, but the sum of both cross sections overestimates the values, indicating that these cross sections represent dissociation, but most probably also include other (pure excitation) channels. Our calculations indicate that the choice of the electron impact dissociation cross section is crucial for the DBD, where this process is the dominant mechanism for CO2 conversion. In the MW plasma, it is only significant at pressures up to 100 mbar, while it is of minor importance for higher pressures, when dissociation proceeds mainly through collisions of CO2 with heavy particles. |

Abstract | Plasma catalysis is gaining increasing interest for various gas conversion applications, such as CO2 conversion into value-added chemicals and fuels, CH4 activation into hydrogen, higher hydrocarbons or oxygenates, and NH3 synthesis. Other applications are already more established, such as for air pollution control, e.g. volatile organic compound remediation, particulate matter and NOx removal. In addition, plasma is also very promising for catalyst synthesis and treatment. Plasma catalysis clearly has benefits over ‘conventional’ catalysis, as outlined in the Introduction. However, a better insight into the underlying physical and chemical processes is crucial. This can be obtained by experiments applying diagnostics, studying both the chemical processes at the catalyst surface and the physicochemical mechanisms of plasma-catalyst interactions, as well as by computer modeling. The key challenge is to design cost-effective, highly active and stable catalysts tailored to the plasma environment. Therefore, insight from thermal catalysis as well as electro- and photocatalysis is crucial. All these aspects are covered in this Roadmap paper, written by specialists in their field, presenting the state-of-the-art, the current and future challenges, as well as the advances in science and technology needed to meet these challenges.

Abstract | This chapter discusses modeling efforts for plasma-based CO2 conversion, which are needed to obtain better insight in the underlying mechanisms, in order to improve this application. We will discuss two types of (complementary) modeling efforts that are most relevant, that is, (i) modeling of the detailed plasma chemistry by zero-dimensional (0D) chemical kinetic models and (ii) modeling of reactor design, by 2D or 3D fluid dynamics models. By showing some characteristic calculation results of both models, for CO2 splitting and in combination with a H-source, and for packed bed DBD and gliding arc plasma, we can illustrate the type of information they can provide.

Abstract | In recent years there is increased interest in plasma-based CO2 conversion. Several plasma setups are being investigated for this purpose, but the most commonly used ones are a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD), a microwave (MW) plasma and a gliding arc (GA) reactor. In this proceedings paper, we will show results from our experiments in a (packed bed) DBD reactor and in a vortex-flow GA reactor, as well as from our model calculations for the detailed plasma chemistry in a DBD, MW and GA, for pure CO2 as well as mixtures of CO2 with N-2, CH4 and H2O.
