Abstract: Epitaxially grown heterostructures consisting of alternating layers of LaMnO(3) (LMO, 9 or 15 unit cells) and SrMnO(3) (SMO, 4 or 6 unit cells) on a SrTiO(3)(100) (STO(100)) substrate have been studied by a combination of high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), electron diffraction, quantitative electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) with model fitting, energy filtered TEM (EFTEM) and imaging spectroscopy on an atomic scale. The combination of these techniques is necessary for the structural, chemical, and electronic characterization of these heterostructures. A model is proposed containing chemically and structurally sharp interfaces. The SrMnO(3) layers are stabilized in a Pm3m structure between two LMO layers. Tensile stress causes oxygen deficiency in the SMO layers increasing the number of 3d electrons on the Mn sites to resemble the Mn(3+) sites in LMO. The energy loss near edge structure (ELNES) of O and Mn is compared for both LMO and SMO layers and shows that the Mn-O bonds have a partially covalent character. The absence of a strong valency effect in the Mn ELNES is due to the oxygen vacancies in SMO.

Abstract: The purpose of this Brief Report is to point out the mistake in a formula for anisotropic electron scattering, previously published in Phys. Rev. A 41, 1112 (1990), which is widely used in Monte Carlo models of gas discharges. Anisotropic electron scattering is investigated based on the screened Coulomb potential between electrons and neutral atoms. The approach is also applied for electron scattering by nonpolar neutral molecules. Differential cross sections for electron scattering by Ar, N2, and CH4 are constructed on the basis of momentum and integrated cross sections. The formula derived in this paper is useful for Monte Carlo simulations of gas discharges.

Abstract: Cyclotron resonance in CdTe/CdMgTe quantum wells (QWs) was studied. Due to the polaron effect the zero-field effective mass is strongly influenced by the QW width. The experimental data have been described theoretically by taking into account electron-phonon coupling and the nonparabolicity of the conduction band. The subband structure was calculated self-consistently. The best fit was obtained for an electron-phonon coupling constant alpha = 0.3 and bare electron mass of m(b) = 0.092m(0).

Abstract: We have calculated analytically the spatial distribution of the electric field and current density, and obtained the Joule heat generation rate in a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) subjected to a non-homogeneous magnetic field of a 'chess' configuration. The generation of the Joule heat from the 2DEG is mainly concentrated near the singular corners of each 'chess' field and tends to zero in other corners. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Abstract: We present an approximate description of the giant vortex state in a thin mesoscopic superconducting disk within the phenomenological Ginzburg-Landau approach. Analytical asymptotic expressions for the energies of the states with fixed vorticity are obtained when a small magnetic flux is accumulated in the disk. Abstract: Thin films of the superconducting Nd1+xBa2−xCu3O7−δ (NBCO) and Y1(NdxBa2−x)Cu3O7−δ (YNBCO) compounds have been deposited by dc magnetron sputtering and diode high pressure oxygen sputtering. Different techniques, including scanning tunneling microscopy, atomic force microscopy, X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) have been used to study the film microstructures and the surface morphology. It is shown that the Nd/Ba exchange promotes a 2D heteroepitaxial growth in the case of the NBCO films deposited on (1 0 0) SrTiO3 substrates, with a suppression of the characteristic 3D spirals structures. On the contrary in YNBCO the Nd/Ba exchange does not provide a driving force for the suppression of screw-dislocations, since spirals or towers originated by screw and half loop dislocations are observed on the surface. TEM reveals that anti-phase boundaries are eliminated during the growth of NBCO films thanks to the Nd/Ba exchange while this mechanism is not operating in the case of YNBCO films.

Abstract: The multiband effective-mass model of cylindrical self-assembled quantum dots in a magnetic field normal to the layer of the quantum dots is presented. The strain distribution is computed by the valence force field method. The strain-dependent multiband Hamiltonian is modified into an axially symmetric form, which commutes with the total angular momentum F-2 = fh. where f denotes the total magnetic quantum number. The heavy hole and the light hole parts in the mixed hole state are resolved. It is found that the heavy hole component dominates in the ground states for both f = 1/2 and 3/2. The electronic structure exhibits numerous anticrossings between the hole levels. The Zeeman splitting between the +\f\ and -\f\ states is also computed. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Abstract: We report the suppression of the Hall effect in a mesoscopic Hall cross with a strong magnetic field only in the centre and vanishingly small outside, The local magnetic field is produced by placing Dy pillar on top of a structure with a high-mobility two-dimensional electron gas. The effect is found to be due to a sharp increase of the number of back-scattered and quasi-localised electron orbits. Abstract: We investigate the energy levels of the negatively and positively charged excitons (also called trions) in a 200 Angstrom wide GaAs quantum well in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field. Abstract: The ground state of a classical two-dimensional (2D) system with a finite number of charge particles, trapped by two positive impurity charges localized at a distance (z(0)) from the. 2D plane and separated from each other by a distance chi(p) are obtained. The impurities are allowed to carry more than one positive charge. This classical system can form a 2D-like classical molecule that exhibits structural transitions and spontaneous symmetry breaking as function of the separation between the positive charges before it transforms into two 2D-like classical atoms. We also observe structural transitions as a function of the dielectric constant of the substrate which supports the charged particles, in addition to broken symmetry states and unbinding of particles.
