Title On the path integral representation of the Wigner function and the BarkerMurray ansatz Type A1 Journal article

Abstract The propagator of the Wigner function is constructed from the WignerLiouville equation as a phase space path integral over a new effective Lagrangian. In contrast to a paper by Barker and Murray (1983) [1], we show that the path integral can in general not be written as a linear superposition of classical phase space trajectories over a family of non-local forces. Instead, we adopt a saddle point expansion to show that the semiclassical Wigner function is a linear superposition of classical solutions for a different set of non-local time dependent forces. As shown by a simple example the specific form of the path integral makes the formulation ideal for Monte Carlo simulation.

Title Orientational disorder in some molecular solids in relation to the boson peak in glasses Type A1 Journal article
Year 2009 Publication Physics letters : A Abbreviated Journal Phys Lett A
Volume 373 Issue 7 Pages 799-800
Keywords A1 Journal article; Electron microscopy for materials research (EMAT)
Abstract Orientational disorder in some molecular solids is discussed in relation to the emphasis placed on transverse vibrational modes in glasses as the origin of the observed boson peak in two very recent contributions in Nature Materials. In particular, facts are here presented for (i) CH4, (ii) C60 and (iii) ethanol in their solid phases for (a) specific heat and (b) neutron scattering. The results for ethanol in particular do not fit in with the interpretation of the boson peak in terms of transverse acoustic phonons in disordered systems. Glasses will therefore have to be separated into at least two classes where the physical interpretation of the boson peak is concerned.

Title Adsorption of molecules on C3N nanosheet : a first-principles calculations Type A1 Journal article
Year 2019 Publication Chemical physics Abbreviated Journal Chem Phys
Volume 526 Issue 526 Pages 110442
Keywords A1 Journal article; Condensed Matter Theory (CMT)
Abstract Using first-principles calculations we investigate the interaction of various molecules, including H-2, N-2, CO, CO2, H2O, H2S, NH3, CH4 with a C3N nanosheet. Due to the weaker interaction between H-2, N-2, CO, CO2, H2O, H2S, NH3, and CH4 molecules with C3N, the adsorption energy is small and does not yield any significant distortion of the C3N lattice and the molecules are physisorbed. Calculated charge transfer shows that these molecules act as weak donors. However, adsorption of O-2, NO, NO2 and SO2 molecules are chemisorbed, they receive electrons from C3N and act as a strong acceptor. They interact strongly through hybridizing its frontier orbitals with the p-orbital of C3N, modifying the electronic structure of C3N. Our theoretical studies indicate that C3N-based sensor has a high potential for O-2, NO, NO2 and SO2 molecules detection.

Title Big is efficient : evidence from agricultural cooperatives in Ethiopia Type A1 Journal article
Year 2019 Publication Agricultural Economics Abbreviated Journal Agr Econ-Blackwell
Volume 50 Issue 50 Pages 555-566
Keywords A1 Journal article; Economics; Engineering Management (ENM)
Abstract In Ethiopia, there is a renewed interest in agricultural cooperatives as an institutional tool to improve the welfare of smallholder farmers. One of the pathways through which cooperatives benefit their members is scale economies. However, the establishment of cooperatives in Ethiopia seems to pay little attention to the size of the organizations. This article aims at investigating the effect of size on cost efficiency of agricultural cooperatives. More specifically, the purpose is to examine whether a single cooperative can serve a given number of farmers at a lower cost than two or more smaller cooperatives could. We employ the concept of cost subadditivity to compare the cost efficiency of large versus small cooperatives, and by extension unilateral actions. We estimate a flexible production technology using cross-sectional cooperative-level data. Findings show that costs would drop by 78% to 181% if farmers join hands in relatively large rather than small cooperatives.

