Abstract Composite (La0.67Ca0.33MnO3)(1-x):(MgO)(x) films were prepared by metalorganic aerosol deposition on a (100)MgO substrate for different concentrations of the (MgO) phase (0less than or equal toxless than or equal to0.8). At xapproximate to0.3 a percolation threshold in conductivity is reached, at which an infinite insulating MgO cluster forms around the La0.67Ca0.33MnO3 grains. This yields a drastic increase of the electrical resistance for films with x>0.3. The film structure is characterized by x-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The local structure of the La0.67Ca0.33MnO3 within the film depends on the MgO concentration which grows epitaxially along the domain boundaries. A different structural phase transition from the orthorhombic Pnma structure to an unusual rhombohedral R (3) over barc structure at the percolation threshold xapproximate to0.3 is found for La0.67Ca0.33MnO3. A three-dimensional stress accommodation in thick films through a phase transition is suggested.

Abstract Nickel foams were used as catalysts to dissociate acetylene and deposit carbon atoms. Graphite nanofibers with distinct structures were developed at 550degreesC with nickel foams pretreated with hydrogen. HREM observations showed that the graphite layers of the nanofibers were aligned at a certain angle to the fiber axis. It is suggested that hydrogen treatment and metal catalysts have a tremendous impact on the yields and microstructures of the graphite nanofibers. The growth mechanism of these fish-bone graphite nanofibers is also discussed.

Abstract Epitaxially grown heterostructures consisting of alternating layers of LaMnO(3) (LMO, 9 or 15 unit cells) and SrMnO(3) (SMO, 4 or 6 unit cells) on a SrTiO(3)(100) (STO(100)) substrate have been studied by a combination of high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), electron diffraction, quantitative electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) with model fitting, energy filtered TEM (EFTEM) and imaging spectroscopy on an atomic scale. The combination of these techniques is necessary for the structural, chemical, and electronic characterization of these heterostructures. A model is proposed containing chemically and structurally sharp interfaces. The SrMnO(3) layers are stabilized in a Pm3m structure between two LMO layers. Tensile stress causes oxygen deficiency in the SMO layers increasing the number of 3d electrons on the Mn sites to resemble the Mn(3+) sites in LMO. The energy loss near edge structure (ELNES) of O and Mn is compared for both LMO and SMO layers and shows that the Mn-O bonds have a partially covalent character. The absence of a strong valency effect in the Mn ELNES is due to the oxygen vacancies in SMO.

Abstract The present paper describes the synthesis, characterization of mixed-valence bismuthates with three- or two-dimensional perovskite-like structures and structural criteria that influence superconductivity in these compounds. Single-phase samples of Sr1-xKxBiO3 were prepared for the broad range of K-content: 0.25 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.65. For these bismuthates the symmetry of the structure changes from monoclinic to orthorhombic and finally to tetragonal upon increasing the K-content thus resulting in the decrease of the Bi-O distances and reduction of the network distortions. Superconductivity with maximum T-c = 12 K exists in the narrow range (x approximate to 0.5-0.6) within the stability field of the tetragonal phase (0.33 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.65), when the three-dimensional octahedral framework has close to the ideal perovskite structure arrangement. The layered type (Ba,K)(3)Bi2O7 and (Ba,K)(2)BiO4 bismuthates belonging to the A(n+1)B(n)O(3n+1) homologous series were investigated. Buckling of the (BiO2) layers in the structure of the n = 2 member occurs due to the ordering of alkaline- and alkaline-earth cations between two independent positions. The formation of the one-layer bismuthate was revealed by Electron Microscopy and XRPD studies. Both types of compounds are considered to be possible candidates for new superconducting materials among bismuthates. (C) 2002 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

