  Title Biaxially aligned yttria stabilized zirconia and titanium nitride layers deposited by unbalanced magnetron sputtering Type A1 Journal article

  Abstract Control of the texture and the biaxial alignment of sputter deposited films has provoked a great deal of interest due to its technological importance. indeed, many physical properties of thin films are influenced by the biaxial alignment. In this context, extensive research has been established to understand the growth mechanism of biaxially aligned Yttria Stabilized Zirconia (YSZ) as a buffer layer for high temperature superconducting copper oxides. In this work, the growth mechanism in general and the mechanism responsible of the biaxial alignment in detail were investigated for thin films of YSZ and TiN deposited by unbalanced magnetron sputtering using non-aligned polycrystalline stainless steel substrates. The mechanism responsible for the preferential out-of-plane alignment has been investigated by performing depositions on a non-tilted substrate. However, to study the in-plane alignment a tilted substrate was used. The microstructure of the deposited layers was characterised by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). The crystallographic alignment has been investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) (angular scans and pole figures) and by Selective Area Diffraction (SAD). It was observed that the deposited layers show a zone T or zone II structure and the layers with a zone T structure consist of faceted grains. There seems to be a correlation between the crystal habit of these faceted grains and the measured biaxial alignment. A model for the preferential out-of-plane orientation, the in-plane alignment and the correlation between the microstructure and the biaxial alignment is proposed.

  Abstract Materials with low dielectric constant ("low-k'') in combination with Cu metallization are replacing the oxide based dielectrics with Al metallization in future generations of micro-electronic devices. In this work, a carbon doped oxide low-k dielectric material is studied after different kinds of etch/strip steps in single damascene Cu. filled line structures. Interline capacitance measurements indicate a dependence of the dielectric constant on the strip conditions. EFTEM is used to study the composition of the dielectric material and the modification of the low-k material at the sidewall of the etched structures for the various treatment conditions.

  Abstract Rutherford backscattering and channeling spectrometry (RBS), photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) have been used to investigate macroscopic and microscopic segregation in MOCVD grown InGaN layers. The PL peak energy and In content (measured by RES) were mapped at a large number of distinct points on the samples. An indium concentration of 40%, the highest measured in this work, corresponds to a PL peak of 710 nn strongly suggesting that the light-emitting regions of the sample me very indium-rich compared to the average measured by RES. Cross-sectional TEM observations show distinctive layering of the InGaN films. The TEM study further reveals that these layers consist of amorphous pyramidal contrast features with sizes of order 10 nm The composition of these specific contrast features is shown to be In-rich compared to the nitride matrix.

  Title Stability of vortex-antivortex “molecules” in mesoscopic superconducting triangles Type A1 Journal article
  Year 2005 Publication Abbreviated Journal
  Volume Issue Pages 191-196
  Keywords A1 Journal article; Electron Microscopy for Materials Science (EMAT);
  Abstract We have revealed thermodynamically stable vortex-antivortex configurations in mesoscopic type I superconducting equilateral triangles. The revealed effect is explained by two factors: (i) vortex confinement in mesoscopic triangles and (ii) appearance of the vortex-antivortex repulsion in mesoscopic type I superconductor triangles in the vicinity of the dual point. The stability of the obtained solutions is examined as a function of material and external parameters – the Ginzburg-Landau parameter K and temperature – as well as a function of a distortion of the sample's shape. The vortex-antivortex. “molecule” turns out to be stable in a wide range of the parameters that makes it possible its experimental visualization.

  Title Study of the thermal decomposition of melt-quenched Ni-rich metastable bcc and amorphous Ni-Zr alloys Type A1 Journal article
  Year 1998 Publication International journal of non-equilibrium processing Abbreviated Journal Int J Non-Equilib Pr
  Volume 10 Issue 3-4 Pages 265-282

  Abstract The phase transformation sequences during thermal decomposition are investigated for Ni-rich melt-quenched body-centred cubic (bcc) and amorphous Ni-Zr alloys. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) are used to determine the structure of crystallization products occurring after heating the melt-spun ribbon samples to various degrees of the phase transformation process monitored by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). A single DSC peak is observed for both the bcc and amorphous Ni(91)Zr(9) alloys and a two-step process is indicated by DSC for the amorphous Ni(90)Zr(10) alloy. In the bcc-Ni(91)Zr(9) alloy which is actually a Ni(Zr) solid solution phase, the phase transformation starts with the precipitation of Ni(5)Zr crystallites followed, after a sufficient depletion of the matrix in Zr, by the subsequent transformation of the bcc-Ni(Zr) lattice to face-centred cubic (fcc) Ni. In the amorphous alloy of the same composition, the final products are fcc-Ni and Ni(5)Zr but at intermediate stages of the phase transformation, bcc-Ni(Zr) crystallites also appear. In the a-Ni(90)Zr(10) alloy the first DSC peak corresponds to the formation of the bcc-Ni(Zr) phase which then decomposes (second DSC peak) to the equilibrium phases fcc-Ni and Ni(5)Zr. Thus, in addition to the previous observation of the formation of the metastable bcc-Ni(Zr) phase by rapid quenching from the melt, here we present evidence that this phase can form also after partial crystallization of metallic glasses of appropriate chemical compositions.