Title C-H\cdots X (X = S, P) hydrogen bonding : the complexes of halothane with dimethyl sulfide and trimethylphosphine Type A1 Journal article
Year 2012 Publication Journal Of Molecular Structure Abbreviated Journal J Mol Struct
Volume 1023 Issue Pages 90-95
Keywords A1 Journal article; Electron Microscopy for Materials Science (EMAT);
Abstract The formation of CH⋯S and CH⋯P hydrogen bonded complexes of halothane, CHBrClCF3, with dimethyl sulfide(-d6) and trimethylphosphine(-d9) have been studied in solutions of liquid krypton using infrared and Raman spectroscopy. In the 1:1 complexes, the halothane CH stretching mode is found to be red-shifted by 43 cm−1 in the dimethyl sulfide complex, and by 63 cm−1 in the trimethylphosphine complex. The complexation enthalpies were derived and amount to −10.7(2) and −11.2(2) kJ mol−1 for the respective complexes. The experiments were supported by ab initio calculations and Monte Carlo simulations. The obtained data for the CH⋯S and CH⋯P hydrogen bonds is compared to that of corresponding CH⋯O and CH⋯N hydrogen bonds.

Abstract The conformational and configurational preferences of Me2PNSNPMe2 (3) and Me2PNSNAsMe2 (4) have been identified using quantum chemical calculations at the DFT/B3LYP/6-311+G* level of theory. An approach in which energetic, structural (geometries and bond orders), electronic (analysis of the electron density) and spectroscopic properties are combined leads to the conclusion that these sulfur-nitrogen-pnictogen chains share many of the properties of their chalcogen-nitrogen analogues but that the through-space intramolecular interactions favouring the Z,Z configuration are even weaker than in these latter compounds. The results of this analysis also lead to an unambiguous assignment of the variable-temperature 31P and 15N NMR spectra of these compounds and their structures both in solution and in the solid state.

Title A case series on lung deposition analysis of inhaled medication using functional imaging based computational fluid dynamics in asthmatic patients : effect of upper airway morphology and comparison with in vivo data Type A1 Journal article
Year 2012 Publication Inhalation Toxicology Abbreviated Journal Inhal Toxicol
Volume 24 Issue 2 Pages 81-88
Keywords A1 Journal article; Pharmacology. Therapy; Biophysics and Biomedical Physics; Condensed Matter Theory (CMT); Laboratory Experimental Medicine and Pediatrics (LEMP)
Abstract Context: Asthma affects 20 million Americans resulting in an economic burden of approximately $18 billion in the US alone (Allergies and Asthma Foundation 2000; National Center for Environmental Health (NCEH) 1999). Research studies based on differences in patient-specific airway morphology for asthma and the associated effect on deposition of inhaled aerosols are currently not available in the literature. Therefore, the role of morphological variations such as upper airway (extrathoracic) occlusion is not well documented. Objective: Functional imaging based computational fluid dynamics (CFD) of the respiratory airways for five asthmatic subjects is performed in this study using computed tomography (CT) based patient-specific airway models and boundary conditions. Methods: CT scans for 5 asthma patients were used to reconstruct 3D lung models using segmentation software. An averaged inhalation profile and patient-specific lobar flow distribution were used to perform the simulation. The simulations were used to obtain deposition for BDP/Formoterol (R) HFA pMDI in the patient-specific airway models. Results: The lung deposition obtained using CFD was in excellent agreement with available in vivo data using the same product. Specifically, CFD resulted in 30% lung deposition, whereas in vivo lung deposition was reported to be approximately 31%. Conclusion: It was concluded that a combination of patient-specific airway models and lobar boundary conditions can be used to obtain accurate lung deposition estimates. Lower lung deposition can be expected for patients with higher extrathoracic resistance. Novel respiratory drug delivery devices need to accommodate population subgroups based on these morphological and anatomical differences in addition to subject age.

