“Confined magnetic guiding orbit states”. Reijniers J, Matulis A, Chang K, Peeters FM, Vasilopoulos P, Europhysics letters 59, 749 (2002). http://doi.org/10.1209/epl/i2002-00189-8
Abstract: We show how snake-orbit states which run along a magnetic edge can be confined electrically. We consider a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) confined into a quantum wire, subjected to a strong perpendicular and steplike magnetic field B/ − B. Close to this magnetic step, new, spatially confined bound states arise as a result of the lateral confinement and the magnetic-field step. The number of states, with energy below the first Landau level, increases as B becomes stronger or as the wire width becomes larger. These bound states can be understood as an interference between two counter-propagating one-dimensional snake-orbit states.

Abstract: We report the suppression of the Hall effect in a mesoscopic Hall cross with a strong magnetic field only in the centre and vanishingly small outside, The local magnetic field is produced by placing Dy pillar on top of a structure with a high-mobility two-dimensional electron gas. The effect is found to be due to a sharp increase of the number of back-scattered and quasi-localised electron orbits. The possibility of localising electrons inside the magnetic inhomogeneity region is discussed. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

“Scattering of ballistic electrons at a mesoscopic spot of strong magnetic field”. Novoselov KS, Geim AK, Dubonos SV, Cornelissens YG, Peeters FM, Maan JC, Physical review : B : condensed matter and materials physics 65, 233312 (2002). http://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.65.233312
Abstract: We report quenching of the Hall effect with increasing magnetic field confined in a micron-sized spot. Such fields were created by placing tall ferromagnetic pillars on top of a two-dimensional electron gas, which allowed us to achieve the field strength up to 0.4 T under the pillars in the absence of external field. The quenching is accompanied by an anomalous increase in resistance and occurs when the cyclotron diameter matches the size of the magnetic spot. The results are explained by a rapid increase in the number of electrons that are scattered or quasilocalized by the magnetic region.

Abstract: We investigate the ground and excited states of a bipolar artificial molecule composed of two vertically coupled quantum dots containing different type of carriers-electrons and holes-in equilibrium. “Even-odd transition in the Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations in a two-dimensional electron gas subjected to periodic magnetic and electric modulations”. Abstract: We investigate low-temperature magnetotransport of high-mobility two-dimensional electron gases subjected to one-dimensional periodic magnetic and electric modulations. Our previous quantum perturbation theory is extended to lower temperatures and the energy broadening due to impurity scattering is incorporated. Numerical calculations are made for situations where several Landau bands overlap. We find that the Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations are dominated by collisional resistance. The amplitudes of the SdH oscillations are strongly modulated and the positions of the SdH minima switch between even and odd Landau-level filling factors, in the resistance both parallel and perpendicular to the one-dimensional modulation. This is a consequence of the internal structure (i.e., smeared out van Hove singularities) of overlapping Landau bands. Our theoretical results are in good agreement with recent experiments.

T2 –, 16th International Winterschool on Electronic Properties of Novel, Materials, MAR 02-09, 2002, KIRCHBERG, AUSTRIA , 417 (2002)
Abstract: We have studied the molecular energy terms of the hole configurations (h(u)(+))(m), m=2,3,4,5 of C-60(m+) cations and the electronic configurations (t(1u))(n) n=2,3,4, as well as (t(1u))(n-1)t(1g) of the C-60(n-) anions. The lowest terms (within an energy span of 0.03 eV) for C-60(2+) are three triplets T-3(1g), (3)G(g), T-3(2g) and for C-60(3+) are three quartets T-4(1u), (4)G(u), T-4(2u), which favor Jahn-Teller distortions. For the ground state of C-60(2-) we find a triplet T-3(1g) in agreement with Hund's rules. Our method takes into account intramolecular direct and exchange multipolar Coulomb interactions.

Abstract: We calculate the equilibrium properties and the dynamic response of two vertically coupled circular quantum dots populated by particles of different electrical charge sign, i.e., electrons and holes. The equilibrium density profiles are obtained and used to compute the frequencies and oscillator strengths of magnetoplasma excitations. We find a strong coupling between the modes derived from the center-of-mass modes of the individual dots which leads to an anticrossing with a pronounced oscillator strength transfer from the “acoustic” to the “optical” branch. Also, due to the breaking of the generalized Kohn theorem a number of other than center-of-mass modes are excited whose oscillator strengths, however, are rather weak.

