Abstract |
Highly thermally conductive graphite flakes (Gf)/Si/Al composites have been fabricated using Gf, Si powder and an AlSi7Mg0.3 alloy by an optimized pressure infiltration process for thermal management applications. In the composites, the layers of Gf were spaced apart by Si particles and oriented perpendicular to the pressing direction, which offered the opportunity to tailor the thermal conductivity (TC) and coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of the composites. Microstructural characterization revealed that the formation of a clean and tightly-adhered interface at the nanoscale between the side surface of the Gf and Al matrix, devoid of a detrimental Al4C3 phase and a reacted amorphous AlSiOC layer, contributed to excellent thermal performance along the alignment direction. With increasing volume fraction of Gf from 13.7 to 71.1 vol.%, the longitudinal (i.e. parallel to the graphite layers) TC of the composites increased from 179 to 526 W/m K, while the longitudinal CTE decreased from 12.1 to 7.3 ppm/K (matching the values of electronic components). Furthermore, the modified layers-in-parallel model better fitted the longitudinal TC data than the layers-in-parallel model and confirmed that the clean and tightly-adhered interface is favorable for the enhanced longitudinal TC. |

Abstract |
The effects of high dose ion irradiation in β CuZnAl were investigated between room temperature and 150 °C. Single crystal samples with surface normal close to [001]β were irradiated with 300 keV Cu+ ions. Microstructural changes were characterized using transmission electron microscopy. Irradiation induced cavities located on the surface exposed to the irradiation were observed. The morphology, size and density distribution of these cavities were analyzed as a function of different irradiation conditions. The shape and location of the cavities with respect to the irradiation surface were not affected by irradiation temperature or irradiation dose. Instead, the cavity size distribution showed a bi-modal shape for a dose of 15 dpa, regardless of irradiation temperature. For a dose of 30 dpa the bi-modal distribution was only observed after room temperature irradiation. The diffusion effects of vacancies produced by irradiation are analyzed in shape memory CuZnAl alloys, which main characteristic is the diffusionless martensitic transformation. Particularly, the cavity size distributions were analyzed in terms of nucleation, growth and coalescence. |

Abstract |
The precipitation of a disordered FCC surface structure after low angle Ga+ ion irradiation during focused ion beam thinning of a B2 Cu-Zn-Al alloy with e/a=1.48 is reported. Conventional as well as high-resolution transmission electron microscopy techniques reveal FCC layers on both sides of the thinned sample. The occurrence of this structure is attributed to disordering and dezincification of the alloy resulting from the sputtering process during the irradiation. Changes in crystallographic sample orientation with respect to the incoming ion beam do not have a significant effect on the appearance of the FCC surface structure. |

Abstract |
The irradiation effects of thinning a sample of a Cu-Zn-Al shape memory alloy to electron transparency by a Ga+ focused ion beam were investigated. This thinning method was compared with conventional electropolishing and Ar+ ion milling. No implanted Ga was detected but surface FCC precipitation was found as a result of the focused ion beam sample preparation. Decreasing the irradiation dose by lowering the energy and current of the Ga+ ions did not lead to a complete disappearance of the FCC structure. The latter could only be removed after gentle Ar+ ion milling of the sample. It was further concluded that the precipitation of the FCC is independent of the crystallographic orientation of the surface. |

Abstract |
A new application which focuses on an artificial sphincter fabricated by Ni-Ti SMAs for human implantation is under investigation by applying the all-round shape memory effect with precise control of the phase transformation temperatures. In this study, a Ni51at.%-Ti alloy was fabricated by arc melting with fast solidification, followed by a proper strained aging which induces the two way shape memory effect needed for this particular application. Differential scanning calorimetry was used to investigate the thermal behavior and transmission electron microscopy was used for studying the microstructure of the alloys. With the latter the novel technique of automated crystal orientation microscopy is used and optimized to obtain phase and orientation mapping of the various structures. |

Abstract |
Porous Ni50.8Ti49.2 bulk material was prepared by powder metallurgy sintering. Solid solution and aging treatments were applied to improve the phase homogeneity and phase transformation behavior. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy, aided by energy dispersive X-ray analysis, were used to study the microstructure and chemical phase content of the alloys. In-situ cooling was carried out to observe the phase transformation behavior. As-received material contains dispersed Ni2Ti4O particles while Ni4Ti3 precipitates appear after aging. Close to pore edges, the latter have a preferential orientation due to the induced stress fields in the matrix. |

