Abstract Several TEM techniques are used to characterise the local structure of low dimensional forms of carbon. HREM is particularly useful to describe the defect structure of thin films of diamond or fullerenes and C-60-C-70 nanoclusters. A columnar form of graphite is analysed, mainly by electron diffraction which allowed us to propose a growth mechanism. Diffraction contrast dark field microscopy, in combination with electron diffraction, allows a detailed characterisation of carbon nanotubes; e.g. the chirality distribution of tubes in ropes of single wall tubes is studied by selected area electron diffraction. Abstract La1-xCaxMnO3-delta (LCMO) thin films are grown by pulsed laser deposition on a (100) SrTiO3 substrate at temperatures between 530 degrees C and 890 degrees C. The magnetotransport properties show a high negative magnetoresistance and a shift of the maximum of the R(T) curve as function of temperature. The Curie temperature changes with deposition temperature and film quality in the range of 100-220K. The film quality is characterised by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy (TEM); film and target compositions were verified by atomic emission spectroscopy. The local structure of the film depends on the growth conditions and substrate temperature. TEM reveals a slight distortion of the film leading to a breakdown of the symmetry from orthorhombic to monoclinic. At the highest growth temperatures, a well defined interface is observed within the LCMO film, parallel to the substrate surface; this interface divides the film into two lamellae with a different microstructure. The lamella close to the substrate is perfectly coherent with the substrate, suggesting that it is strained as a result of the lattice parameter mismatch; the upper lamella shows a typical domain structure with unusual translation interfaces characterised by a displacement vector of the type 1/2[010](m) and 1/2[001](m) when referred ten the monoclinic lattice.

Abstract We are reporting an unexpected metal insulator transition at the ferromagnetic phase-transition temperature for thin films of La0.9Sr0.1MnO3 (< 50 nm), grown on a (100) face of SrTiO3 substrate. For the thicker films (> 50 nm), similar to the single crystal, no such transition is observed below T-C. Additionally, we observe the suppression of the features associated with charge or orbital ordering in intentionally La-deficient thin films of La0.88Sr0.1MnO3 (< 75 nm). In thin films, transmission electron microscopy reveals a compressive strain due to the epitaxial growth, that is, lattice parameters adopt those of the cubic lattice of SrTiO3. As the film thickness increases, coherent microtwinning is observed in the films and the films relax to a orthorhombic structure. (C) 2000 American Institute of Physics. [S0003-6951(00)00402-2].

Abstract The superstructure of the RE(2)(Sr0.85-xBaxNd0.15)(2)GaCU2O9 compound is found to change significantly with increasing substitution of Ba for Sr. Most of the changes take place in the (Sr0.85-xBaxNd0.15)O-GaO-(Sr0.85-xBaxNd0.15)O lamella, the rest of the basic structure being hardly affected. The structural changes for O less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.65 are studied by electron diffraction. The arrangement of the chains of GaO4 tetrahedra in the Ba-free compound becomes disordered at x > 0.25. At x similar to 0.65 a rearrangement of the chains in the GaO layers takes place; they form a meandering arrangement, which can be described on a 4a(p) x 2a(p) x c(p) superlattice. This rearrangement is accompanied by ordering of Ba and Sr atoms in the adjacent (ST0.85-xBaxNd0.15)O layers. A simple scheme is proposed to explain the influence of the substitution of Ba for Sr on the linking of the GaO4 tetrahedra and on the geometry of the ''chains'' in the GaO layer.

Abstract Catalytic methods for the production of carbon nanotubules have been developed based on the decomposition of acetylene on well-dispersed metal particles strongly adsorbed on a support. Cobalt on silica was found to be the best catalyst-support combination for the production of graphitic tubules. The method for the catalyst preparation and the reaction conditions were optimized. Straight and coiled carbon tubules were obtained with inner and outer diameter of 3-7 and 15-20 nm, respectively, and up to 30 mum in length. These nanotubules were not coated by amorphous carbon. Traces of amorphous carbon could be removed by hydrogen. High resolution electron microscopy images and electron diffraction patterns of the straight nanotubules were similar to those obtained by the arc-discharge method. Coiled nanotubules were revealed by TEM to be regular polygonized helices where the bends are caused by pairs of pentagon-heptagon carbon rings among the hexagonal network.

Abstract The growth features of FeCr2S4 spinel single crystals prepared by chemical vapour transport were studied by means of scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, high resolution electron microscopy, electron diffraction and X-ray analysis. Our results indicate that the epitaxial growth of the new phases FeCr7S12 and FeCr8S12, both based on the NiAs structure, can essentially inhibit the growth of large FeCr2S4 spinel single crystals in the octahedral habit. The new phases are fully characterised and the effects of defect ordering in these new phases are also reported.

Abstract Cubic as well as hexagonal single crystals of C70 have been grown and investigated by electron diffraction, electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Several phase transitions have been detected and crystallographic models are proposed. Hexagonal crystals, stable at room temperature with c/a = 1.63 will undergo two transitions, upon cooling. First the c/a ratio will increase to 1.82 owing to c-axis allignment of the molecules; at a lower temperature the molecules will orientationally order, resulting in a monoclinic structure.

Abstract A transmission electron microscopy study of epitaxial C-60 and C-70 films grown on a GeS (001) surface is presented. The relationship between the orientation of the substrate and the films and structural defects in the films, such as grain boundaries, unknown in bulk C-60 and C-70 crystals, are studied. Small misalignments of the overlayers with respect to the orientation of the substrate, so-called epitaxial rotations, exist mainly in C-70 films, but also sporadically in the C-60 overlayers. A simple symmetry model, previously used to predict the rotation of hexagonal overlayers on hexagonal substrates, is numerically tested and applied to the present situation. Some qualitative conclusions concerning the substrate-film interaction are deduced. (C) 1996 American Institute of Physics.