Abstract The dissociation of 60degrees and screw dislocations in diamond is modeled in an approach combining isotropic elasticity theory with ab initio-based tight-binding total-energy calculations. Both dislocations are found to dissociate with a substantial lowering of their line energies. For the 60degrees dislocation, however, an energy barrier to dissociation is found. We investigate the core structure of a screw dislocation distinguishing “shuffle,” “mixed,” and “glide” cores. The latter is found to be the most stable undissociated screw dislocation. Further, the glide motion of 90degrees and 30degrees partials is discussed in terms of a process involving the thermal formation and subsequent migration of kinks along the dislocation line. The calculated activation barriers to dislocation motion show that the 30degrees partial is less mobile than the 90degrees partial. Finally, high-resolution electron microscopy is performed on high-temperature, high-pressure annealed natural brown diamond, allowing the core regions of 60degrees dislocations to be imaged. The majority of dislocations are found to be dissociated. However, in some cases, undissociated 60degrees dislocations were also observed.

Abstract Co and Fe nanowires and/or nanotubes are electrochemically synthesized through nanoporous membranes. By combining high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), and energy filtered TEM techniques, their structural and crystallographic characteristics are precisely determined. The synthesis was shown to produce cigar-shaped single monocrystalline Co and Fe nanowires with a diameter of about 60 nm. All wires were surrounded by an epitaxial oxide layer (Co3O4 or Fe3O4) of roughly 10 nm. The Fe nanotubes were built up of Fe3O4 nanocrystals. Electron diffraction showed that all nanocrystals had a common crystallographic axis, creating a pseudomonocrystalline wall in the nanotubes. (C) 2003 The Electrochemical Society.

Abstract Structural, chemical, and physical properties of whitlockite-type Ca9Bi(VO4)(7) were studied by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), electron diffraction (ED), second-harmonic generation (SHG), thermogravimetry, differential scanning calorimetry, dielectric, and electrical-conductivity measurements. A new phase-transition of the ferroelectric type was found in Ca9Bi(VO4)(7) with a transition temperature, T-c of 1053 +/- 3 K. The polar phase, beta-Ca9Bi(VO4)(7), is stable below T-c down to at least 160 K. The centrosymmetric beta'-phase is stable above T-c up to 1273 +/- 5 K. Above 1273 K, it decomposes to give BiVO4 and whitlockite-type solid solutions of Ca9+1.5xBi1-x(VO4)(7). The beta<---->beta' phase transition is reversible and of second order. Electrical conductivity of beta'-Ca9Bi(VO4)(7) is rather high (sigma = 0.6 x 10(-3) S/cm at 1200 K) and obeys the Arrhenius law with an activation energy of 1.0 eV. Structure parameters of Ca9Bi(VO4)(7) are refined by the Rietveld method from XRD data measured at room temperature (space group R3c; Z = 6; a = 10.8992(1) Angstrom, c = 38.1192(4) Angstrom, and V = 3921.6(1) Angstrom(3); R-wp = 3.06% and R-p = 2.36%). Bi3+ ions together with Ca2+ ions are statistically distributed among the M1, M2, M3, and M5 sites. Ca9Bi(VO4)(7) has a SHG efficiency of about 140 times that of quartz. Through the powder SHG measurements, we estimated the nonlinear optical susceptibility, Digital, at about 6.1-7.2 pm/V. This value for Ca9Bi(VO4)(7) is comparable with that for known nonlinear optical materials such as LiNbO3 and LiTaO3.

