Abstract: The electron transport properties in delta-doped semiconductor systems-are studied. The subband electronic structure of the delta-doped system is obtained by solving the coupled Schrodinger and Poisson equations. The screening of the quasi-two-dimensional electron gas is taken into account for the ionized impurity scattering through the matrix dielectric function within the random-phase approximation. The quantum and transport mobilities are calculated numerically as a function of the total electron density and the width of the doped layer at zero temperature. The intersubband scattering and the effect of empty subbands above the Fermi level on the electron mobilities are investigated. The calculated mobilities are in reasonable agreement with the available experimental results.

Abstract: The electro-phonon resonance effect is a consequence of a resonant interaction between two electric subbands mediated by an optical phonon. It occurs in a quasi-two-dimensional electron system each time the energy difference between two electric subbands equals the energy of a Lo phonon. We study the influence of this effect on the electron mobility by using the momentum balance equation. The temperature and electron density dependences of the resonances are studied in the linear and non-linear response regimes.

Abstract: In the present paper, the theory of the large bipolaron is reviewed and the possibility of bipolaron formation in the high-T(c) superconductors is indicated. Operator and path-integral formulations of the large bipolaron problem are compared. In the strong-coupling limit, the effect of non-optimal upper-bounds to the single-polaron groundstate energy is emphasized. The fact that the interaction with multiple phonon branches enhances the electron-phonon interaction and might result in a larger stability region for bipolaron formation is indicated. Experimental values for the static and high-frequency dielectric constants are used to discuss the relevance of bipolaron formation as a pair-forming mechanism in the high-T(c) superconductors.

“Quantum transport of a two-dimensional electron gas in a spatially modulated magnetic field”. Peeters FM, Vasilopoulos P, Physical review : B : condensed matter and materials physics 47, 1466 (1993). http://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.47.1466
Abstract: Electrical transport properties of a two-dimensional electron gas axe studied in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field B modulated weakly and periodically along one direction, B = (B + B0 cos Kx)z, with B0 much less than B, K = 2pi/a, and a being the period of the modulation. B0 is taken constant or proportional to B. The Landau levels broaden into bands and their width, proportional to the modulation strength B0, oscillates with B and gives rise to oscillations in the magnetoresistance at low B. These oscillations reflect the commensurability between the cyclotron diameter at the Fermi level and the period a and consequently hey are distinctly different from the Shubnikov-de Ha.as ones, at higher B, in period and temperature dependence. The bandwidth at the Fermi energy can be one order of magnitude larger, at low B, than that of the electric case for equal modulation strengths. The resulting magnetoresistance oscillations have a much higher amplitude than those of the electric case with which they are out of phase. Explicit asymptotic expressions are derived for the temperature dependence of the transport coefficients. The case when both electric and magnetic modulations are present is also considered. The position of the resulting oscillations depends on the ratio delta between the two modulation strengths. When the modulations are out of phase there is no shift in the position of the oscillations when delta varies and for a particular value of delta the oscillations are suppressed.

Abstract: Nowadays the electronic structure calculations allow the study of complex systems determining the hyperfine parameters measured at a probe atom, including the presence of crystalline defects. The hyperfine electric parameters have been measured by Mossbauer spectroscopy in silicon materials implanted with Mn-57 ->,Fe-57 ions, observing four main contributions to the spectra. Nevertheless, some ambiguities still remain in the Fe-57 Mossbauer spectra interpretation in this case, regarding the damage configurations and its evolution with annealing. In the present work several implantation environments are evaluated and the Fe-57 hyperfine parameters are calculated. The observed correlation among the studied local environments and the experimental observations is presented, and a tentative microscopic description of the behavior and thermal evolution of the characteristic defects local environments of the probe atoms concerning the location of vacancies and interstitial Si in the neighborhood of Fe-57 ions in substitutional and interstitial sites is proposed. Abstract: We investigate the self-assembly of vortices in a type-II superconducting disk subjected to highly nonuniform confining potentials produced by inhomogeneous magnetic textures. Using a series of numerical experiments performed within the Ginzburg–Landau theory, we show that vortices can arrange spontaneously in highly nonuniform, defect-free crystals, reminiscent of conformal lattices, even though the strict conditions for the conformal crystal are not fulfilled. These results contradict continuum-limit theory, which predicts that the order of a nonuniform crystal is unavoidably frustrated by the presence of topological defects. By testing different cooling routes of the superconductor, we observed several different self-assembled configurations, each of which corresponding to one in a set of allowed conformal transformations, which depends on the magnetic and thermal histories of the system.

