Abstract: PdCl3 belongs to a novel class of Dirac materials with Dirac spin-gapless semiconducting characteristics. In this paper based, on first-principles calculations, we have systematically investigated the effect of adatom adsorption, vacancy defects, electric field, strain, edge states and layer thickness on the electronic and magnetic properties of PdCl3 (palladium trichloride). Our results show that when spin-orbital coupling is included, PdCl3 exhibits the quantum anomalous Hall effect with a non-trivial band gap of 24 meV. With increasing number of layers, from monolayer to bulk, a transition occurs from a Dirac half-metal to a ferromagnetic metal. On application of a perpendicular electrical field to bilayer PdCl3, we find that the energy band gap decreases with increasing field. Uniaxial and biaxial strain, significantly modifies the electronic structure depending on the strain type and magnitude. Adsorption of adatom and topological defects have a dramatic effect on the electronic and magnetic properties of PdCl3. In particular, the structure can become a metal (Na), half-metal (Be, Ca, Al, Ti, V, Cr, Fe and Cu with, respective, 0.72, 9.71, 7.14, 6.90, 9.71, 4.33 and 9.5 μB magnetic moments), ferromagnetic-metal (Sc, Mn and Co with 4.55, 7.93 and 2.0 μB), spin-glass semiconductor (Mg, Ni with 3.30 and 8.63 μB), and dilute-magnetic semiconductor (Li, K and Zn with 9.0, 9.0 and 5.80 μB magnetic moment, respectively). Single Pd and double Pd + Cl vacancies in PdCl3 display dilute-magnetic semiconductor characteristics, while with a single Cl vacancy, the material becomes a half-metal. The calculated optical properties of PdCl3 suggest it could be a good candidate for microelectronic and optoelectronics devices.

Abstract: Past research efforts aiming at obtaining stable p-type ZnO have been based on complexes involving nitrogen doping. A recent experiment by (J. G. Reynolds et al., Appl. Phys. Lett., 2013, 102, 152114) demonstrated a significant ([similar]1018 cm−3) p-type behavior in N-doped ZnO films after appropriate annealing. The p-type conductivity was attributed to a VZnNOH shallow acceptor complex, formed by a Zn vacancy (VZn), N substituting O (NO), and H interstitial (Hi). We present here a first-principles hybrid functional study of this complex compared to the one without hydrogen. Our results confirm that the VZnNOH complex acts as an acceptor in ZnO. We find that H plays an important role, because it lowers the formation energy of the complex with respect to VZnNO, a complex known to exhibit (unstable) p-type behavior. However, this additional H atom also occupies the hole level at the origin of the shallow behavior of VZnNO, leaving only two states empty higher in the band gap and making the VZnNOH complex a deep acceptor. Therefore, we conclude that the cause of the observed p-type conductivity in experiment is not the presence of the VZnNOH complex, but probably the formation of the VZnNO complex during the annealing process.

Abstract: Owing to its inherent non-trivial geometry, the unique structural motif of the recently discovered kagome topological superconductor AV(3)Sb(5) (A = K, Rb, Cs) is an ideal host of diverse topologically non-trivial phenomena, including giant anomalous Hall conductivity, topological charge order, charge density wave (CDW), and unconventional superconductivity. Despite possessing a normal-state CDW order in the form of topological chiral charge order and diverse superconducting gaps structures, it remains unclear how fundamental atomic-level properties and many-body effects including Fermi surface nesting, electron-phonon coupling, and orbital hybridization contribute to these symmetry-breaking phenomena. Here, the direct participation of the V3d-Sb5p orbital hybridization in mediating the CDW phase transition in CsV3Sb5 is reported. The combination of temperature-dependent X-ray absorption and first-principles studies clearly indicates the inverse Star-of-David structure as the preferred reconstruction in the low-temperature CDW phase. The results highlight the critical role that Sb orbitals play and establish orbital hybridization as the direct mediator of the CDW states and structural transition dynamics in kagome unconventional superconductors. This is a significant step toward the fundamental understanding and control of the emerging correlated phases from the kagome lattice through the orbital interactions and provides promising approaches to novel regimes in unconventional orders and topology.

