Abstract: Dielectric properties of materials are crucial in describing the electromagnetic response of materials. As devices are becoming considerably smaller than the optical wavelength, the conventional measuring methods based on optical response are limited by their spatial resolution. Electron energy loss spectroscopy performed in a scanning transmission electron microscope is a good alternative to obtain the dielectric properties with excellent spatial resolution. Due to the overlap of diffraction discs in scanning transmission electron microscopy, it is difficult to apply conventional experimental settings to suppress retardation losses. In this contribution, a relativistic dielectric model for the loss function is presented which is used in a model based optimization scheme to estimate the complex dielectric function of a material. The method is applied to experiments on bulk diamond and SrTiO3 and shows a good agreement with optical reference data when retardation effects are included. Application of this technique to nanoparticles is possible but several theoretical assumptions made in the model of the loss function are violated and interpretation becomes problematic.

Abstract: The energy-loss near-edge structure (ELNES) spectra of several carbon allotropes (non-hydrogenated and hydrogenated face-centered cubic (FCC) carbon, rhombohedral carbon, glitter, hexagonite and lonsdaleite) are calculated within the supercell-core-excited density functional theory approach. In particular an experimental ELNES spectrum of new diamond (n-diamond) [Konyashin et al., Diamond Relat. Mater. 10, (2001) 99102] is compared with the ELNES spectra of FCC carbon, rhombohedral carbon and the so-called glitter structure. Our calculations show that the ELNES spectrum considered in that publication cannot be that of FCC carbon.

Abstract: In this study the usefulness of micro-Computed Tomography (µ-CT) for the in-depth analysis of enamelled metal objects was tested. Usually investigations of enamelled metal artefacts are restricted to non-destructive surface analysis or analysis of cross sections after destructive sampling. Radiography, a commonly used technique in the field of cultural heritage studies, is limited to providing two-dimensional information about a three-dimensional object (Lang and Middleton, Radiography of Cultural Material, pp. 6061, Elsevier-Butterworth-Heinemann, Amsterdam-Stoneham-London, 2005). Obtaining virtual slices and information about the internal structure of these objects was made possible by CT analysis. With this technique the underlying metal work was studied without removing the decorative enamel layer. Moreover visible defects such as cracks were measured in both width and depth and as of yet invisible defects and weaker areas are visualised. All these features are of great interest to restorers and conservators as they allow a view inside these objects without so much as touching them.

Abstract: Nanocrystalline diamond films have generated much interested due to their diamond-like properties and low surface roughness. Several techniques have been used to obtain a high re-nucleation rate, such as hydrogen poor or high methane concentration plasmas. In this work, the properties of nano-diamond films grown on silicon substrates using a continuous DC bias voltage during the complete duration of growth are studied. Subsequently, the layers were characterised by several morphological, structural and optical techniques. Besides a thorough investigation of the surface structure, using SEM and AFM, special attention was paid to the bulk structure of the films. The application of FTIR, XRD, multi wavelength Raman spectroscopy, TEM and EELS yielded a detailed insight in important properties such as the amount of crystallinity, the hydrogen content and grain size. Although these films are smooth, they are under a considerable compressive stress. FTIR spectroscopy points to a high hydrogen content in the films, while Raman and EELS indicate a high concentration of sp2 carbon. TEM and EELS show that these films consist of diamond nano-grains mixed with an amorphous sp2 bonded carbon, these results are consistent with the XRD and UV Raman spectroscopy data.

Abstract: A single crystal of Cu74.08Al23.13Be2.79 undergoes a martensitic phase transition at 246 and 232 K under heating and cooling, respectively. The phase fronts between the austenite and martensite regions of the sample are weakly mobile with a power-law resonance under external stress fields. Surprisingly, the martensite phase is elastically much harder than the austenite phase showing that interfaces between various crystallographic variants are strongly pinned and cannot be moved by external stress while the phase boundary between the austenite and martensite regions in the sample remains mobile. This unusual behavior was studied by dynamical mechanical analysis (DMA) and resonant ultrasound spectroscopy. The remnant strain, storage modulus, and internal friction were recorded simultaneously for different applied forces in DMA. With increasing forces, the remnant strain increases monotonously while the internal friction peak height shows a minimum at 300 mN. Transmission electron microscopy shows that the pinning is generated by dislocations which are inherited from the austenite phase.

