Title A simplified quantum mechanical model for nanowire transistors based on non-linear variational calculus Type A1 Journal article
Year (down) 2010 Publication Journal of applied physics Abbreviated Journal J Appl Phys
  Volume 108 Issue 6 Pages 063708,1-063708,8
Keywords A1 Journal article; Condensed Matter Theory (CMT)
Abstract A simplified quantum mechanical model is developed to investigate quantum transport features such as the electron concentration and the current flowing through a silicon nanowire metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor (MOSFET). In particular, the electron concentration is extracted from a self-consistent solution of the Schrödinger and Poisson equations as well as the ballistic Boltzmann equation which have been solved by exploiting a nonlinear variational principle within the framework of the generalized local density approximation. A suitable action functional has been minimized and details of the implementation and its numerical minimization are given. The current density and its related current-voltage characteristics are calculated from the one-dimensional ballistic steady-state Boltzmann transport equation which is solved analytically by using the method of characteristic curves. The straightforward implementation, the computational speed and the good qualitative behavior of the transport characteristics observed in our approach make it a promising simulation method for modeling quantum transport in nanowire MOSFETs.

Title A methodology for the identification of glass panes of different origin in a single stained glass window: application on two 13th century windows Type A1 Journal article

Abstract The chemical composition of 11 glass panes originating from two 13th century non-figurative windows were analyzed by means of Scanning Electron MicroscopyEnergy Dispersive X-ray system (SEM-EDX). The windows were discovered in the back-wall of the triforium during the restoration of the choir of the cathedral St. Michael and St. Gudule in Brussels (Belgium). In order to determine if these windows were fabricated with glass of different origin or not, the compositional difference between the panes were compared with the variation in composition as a result of the following causes: (1) compositional fluctuation between panes cut from the same sheet of glass, (2) compositional fluctuation caused when panes are cut from different sheets that were made with the same batch, (3) compositional fluctuation caused when the glass is made from different batches at the same production center, and (4) compositional fluctuation as a result of glass produced at different fabrication centers.

Title Photo-excited carriers and optical conductance and transmission in graphene in the presence of phonon scattering Type A1 Journal article

Abstract We present a theoretical study of the optoelectronic properties of monolayer graphene. Including the effect of the electron-photon-phonon scattering, we employ the mass- and energy-balance equations derived from the Boltzmann equation to evaluate self-consistently the carrier densities, optical conductance and transmission coefficient in graphene in the presence of linearly polarized radiation field. We find that the photo-excited carrier density can be increased under infrared radiation and depend strongly on radiation intensity and frequency. For short wavelengths (lambda <3 mu m), the universal optical conductance sigma(0) = e(2)/4h is obtained and the light transmittance is about 0.97-0.98. Interestingly, there is an optical absorption window in the range 4-100 mu m which is induced by different transition energies required for inter- and intra-band optical absorption. The position and width of this absorption window depend sensitively on temperature and carrier density of the system. These results are relevant for applications of recently developed graphene devices in advanced optoelectronics such as the infrared photodetectors. Crown Copyright (C) 2009 Published by Elsevier B.V.   Title Proximity-induced pseudogap in mesoscopic superconductor/normal-metal bilayers Type A1 Journal article

Abstract Recent scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) measurements of the proximity effect in Au/La2−xSrxCuO4 and La1.55Sr0.45CuO4/La2−xSrxCuO4 bilayers showed a proximity-induced pseudogap [O. Yuli, I. Asulin, Y. Kalcheim, G. Koren, and O. Millo, Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 197003 (2009)]. We describe the proximity effect in mesoscopic superconductor/normal-metal bilayers by using the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations for a tight-binding Hamiltonian with competing antiferromagnetic and d-wave superconductivity orders. The temperature-dependent local density of states is calculated as a function of the distance from the interface. Bound state due to both d-wave and spin-density wave gaps are formed in the normal metal for energies less than the respective gaps. If there is a mismatch between the Fermi velocities in the two layers we observe that these states will shift in energy when spin-density wave order is present, thus inducing a minigap at finite energy. We conclude that the STM measurement in the proximity structures is able to distinguish between the two scenarios proposed for the pseudogap (competing or precursor to superconductivity).

Abstract Since Ehrenfests theorem, the role and importance of classical paths in quantum dynamics have been examined by several means. Along this line, we show that the classical equations of motion provide a solution to quantum dynamics, if appropriately incorporated into the Wigner distribution function, exactly reformulated in a type of Boltzmann equation. Also the quantum-mechanical features of the canonical ensemble can be studied in this framework of Newtonian dynamics, if the initial distribution function is appropriately constructed from the statistical operator.

Abstract The performance of a combined microbeam X-ray fluorescence/X-ray powder diffraction (XRF/XRPD) measurement station at Hamburger Synchrotronstrahlungslabor (HASYLAB) Beamline L is discussed in comparison to that at European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) ID18F/ID22. The angular resolution in the X-ray diffractograms is documented when different combinations of X-ray source, optics and X-ray diffraction detectors are employed. Typical angular resolution values in the range 0.30.5° are obtained at the bending magnet source when a pink beam form of excitation is employed. A similar setup at European Synchrotron Radiation Facility beamlines ID18F and ID22 allows to reach angular resolution values of 0.10.15°. In order to document the possibilities and limitations for speciation of metals in environmental materials by means of Hamburger Synchrotronstrahlungslabor Beamline L X-ray fluorescence/X-ray powder diffraction setup, two case studies are discussed, one involved in the identification of the crystal phases in which heavy metals such as chromium, iron, barium and lead are present in polluted soils of an industrial site (Val Basento, Italy) and another involved in the speciation of uranium in depleted uranium particles (Ceja Mountains, Kosovo). In the former case, the angular resolution is sufficient to allow identification of most crystalline phases present while in the latter case, it is necessary to dispose of an angular resolution of ca. 0.2° to distinguish between different forms of oxidized uranium.

Abstract A new oxygen-deficient Ruddlesden−Popper (RP) cobaltite Sm2BaCo2O7−δ (δ ≈ 1.0) has been synthesized and the crystal structure elucidated by Rietveld analysis of X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) data and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The phase crystallizes in a primitive orthorhombic unit cell, with lattice parameters a = 5.4371(4) Å; b = 5.4405(4) Å and c = 19.8629(6) Å, and space group Pnnm. Contrary to other oxygen-deficient cobalt RP phases, the oxygen vacancies are located in the equatorial positions of the [CoO] layers to give an intralayer structure similar to Sr2Mn2O5, which is not usually observed for cobalt-containing materials. The Sm3+ and Ba2+ cations show a strong preference for distinct sites, with the majority of the larger Ba2+ cations situated in the perovskite block layers and Sm3+ cations predominantly in the rock salt layers. Magnetic susceptibility data demonstrate the strong antiferromagnetic (AFM) character of Sm2BaCo2O7−δ.

Abstract The backward scattering of TM-polarized light by a two-side-open subwavelength slit in a metal film is analyzed. We show that the reflection coefficient versus wavelength possesses a Fabry-Perot-like dependence that is similar to the anomalous behavior of transmission reported in the study [Y. Takakura, Phys. Rev. Lett. 86, 5601 (2001)]. The open slit totally reflects the light at the near-to-resonance wavelengths. In addition, we show that the interference of incident and resonantly backward-scattered light produces in the near-field diffraction zone a spatially localized wave whose intensity is 10103 times greater than the incident wave, but one order of magnitude smaller than the intracavity intensity. The amplitude and phase of the resonant wave at the slit entrance and exit are different from that of a Fabry-Perot cavity.