Abstract: Over the past decade, graphene oxide (GO) has emerged as a promising membrane material with superior separation performance and intriguing mechanical/chemical stability. However, its practical implementation remains very challenging primarily because of its undesirable swelling in an aqueous environment. Here, we demonstrated that dissociation of water molecules into H3O+ and OH- ions inside the interlayer gallery of a layered GO membrane can strongly affect its stability and performance. We reveal that H3O+ and OH- ions form clusters inside the GO laminates that impede the permeance of water and salt ions through the membrane. Dynamics of those clusters is sensitive to an external ac electric field, which can be used to tailor the membrane performance. The presence of H3O+ and OH- ions also leads to increased stability of the hydrogen bond (H-bond) network among the water molecules and the GO layers, which further reduces water permeance through the membrane, while crucially imparting stability to the layered GO membrane against undesirable swelling. Abstract: Our calculations, within known limitations of Ginzburg-Landau theory, are fully correct and valid for transport phenomena in asymmetric mesoscopic superconductors, deep in the superconducting state. We deemed the experiments of Burlakov et al. [JETP Lett. 86, 517 (2007)] relevant and important to mention in the general context of our paper since the observed shifts in the oscillations of different quantities are qualitatively similar, even though those measurements are performed close to the superconducting-normal state transition in the so-called Little-Parks regime.

Abstract: On the basis of the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equation we studied the dynamics of the superconducting condensate in a wide two-dimensional sample in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field and applied current. We could identify two critical currents: the current at which the pure superconducting state becomes unstable (J(c2)(1)) and the current at which the system transits from the resistive state to the superconducting state (J(c1) < J(c2)). The current J(c2) decreases monotonically with external magnetic field, while J(c1) exhibits a maximum at H*. For sufficient large magnetic fields the hysteresis disappears and J(c1) = J(c2) = Jc. In this high magnetic field region and for currents close to Jc the voltage appears as a result of the motion of separate vortices. With increasing current the moving vortices form,channels' with suppressed order parameter along which the vortices can move very fast. This leads to a sharp increase of the voltage. Abstract: On the basis of a simplified Hamiltonian for transition metal impurities in diluted magnetic semiconductors (DMS), the nature of ferromagnetism in p-type III-V DMS are investigated. Ferromagnetism is governed by the Anderson-Hubbard parameter for 3d electrons of Mn2+ and their strong hybridization with the hole carriers in the semiconducting medium. The origin of ferromagnetism in these materials has similarity with the Zener mechanism. From the energetically preferable parallel orientation of Mn spins the Curie temperature is calculated for GaAs:Mn. (C) 2002 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