Abstract The YbRuSn ternary system was investigated and a new material, Yb0.24Sn0.76Ru, with a simple cubic crystal structure, was discovered. Yb0.24Sn0.76Ru has a smaller lattice parameter a=3.217(4) Å, than its isostructural YbRu analogue (a=3.360 Å). Both X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy techniques were used to refine the crystal structure of Yb0.24Sn0.76Ru. It was found that a new compound forms in the CsCl structure, with Ru on the 1a site and a (Yb, Sn) mixture on site 1b. The XRD Rietveld analysis provides the occupation of Yb equal to 0.24, in agreement with the single crystal nano-electron diffraction refinement, which gives the occupation 0.21.

Abstract The nucleation and growth of titanium dioxide (TiO2) and zinc oxide (ZnO) thin films on Fe2O3 (hematite), Al2O3 (á-alumina) and SiO2 (á-quartz) are studied by molecular dynamics simulations. The results show the formation of a strong interface region between the substrate and the film in the six systems studied here. A combination of polycrystalline and amorphous phases are observed in the TiO2 films grown on the three substrates. ZnO deposition on the Fe2O3 and Al2O3 crystals yields a monocrystalline film growth. The ZnO film deposited on the SiO2 crystal exhibits less crystallinity. The simulation results are compared with experimental results available in the literature.

Abstract Yittria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) films doped with 3 and 9 vol%. Y(2)O(3), respectively, are epitaxially deposited on (0 0 1) silicon substrates by means of pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction are mainly combined to study the film microstructure. It is: found that the film structure strongly depends on the amount of Y(2)O(3) dopant. 99/0 Y(2)O(3)-doped films display a near cubic structure; 45 degrees 1/2(1 1 0) dislocations are the main defects in the film and thermal cracks are formed during cooling. The 3% Y(2)O(3)-doped films are dominated by {1 1 0} twin-related tetragonal domains in which monoclinic phase is found. The films are free of thermal cracks even for films thicker than 2 mum. Abstract High-quality single crystals of Rb2ZnCl4 and K2ZnCl4, pure or doped with Cu, Mn, Cd, Tl, Sn, Pb and In cations, were grown by Czochralski technique in argon atmosphere, using an experimental setup that allows direct visual access to the whole growth zone. Slowly cooled crystals exhibit excellent cleavage properties. Fastly cooled crystals do cleave poorly. As shown by X-ray diffraction studies, such K2ZnCl4 samples exhibit inclusions of the high-temperature Pmcn phase with lattice parameters a = 7.263(2) Angstrom, b = 12.562(2) Angstrom and c = 8.960(4) Angstrom in the P2(1) cn room temperature stable phase. ESR and optical spectroscopy studies revealed the localization and valence state of the cation dopants. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Title Hetero-epitaxial growth of CoSi2 thin films on Si(100) : template effects and epitaxial orientations Type A1 Journal article
Year 1998 Publication Journal of crystal growth Abbreviated Journal J Cryst Growth
Volume 191 Issue 3 Pages 430-438

Abstract This HREM investigation focuses on the influence of point defects on the final epitaxial relation and atomic interface configuration in a CoSi2/Si(1 0 0) heterostructure. A two-step SPE-MBE grown CoSi2/Si(1 0 0) system is used and, by altering the number of deposited Co monolayers in the template layer, the point defect behavior is studied. We propose a film growth model in which the knowledge about the reconstructed (2 x 1) : Si(1 0 0) surface, the point defect behavior in the presence of an interface, especially a silicide interface, the migration of point defects through a lattice by formation of [1 0 0]-split interstitial (dumbbell) atomic configurations, and a new type of extended defect configurations in diamond type materials will all amalgamate. Abstract The effect of introducing a photocatalytically active coating inside a plasma unit is investigated. This technique combines the advantages of high product selectivity from catalysis and the fast start-up from plasma technology. In this study, a preselected TiO2 coating is applied on the collector electrode of a DC corona discharge unit as non-thermal plasma reactor, in order to study the oxidation of ethylene. For both positive and negative polarities an enhanced mineralization is observed while the formation of by-products drastically decreases. The plasma catalytic unit gave the best results when using negative polarity at a voltage of 15kV. This shows the potential of plasma catalysis as indoor air purification technology.
