Abstract: Within the framework of the nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau theory we investigate how the vortex expulsion and penetration fields are influenced by the presence of surface defects in superconducting disks with zero thickness. Abstract: The structural and melting properties of a quasi-one dimensional system of charged particles, interacting through a screened Coulomb potential are investigated. Depending on the density and the screening length, the system crystallizes in different lattice structures. The structural phase transitions between them are of first or second order. The melting of the system is studied through Monte Carlo simulations and reentrant behavior as a function of density is observed as well as evidence of anisotropic melting. Abstract: Using improved Wigner-Brillouin perturbation theory we study resonant electron-phonon interaction in a semiconductor quantum dot. We predict pinning of the excited energy levels to the ground state level plus one optical phonon as a function of the strength of the confinement potential. This effect should be observable through optical spectroscopic measurements.

Abstract: The influence of the geometry of a thin superconducting sample on the penetration of the magnetic field lines and the arrangement of vortices are investigated theoretically. We compare the vortex state of superconducting disks, squares, and triangles with the same surface area having nonzero thickness. The coupled nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau equations are solved self-consistently and the important demagnetization effects are taken into account. We calculate and compare quantities such as the free energy, the magnetization, the Cooper-pair density, the magnetic field distribution, and the superconducting current density for the three geometries. For given vorticity the vortex lattice is different for the three geometries, i.e., it tries to adapt to the geometry of the sample. This also influences the stability range of the different vortex states. For certain magnetic field ranges we found a coexistence of a giant vortex placed in the center and single vortices towards the corners of the sample. The H-T phase diagram is obtained for the three investigated geometries and we found that the critical magnetic field is substantially enhanced for the triangle geometry.

Abstract: The giant isotope effect on the ferro- and antiferroelectric transition temperature upon deuteration of hydrogen-bonded systems is well known experimentally since various decades. Yet, theoretically only recently a microscopic understanding of this effect has been achieved which, specifically, took into account the geometry of the O ... H ... O bond. The implications of this modeling are multiple as numerous hydrogen-bonded organic systems show the same effects as ferro- and antiferroelectrics, i.e., cooperative proton tunneling at a well-defined temperature.

Abstract: The electro-phonon resonance effect is a consequence of a resonant interaction between two electric subbands mediated by an optical phonon. It occurs in a quasi-two-dimensional electron system each time the energy difference between two electric subbands equals the energy of a Lo phonon. We study the influence of this effect on the electron mobility by using the momentum balance equation. The temperature and electron density dependences of the resonances are studied in the linear and non-linear response regimes.

Abstract: Hot-electron transport is studied for a two-dimensional electron gas coupled to longitudinal-optical phonons in crossed electric and magnetic fields. At low electric and high magnetic fields the electrons are accumulated, while at high electric fields they are in a streaming state. We develop a streaming-to-accumulation transition model and compare the results with that from a Monte Carlo simulation.

Abstract: We investigate the influence of a periodic weak modulation along the x direction on the electrical and thermal properties of a two-dimensional electron gas in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field. The modulation lifts the degeneracy of the Landau levels and leads to one-dimensional magnetic bands whose bandwidth oscillates as a function of the magnetic field. At weak magnetic fields this gives rise to the Weiss oscillations in the magnetoresistance, discovered recently, which have a very weakly temperature-dependent amplitude and a period proportional to square-root n(e), when n(e) is the electron density. Diffusion-current contributions, proportional to the square of the bandwidth, dominate rho(xx), and collisional contributions, varying approximately as the square of the density of states, dominate rho(yy). The result is that rho(xx) and rho(yy) oscillate out of phase as observed. Asymptotic analytical expressions are presented for the conductivity tensor. Similar oscillations, of much smaller amplitude, occur in the thermodynamic quantities, such as the magnetization, the susceptibility, and the specific heat. We also predict oscillations in the Hall resistance, the cyclotron resonance position, the linewidth, as well as in the thermal conductivity and thermopower. The components of the thermal-resistance tensor have a magnetic-field dependence similar to that of the electrical-resistivity tensor.