Abstract |
Automated crystal orientation and phase mapping in TEM are applied to the quantification of Ni4Ti3 precipitates in Ni–Ti shape memory alloys which will be used for the implantation of artificial sphincters operating using the all-round shape memory effect. This paper focuses on the optimization process of the technique to obtain best values for all major parameters in the acquisition of electron diffraction patterns as well as template generation. With the obtained settings, vast statistical data on nano- and microstructures essential to the operation of these shape memory devices become available. |

Abstract |
Carbonaceous spherules of millimeter size diameter and found in the upper soils throughout Europe are investigated by TEM, including SAED, HRTEM and EELS, and Raman spectroscopy. The spherules consist primarily of carbon and have an open cell-like internal structure. Most of the carbon appears in an amorphous state, but different morphologies of nano- and microdiamond particles have also been discovered including flake shapes. The latter observation, together with the original findings of some of these spherules in crater-like structures in the landscape and including severely deformed rocks with some spherules being embedded in the fused crust of excavated rocks, points towards unique conditions of origin for these spherules and particles, possibly of exogenic origin. Abstract |
Ultrafine faulty C14-MgZn2 Laves phase precipitates containing quasicrystalline clusters and demonstrating the formation of binary quasicrystalline precipitates with Penrose-like random-tiling were observed in the over-aged FCC matrix of a commercial 7N01 Al-Zn-Mg alloy, using high angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy. The evolution from C14-Laves phase to quasicrystalline clusters is illustrated, and five-fold symmetry can be found in both real and reciprocal spaces. Our findings reveal the possibility of quasicrystalline formation from Laves phase in a highly plastic metal matrix like Al and demonstrate the structural relationship between Laves phase and quasicrystals. |

Abstract |
Submicron-sized quasicrystalline particles were obtained in an Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy produced by traditional melting. These particles consist of an Al-Fe-Ni core and a Mg-Cu-Zn shell and were found to be stable and embedded randomly in the Al matrix. The diffraction patterns of these core-shell particles reveal a decagonal core and an icosahedral shell with, respectively, ten- and five-fold axes aligned. High resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy of the Mg-Cu-Zn shell confirms the five-fold symmetry atomic arrangement and the icosahedral structure. It can therefore be concluded that Fe and Ni impurities play an important role in mediating the formation of such an unusual ternary core-shell quasicrystalline particle. These findings provide some novel insights in the formation of quasicrystals in traditional industrial Al alloys. |

Abstract |
The interaction between dislocations and nano-precipitates during deformation directly influences hardening response of precipitation-strengthening metals such as Al-Mg-Si alloys. However, how coherent and semi-coherent nano-precipitates accommodate external deformation applied to an Al alloy remains to be elucidated. In-situ tensile experiments in a transmission electron microscope (TEM) were conducted to study the dynamic process of dislocations cutting through coherent needle-like beta '' precipitates with diameters of 3 similar to 8 nm. Comprehensive investigations using in-situ, ex-situ TEM and atom probe tomography uncovered that beta '' precipitates were firstly sheared into small fragments, and then the rotation of the fragments, via sliding along precipitate/matrix interfaces, destroyed their initially coherent interface with the Al matrix. In contrast, semi-coherent beta' precipitates with sizes similar to beta '' were more difficult to be fragmented and accumulation of dislocations at the interface increased interface misfit between beta' and the Al matrix. Consequently, beta' precipitates could basically maintain their needle-like shape after the tensile deformation. This research gains new insights into the interaction between nano-precipitates and dislocations. (C) 2021 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. |

Abstract |
It is generally believed that β00 precipitates, rather than β0 precipitates, are the major strengthening precipitates in
aged Al–Mg–Si alloys. The reason for this difference is not well understood. To clarify this, two samples of the
same Al–Mg–Si alloy but with different aging states were prepared. The under-aged sample only contains nanoprecipitates
of the β00 type, while the peak-aged one contains nearly equal volumes of β00 and β0 precipitates. We
have, for the first time, separated the strengthening effect of the contribution from βʺ and βʹ precipitates,
respectively, by an indirect approach based on high-precision measurements of volume fractions, number densities,
sizes, proportions of the precipitates, their lattice strains, the composition and grain size of the matrix. The
β0 precipitates, which take 45.6% of the total precipitate volume in the peak-aged sample, contribute to the entire
precipitation strengthening by only 31.6%. The main reason why they are less useful compared to β00 precipitates
has been found to be associated with their smaller lattice strains relative to the matrix, which is 0.99% versus
2.10% (for β00 ). |