“Valley filtering in graphene due to substrate-induced mass potential”. da Costa DR, Chaves A, Farias GA, Peeters FM, Journal of physics : condensed matter 29, 215502 (2017). http://doi.org/10.1088/1361-648X/AA6B24
Abstract: The interaction of monolayer graphene with specific substrates may break its sublattice symmetry and results in unidirectional chiral states with opposite group velocities in the different Dirac cones (Zarenia et al 2012 Phys. Rev. B 86 085451). Taking advantage of this feature, we propose a valley filter based on a transversal mass kink for low energy electrons in graphene, which is obtained by assuming a defect region in the substrate that provides a change in the sign of the substrate-induced mass and thus creates a non-biased channel, perpendicular to the kink, for electron motion. By solving the time-dependent Schrodinger equation for the tight-binding Hamiltonian, we investigate the time evolution of a Gaussian wave packet propagating through such a system and obtain the transport properties of this graphene-based substrate-induced quantum point contact. Our results demonstrate that efficient valley filtering can be obtained, provided: (i) the electron energy is sufficiently low, i.e. with electrons belonging mostly to the lowest sub-band of the channel, and (ii) the channel length (width) is sufficiently long (narrow). Moreover, even though the transmission probabilities for each valley are significantly affected by impurities and defects in the channel region, the valley polarization in this system is shown to be robust against their presence.

Abstract: A theoretical and experimental study of the work function of few-layer graphene is reported. The influence of the number of layers on the work function is investigated in the presence of a substrate, a molecular dipole layer, and combinations of the two. The work function of few-layer graphene is almost independent of the number of layers with only a difference between monolayer and multilayer graphene of about 60 meV. In the presence of a charge-donating substrate the charge distribution is found to decay exponentially away from the substrate and this is directly reflected in the work function of few-layer graphene. A dipole layer changes the work function only when placed in between the substrate and few-layer graphene through a change of the charge transfer between the two.

“Magnetotransport in a pseudomorphic GaAs/Ga0.8In0.2As/Ga0.75Al0.25As heterostructure with a Si \delta-doping layer”. van der Burgt M, Karavolas VC, Peeters FM, Singleton J, Nicholas RJ, Herlach F, Harris JJ, Van Hove M, Borghs G, Physical review : B : condensed matter and materials physics 52, 12218 (1995). http://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.52.12218
Abstract: Magnetotransport properties of a pseudomorphic GsAs/Ga0.8In0.2As/Ga0.75Al0.25As heterostructure are investigated in pulsed magnetic fields up to 50 T and at temperatures of T = 1.4 and 4.2 K. The structure studied consists of a Si delta layer parallel to a Ga0.8In0.2As quantum well (QW). The dark electron density of the structure is n(c) = 1.67 x 10(16) m(-2). By illumination the density can be increased up to a factor of 4; this way the second subband in the Ga0.08In0.2As QW can become populated as well as the Si delta layer. The presence of electrons in the delta layer results in drastic changes in the transport data, especially at magnetic fields beyond 30 T. The phenomena observed are interpreted as (i) magnetic freeze-out of carriers in the delta layer when a low density of electrons is present in the delta layer, and (ii) quantization of the electron motion in the two-dimensional electron gases in both the Ga0.8In0.2As QW and the Si delta layer in the case of high densities. These conclusions are corroborated by the numerical results of our theoretical model. We obtain satisfactory agreement between model and experiment.

Abstract: We have developed a microscopic theory which describes the orientational dynamics of C-70 molecules and its coupling to lattice displacements in the face-centered-cubic phase of C-70 fullerite. The single-molecule orientational density distribution in the disordered phase is calculated. The ferroelastic transition to the rhombohedral phase is investigated. The discontinuity of the orientational order parameter at the phase transition is calculated. It is found that the transition leads to a stretching of the primitive unit cell along a [111] cubic direction. A softening of the elastic constant c(44) at the transition is predicted.

Abstract: Hot-electron transport is studied for a two-dimensional electron gas coupled to longitudinal-optical phonons in crossed electric and magnetic fields. At low electric and high magnetic fields the electrons are accumulated, while at high electric fields they are in a streaming state. We develop a streaming-to-accumulation transition model and compare the results with that from a Monte Carlo simulation.

Abstract: In the limit of strong electron-phonon coupling, we use either a Pekar-type or an oscillator wave function for the center-of-mass coordinate and either a Coulomb or an oscillator wave function for the relative coordinate, and are able to reproduce all the results from the literature for the large-bipolaron binding energy. Lower bounds are constructed for the critical ratio eta(c) of dielectric constants below which bipolarons can exist. It is found that, in the strong-coupling limit, the stability region for bipolaron formation is much larger in two dimensions (2D) than in 3D. We introduce a model that combines the averaging of the relative coordinate over the asymptotically best wave function with a path-integral treatment of the center-of-mass motion. The stability region for bipolaron formation is increased compared with the full path-integral treatment at large values of the coupling constant alpha. The critical values are alpha(c) almost-equal-to 9.3 in 3D and alpha(c) almost-equal-to 4.5 in 2D. Phase diagrams for the presented models are also obtained in both 2D and 3D.

Abstract: Multishell carbon nanotubules are studied by means of diffraction contrast dark field images. This results in an electron microscopy method for the determination of the sign of the chiral angles in carbon nanotubes. The method is justified by a reasoning either in direct space or in diffraction space.