Abstract: A functionally graded multilayer NiTi thin film was deposited on a SiO2/Si substrate by d.c. sputtering using a ramped heated NiTi alloy target. The stand-alone films were crystallized at 500°C in vacuum better than 10-7 Torr. Transmission electron microscopy micrographs taken along the film cross section show two distinct regions, thin and thick, with weak R and B2 phases, respectively. The film compositions along the thickness were measured and quantified using the standard-less EELSMODEL method. The film deposited during the initial thermal ramp (thin regions) displays an average of 54 at.% Ni while the film deposited at a more elevated target temperature (thick regions) shows about 51 at.% Ni.

Abstract: Intercalation of lithium in the ribbon structure Li4Mo5O17 has been achieved, using both electrochemistry and soft chemistry. The ab initio structure determination of the ¡°Mo−O¡± framework of Li12Mo5O17 shows that the [Mo5O17]¡Þ ribbons keep the same arrangement of edge sharing MoO6 octahedra and the same orientation as in the parent structure but that a topotactic antidistortion of the ribbons appears, as a result of the larger size of Mo4+ in ¡°Li12¡± compared to Mo6+ in ¡°Li4¡±. On the basis of bond valence calculations, it is observed that 12 octahedral sites are available for Li+ in the new structure so that an ordered hypothetical rock salt type structure can be proposed for Li12Mo5O17. After the first Li insertion, a stable reversible capacity of 100 mA¡¤h/g is maintained after 20 cycles. A complete structural reversibility leading back to the ribbon type Li4Mo5O17 structure is obtained using a very low rate of C/100. The exploration of the Li mobility in those oxides shows that Li4Mo5O17 is a cationic conductor with ¦Ò = 10−3.5 S/cm at 500 ¡ãC and Ea = 0.35 eV.

Abstract: The thermal behavior under air of LiFePO(4)-based powders was investigated through the combination of several techniques such as temperature-controlled X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis and Mossbauer and NMR spectroscopies. The reactivity with air at moderate temperatures depends on the particle size and leads to progressive displacement of Fe from the core structure yielding nano-size Fe(2)O(3) and highly defective, oxidized Li(x)Fe(y)PO(4) compositions whose unit-cell volume decreases dramatically when the temperature is raised between 400 and 600 K. The novel LiFePO(4)-like compositions display new electrochemical reactivity when used as positive electrodes in Li batteries. Several redox phenomena between 3.4 V and 2.7 V vs. Li were discovered and followed by in-situ X-ray diffraction, which revealed two distinct solid solution domains associated with highly anisotropic variations of the unit-cell constants.

Abstract: Sylgard®184/multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWNT) composites have been prepared by in situ polymerization using purified and functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (f-MWNTs) as fillers. Surface modification of the MWNTs has been carried out by silanization with 7-octenyltrichlorosilane (7OTCS) and n-octyltrichlorosilane (nOTCS). The modification and dispersion of the carbon nanotubes in composites were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), transmission electron spectroscopy (TEM), and high-resolution transmission electron spectroscopy (HRTEM). Youngs modulus results were derived from indentation testing. It is shown that the terminal-vinyl group of 7OTCS molecules plays an essential role for both the dispersion of the f-MWNTs in the composite and its mechanical properties. At loading as low as 0.2 wt%, the Youngs modulus is shown to increase up to 50%. This is interpreted as resulting from a combination of the good compatibility in the forming silicone matrix of the MWNTs coated with a siloxane network, on the one hand, and the covalent links created between the terminal-vinyl groups and the host matrix in formation, on the other hand.