Abstract: Two-dimensional electron gas systems patterned into micrometer Hall bars can be used as Hall magnetosensors. In this way, ballistic Hall probes have already been studied and used successfully. Here, the response function of a Hall sensor is determined in the diffusive regime, which allows this device to be used as a magnetosensor for the determination of inhomogeneous magnetic field distributions. Furthermore, the influence of the geometry of the Hall bar on this response function, such as circular corners and asymmetry in the probes, is also investigated and appears to be non-negligible. Abstract: Thin films of the superconducting Nd1+xBa2−xCu3O7−δ (NBCO) and Y1(NdxBa2−x)Cu3O7−δ (YNBCO) compounds have been deposited by dc magnetron sputtering and diode high pressure oxygen sputtering. Different techniques, including scanning tunneling microscopy, atomic force microscopy, X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) have been used to study the film microstructures and the surface morphology. It is shown that the Nd/Ba exchange promotes a 2D heteroepitaxial growth in the case of the NBCO films deposited on (1 0 0) SrTiO3 substrates, with a suppression of the characteristic 3D spirals structures. On the contrary in YNBCO the Nd/Ba exchange does not provide a driving force for the suppression of screw-dislocations, since spirals or towers originated by screw and half loop dislocations are observed on the surface. TEM reveals that anti-phase boundaries are eliminated during the growth of NBCO films thanks to the Nd/Ba exchange while this mechanism is not operating in the case of YNBCO films.

“Chemical microcharacterization of ultrathin iodide conversion layers and adsorbed thiocyanate surface layers on silver halide microcrystals with time-of-flight SIMS”. Verlinden G, Gijbels R, Geuens I, Microscopy and microanalysis 8, 216 (2002). http://doi.org/10.1017/S1431927602020159
Abstract: The technique of imaging time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) and dual beam depth, profiling has been used to study the composition of the surface of tabular silver halide microcrystals. Analysis of individual microcrystals with a size well below 1 mum from a given emulsion is possible. The method is successfully applied for the characterization of silver halide microcrystals with subpercent global iodide concentrations confined in surface layers with a thickness below 5 nm. The developed TOF-SIMS analytical procedure is explicitly demonstrated for the molecular imaging of adsorbed thiocyanate layers (SCN) at crystal surfaces of individual crystals and for the differentiation of iodide conversion layers synthesized with KI and with AgI micrates (nanocrystals with a size between 10 and 50 nm). It can be concluded that TOF-SIMS as a microanalytical, surface-sensitive technique has some unique properties over other analytical techniques for the study of complex structured surface layers of silver halide microcrystals. This offers valuable information to support the synthesis of future photographic emulsions.

“Superconducting properties of mesoscopic cylinders with enhanced surface superconductivity”. Baelus BJ, Yampolskii SV, Peeters FM, Montevecchi E, Indekeu JO, Physical review : B : condensed matter and materials physics 65, 024510 (2002). http://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.65.024510
Abstract: The superconducting state of an infinitely long superconducting cylinder surrounded by a medium which enhances its superconductivity near the boundary is studied within the nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau theory. This enhancement can be due to the proximity of another superconductor or due to surface treatment. Quantities such as the free energy, the magnetization and the Cooper-pair density are calculated. Phase diagrams are obtained to investigate how the critical field and the critical temperature depend on this surface enhancement for different values of the Ginzburg-Landau parameter kappa. Increasing the superconductivity near the surface leads to higher critical fields and critical temperatures. For small cylinder diameters only giant vortex states nucleate, while for larger cylinders multivortices can nucleate. The stability of these multivortex states also depends on the surface enhancement. For type-I superconductors we found the remarkable result that for a range of values of the surface extrapolation length the superconductor can transit from the Meissner state into superconducting states with vorticity L > 1. Such a behavior is not found for the case of large kappa, i.e., type-II superconductivity,

Abstract: The recently discovered structural transition in polymerized KC60 at about 50 K results in a doubling of the unit cell volume and accompanies the metal-insulator transition. Here we show that the ((a) over right arrow+(c) over right arrow,(b) over right arrow,(a) over right arrow-(c) over right arrow) superstructure results from small orientational charge density waves along the polymer chains and concomitant displacements of the surrounding K+ ions. The effect is specific for the space group Pmnn of KC60 and is absent in RbC60 and CsC60 (space group I2/m). The mechanism is relevant for the metal-insulator transition.