Abstract: In the limit of strong electron-phonon coupling, we use either a Pekar-type or an oscillator wave function for the center-of-mass coordinate and either a Coulomb or an oscillator wave function for the relative coordinate, and are able to reproduce all the results from the literature for the large-bipolaron binding energy. Lower bounds are constructed for the critical ratio eta(c) of dielectric constants below which bipolarons can exist. It is found that, in the strong-coupling limit, the stability region for bipolaron formation is much larger in two dimensions (2D) than in 3D. We introduce a model that combines the averaging of the relative coordinate over the asymptotically best wave function with a path-integral treatment of the center-of-mass motion. The stability region for bipolaron formation is increased compared with the full path-integral treatment at large values of the coupling constant alpha. The critical values are alpha(c) almost-equal-to 9.3 in 3D and alpha(c) almost-equal-to 4.5 in 2D. Phase diagrams for the presented models are also obtained in both 2D and 3D.

Abstract: A far-infrared absorption study of electrons in lightly-doped GaAs/Al0.3Ga0.7As superlattices is presented. Both weakly and strongly coupled superlattices are investigated, and the difference between intersubband transitions and transitions between extended minibands is demonstrated. At low temperatures, the absorption spectra are dominated by donor transitions. The 1s-2p(z) transition, which is intimately related to the intersubband transition, is observed. All experimental data are compared to an envelope function calculation for the miniband structure and a variational calculation for the donor energies. Excellent agreement between experiment and theory is achieved.

Abstract: The ordered configurations of a monolayer of interacting magnetic dipoles confined in a circular parabolic potential are investigated as a function of the dipole moment of the particles. Despite the circular confinement, we find very asymmetric ordered structures like chains and Y-shaped configurations when a magnetic field is applied parallel to the plane of the particles. The normal-mode spectrum of the particles and its dependence on the magnetic field and the strength of the dipole moment of the particles are studied. The vibrational and rotational modes of the spectrum, which are associated with the stability of the system, are investigated in detail. The number of particles is varied and we found different ordering of the particles for different values of the dipole moment and the magnetic field. A ring structure with a large number of particles is observed for high values of the dipole moment of the particles.

Abstract: The energy barrier which has to be overcome for a single vortex to enter or exit the sample is studied for thin superconducting disks, rings, and squares using the nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau theory. The shape and the height of the nucleation barrier is investigated for different sample radii and thicknesses and for different values of the Ginzburg-Landau parameter kappa. It is shown that the London theory considerably overestimates (underestimates) the energy barrier for vortex expulsion (penetration). (c) 2005 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract: The spin-polarized transport property of a diluted magnetic semiconductor two-dimensional electron gas is investigated theoretically at low temperature. A large current polarization can be found in this system even at small magnetic fields and oscillates with increasing magnetic field while the carrier polarization is vanishingly small. The magnitude as well as the sign of the current polarization can be tuned by varying magnetic field, the electron density and the Mn concentration. (c) 2005 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract: Wigner molecules formed at high magnetic fields in circular and elliptic quantum dots are studied by exact diagonalization (ED) and unrestricted Hartree-Fock (UHF) methods with multicenter basis of displaced lowest Landau level wave functions. The broken symmetry states with semi-classical charge density constructed from superpositions of the ED solutions are compared to the UHF results. UHF overlooks the dependence of the few-electron wave functions on the actual relative positions of electrons localized in different charge puddles and partially compensates for this neglect by an exaggerated separation of charge islands which are more strongly localized than in the exact broken-symmetry states. Abstract: Transport properties of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) are studied in the presence of a normal magnetic field B, of a weak one-dimensional (1D) periodic potential modulation V(x) = V(0)cos(Kx), and of the Rashba spin-orbit interaction (SOI) of strength a. For V(x) = 0 the SOI mixes the up and down spin states of neighboring Landau levels into two, unequally spaced energy branches. For V(x) not equal 0 these levels broaden into bands and their bandwidths oscillate with B. The n-th level bandwidth of each series vanishes at different values of B. Relative to the ID-modulated 2DEG without SOI and one flat-band condition, there are two flat-band conditions that depend on a and the transport coefficients can change considerably. For weak a the Weiss oscillations show beating patterns while for strong a the Shubnikov-de Haas ones axe split in two.