Abstract: The activity concentration of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K in gas concrete samples collected from different suppliers and some provinces in Turkey were measured using gamma-ray spectrometry. Knowledge of radioactivity in gas concrete used in building materials enables one to assess any possible radiological risks to human health. The mean activity concentrations observed in the gas concrete samples were 82.0, 28.2 and 383.9 Bq kg−1 for 226Ra, 232Th and 40K, respectively. The radium equivalent activity, external and internal hazard indices as well as terrestrial absorbed dose and annual effective dose rate was calculated. The results indicate that the radium equivalent activity values of gas concrete samples are lower than the limit of 370 Bq kg−1, equivalent to a gamma-dose of 1.5 mSv y−1. Moreover, mass attenuation coefficients were measured in some gas concrete samples. It was found that the mass attenuation coefficients decreased with increasing photon energies. Also, chemical compositions and structural analysis (XRD and SEM) of the gas concrete samples were investigated.

Abstract: Samples of the secondary uranium minerals collected in the abandoned uranium mine at Pecs (Hungary) were investigated by two micro-techniques: scanning electron microscopy (SEM/EDX) and micro-Raman spectroscopy (MRS). They were applied to locate U-rich particles and identify the chemical form and oxidation state of the uranium compounds. The most abundant mineral was a K and/or Na uranyl sulphate (zippeite group). U(VI) was also present in the form showing intensive Raman scattering at 860 cm−1 which can be attributed to uranium trioxide. This research has shown the successful application of micro-Raman spectroscopy for the identification of uranyl mineral species on the level of individual particles.

Abstract: The limitations of the loading of the porous metalorganic framework [Zn4O(bdc)3] (bdc = benzene-1,4-dicarboxylate; MOF-5 or IRMOF-1) with Pd nanoparticles was investigated. First, the volatile organometallic precursor [Pd(5-C5H5)(3-C3H5)] was employed to get the inclusion compound [Pd(5-C5H5)(3-C3H5)]x@MOF-5 via gas-phase infiltration at 10-3 mbar. A loading of four molecules of [Pd(5-C5H5)(3-C3H5)] per formula unit of MOF-5 (x = 4) can be reached (35 wt.% Pd). Second, the metalorganic precursor [Pd(acac)2] (acac = 2,4-pentanedionate) was used and the inclusion materials [Pd(acac)2]x@MOF-5 of different Pd loadings were obtained by incipient wetness infiltration. However, the maximum loading was lower as compared with the former case with about two precursor molecules per formula unit of MOF-5. Both loading routes are suitable for the synthesis of Pd nanoparticles inside the porous host matrix. Homogeneously distributed nanoparticles with diameter of 2.4(±0.2) nm can be achieved by photolysis of the inclusion compounds [Pd(5-C5H5)(3-C3H5)]x@MOF-5 (x 4), while the hydrogenolysis of [Pd(acac)2]x@MOF-5 (x 2) leads to a mixture of small particles inside the network (< 3 nm) and large Pd agglomerates (40 nm) on the outer surface of the MOF-5 specimens. The pure Pdx@MOF-5 materials proved to be stable under hydrogen pressure (2 bar) at 150 °C over many hours. Neither hydrogenation of the bdc linkers nor particle growth was observed. The new composite materials were characterized by 1H/13C-MAS-NMR, powder XRD, ICP-AES, FT-IR, N2 sorption measurements and high resolution TEM. Raising the Pd loading of a representative sample Pd4@MOF-5 (35 wt.% Pd) by using [Pd(5-C5H5)(3-C3H5)] as precursor in a second cycle of gas-phase infiltration and photolysis was accompanied by the collapse of the long-range crystalline order of the MOF.

Abstract: ZSM-48 and related zeolites are considered to be highly disordered structures. Different polytypes can be clearly distinguished by simulation of high-resolution electron microscopy images. Synthesis of phase-pure polytypes was attempted. One of the investigated samples crystallized via seeding designated as COK-8 consisted of nanoscopic, needlelike crystals with a very large length/width ratio, growing along the pore direction. These specimens are phase-pure polytype 6 (PT6, numbering according to Lobo and van Koningsveld). Aggregates of these nanoneedles occasionally contained a second polytype: PT1. The latter polytype occurred more abundantly in larger crystal rods in an IZM-1 sample crystallized in ethylene glycol. Here too, the isolated crystallites mainly consist of large, defect-free regions of PT6. A simulation of polytype lattice energies offers a rational explanation for the observed polytypical intergrowth formation.