Abstract |
High-resolution transmission electron microscopy was performed on compacted Ni(3)Al nanostructured material prepared by the inert gas condensation technique. From electron diffraction data an incomplete L1(2) ordering of the crystallites is observed in the free particles as well as in the room temperature compacted samples. However, a completely ordered L1(2) structure with much bigger and well-defined crystallites exhibiting several defects is observed in material compacted and annealed at 773 K. Sharp crystallite boundaries as well as amorphous material and voids are observed in between crystallites in all samples, the former being dominant in the annealed material, the latter in the as-prepared one. |

Abstract |
The Al4C3-formed interfacial reaction plays an important role in tuning the mechanical and thermal properties of carbon/aluminum (C/Al) composites reinforced with carbonaceous materials such as multi-wall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) and graphene nanosheet. In terms of the hydrolysis nature of Al4C3, an electrochemical dissolution method was developed to quantitatively characterize the extent of C/Al interfacial reaction, which involves dissolving the composite samples in alkaline solution first, then collecting and measuring the CH4 gas released by Al4C3 hydrolysis with a gas chromatograph. Through a case study with powder metallurgy fabricated 2.0 wt.% MWCNT/Al composites, the detectability limit of the proposed method is 0.4 wt.% Al4C3, corresponding to 5 % extent of interfacial reaction with a measurement error of ±3 %. And then, with the already known MWCNT/Al reaction extent vs different sintering temperature and time, the reaction kinetics with an activation energy of 281 kJ mol-1 was successfully derived. Therefore, this rapid, sensitive, accurate method supplies an useful tool to optimize the processing and properties of all kinds of C/Al composites via interface design/control. |

Abstract |
In this work, we report an anomalous phenomenon on superelastic cycling of NiTi shape memory alloys when deforming at the temperature close to the border of superelastic window. New unexpected effects are found-(i) critical stress for inducing martensite transformation during the second loading cycle is higher than that of the first cycle; ( ii ) the plateau stress of the second cycle decreases to the original level when the strain overcomes the limit of the first cycle; ( iii ) transition from good superelasticity in the first cycle to fully irreversible strain in the second. We propose that defects generated during the first superelastic cycle close to the border of superelastic window impede following stress-induced martensitic transformations, leading to the increase of critical stress beyond yield stress of the B2 matrix, and thus functional fatigue of NiTi alloys. Abstract |
A cold-drawn Ti50.8 at.% Ni wire was annealed at 600 °C for 30 min, followed by aging at 250 °C for different times. A microstructure with small grains and nanoscaled precipitates was obtained. The thermally induced martensite transformation is suppressed in the samples aged for 4 h or longer, leaving a one-stage R-phase transition between −150 and +150 °C. The transformation behavior, work output and recovery stress associated with the R-phase transition are presented. |

Abstract |
In order to take advantage of both grain refinement and precipitation hardening effects, nanoscaled Ni4Ti3 precipitates are introduced in a Ti50.8 at.% Ni alloy with micron-sized grains (average grain size of 1.7 μm). Calorimetry, electrical resistance studies and thermomechanical tests were employed to study the transformation behavior and functional properties in relation to the obtained microstructure. A significant suppression of martensite transformation by the obtained microstructure is observed. The thermomechanical tests show that the advantageous properties of both grain refinement and precipitation hardening are combined in the developed materials, resulting in superior shape memory characteristics and stability of pseudoelasticity. It is concluded that introducing nanoscaled Ni4Ti3 precipitates into small grains is a new approach to improve the functional properties of NiTi shape memory alloys. |

Abstract |
A Ti-50.8at.%Ni wire produced using a co-drawing method and a commercial Ti-50.8at.%Ni wire were annealed at different temperatures between 450°C and 700°C. Grains with diameter less than 100nm were revealed by transmission electron microscopy for both wires before annealing treatment. However, the microstructural heterogeneity of the co-drawn wire is more obvious than that of the commercial wire. Multi-stage martensitic transformation was observed in the co-drawn wire, compared with the one-stage A↔M transformation in the commercial wire after annealing at 600°C for 30min. The differences of total elongation, plateau strain and pseudoelastic recoverable strain between the commercial wire and the co-drawn wire were also observed. The differences of the transformation behavior and mechanical properties between the commercial wire and the co-drawn wire are attributed to the microstructural difference between these two wires. |