Abstract: The purpose of this Brief Report is to point out the mistake in a formula for anisotropic electron scattering, previously published in Phys. Rev. A 41, 1112 (1990), which is widely used in Monte Carlo models of gas discharges. Anisotropic electron scattering is investigated based on the screened Coulomb potential between electrons and neutral atoms. The approach is also applied for electron scattering by nonpolar neutral molecules. Differential cross sections for electron scattering by Ar, N2, and CH4 are constructed on the basis of momentum and integrated cross sections. The formula derived in this paper is useful for Monte Carlo simulations of gas discharges.

Abstract: The present paper describes the synthesis, characterization of mixed-valence bismuthates with three- or two-dimensional perovskite-like structures and structural criteria that influence superconductivity in these compounds. Single-phase samples of Sr1-xKxBiO3 were prepared for the broad range of K-content: 0.25 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.65. For these bismuthates the symmetry of the structure changes from monoclinic to orthorhombic and finally to tetragonal upon increasing the K-content thus resulting in the decrease of the Bi-O distances and reduction of the network distortions. Superconductivity with maximum T-c = 12 K exists in the narrow range (x approximate to 0.5-0.6) within the stability field of the tetragonal phase (0.33 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.65), when the three-dimensional octahedral framework has close to the ideal perovskite structure arrangement. The layered type (Ba,K)(3)Bi2O7 and (Ba,K)(2)BiO4 bismuthates belonging to the A(n+1)B(n)O(3n+1) homologous series were investigated. Buckling of the (BiO2) layers in the structure of the n = 2 member occurs due to the ordering of alkaline- and alkaline-earth cations between two independent positions. The formation of the one-layer bismuthate was revealed by Electron Microscopy and XRPD studies. Both types of compounds are considered to be possible candidates for new superconducting materials among bismuthates. (C) 2002 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

Abstract: The one vortex entry in a superconducting disk is investigated within the non-linear Ginzburg-Landau theory near the first critical field. We find that in mesoscopic superconducting disks the magnetic flux enters with fractions of one flux quantum phi(0) = ch/2e. For disks with a very smooth surface it is possible to drive the Meissner state so far into the metastable region that at the vortex entry a net amount of flux is expelled from the superconductor. We show that the magnetic field for flux entry is very sensitive to indentations of the disk surface and only weakly to bulges. On the other hand the flux exit field is practically insensitive to such geometrical surface defects. Our results are in agreement with recent experimental findings. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. Abstract: The nonuniform superconducting state in a ring in which the order parameter vanishing at one point is studied. This state is characterized by a jump of the phase by pi at the point where the order parameter becomes zero. In uniform rings such a state is a saddle-point state and consequently unstable. Abstract: The multiband effective-mass model of cylindrical self-assembled quantum dots in a magnetic field normal to the layer of the quantum dots is presented. The strain distribution is computed by the valence force field method. The strain-dependent multiband Hamiltonian is modified into an axially symmetric form, which commutes with the total angular momentum F-2 = fh. where f denotes the total magnetic quantum number. The heavy hole and the light hole parts in the mixed hole state are resolved. It is found that the heavy hole component dominates in the ground states for both f = 1/2 and 3/2. The electronic structure exhibits numerous anticrossings between the hole levels. The Zeeman splitting between the +\f\ and -\f\ states is also computed. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Abstract: The microstructure of BaTiO3 thin films, epitaxially deposited on (001) MgO by pulsed laser ablation, has been investigated by transmission electron microscopy. The films are always c-axis-orientated, but dislocations, {111} stacking faults, and antiphase boundaries are frequently observed. Conventional TEM and high-resolution microscopy allow one to deduce the Burgers vectors of dislocations as b(1) = <100> or b(2) = <110>, both being perfect dislocations. Most extrinsic stacking faults are ending at 1/3<112> or 1/3<111> partial dislocations; the displacement vector of the antiphase boundaries is 1/2<101>. Studying the interfacial structure by means of zone images taken along [100] and [110] shows that the misfit is mainly released by dislocations with Burgers vectors of 1/2<110> and 1/2<101>.

