Title Kink-antikink vortex transfer in periodic-plus-random pinning potential : theoretical analysis and numerical experiments Type A1 Journal article

Volume 81 Issue 2 Pages

Abstract The influence of random pinning on the vortex dynamics in a periodic square potential under an external drive is investigated. Using numerical experiments and theoretical approach, we found several dynamical regimes of vortex motion that are different from the ones for a regular pinning potential. Vortex transfer is controlled by kinks and antikinks, which either pre-exist in the system or appear spontaneously in pairs and then propagate. When kinks and antikinks collide, they annihilate. We provide clear physical interpretations of the observed features.

Title Geometry-induced localization of thermal fluctuations in ultrathin superconducting structures Type A1 Journal article
Year 2010 Publication Physical review : B : condensed matter and materials physics Abbreviated Journal Phys Rev B
Volume 82 Issue 5 Pages 054523-054523,6
Keywords A1 Journal article; Condensed Matter Theory (CMT)
Abstract Thermal fluctuations of the order parameter in an ultrathin triangular-shaped superconducting structure are studied near Tc, in zero applied field. We find that the order parameter is prone to much larger fluctuations in the corners of the structure as compared to its interior. This geometry-induced localization of thermal fluctuations is attributed to the fact that condensate confinement in the corners is characterized by a lower effective dimensionality, which favors stronger fluctuations.

Title Vortex quantum tunneling versus thermal activation in ultrathin superconducting nanoislands Type A1 Journal article
Year 2012 Publication Physical review : B : condensed matter and materials physics Abbreviated Journal Phys Rev B
Volume 85 Issue 22 Pages 224508-224508,5

Abstract We consider two possible mechanisms for single-vortex fluctuative entry/exit through the surface barrier in ultrathin superconducting disk-shaped nanoislands made of Pb and consisting of just a few monoatomic layers, which can be fabricated using modern techniques. We estimate tunneling probabilities and establish criteria for the crossover between these two mechanisms depending on magnetic field and system sizes. For the case of vortex entry, quantum tunneling dominates on the major part of the temperature/flux phase diagram. For the case of vortex exit, thermal activation turns out to be more probable. This nontrivial result is due to the subtle balance between the barrier height and width, which determine rates of the thermal activation and quantum tunneling, respectively.

Title Stability of fractional vortex states in a two-band mesoscopic superconductor Type A1 Journal article
Year 2012 Publication Physical review : B : condensed matter and materials physics Abbreviated Journal Phys Rev B
Volume 86 Issue 2 Pages 024512
Keywords A1 Journal article; Condensed Matter Theory (CMT)
Abstract We investigate the stability of noncomposite fractional vortex states in a mesoscopic two-band superconductor within the two-component Ginzburg-Landau model. Our analysis explicitly takes into account the relationship between the model parameters and microscopic material parameters, such as partial density of states, Fermi velocities and elements of the electron-phonon coupling matrix. We have found that states with different phase winding number in each band (L-1 not equal L-2) and fractional flux can exist in many different configurations, including rather unconventional ones where the dominating band carries larger winding number and states where vertical bar L-1 – L-2 vertical bar > 1. We present a detailed analysis of the stability of the observed vortex structures with respect to changing the microscopic parameters, showing that, in the weak coupling case, fractional vortex states can be assessed in essentially the whole range of temperatures and applied magnetic fields in which both bands are active. Finally, we propose an efficient way of increasing the range of parameters for which these fractional vortex states can be stabilized. In particular, our proposal allows for observation of fractional vortex structures in materials with stronger coupling, where those states are forbidden at a homogeneous field. This is accomplished with the help of the stray fields of a suitably prepared magnetic dot placed nearby the superconducting disk.

Title Continuous structural transitions in quasi-one-dimensional classical Wigner crystals Type A1 Journal article
Year 2010 Publication Physical review : B : condensed matter and materials physics Abbreviated Journal Phys Rev B
Volume 81 Issue 2 Pages
Keywords A1 Journal article; Condensed Matter Theory (CMT)
Abstract We study the structural phase transitions in confined systems of strongly interacting particles. We consider infinite quasi-one-dimensional systems with different pairwise repulsive interactions in the presence of an external confinement following a power law. Within the framework of Landaus theory, we find the necessary conditions to observe continuous transitions and demonstrate that the only allowed continuous transition is between the single- and the double-chain configurations and that it only takes place when the confinement is parabolic. We determine analytically the behavior of the system at the transition point and calculate the critical exponents. Furthermore, we perform Monte Carlo simulations and find a perfect agreement between theory and numerics.