  Title Observations of intermetallic compound formation of hot dip aluminized steel Type A1 Journal article
  Year 2006 Publication Aluminium alloys: part 1-2 Abbreviated Journal
  Volume 519-521 Issue 1-2 Pages 1871-1875
  Keywords A1 Journal article; Electron microscopy for materials research (EMAT)
  Abstract A hot dip aluminizing process to simulate the continuous galvanizing line (CGL) was carried out in three successive steps by a hot dip simulator: the pre-treatment for removing scales on the 200 x 250 mm(2) and 1mm in thickness cold rolled steel sheet, the dipping in 660 degrees C Al-Si melt for 3s and the cooling. In a pre-treatment, the steel specimen was partly coated by Au to confirm the mechanism of intermetallic compound (IMC) formation. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses were followed to observe the cross-section and the distribution of the elements. The specimen was analyzed in the boundary of the dipped-undipped part to see the formation mechanism of the aluminized steel. An intermetallic compound (IMC) is rapidly developed and grown in the steel-liquid interface. It has been usually reported that the IMC was formed by the dissolution of iron in the steel substrate toward the melt and the diffusion of aluminum in an opposite direction. The specimen is covered with aluminum-10 wt.% silicon, forms the IMC in the part that was not Au coated. However, IMC is not formed in the Au-coated part. The interface of the dipped-undipped is also analyzed by EDX. At the interface of the steel-IMC, it is clearly shown that the IMC is only formed in the dipped part and exists in the steel substrate as well, and contributes by iron, aluminum and silicon. The result clearly shows that only aluminum diffuses into the steel substrate without the dissolution of iron and forms the IMC between the steel substrate and the melt. Au coating and the short dipping time prevent the iron from dissolving into the aluminum melt. By TEM combined with focused ion beam (FIB) sample preparation, the IMC is confirmed as Fe2SiAl8, a hexagonal structure with space group P6(3)/mmc.

  Abstract Transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction proved chain/ladder incommensurate single crystal structure of investigated samples. The incommensurate ratio was determined from the X-ray and electron diffraction being equal to 0.704. Diffuse scattering intensities localised on the planes perpendicular to the c*-axis and passing through the spots originating from the periodicity of chain sublattice were detected. High-angle grain boundary or twinning formed by rotation of 33.3 degrees around [100] direction was observed. High-resolution electron microscopy images revealed the stacking faults in ac planes.

  Abstract In this work we present for the first time, to our knowledge, the CVD epitaxial growth of beta -SiC using an ion beam synthesized (IBS) beta -SiC layer as seed, which has been formed by multiple implantation into Si wafers at 500 degreesC. The ion beam synthesized continuous layer is constituted by beta -SiC nanocrystals that are well oriented relative to the silicon substrate. Comparison of the epitaxial growth on these samples with that on silicon test samples, both on and off-axis, is performed. The results show that the epitaxial growth can be achieved on the IBS samples without the need of the carbonization step and that the structural quality of the CVD layer is comparable to that obtained on a carbonized silicon sample. Improvement of the quality of the deposited layer is proposed.

  Abstract Several TEM techniques are used to characterise the local structure of low dimensional forms of carbon. HREM is particularly useful to describe the defect structure of thin films of diamond or fullerenes and C-60-C-70 nanoclusters. A columnar form of graphite is analysed, mainly by electron diffraction which allowed us to propose a growth mechanism. Diffraction contrast dark field microscopy, in combination with electron diffraction, allows a detailed characterisation of carbon nanotubes; e.g. the chirality distribution of tubes in ropes of single wall tubes is studied by selected area electron diffraction.   Abstract The recently discovered superconducting mercury-based cuprates HgBa2Can-1CunO2n+2+delta have proved difficult to synthesize as single phases and are sensitive to environment (CO2, moisture). The present paper gives an overview of new series mercury based superconductors, whose stabilisation is based on the fact that a foreign cation with a higher valency than Hg(II) must be introduced in the mercury layers, in order to fill up partially the oxygen vacancies of these layers. By this method, several new series of superconductors involving strontium instead of barium with critical temperatures ranging from 27 K to 95 K have been isolated : Hg0.5Bi0.5Sr2-xLaxCuO4+delta, Hg(0.5)Bi(0.5)Sr(2)Ca(1-x)R(x)Cu(2)O(6+delta) (R Y, Nd, Pr), Pb0.7Hg0.3Sr2-xLaxCuO4+delta, Pb(0.7)Hg(0.3)Sr(2)Ca(1-x)R(x)Cu(2)O(6+delta) (R = Y, Nd) Hg(1-x)Pr(x)Sr(2)A(1-x')Pr(x') Cu2O6+delta (A = Sr, Ca), Pb0.7Hg0.3Sr2Cu2CO3O7 and Hg1-xCrxSr2CuO4+delta. The behaviour of the praseodymium cuprates that exhibit a rather sharp transition and reach a Tc of 85 K is especially discussed. A method to synthesize new ''Ba-Hg'' superconducting cuprates with the 1212 structure at normal pressure with a Tc up to 110 K is also presented.

  Keywords A1 Journal article; Electron Microscopy for Materials Science (EMAT);
  Abstract Native wheat starch was oxidized by benign acidic bromate in water at room temperature. HPLC-ELSD study indicated that starch degraded in the course of oxidation but it still had a polymeric structure characterized by H-1, C-13, HSQC and HMBC NMR measurements. Products were generally water-soluble fragments but the use of a short reaction time and dilute reaction mixture yielded water-insoluble products. Titration of the products showed, that the increase of the starch content and reaction time increased the content of carbonyl and carboxyl groups in the range of 0.5-2.5% and 1.7-17.2%, respectively, in the product fragments. A mechanism for the oxidation reaction was proposed. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