Abstract We report the complete disappearance of the structural modulation in heavily lead-doped Bi2-xPbxSr2CaCu2O8+delta crystals observed by transmission electron microscopy. Crystals with a nominal lead content of x = 0.8, corresponding to an effective lead content of x = 0.39, yield the non-modulated phase. The superconducting properties of this modulation-free phase (beta phase) have been studied and compared to those of undoped crystals displaying the modulated phase (alpha phase). Magnetisation measurements reveal that the irreversibility field H-irr(T) and relaxation rates are strongly improved within the beta phase. Measurements of the lower critical field, H-c1, show that the anisotropy factor, epsilon, is considerably reduced in the modulation-free crystals. This is the signature of stronger coupling between CuO2 layers which in turn deeply influences the effectiveness of the pinning. These measurements explain the enhanced pinning properties in moderately Pb-doped crystals in which the alpha phase and beta phase coexist. The enhanced pinning is not only due to the alpha/beta interfaces, which act as effective pinning centers: the emergence of modulation-free domains, characterized by a strongly reduced anisotropy, also significantly contribute to this effect.   Abstract The influence of the amount of catalyst and the reaction time on the quantity and quality of catalytically grown single wall carbon nanotubes (SWNT) was investigated. The aim was to optimize some of the SWNT growth parameters using TEM and HRTEM. The thickness of catalyst layer influences the synthesis of the nanotube because the gas composition can differ between top and bottom. Microscopic investigation of the grown SWNT samples showed that the thicker the catalyst layer the lower relative nanotube content, so the deeper parts of the catalyst layer are less effective: The optimum time for the reaction was found to be 10 minutes. This may be understood assuming that nanotube growth needs an initial incubation time while the activity of the catalyst decreases steadily until the nariotube growth stops.

Abstract Tetrahedral chain ordering in the Sr2MnGaO5 structure is studied using electron diffraction (ED) and high-resolution electron microscopy. The ED patterns show the presence of satellite reflections, which indicate a commensurately modulated structure with a = 5.4056(8) Angstrom b 16.171(3) Angstrom, c = 5.5592(7) Angstrom, q – 1/2c*, superspace group Immma(00gamma,)s00. The Superstructure arises due to ordering of the two types of symmetry related tetrahedral chains (L and R) according to a ... LRLR ... sequence, where L and R chains alternate along the c-axis within the same (GaO) layer. Numerous defects at different structural levels were observed, comprising interleaving L and R chains, violation of the ... LRLR ... chain sequence within one layer, different stacking modes of the ... LRLR ... ordered layers with subsequent alternation of blocks of different width along the h-axis of the brownmillerite subcell and island fragmentation of the modulated superstructure. By in situ heating ED experiments it is found that the long-range ordering of the tetrahedral chains is stable tip to 665degreesC and is completely suppressed at 905degreesC. (C) 2003 Elsevier Inc.   Abstract High-resolution transmission electron microscopy was performed on compacted Ni(3)Al nanostructured material prepared by the inert gas condensation technique. From electron diffraction data an incomplete L1(2) ordering of the crystallites is observed in the free particles as well as in the room temperature compacted samples. However, a completely ordered L1(2) structure with much bigger and well-defined crystallites exhibiting several defects is observed in material compacted and annealed at 773 K. Sharp crystallite boundaries as well as amorphous material and voids are observed in between crystallites in all samples, the former being dominant in the annealed material, the latter in the as-prepared one.

Abstract 'Colossal magnetoresistance' in perovskite manganites such as La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 (LCMO), is caused by the interplay of ferro-paramagnetic, metal-insulator and structural phase transitions. Moreover, different electronic phases can coexist on a very fine scale resulting in percolative electron transport. Here we report on (LCMO)(1-x):(MgO)(x) (0 < x less than or equal to 0.8) epitaxial nano-composite films in which the structure and magnetotransport properties of the manganite nanoclusters can be tuned by the tensile stress originating from the MgO second phase. With increasing x, the lattice of LCMO was found to expand, yielding a bulk tensile strain. The largest colossal magnetoresistance of 10(5)% was observed at the percolation threshold in the conductivity at x(c) approximate to 0.3, which is coupled to a structural phase transition from orthorhombic (0 < x less than or equal to 0.1) to rhombohedral R (3) over barc structure (0.33 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.8). An increase of the Curie temperature for the R (3) over barc phase was observed. These results may provide a general method for controlling the magnetotransport properties of manganite-based composite films by appropriate choice of the second phase.