Title Graphene-silicene bilayer : a nanocapacitor with permanent dipole and piezoelectricity effect Type A1 Journal article
Year 2015 Publication Physical review : B : condensed matter and materials physics Abbreviated Journal Phys Rev B
Volume 92 Issue 92 Pages 155113
Keywords A1 Journal article; Condensed Matter Theory (CMT)
Abstract Using density functional theory, we study the electronic properties of a graphene-silicene bilayer (GSB). A single layer of silicene binds to the graphene layer with adhesion energy of about 25 meV/atom. This adhesion energy between the two layers follows accurately the well-known -1/z(2) dispersion energy as found between two infinite parallel plates. In small flakes of GSB with hydrogenated edges, negative charge is transferred from the graphene layer to the silicene layer, producing a permanent and a switchable polar bilayer, while in an infinite GSB, the negative charge is transferred from the silicene layer to the graphene layer. The graphene-silicene bilayer is a good candidate for a nanocapacitor with piezoelectric capabilities. We found that the permanent dipole of the bilayer can be tuned by an external perpendicular electric field.

Title Fano resonances in the conductance of graphene nanoribbons with side gates Type A1 Journal article
Year 2015 Publication Physical review : B : condensed matter and materials physics Abbreviated Journal Phys Rev B
Volume 91 Issue 91 Pages 035444
Keywords A1 Journal article; Condensed Matter Theory (CMT)
Abstract The control of side gates on the quantum electron transport in narrow graphene ribbons of different widths and edge types (armchair and zigzag) is investigated. The conductance exhibits Fano resonances with varying side gate potential. Resonant and antiresonant peaks in the conductance can be associated with the eigenstates of a closed system, and these peaks can be accurately fitted with a Fano line shape. The local density of states (LDOS) and the electron current show a specific behavior at these resonances, which depends on the ribbon edge type. In zigzag ribbons, transport is dominated by intervalley scattering, which is reflected in the transmission functions of individual modes. The side gates induce p-n interfaces near the edges at which the LDOS exhibits peaks. Near the resonance points, the electron current flows uniformly through the constriction, while near the antiresonances it creates vortices. In the armchair ribbons the LDOS spreads in areas of high potential, with current flowing near the edges.

Title Electrical and thermal-properties of a 2-dimensional electron-gas in a one-dimensional periodic potential Type A1 Journal article
Year 1992 Publication Physical review : B : condensed matter and materials physics Abbreviated Journal Phys Rev B
Volume 46 Issue 8 Pages 4667-4680
Keywords A1 Journal article; Condensed Matter Theory (CMT)
Abstract We investigate the influence of a periodic weak modulation along the x direction on the electrical and thermal properties of a two-dimensional electron gas in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field. The modulation lifts the degeneracy of the Landau levels and leads to one-dimensional magnetic bands whose bandwidth oscillates as a function of the magnetic field. At weak magnetic fields this gives rise to the Weiss oscillations in the magnetoresistance, discovered recently, which have a very weakly temperature-dependent amplitude and a period proportional to square-root n(e), when n(e) is the electron density. Diffusion-current contributions, proportional to the square of the bandwidth, dominate rho(xx), and collisional contributions, varying approximately as the square of the density of states, dominate rho(yy). The result is that rho(xx) and rho(yy) oscillate out of phase as observed. Asymptotic analytical expressions are presented for the conductivity tensor. Similar oscillations, of much smaller amplitude, occur in the thermodynamic quantities, such as the magnetization, the susceptibility, and the specific heat. We also predict oscillations in the Hall resistance, the cyclotron resonance position, the linewidth, as well as in the thermal conductivity and thermopower. The components of the thermal-resistance tensor have a magnetic-field dependence similar to that of the electrical-resistivity tensor.

Title Quantum transport of a two-dimensional electron gas in a spatially modulated magnetic field Type A1 Journal article
Year 1993 Publication Physical review : B : condensed matter and materials physics Abbreviated Journal Phys Rev B
Volume 47 Issue 3 Pages 1466-1473

Abstract Electrical transport properties of a two-dimensional electron gas axe studied in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field B modulated weakly and periodically along one direction, B = (B + B0 cos Kx)z, with B0 much less than B, K = 2pi/a, and a being the period of the modulation. B0 is taken constant or proportional to B. The Landau levels broaden into bands and their width, proportional to the modulation strength B0, oscillates with B and gives rise to oscillations in the magnetoresistance at low B. These oscillations reflect the commensurability between the cyclotron diameter at the Fermi level and the period a and consequently hey are distinctly different from the Shubnikov-de Ha.as ones, at higher B, in period and temperature dependence. The bandwidth at the Fermi energy can be one order of magnitude larger, at low B, than that of the electric case for equal modulation strengths. The resulting magnetoresistance oscillations have a much higher amplitude than those of the electric case with which they are out of phase. Explicit asymptotic expressions are derived for the temperature dependence of the transport coefficients. The case when both electric and magnetic modulations are present is also considered. The position of the resulting oscillations depends on the ratio delta between the two modulation strengths. When the modulations are out of phase there is no shift in the position of the oscillations when delta varies and for a particular value of delta the oscillations are suppressed.