Abstract: Objective: We aim to investigate if anatomical and functional properties of the upper airway using computerized 3D models derived from computed tomography (CT) scans better predict obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) severity than standard clinical markers. Methods: Consecutive children with suspected OSA underwent polysomnography, clinical assessment of upper airway patency, and a CT scan while awake. A three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of the pharyngeal airway was built from these images, and computational fluid dynamics modeling of low inspiratory flow was performed using open-source software. Results: Thirty-three children were included (23 boys; mean age, was 6.0 +/- 3.2 y). OSA was diagnosed in 23 patients. Children with OSA had a significantly lower volume of the overlap region between tonsils and the adenoids (median volume, 1408 mm compared to 2173 mm; p = 0.04), a lower mean cross-sectional area at this location (median volume, 69.3 mm(2) compared to 114.3 mm(2); p = 0.04), and a lower minimal cross-sectional area (median volume, 17.9 mm(2) compared to 25.9 mm(2); p = 0.05). Various significant correlations were found between several imaging parameters and the severity of OSA, most pronounced for upper airway conductance (r = -0.46) (p < 0.01) for correlation between upper airway conductance and the apnea-hypopnea index. No differences or significant correlations were observed with clinical parameters of upper airway patency. Preliminary data after treatment showed that none of the patients with residual OSA had their smallest cross-sectional area located in segment 3, and this frequency was significantly lower than in their peers whose sleep study normalized (64%; p = 0.05). Conclusion: Functional imaging parameters are highly correlated with OSA severity and are a more powerful correlate than clinical scores of upper airway patency. Preliminary data also showed that we could identify differences in the upper airway of those subjects who did not benefit from a local upper airway treatment. (c) 2013 Elsevier B.V. Abstract: Novel quantum phases of matter and developing practical control over their characteristics is one of the primary aims of current condensed matter physics. It offers the potential for a new generation of energy, electronic and photonic technologies. Among all the newly found phases of matter, topological insulators are novel phases of quantum matter with fascinating bulk band topology and surface states protected by specific symmetries. For example, at the boundary of a strong topological insulator and a trivial insulator, metallic surface states appear that are protected by time-reversal symmetry. As a result, the bulk continues to be insulating, while the surface can support exotic high-mobility spin-polarized electronic states. Since there is no such thing as a clean system, impurities and other disorders are always present in materials. Even while impurities appear to be unfavorable to a system at first look, doping the host system with impurities allows us to engineer different electronic properties of systems, such as the Fermi level or electron density. Because of the symmetry protected metallic states in topological insulators, charge transport responds distinctively to magnetic and non-magnetic impurities. This doctoral dissertation explores how the longitudinal charge transport in magnetic topological thin films and the anomalous Hall effect on the surface of 3D magnetic topological insulators is influenced by point-like and randomly distributed dilute magnetic impurities. We are interested in how charge transport in these systems responds to the orientation of the magnetization orientation and how this response evolves based on the system's main characteristics, such as the magnitude of the Fermi level or gate voltage. Because topological insulators have a strong spin-orbit coupling, the interaction between conducting electrons and local magnetic impurities is very anisotropic. We will show that this anisotropy even enhances when magnetic topological thin films are exposed to a substrate or gate voltage. Therefore, to properly capture this anisotropy in charge transport calculations, we rely on a generalized Boltzmann formalism together with a modified relaxation time scheme. We show that magnetic impurities affect the charge transport in topological insulators by inducing a transition selection rule that governs scatterings of electrons between various electronic states. We see that this selection rule is highly sensitive to the spin direction of the magnetic impurities as well as the position of the Fermi level. According to this selection rule and depending on the position of the Fermi level, two different transport regimes are realized in magnetic topological thin films. In one of these regimes, our findings show that a dissipation less charge current can be generated. In other words, even if there are many magnetic impurities in the system, electrons do not notice them and, remarkably, conduct charge without dissipation. Outside this regime, the charge transport is always dissipative and its sensitivity to the spatial orientation of the magnetic impurities can be effectively modulated by a substrate or gate voltage. In this doctoral thesis, we also explore the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) on the surface of 3D magnetic topological insulators. The AHE is generated by three mechanisms: the intrinsic effect (owing to a nonzero Berry curvature), the side jump effect, and the skew scattering effect. They compete to dominate the AHE in distinct regimes. Analytically, we calculate the contributions of all three mechanisms to the scattering of massive Dirac fermions by magnetic impurities. Our results reveal three transport regimes based on the relative importance of the engaged mechanisms. The identification of these three distinctive transport regimes can assist experimentalists in achieving a regime in which each contribution is dominant over the others, allowing them to measure them separately. Typically, this is not feasible empirically since the total value of the experimentally observed AHE conceals the specific information of each of the three contributions. Based on our analytical calculations, we prove that the AHE can change sign by varying the orientation of the surface magnetization, the concentration of impurities, and the location of the Fermi level, which is consistent with previous experimental findings. In addition, we show that by suitably adjusting the given parameters, any contribution to the AHE, or even the entire AHE, can be turned off. For example, in a system with in-plane magnetization, one can turn off the AHE by pushing the system into the completely metallic regime. Furthermore, we demonstrate that any contribution to the AHE, or even the whole AHE, can be turned off by appropriately changing the provided parameters. For example, in a system with in-plane magnetization, the AHE can be turned off by pushing the system into the fully metallic regime.

Abstract: Nonlinear dynamics of Josephson vortices (fluxons) in artificial stacks of superconducting-normal-superconducting Josephson junctions under simultaneously applied time-periodic ac and constant biasing dc currents is studied using the time dependent Ginzburg-Landau formalism with a Lawrence-Doniach extension. At zero external magnetic field and dc biasing current the resistive state of the system is characterized by periodic nucleation and annihilation of fluxon-antifluxon pairs, relative positions of which are determined by the state of neighboring junctions. Due to the mutual repulsive interaction, fluxons in different junctions move out of phase. Their collective motion can be synchronized by adding a small ac component to the biasing dc current. Coherent motion of fluxons is observed for a broad frequency range of the applied drive. In the coherent state the maximal output voltage, which is proportional to the number of junctions in the stack, is observed near the characteristic frequency of the system determined by the crossing of the fluxons across the sample. However, in this frequency range the dynamically synchronized state has an alternative-a less ordered state with smaller amplitude of the output voltage. Collective behavior of the junctions is strongly affected by the sloped sidewalls of the stack. Synchronization is observed only for weakly trapezoidal cross sections, whereas irregular motion of fluxons is observed for larger slopes of the sample edge.

