Abstract |
Results are discussed of a transmission electron microscopy study of high-dose oxygen implanted silicon. In addition to the general high temperature (> 1200-degrees-C) annealing treatments also annealings at 'low' temperatures (1000-1100-degrees-C) were performed in order to slow down the precipitate and defect reactions. The observed dissolution of the oxide precipitates during prolonged high temperature annealing is explained by critical radius considerations. Threading dislocations are the remaining lattice defects in the silicon overlayer and cannot be removed by further annealing. Low temperature annealing results in the formation and subsequent unfaulting of extrinsic stacking fault loops below the buried oxide layer. |

Abstract |
Colors in many paintings of great art historical value have changed over time, due to the combined effects of natural ageing, accumulated surface grime, and materials added during later conservation treatments. The physical restoration of the colors in such paintings is not possible. This article describes one part of work done to digitally restore the colors of Van Gogh's painting Field with Irises near Arles, dating from May 1888. We have used multispectral reflectance data to estimate absorption K and backscattering S parameters of Kubelka-Munk 2-constant theory. This was done for all 13 pigments known to have been used by Van Gogh in this painting, and based on this the concentration maps for each of these pigments were calculated. We validated the calculated concentration maps in several ways. For some pigments, we were able to predict spots on the painting where the pigment is expected to occur in unmixed form based on visual examination. For several other pigments, the concentration maps could be shown to agree with XRF data. Finally, for some other pigments the concentration maps were supported by additional evidence from microscopic examinations, remarks in Van Gogh's letters and from early color reproductions. For the 1.7 million pixels for which multispectral data is available, the average color difference between the calculated and measured spectral reflectance curves is CIEDE2000 = 1.05. This further confirms that the Kubelka-Munk calculations are well suited to describe the variety of spectral reflectance on the painting. |

Abstract |
We studied the coupled impurity states in a freestanding semiconductor nanowire (NW), within the effective mass approximation and including the effect of the dielectric mismatch, by using finite element method. Bonding and anti-bonding states are found and their energies converge with increasing distance di between the two impurities. The dependence of the binding energy on the wire radius R and the distance di between the two impurities is investigated, and we compare it with the result of a freestanding NW that contains a single impurity. |

Abstract |
We study the phase transition into the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state in high magnetic field in quasi-one dimensional superconductors within the quasi-classical formalism, taking into account the interchain Josephson coupling and the paramagnetic spin splitting. We show that anomalies in the field-direction dependence of the upper critical field when the magnetic field length equals to the FFLO period, previously described in [29], are characterized by the lock-in effect of the FFLO modulation wave vector, which is governed by the magnetic length. |

Abstract |
Various low temperature treatments of Ni50.6Ti49.4 have shown an unexpected effect on the martensitic start temperature. Periodic diffuse intensity distributions in reciprocal space indicate the formation of short pure Ni strings along the <111> directions in the B2 ordered lattice, precursing the formation of Ni4Ti3 precipitates formed at higher annealing temperatures. |

Abstract |
We propose a scheme to generate the entangled state of two Lambda-type three-level atoms trapped in a cavity. The atoms are initially prepared in their excited state and the cavity in vacuum state. Each atom has two possibilities to deexcite to one of the ground states. If two different polarized photons are detected subsequently, it is sure that both atoms are in different ground states. But which atom is in which ground state cannot be determined, the atoms are thus prepared in a superposition of two ground states, i.e., an entangled state. In comparison with the proposal of Hong and Lee [Phys. Rev. Lett. 89, 237901 (2002)], the requirement of a single polarized photon source can be avoided in our scheme. |

Abstract |
Energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (XRF) is an attractive analytical method to determine the level of air pollution by heavy metals. The concentration of the filter in ng/cm(2) is obtained by direct comparison of the net characteristic line intensity of an element with that of a thin film standard. As the sampled area on the filter and the area of the standard are larger than the area analysed by the instrument, the distribution of the elements on the surface of both samples and standards have to be sufficiently uniform. If this is not the case, biased concentration estimates are obtained. Two scanning macro-XRF setups with a beam diameter of similar to 0.5 mm were used to investigate the distribution of elements in (1) commercially available (Micromatter) standards, (2) in-house quartz filter standards obtained with an aerosol generator and (3) particulatematter (PM10) collected on quartz filters by a Leckel SEQ 47/50 sampler. The uniformity of the Micromatter standards was better than 2%. At least some in-house standards showed a concave distribution with less material at the edges. The maximum bias introduced by this is less than 5%. Because of the limited sensitivity of scanning XRF compared with conventional XRF, the distribution of only a few common elements like Ca and Fe could be determined reliably in aerosol filters. The distribution of some heavy elements could only be measured in filters sampled in polluted regions. In general, the loading of particulate matter over the filters was uniform. Abstract |
The treatment of sp2 carbon materials, including micrographite, nanographite, HOPG, onion-like-carbon, and single-walled carbon nanotubes, in a 3:1 sulfuric to nitric acid mixture produced photoluminescent reaction solutions. These colloidal, aqueous solutions appeared photoluminescently stable under a UV lamp and ranged in color from red to blue. The photoluminescent wavelength shifted to shorter wavelength with increasing reaction time or increasing reaction temperature. Raman spectroscopy showed evidence of defect structures in graphitic residue, and transmission electron microscopy showed unusual structures present in the supernatant including graphitic balls. |

Abstract |
The structure and surface morphology of aluminum and silver mirrors covered with protective dielectric oxide layer were studied by means of TEM and SEM. The presence of needle-like pores throughout the thickness of the ZrO(2) film and bubble-like pores in Al(2)O(3) was observed. The test for resistivity to deuterium ion bombardment shows that the exposition to a fluence of similar to 2 x 10(20) ions/cm(2) with the ion energy of 40-50 eV results in appearance of blisters on the surface of mirrors covered wit h Al(2)O(3). For the mirrors protected with ZrO(2) no noticeable changes in surface morphology and reflectivity were found even after order of magnitude higher ion fluence. The effect of different porous structures on blistering phenomena is discussed. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. |

Abstract |
Infrared absorption spectra of composite precipitates are analysed with a modified Day-Thorpe algorithm, assuming a precipitated phase consisting of a mixture of two components with known optical properties. Additional constraints are introduced when solving the model equations by using a priori knowledge making the algorithm more reliable. It is shown that this novel approach allows determining both morphology and composition of precipitates. The method is applied to characterise oxide precipitates in boron-doped silicon. The results indicate that for the resistivity range above 60 mOmegacm, the precipitated phase is most probably SiO1.17+/-0.14, while for resistivities below 20 mOmega cm, precipitates consist of a SiO2/B2O3 composite with a large volume fraction of B(2)0(3) (up to 40% for 8 mOmegacm material).