Title Electronic and dynamical properties of Si/Ge core-shell nanowires Type A1 Journal article
Year 2010 Publication Physical review : B : condensed matter and materials physics Abbreviated Journal Phys Rev B
Volume 82 Issue 11 Pages 113411-113411,4
Keywords A1 Journal article; Condensed Matter Theory (CMT)
Abstract Full ab initio techniques are applied to study the electronic and dynamical properties of free standing, hydrogen-passivated Si/Ge core-shell nanowires oriented along the [110] direction. All studied wires exhibit a direct band gap and are found to be structurally stable. The different contributions of the core and shell atoms to the phonon spectra are identified. The acoustic phonon velocities and the frequencies of some typical optical modes are compared with those of pure Si and Ge nanowires. These depend either on the concentration or on the type of core material. Optical modes are hardened and longitudinal acoustic velocities are softened with decreasing wire diameter.

Title Convergence of quasiparticle band structures of Si and Ge nanowires in the GW approximation and the validity of scissor shifts Type A1 Journal article
Year 2011 Publication Physical review : B : condensed matter and materials physics Abbreviated Journal Phys Rev B
Volume 83 Issue 4 Pages 045306-045306,6
Keywords A1 Journal article; Condensed Matter Theory (CMT)
Abstract Starting from fully converged density-functional theory calculations, the quasiparticle corrections are calculated for different sized Si and Ge nanowires using the GW approximation. The effectiveness of recently developed techniques in speeding up the convergence of the quasiparticle calculations is demonstrated. The complete quasiparticle band structures are also obtained using an interpolation technique based on maximallylocalized Wannier functions. From the quasiparticle results, we assess the correctness of the commonly applied scissor-shift correction. Dispersion changes are observed, which are also reflected in changes in the effective band masses calculated taking into account quasiparticle corrections.

Title Coherent level mixing in dot energy spectra measured by magnetoresonant tunneling spectroscopy of vertical quantum dot molecules Type A1 Journal article
Year 2010 Publication Physical review : B : condensed matter and materials physics Abbreviated Journal Phys Rev B
Volume 81 Issue 24 Pages 245310,1-245310,15
Keywords A1 Journal article; Condensed Matter Theory (CMT)
Abstract We study by magnetoresonant tunneling spectroscopy single-particle energy spectra of the constituent weakly coupled dots in vertical quantum dot molecules over a wide energy window. The measured energy spectra are well modeled by calculated spectra for dots with in-plane confinement potentials that are elliptical and parabolic in form. However, in the regions where two, three, or four single-particle energy levels are naively expected to cross, we observe pronounced level anticrossing behavior and strong variations in the resonant currents as a consequence of coherent mixing induced by small deviations in the nearly ideal dot confinement potentials. We present detailed analysis of the energy spectra, and focus on two examples of three-level crossings whereby the coherent mixing leads to concurrent suppression and enhancement of the resonant currents when the anticrossing levels are minimally separated. The suppression of resonant current is of particular interest since it is a signature of dark state formation due to destructive interference. We also describe in detail and compare two measurement strategies to reliably extract the resonant currents required to characterize the level mixing.

Title Electronic properties of triangular and hexagonal MoS2 quantum dots Type A1 Journal article
Year 2015 Publication Physical review : B : condensed matter and materials physics Abbreviated Journal Phys Rev B
Volume 91 Issue 91 Pages 155410
Keywords A1 Journal article; Condensed Matter Theory (CMT)
Abstract Using the tight-binding approach, we calculate the electronic structure of triangular and hexagonal MoS2 quantum dots. Due to the orbital asymmetry we show that it is possible to form quantum dots with the same shape but having different electronic properties. The electronic states of triangular and hexagonal quantum dots are explored, as well as the local and total density of states and the convergence towards the bulk spectrum with dot size is investigated. Our calculations show that: (1) edge states appear in the band gap, (2) that there are a larger number of electronic states in the conduction band as compared to the valence band, and (3) the relative number of edge states decreases with increasing dot size.
