“Influence of fixation procedures on the microanalysis of lead-induced intranuclear inclusions in rat kidney”. Vandeputte DF, Jacob WA, Van Grieken RE, The journal of histochemistry and cytochemistry 38, 331 (1990). http://doi.org/10.1177/38.3.2154517
Abstract: Using Laser Microprobe Mass Analysis (LAMMA), we studied the chemical composition of lead-induced intranuclear inclusions in rat kidney tissue prepared by three different wet chemical fixation procedures for transmission electron microscopy. Fixation with glutaraldehyde-Na2S gave the same results as fixation with glutaraldehyde only: a high lead concentration could be detected. Therefore, for lead strongly bound to proteins, precipitation procedures are not essential. Post-fixation with osmium tetroxide drastically changed the composition of the inclusions: the lead concentration decreased substantially, while sodium, calcium, and barium were introduced. The osmium tetroxide fixative was found to be the source of the contamination. It also contained aluminum, and we suggest that other proteins (e.g., in neurofibrillary tangles) might be able to take up Al out of solution and that care must be exercised in interpreting the microanalytical results of osmium-fixed material. For the microanalysis of the lead inclusions, fixation with glutaraldehyde only provides a good compromise between preservation of the ultrastructure and maintenance of the element distribution.

“New anion-conducting solid solutions Bi1-xTex(O,F)2+\delta (x >, 0.5) and glassceramic material on their base”. Prituzhalov VA, Ardashnikova EI, Vinogradov AA, Dolgikh VA, Videau J-J, Fargin E, Abakumov AM, Tarakina NV, Van Tendeloo G, Journal of fluorine chemistry 132, 1110 (2011). http://doi.org/10.1016/j.jfluchem.2011.06.042
Abstract: The anion-excess fluorite-like solid solutions with general composition Bi1−xTex(O,F)2+δ (x > 0.5) have been synthesized by a solid state reaction of TeO2, BiF3 and Bi2O3 at 873 K with following quenching. The homogeneity areas and polymorphism of the I ↔ IV Bi1−xTex(O,F)2+δ phases were investigated. The crystal structure of the low temperature IV-Bi1−xTex(O,F)2+δ phase has been solved using electron diffraction and X-ray powder diffraction (a = 11.53051(9) Å, S.G. Ia-3, RI = 0.046, RP = 0.041). Glass formation area in the Bi2O3BiF3TeO2 (10% TiO2) system was investigated. IVBi1−xTex(O,F)2+δ phase starts to crystallize at short-time (0.53 h) annealing of oxyfluoride glasses at temperatures above Tg (600615 K). The ionic conductivity of the crystalline Bi1−xTex(O,F)2+δ phase and corresponding glass-ceramics was investigated. Activation energy of conductivity Ea = 0.41(2) eV for the IV-Bi1−xTex(O,F)2+δ crystalline samples and Ea = 0.73 eV for the glass-ceramic samples were obtained. Investigation of the oxyfluoride samples with a constant cation ratio demonstrates essential influence of excess fluorine anions on the ionic conductivity.

“Microstructure and phase transitions in Pb(Sc0.5Ta0.5)O3”. Lemmens H, Richard O, Van Tendeloo G, Bismayer U, Journal of electron microscopy 48, 843 (1999). http://doi.org/10.1093/oxfordjournals.jmicro.a023756
Abstract: The microstructure and phase transitions in the perovskite-based ferroelectric lead scandium tantalate, Pb(Sc0.5Ta0.5)O-3 have been investigated by transmission electron microscopy. The effects of ordering of Sc and Ta cations are apparent in reciprocal space as well as in direct space images. High-resolution observations allow direct structure imaging of the domain structure. The structure of the low temperature ferroelectric phase is studied by selected area electron diffraction (SAED) and electron microdiffraction. The relaxer behaviour of this paraelectric-ferroelectric transition is displayed by diffuse intensities in the SAED patterns at temperatures around the Curie point.

“Grain-boundary engineering for aging and slow-crack-growth resistant zirconia”. Zhang F, Chevalier J, Olagnon C, Batuk M, Hadermann J, Van Meerbeek B, Vleugels J, Journal of dental research 96, 774 (2017). http://doi.org/10.1177/0022034517698661
Abstract: Ceramic materials are prone to slow crack growth, resulting in strength degradation over time. Although yttria-stabilized zirconia (Y-TZP) ceramics have higher crack resistance than other dental ceramics, their aging susceptibility threatens their long-term performance in aqueous environments such as the oral cavity. Unfortunately, increasing the aging resistance of Y-TZP ceramics normally reduces their crack resistance. Our recently conducted systematic study of doping 3Y-TZP with various trivalent cations revealed that lanthanum oxide (La2O3) and aluminum oxide (Al2O3) have the most potent effect to retard the aging kinetics of 3Y-TZP. In this study, the crack-propagation behavior of La2O3 and Al2O3 co-doped 3Y-TZP ceramics was investigated by double-torsion methods. The grain boundaries were examined using scanning transmission electron microscopy and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (STEM-EDS). Correlating these analytic data with hydrothermal aging studies using different doping systems, a strategy to strongly bind the segregated dopant cations with the oxygen vacancies at the zirconia-grain boundary was found to improve effectively the aging resistance of Y-TZP ceramics without affecting the resistance to crack propagation.

