Abstract: We report a microstructural and compositional study of a 90% Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O-3 – 10% PbTiO3 ceramic sample. High resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) revealed the presence of compositional ordered nano-domains (1 – 4 mn), observable in two specific orientations, [0 (1) over bar 1] and [1 1 (2) over bar]. However, the visibility and the ordering degree of the nano-domains on the HRTEM images are not at all obvious. Fourier filtering of the images clearly revealed the ordered domains. Antiphase boundaries lying in the (111) planes separate them, while (100) and (111) facets separate the ordered domains from the disordered matrix. Their shape is plate-like, not uniformly spread in the disordered matrix. Their average size varies in different regions of the sample, most probably due to a non-uniform distribution of Ti, as observed by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Abstract: We model the fluorescence spectra of planar spin oscillators to find conditions that maximize spin resonance fluorescence. Spin oscillators perform Rabi oscillations under the effect of a periodic effective magnetic field caused by the winding motion of an electron in a gradient of magnetic field. We show that, despite the weak coupling of the spin magnetic dipole to the vacuum, spin oscillators excited by a direct current output a few nanowatts of microwave power, which is comparable to the best microwave sources. The large quantum efficiency relies on the combination of two effects. On the one hand, the spontaneous emission rate is enhanced by the synchronization of spin oscillators, which interact through the microwave field that they emit. On the other hand, the huge Rabi frequencies experienced by spin oscillators promote spins into upper levels of Zeeman transitions, from which a radiative cascade is triggered. We demonstrate different regimes of fluorescence which correspond to different values of the Rabi period relative to the spontaneous decay time and to the oscillator dwell time in the gradient of magnetic field. We investigate the device parameters which make these regimes experimentally accessible and find conditions that optimize microwave output. We find that microwave emission is centered around the cutoff frequency of spin oscillators. This has the advantage that the peak emission frequency may be tuned from zero continuously up to a few hundred gigahertz using an electrostatic gate. Quite remarkably for a spintronics effect, electrically induced spin resonance fluorescence does not require the injection of a spin polarized current. In fact, we show that microwave spectra are mostly independent of the incoming spin polarization except for magnetic waveguides which are shorter than a certain critical length, which we will specify.

Abstract: We investigate the effects of coupling to multiple-phonon modes on the properties of a Holstein polaron. To this end, we generalize the Momentum Average approximations MA((0)) and MA((1)) to deal with multiple-phonon modes. As for a single-phonon mode, these approximations are found to be numerically very efficient. They become exact for very weak or very strong couplings, and are highly accurate in the intermediate regimes, e.g. the spectral weights obey exactly the first six, respectively eight, sum rules. Our results show that the effect on ground-state properties is cumulative in nature. As a result, if the effective coupling to one mode is much larger than to all the others, this mode effectively determines the ground-state properties. However, even very weak coupling to a second phonon mode has important non-perturbational effects on the higher-energy spectrum, in particular on the dispersion and the phonon statistics of the polaron band. This has important consequences on the analysis and interpretation of data for real materials.

Abstract: We compare the magnetic properties of pure and oxidized Co nanoparticles embedded in an amorphous Al2O3 matrix. Nanoparticles with diameters of 2 or 3 nm were prepared by alternate pulsed laser deposition in high vacuum conditions, and some of them were exposed to O-2 after production and before being embedded. The nanoparticles are organized in layers, the effective edge-to-edge in-depth separation being 5 or 10 nm. The lower saturation magnetizations per Co atom for the samples containing oxidized nanoparticles provide evidence for the formation of antiferromagnetic CoO shells in the nanoparticles. None of the samples with Co/CoO nanoparticles show exchange bias, while vertical hysteresis loop shifts and enhanced coercivities (as compared to samples with pure Co nanoparticles) are observed. This constitutes evidence for the nanoparticles size being in all cases smaller than the critical size for exchange bias. The difference in coercivity versus temperature dependences for the samples with pure and oxidized Co nanoparticles shows that the exchange anisotropy in Co/CoO nanoparticles appears at temperatures lower than 50 K. Abstract: Using a combination of electron holography and energy filtering, interference fringes produced after inelastic interaction of electrons with hydrogen molecules are examined. Surprisingly, the coherence of inelastic scattering increases when moving from the surface of a hydrogen-containing bubble to the vacuum. Abstract: The properties of a capacitive HF discharge with growing nanoparticles are studied with the use of kinetic PIC-MCC simulation. At the initial stage of growth, the nanoparticles are shown to be localized at the interface between the near-electrode layer and quasi-neutral plasma, where the rate of ionization by electron impact has the maximum value. At the beginning of formation of particles, plasma parameters change rapidly and a transition between the capacitive and spatial discharge burning modes is observed for a certain critical size of the particles. If the growth of the dust particles continues, their distribution over the discharge becomes more uniform and the steady-state parameters of the gas-discharge plasma hardly change.

