Title Electron microscopy and X-ray structural investigations of incommensurate spin-ladder Sr4.1Ca4.7Bi0.3Cu17O29 single crystals Type A1 Journal article
Year 2000 Publication Acta physica Polonica: A: general physics, solid state physics, applied physics Abbreviated Journal Acta Phys Pol A
  Volume 98 Issue 6 Pages 729-737
Keywords A1 Journal article; Electron microscopy for materials research (EMAT)
Abstract Transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction proved chain/ladder incommensurate single crystal structure of investigated samples. The incommensurate ratio was determined from the X-ray and electron diffraction being equal to 0.704. Diffuse scattering intensities localised on the planes perpendicular to the c*-axis and passing through the spots originating from the periodicity of chain sublattice were detected. High-angle grain boundary or twinning formed by rotation of 33.3 degrees around [100] direction was observed. High-resolution electron microscopy images revealed the stacking faults in ac planes.

Title Electron microscopy and X-ray study of the growth of FeCr2S4 spinel single crystals by chemical vapour transport Type A1 Journal article
Year 1993 Publication Crystal research and technology Abbreviated Journal Cryst Res Technol
  Volume 28 Issue 8 Pages 1051-1061
Keywords A1 Journal article; Electron microscopy for materials research (EMAT)
Abstract The growth features of FeCr2S4 spinel single crystals prepared by chemical vapour transport were studied by means of scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, high resolution electron microscopy, electron diffraction and X-ray analysis. Our results indicate that the epitaxial growth of the new phases FeCr7S12 and FeCr8S12, both based on the NiAs structure, can essentially inhibit the growth of large FeCr2S4 spinel single crystals in the octahedral habit. The new phases are fully characterised and the effects of defect ordering in these new phases are also reported.

Title Electron-microscopy investigation of superconducting la2cu(o, f)4+y oxyfluoride Type A1 Journal article
Year 1993 Publication European journal of solid state and inorganic chemistry Abbreviated Journal
  Volume 30 Issue 11 Pages 1095-1108
Keywords A1 Journal article; Electron microscopy for materials research (EMAT)
Abstract The fluorination of La2CuO4 can lead to different oxyfluoride compounds depending on the TF2 temperature of the fluorine gas treatment. When 150-degrees-C T(F2) less-than-or-equal-to 200-degrees-c less-than-or-equal-to 200-degrees-C a superconducting material is obtained. Previous neutron diffraction experiments as well as the EXAFS measurements at the La L(III) edge indicate that extra anions lie in an interstitial site between the two (LaO) layers. Electron diffraction patterns clearly show the existence of an incommensurate modulation due to the presence of shear planes. A second phase is also pointed out which can be obtained as a major component when the fluorination temperature is raised to 230-degrees-C. This phase which is not a superconductor crystallizes with the monoclinic symmetry.

Title Electron microscopy investigation of ternary \gamma-brass-type precipitation in a Ni39.6Mn47.5Ti12.9 alloy Type A1 Journal article
Year 1999 Publication Philosophical magazine: A: physics of condensed matter: defects and mechanical properties Abbreviated Journal Philos Mag A

Keywords A1 Journal article; Engineering sciences. Technology; Electron microscopy for materials research (EMAT); Laboratory Experimental Medicine and Pediatrics (LEMP)
Abstract Homogenized Ni39.6Mn47.5T12.9 material was investigated by different electron microscopy techniques. Apart from the martensite precursor distortions typical for B2 phase alloys undergoing a thermoelastic martensitic transformation upon cooling, coherent dodecahedron-shaped precipitates with sizes between 20 and 100 nm and faceted by lozenge shapes of {110}-type planes are observed. Selected-area and microdiffraction patterns reveal an overall unit cell with a size of 3 x 3 x 3 units of the bcc lattice of the matrix and a body-centred symmetry without screw axes. Finally a ternary gamma-brass-type atomic structure of space group 14(3) over bar m is suggested for these precipitates in accordance with the obtained symmetry constraints, the energy-dispersive X-ray measurements and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy images. This is the first time this type of structure is found in an alloy completely consisting of transition-metal elements.

Abstract Nb-rich nanoprecipitates in the matrix of an annealed commercial NiTiNb alloy are investigated by scanning and transmission electron microscopy, including slice-and-view and chemical analysis. The precipitates have a diameter of around 100 nm, are faceted and have a cube-on-cube relation with the B2 matrix. In situ TEM cooling shows that the martensitic transformation is hampered by the presence of these precipitates. The latter could explain the increase in hysteresis when compared with the binary system.

Abstract The 3D reconstruction of a tilt series for electron tomography is mostly carried out using the weighted backprojection (WBP) algorithm or using one of the iterative algorithms such as the simultaneous iterative reconstruction technique (SIRT). However, it is known that these reconstruction algorithms cannot compensate for the missing wedge. Here, we apply a new reconstruction algorithm for electron tomography, which is based on compressive sensing. This is a field in image processing specialized in finding a sparse solution or a solution with a sparse gradient to a set of ill-posed linear equations. Therefore, it can be applied to electron tomography where the reconstructed objects often have a sparse gradient at the nanoscale. Using a combination of different simulated and experimental datasets, it is shown that missing wedge artefacts are reduced in the final reconstruction. Moreover, it seems that the reconstructed datasets have a higher fidelity and are easier to segment in comparison to reconstructions obtained by more conventional iterative algorithms.

Title Electron vortex beams in a magnetic field : a new twist on Landau levels and Aharonov-Bohm states Type A1 Journal article

Abstract We examine the propagation of the recently discovered electron vortex beams in a longitudinal magnetic field. We consider both the Aharonov-Bohm configuration with a single flux line and the Landau case of a uniform magnetic field. While stationary Aharonov-Bohm modes represent Bessel beams with flux- and vortex-dependent probability distributions, stationary Landau states manifest themselves as nondiffracting Laguerre-Gaussian beams. Furthermore, the Landau-state beams possess field- and vortex-dependent phases: (i) the Zeeman phase from coupling the quantized angular momentum to the magnetic field and (ii) the Gouy phase, known from optical Laguerre-Gaussian beams. Remarkably, together these phases determine the structure of Landau energy levels. This unified Zeeman-Landau-Gouy phase manifests itself in a nontrivial evolution of images formed by various superpositions of modes. We demonstrate that, depending on the chosen superposition, the image can rotate in a magnetic field with either (i) Larmor, (ii) cyclotron (double-Larmor), or (iii) zero frequency. At the same time, its centroid always follows the classical cyclotron trajectory, in agreement with the Ehrenfest theorem. Interestingly, the nonrotating superpositions reproduce stable multivortex configurations that appear in rotating superfluids. Our results open an avenue for the direct electron-microscopy observation of fundamental properties of free quantum-electron states in magnetic fields.

Abstract Ultrafine ZnO nanocrystals with a thickness down to 0.25 nm are grown by a metalorganic chemical vapor deposition method. Electronic band structures and native point defects of ZnO nanocrystals are studied by a combination of scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy and first-principles density functional theory calculations. Below a critical thickness of nm ZnO adopts a graphitic-like structure and exhibits a wide band gap similar to its wurtzite counterpart. The hexagonal wurtzite structure, with a well-developed band gap evident from scanning tunneling spectroscopy, is established for a thickness starting from similar to 1.4 nm. With further increase of the thickness to 2 nm, V-O-V-Zn defect pairs are easily produced in ZnO nanocrystals due to the self-compensation effect in highly doped semiconductors.
