“A new Bi4Mn1/3W2/3O8Cl Sillén-Aurivillius intergrowth: synthesis and structural characterisation by quantitative transmission electron microscopy”. Avila-Brande D, Otero-Díaz LC, Landa-Cánovas AR, Bals S, Van Tendeloo G, European journal of inorganic chemistry , 1853 (2006). http://doi.org/10.1002/ejic.200501021
Abstract: The synthesis and structural characterisation of a new phase with nominal composition Bi4Mn1/3W2/3O8Cl is presented. Conventional and analytical transmission electron microscopy are used to determine the composition, unit-cell symmetry and space group of the compound, whereas a structural model is deducted by exit-wave reconstruction in the transmission electron microscope. This technique allows the microscope information limit of 1.1 angstrom to be reached and the (light) oxygen atoms in the presence of heavier atoms (Bi, W, Mn) to be imaged. The average structure is refined from Xray powder diffraction data using the Rietveld method yielding an orthorhombic unit cell with lattice parameters a 5.467(4) angstrom, b = 5.466(7) angstrom and c = 14.159(3) angstrom and space group Cm2m, which could be described as a Sillen-Aurivillius intergrowth. “Detailed modeling of hydrocarbon nanoparticle nucleation in acetylene discharges”. de Bleecker K, Bogaerts A, Goedheer W, Physical review : E : statistical physics, plasmas, fluids, and related interdisciplinary topics 73, 026405 (2006). http://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevE.73.026405
Abstract: The initial stage of nanoparticle formation and growth in radiofrequency acetylene (C2H2) plasmas is investigated by means of a self-consistent one-dimensional fluid model. A detailed chemical kinetic scheme, containing electron impact, ion-neutral, and neutral-neutral reactions, has been developed in order to predict the underlying dust growth mechanisms and the most important dust precursors. The model considers 41 different species (neutrals, radicals, ions, and electrons) describing hydrocarbons (CnHm) containing up to 12 carbon atoms. Possible routes for particle growth are discussed. Both positive and negative ion reaction pathways are considered, as consecutive anion- and cation-molecule reactions seem to lead to a fast build up of the carbon skeleton.

“Statistical estimation of atomic positions from exit wave reconstruction with a precision in the picometer range”. Bals S, Van Aert S, Van Tendeloo G, Avila-Brande D, Physical review letters 96, 096106 (2006). http://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.96.096106
Abstract: The local structure of Bi4W2/3Mn1/3O8Cl is determined using quantitative transmission electron microscopy. The electron exit wave, which is closely related to the projected crystal potential, is reconstructed and used as a starting point for statistical parameter estimation. This method allows us to refine all atomic positions on a local scale, including those of the light atoms, with a precision in the picometer range. Using this method one is no longer restricted to the information limit of the electron microscope. Our results are in good agreement with x-ray powder diffraction data demonstrating the reliability of the method. Moreover, it will be shown that local effects can be interpreted using this approach.

Abstract: Here we summarize results from our study of the critical depinning current J(c) versus the applied magnetic flux Phi, for: (i) quasiperiodic (QP) one-dimensional (1D) chains and (ii) 2D arrays of pinning centers placed on the nodes of a five-fold Penrose lattice. In 1D QP chains, the peaks in J(c)(Phi) are determined by a sequence of harmonics of the long and short segments of the chain. The critical current J(c)(Phi) has a remarkable self-similarity. In 2D QP pinning arrays, we predict analytically and numerically the main features of J(c)(Phi), and demonstrate that the Penrose lattice of pinning sites provides an enormous enhancement of J(c)(Phi), even compared to triangular and random pinning site arrays. This huge increase in J(c)(Phi) could be useful for applications. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: A straightforward application of the theoretical framework presented by Verbeeck et al. [Ultramicroscopy 102 (2005) 239] is presented to explain the energy-filtered electron-diffracted beam holography experiments published by Herring [Ultramicroscopy 104 (2005) 261]. It is shown that the theory is in agreement with all experimental findings, which leads to the interpretation that the experiments are mainly measuring the angular coherence of the source image rather than exposing details on the coherence properties of inelastic scattering. A change in experimental parameters is proposed, which could result in interesting information about the coherence in all inelastic scattering process. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: Finite and infinite three-dimensional dust systems and their configurational and transport properties are investigated by Molecular Dynamics simulation. The model dust-dust interaction potential includes an attraction part. Spherical dust clusters or balls are found and their structural and transport properties studied. Qualitatively, the cluster structure agrees well with recent experimental results.