Abstract: Non-charge-based logic devices are promising candidates for future logic circuits. Interest in studying and developing these devices has grown dramatically in the past decade as they possess key advantages over conventional CMOS technology. Due to their novel designs, a large number of micromagnetic simulations are required to fully characterize the behavior of these devices. The number and complexity of these simulations place large computational requirements on device development. We use state-of-the-art machine learning techniques to expedite identification of their behavior. Several intelligent sampling strategies are combined with machine learning multi-class classification models. These techniques are applied to a recently developed exchange-driven magnetic logic scheme that utilizes direct exchange coupling as the main driver.

Abstract: Nitrogen-doped graphene was recently synthesized and was reported to be a catalyst for hydrogen dissociative adsorption under a perpendicular applied electric field (F). In this work, the diffusion of H atoms on N-doped graphene, in the presence and absence of an applied perpendicular electric field, is studied using density functional theory. We demonstrate that the applied field can significantly facilitate the binding of hydrogen molecules on N-doped graphene through dissociative adsorption and diffusion on the surface. By removing the applied field the absorbed H atoms can be released efficiently. Our theoretical calculation indicates that N-doped graphene is a promising hydrogen storage material with reversible hydrogen adsorption/desorption where the applied electric field can act as a switch for the uptake/release processes.

Abstract: Neutron and high resolution X-ray diffraction investigations on perfect single crystals of RbH2PO4 (RDP), a hydrogen bonded ferroelectric of KDP type are reported. The results of crystal structure analysis from diffraction data, below and above the paraelectric – ferroelectric phase transition, support a disorder – order character Of [PO4H2](-)-groups. The tetragonal symmetry of the paraelectric phase with the double well potential of the hydrogen atoms obtained by diffraction, results simply from a time-space average of orthorhombic symmetry. According to the group – subgroup relation between the tetragonal space group 142d and the orthorhombic Fdd2 a short range order of ferroelectric clusters in the tetragonal phase is observed. With decreasing temperature the ferroelectric clusters increase and the long range interaction between their local polarisation vectors leads to the formation of lamellar ferroelectric domains with alternating polarisation directions at T-C = 147 K. From the high resolution X-ray data it is concluded that below T-C the ferroelastic strain in the (a,b)-plane leads to micro-angle grain boundaries at the domain walls. The tilt angle is enhanced by an applied electric field parallel to the ferroelectric axis. The resulting dislocations at the domain walls persist in the paraelectric phase leading to a memory effect for the arrangement of twin lamellae. With increased electric field the phase transition temperature T-C is decreased.

Abstract: Neutral excitons in axially symmetric GaAs nanodots embedded in an (Al, Ga) As matrix, which are formed by the droplet epitaxy technique, are investigated theoretically. An electric field perpendicular to the nanodot base results in both a vertical and an in-plane exciton polarization, which is beneficial for the appearance of the excitonic Aharonov-Bohm effect. In the range of low magnetic fields (below 5 Tesla), we found that the bright and dark exciton states can cross twice. This results in oscillations of the photoluminescence intensity with magnetic field, which are a striking manifestation of the optical excitonic Aharonov-Bohm effect.

Abstract: Nanoscale extension and refinement of the Lucas-Washburn model is presented with a detailed analysis of recent experimental data and extensive molecular dynamics simulations to investigate rapid water flow and water imbibition within nanocapillaries. Through a comparative analysis of capillary rise in hydrophilic nanochannels, an unexpected reversal of the anticipated trend, with an abnormal peak, of imbibition length below the size of 3 nm was discovered in hydrophilic nanochannels, surprisingly sharing the same physical origin as the well-known peak observed in flow rate within hydrophobic nanochannels. The extended imbibition model is applicable across diverse spatiotemporal scales and validated against simulation results and existing experimental data for both hydrophilic and hydrophobic