“A 2a2a3c superstructure in hexagonal Ni1-xS : a study by means of electron-diffraction and HRTEM”. Lioutas CB, Manolikas C, Van Tendeloo G, van Landuyt J, Journal of crystal growth 126, 457 (1993). http://doi.org/10.1016/0022-0248(93)90051-W
Abstract: The high temperature phase of Ni1-xS has the NiAs-type structure. The coexistence of two superstructures, ''3a3a3c'' and ''2a2a3c'' with the basic phase is confirmed by means of electron diffraction. The 2a2a3c superstructure is studied by means of electron diffraction and high resolution electron microscopy. A structure model is proposed based on the periodic insertion of stacking faults in the NiAs-type basic structure and the ordering of vacancies in alternate metal-atom layers. Microtwinning in very narrow slabs is found to be a main feature of the 2a2a3c regions and two defect models are discussed.

Abstract: The YbRuSn ternary system was investigated and a new material, Yb0.24Sn0.76Ru, with a simple cubic crystal structure, was discovered. Yb0.24Sn0.76Ru has a smaller lattice parameter a=3.217(4) Å, than its isostructural YbRu analogue (a=3.360 Å). Both X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy techniques were used to refine the crystal structure of Yb0.24Sn0.76Ru. It was found that a new compound forms in the CsCl structure, with Ru on the 1a site and a (Yb, Sn) mixture on site 1b. The XRD Rietveld analysis provides the occupation of Yb equal to 0.24, in agreement with the single crystal nano-electron diffraction refinement, which gives the occupation 0.21.

Abstract: High-quality single crystals of Rb2ZnCl4 and K2ZnCl4, pure or doped with Cu, Mn, Cd, Tl, Sn, Pb and In cations, were grown by Czochralski technique in argon atmosphere, using an experimental setup that allows direct visual access to the whole growth zone. Slowly cooled crystals exhibit excellent cleavage properties. Fastly cooled crystals do cleave poorly. As shown by X-ray diffraction studies, such K2ZnCl4 samples exhibit inclusions of the high-temperature Pmcn phase with lattice parameters a = 7.263(2) Angstrom, b = 12.562(2) Angstrom and c = 8.960(4) Angstrom in the P2(1) cn room temperature stable phase. ESR and optical spectroscopy studies revealed the localization and valence state of the cation dopants. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: This HREM investigation focuses on the influence of point defects on the final epitaxial relation and atomic interface configuration in a CoSi2/Si(1 0 0) heterostructure. A two-step SPE-MBE grown CoSi2/Si(1 0 0) system is used and, by altering the number of deposited Co monolayers in the template layer, the point defect behavior is studied. We propose a film growth model in which the knowledge about the reconstructed (2 x 1) : Si(1 0 0) surface, the point defect behavior in the presence of an interface, especially a silicide interface, the migration of point defects through a lattice by formation of [1 0 0]-split interstitial (dumbbell) atomic configurations, and a new type of extended defect configurations in diamond type materials will all amalgamate. Abstract: Yittria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) films doped with 3 and 9 vol%. Y(2)O(3), respectively, are epitaxially deposited on (0 0 1) silicon substrates by means of pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction are mainly combined to study the film microstructure. It is: found that the film structure strongly depends on the amount of Y(2)O(3) dopant. 99/0 Y(2)O(3)-doped films display a near cubic structure; 45 degrees 1/2(1 1 0) dislocations are the main defects in the film and thermal cracks are formed during cooling. The 3% Y(2)O(3)-doped films are dominated by {1 1 0} twin-related tetragonal domains in which monoclinic phase is found. The films are free of thermal cracks even for films thicker than 2 mum. “Study of the nucleation and growth of TiO2 and ZnO thin films by means of molecular dynamics simulations”. Baguer N, Georgieva V, Calderin L, Todorov IT, van Gils S, Bogaerts A, Journal of crystal growth 311, 4034 (2009). http://doi.org/10.1016/j.jcrysgro.2009.06.034
Abstract: The nucleation and growth of titanium dioxide (TiO2) and zinc oxide (ZnO) thin films on Fe2O3 (hematite), Al2O3 (á-alumina) and SiO2 (á-quartz) are studied by molecular dynamics simulations. The results show the formation of a strong interface region between the substrate and the film in the six systems studied here. A combination of polycrystalline and amorphous phases are observed in the TiO2 films grown on the three substrates. ZnO deposition on the Fe2O3 and Al2O3 crystals yields a monocrystalline film growth. The ZnO film deposited on the SiO2 crystal exhibits less crystallinity. The simulation results are compared with experimental results available in the literature.