“Quantum-confined magneto-Stark effect in diluted magnetic semiconductor coupled quantum wells”. Chang K, Xia JB, Wu HB, Feng SL, Peeters FM, Applied physics letters 80, 1788 (2002). http://doi.org/10.1063/1.1459491
Abstract: The magneto-Stark effect in a diluted magnetic semiconductor (DMS) coupled quantum well (CQW) induced by an in-plane magnetic field is investigate theoretically. Unlike the usual electro-Stark effects, in a DMS CQW the Lorenz force leads to a spatially separated exciton. The in-plane magnetic field can shift the ground state of the magnetoexciton from a zero in-plane center of mass (CM)/momentum to a finite CM momentum, and render the ground state of magnetoexciton stable against radiative recombination due to momentum conservation. “Phase transition and magnetic anisotropy of (La,Sr)MnO3 thin films”. Wang Z-H, Kronmüller H, Lebedev OI, Gross GM, Razavi FS, Habermeier HU, Shen BG, Physical review : B : condensed matter and materials physics 65, 054411 (2002). http://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.65.054411
Abstract: The magnetic proper-ties and their correlation with the microstructure and electrical transport are investigated in La0.88Sr0.1MnO3 films grown on (100)SrTiO3 Single crystal substrates with thickness ranging from 100 to 2500 Angstrom. The ultrathin film (t = 100 Angstrom) has a single ferromagnetic transition (FMT) at T-c of 250 K, whereas the thicker films exhibit two FMTs, with the main one at a lowered T-c of 200 K while the minor one around 300 K. Furthermore, a thickness dependent magnetic anisotropy has been found, strongly indicating the existence of strain effect, which is also revealed by the transmission electron microscopy study. The suppressed Jahn-Teller distortion (JTD) by the epitaxial strain, and the recovered JTD due to the strain relexation are suggested to explain the metallic behavior in thin films and the insulating behavior in the thick film (t = 2500 Angstrom), repectively.

“Coupled mesoscopic superconductors : Ginzburg-Landau theory”. Baelus BJ, Yampolskii SV, Peeters FM, Physical review : B : condensed matter and materials physics 66, 024517 (2002). http://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.66.024517
Abstract: The magnetic coupling between two concentric mesoscopic superconductors with nonzero thickness is studied using the nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau theory. We calculated the free energy, the expelled field, the total field profile, the Cooper-pair density, and the current density distribution. By putting a smaller superconducting disk or ring in the center of a larger ring, the properties change drastically. Extra ground-state transitions are found, where the total vorticity stays the same, but the vorticity of the inner superconductor changes by 1. Due to the magnetic coupling, the current in the external ring exhibits extra jumps at the transition fields where the vorticity of the inner superconductor changes. In this case, for certain temperatures, re-entrant behavior and switching on and off of the superconducting behavior of the rings are found as a function of the magnetic field. A H-T phase diagram is obtained for the situation where the inner ring has a higher critical temperature than the outer ring. An analytic expression for the magnetic coupling is obtained for thin rings and extreme type-II superconductors.

“Dependence of the vortex configuration on the geometry of mesoscopic flat samples”. Baelus BJ, Peeters FM, Physical review : B : condensed matter and materials physics 65, 104515 (2002). http://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.65.104515
Abstract: The influence of the geometry of a thin superconducting sample on the penetration of the magnetic field lines and the arrangement of vortices are investigated theoretically. We compare the vortex state of superconducting disks, squares, and triangles with the same surface area having nonzero thickness. The coupled nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau equations are solved self-consistently and the important demagnetization effects are taken into account. We calculate and compare quantities such as the free energy, the magnetization, the Cooper-pair density, the magnetic field distribution, and the superconducting current density for the three geometries. For given vorticity the vortex lattice is different for the three geometries, i.e., it tries to adapt to the geometry of the sample. This also influences the stability range of the different vortex states. For certain magnetic field ranges we found a coexistence of a giant vortex placed in the center and single vortices towards the corners of the sample. The H-T phase diagram is obtained for the three investigated geometries and we found that the critical magnetic field is substantially enhanced for the triangle geometry.

“Trions in quantum wells”. Peeters FM, Riva C, Varga K, Few-body systems
T2 –, International Workshop on Dynamics and Structure of Critically Stable, Quantum Few-Body Systems, OCT 08-12, 2001, LES HOUCHES, FRANCE 31, 97 (2002). http://doi.org/10.1007/s006010200005
Abstract: The ground-state energy of three-particle systems consisting of electrons and holes as found in semiconducting quantum wells is studied. The degree of confinement is determined by the quantum-well width and we can vary the dimensionality of the system from two to three dimensions. The energy levels of the system can further be altered by the application of an external magnetic field which is directed perpendicular to the well.