Abstract: The mechanism allowing the transition from a two-dimensional strained layer of CdSe on ZnSe to self-assembled islands induced by the use of amorphous selenium is still not fully understood. For a better understanding, atomic force microscopy and transmission electron microscopy studies were performed on CdSe films with a thickness close to that for quantum dot formation. Below this thickness, the sample surface results in undulations along the [110] crystal direction, while few quantum dots are situated in the wave valleys. Plan view transmission electron microscopy studies reveal a strong anisotropy of the islands and show that the Se desorption conditions are crucial. (C) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: The authors propose a nondestructive method for the determination of the thickness of an amorphous sample. This method is based on the statistics of the phase of the electron exit wave function, which depend on the number of atoms traversed by the incident electron which itself is a function of the thickness of the object. Abstract: Samples of transparent glass-ceramics in the ternary system Li2O-Al2O3-SiO2 (LAS), with Er2O3 as a luminescent dopant, are investigated. The initial glass is obtained by the classical melting technique. In order to induce ceramization of the glass, TiO2 and ZrO2 are added in small amount as nucleating agents. The thermal treatments at 730 and 770 degrees C are carried out to promote formation of titanium zirconate solid solution precipitates. The spatial distribution of the precipitates in the material, their morphology, and their composition are investigated with TEM, HRTEM, HAADF-STEM, EELS and EFTEM. The results demonstrate that with the glass-melting preparation technique it is possible to achieve small nanoparticles with uniform distribution and higher number density than with the sol-gel glass preparation.

Abstract: Multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were decorated with metal clusters by thermal evaporation. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) shows that the nature and extent of metal coverage can be varied by plasma treating the MWCNT surface. The metal clusters on oxygen plasma treated arc-discharge MWCNTs have a more dense distribution than the clusters evaporated on as-synthesized are-discharge MWCNTs. In contrast, the plasma treatment did not affect the cluster distribution on CVD MWCNTs. Analyses of the valence band and the core levels by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy suggest poor charge transfer between gold clusters and MWCNTs; on the contrary suggest good charge transfer between Ni clusters and MWCNTs. Abstract: Molecular dynamic simulations are performed to investigate the melting process of small three-dimensional clusters (i.e., systems with one and two shells) of classical charged particles trapped in an isotropic parabolic potential. The confined particles interact through a repulsive potential. We find that the ground-state configurations for systems with N=6, 12, 13, and 38 particles interacting through a Coulomb potential are magic clusters. Such magic clusters have an octahedral or icosahedral symmetry and are found to have a large stability against intrashell diffusion leading to an intershell melting transition prior to the intrashell and radial melting process. For systems with two shells a local radial melting of subshells is found at low temperatures resulting in a structural transition leading to an increased symmetry of the ordered system. Using Lindemanns criterion the different melting temperatures are determined and the influence of the screening of the interparticle interaction was investigated. A normal mode analysis is performed and some of the normal modes are found to be determinantal for the melting process.

Abstract: Laser-induced plasmas are transient systems rapidly aging in few nanoseconds of evolution. Time-of-flight spectrometry allowed studying initial plasma characteristics based on frozen translational degrees of freedom, hence overcoming intrinsic limitations of optical spectroscopy. Experimental ion velocity distributions were reconstructed as developed during the longitudinal plasma expansion. The obtained onset plasma temperatures are in the range of similar to 18-45 eV depending on the ablated metals. Also the ion angular spreads were found to be a function of ablated metal, e.g., the narrowest for Fe, the broadest for Al, due to different collisional coupling in the plasma population. Abstract: In this work, GaN growth on porous Si(111) will be reported. The porosity of the substrates was 30% or 50%. In the latter case, various thicknesses, from 0.6 mu m to 10 mu m, were investigated. The morphology of the GaN surfaces was analyzed by optical interference microscopy. The crystalline quality of the epitaxial layers was characterized by High Resolution X-Ray Diffraction (HR-XRD) and cross-sectional Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). A Full Width at Half Maximum (FWHM) of the X-ray symmetric rocking curve (0002) 2 theta – omega scan of 290 arc see was obtained for a 1 mu m thick GaN layer, which is comparable with that of GaN grown on bulk Si(111) substrates. Abstract: In order to find out whether the existing laser systems can be employed to remove superimposed layers of paint on secco wall paintings in a selective way, laser tests were carried out on three types of prepared samples simulating three stratigraphies that are frequently encountered in practice. OM, EPMA, colorimetry, mu Raman, and FT-IR were used to evaluate the results. It was found that Q-switched Nd:YAG lasers emitting at 1,064 nm could be employed to remove unwanted layers of oil paint and limewash, but the treatment of large areas requires implementation of a computer-controlled X-Y-Z station in order to control the parameters. However, the applicability of this technique will remain limited as ablation at the established optimum parameters implied a discoloration of the pigments cinnabar, yellow ochre, and burnt sienna. Moreover, it was observed that no ablation took place when the limewash thickness exceeds 25 mu m. Unwanted layers of acrylic could be removed in an efficient way with an excimer laser emitting at 193 nm.

Abstract: Electron, hole, and exciton states in the stacks composed of three strained (InGa)As quantum rings were computed. We found considerable influence of strain on both the single particle and exciton spectra, while the oscillator strength for exciton recombination is reduced by the magnetic field.
