“Hydrothermal synthesis of carbonate-free submicron-sized barium titanate from an amorphous precursor : synthesis and characterization”. Özen M, Mertens M, Luyten J, Snijkers F, d' Hondt H, Cool P, Ceramics international 38, 619 (2012). http://doi.org/10.1016/j.ceramint.2011.07.051
Abstract: In this paper, the amorphous barium titanate precursor was prepared by the peroxo-hydroxide method and post-treated by various drying procedures, such as: room temperature drying, room temperature vacuum drying and vacuum drying at 50 degrees C. The objective in the latter two treatments was to increase the Ti-O-Ba bonds of the precursor. The post-treated precursors were compared with the untreated (i.e., 'wet') precursor. Also, a barium titanate precursor was prepared by an alkoxide route. Afterwards, the precursors were hydrothermally treated at 200 degrees C in a 10 M NaOH solution. Vacuum drying of the precursor seemingly promoted the formation of Ti-O-Ti bonds in the hydrothermal end-product. The low Ba:Ti ratio (0.66) of the alkoxide-route prepared precursor lead to a multi-phase hydrothermal product with BaTiO(3) as the main phase. In contrast, phase pure BaTiO(3), i.e. without BaCO(3) contamination, was obtained for the precursor which was dried at room temperature. Cube-shaped and highly crystalline BaTiO(3) particles were observed by electron microscopy for the hydrothermally treated peroxo-hydroxide-route prepared precursor. “Phase assembly and microstructure of CeO2-doped ZrO2 ceramics prepared by spark plasma sintering”. Xu T, Wang P, Fang P, Kan Y, Chen L, Vleugels J, Van der Biest O, van Landuyt J, Journal of the European Ceramic Society 25, 3437 (2005). http://doi.org/10.1016/j.jeurceramsoc.2004.09.004
Abstract: CeO2-doped ZrO2, (8 mol%) starting powder was sintered by means of spark plasma sintering (SPS) at 1300 degrees C without holding time. The stability of the tetragonal ZrO2 phase in the Ce-ZrO2 ceramic sintered under strongly reducing conditions was investigated. The SPS sample consisted of monoclinic and tetragonal ZrO2 phase, with a volume ratio of two to one, as well as a trace amount of a Zr-Ce-O cubic solid solution phase. In contrast, the same powder sintered by hot-pressing in nitrogen at 1300 and 1500 degrees C for 1h showed no tetragonal ZrO2. Microstructural observation of the SPS ceramic by SEM and TEM revealed grains with and without twins. The reason for the appearance of the tetragonal phase in the SPS sample sintered under strongly reducing conditions is discussed. (c) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

“Texturing of hydrothermally synthesized BaTiO3 in a strong magnetic field by slip casting”. Özen M, Mertens M, Snijkers F, Van Tendeloo G, Cool P, Ceramics international 42, 5382 (2016). http://doi.org/10.1016/j.ceramint.2015.12.073
Abstract: Barium titanate powder was processed by slip casting in a rotating strong magnetic field of 9.4 T. The orientation factor of the sintered compact was analyzed by the X-ray diffraction technique and the microstructure (grain-size) was analyzed by scanning electron microscope. The hydrothermally prepared barium titanate was used as matrix material and the molten-salt synthesized barium titanate, with a larger particle-size, was used as template for the templated grain-growth process. Addition of large template particles was observed to increase the orientation factor of the sintered cast (5 vol% loading). Template particles acted as starting grains for the abnormal grain-growth process and the average grain-size was increased after sintering. Increasing the solid loading (15 vol%) resulted in a similar orientation factor with a decrease of the average grain size by more than half. However, addition of templates to the 15 vol% cast had a negative effect on the orientation factor. The impingement of growing particles was stated as the primary cause of particle misorientation resulting in a low orientation factor after sintering. Different heating conditions were tested and it was determined that a slow heating rate gave the highest orientation factor, the smallest average grain-size and the highest relative density. “A cyclic catalyst pretreatment in CO2 for high yield production of Carbon nanofibers with narrow diameter distribution”. Corthals S, van Noyen J, Liang D, Ke X, Van Tendeloo G, Jacobs P, Sels B, Catalysis letters 141, 1621 (2011). http://doi.org/10.1007/s10562-011-0690-3
Abstract: This paper presents a cyclic catalyst pretreatment process to improve the CNF yield with narrow size distribution by sequentially feeding the CVD reactor with CH4/CO2 mixtures (carbon deposition) and CO2 (carbon removal) prior to the actual growth process. A mechanism based on a break-up of large Ni particles tentatively explains the beneficial effect of the cyclic carbon deposition/removal CVD procedure.

“Novel functional imaging of changes in small airways of patients treated with extrafine beclomethasone/formoterol”. Vos W, de Backer J, Poli G, De Volder A, Ghys L, Van Holsbeke C, Vinchurkar S, De Backer L, de Backer W, Respiration 86, 393 (2013). http://doi.org/10.1159/000347120
Abstract: Background: Inhaled formulations using extrafine particles of long-acting beta(2)-agonists and corticosteroids were developed to optimize asthma treatment. Findings that these combinations reach and treat smaller airways more effectively are predominantly based on general non-specific outcomes with little information on regional characteristics. Objectives: This study aims to assess long-term effects of extrafine beclomethasone/formoterol on small airways of asthmatic patients using novel functional imaging methods. Methods: Twenty-four stable asthma patients were subdivided into three groups (steroid naive, n = 7; partially controlled, n = 6; well controlled, n = 11). Current treatment was switched to a fixed combination of extrafine beclomethasone/formoterol (Foster (R); Chiesi Pharmaceuticals, Parma, Italy). Patients underwent lung function evaluation and thorax high-resolution computerized tomography (HRCT) scan. Local airway resistance was obtained from computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Results: After 6 months, the entire population showed improvement in pre-bronchodilation imaging parameters, including small airway volume (p = 0.0007), resistance (p = 0.011), and asthma control score (p = 0.016). Changes in small airway volume correlated with changes in asthma control score (p = 0.004). Forced expiratory volume in 1 s (p = 0.044) and exhaled nitric oxide (p = 0.040) also improved. Functional imaging provided more detail and clinical relevance compared to lung function tests, especially in the well-controlled group where only functional imaging parameters showed significant improvement, while the correlation with asthma control score remained. Conclusions: Extrafine beclomethasone/formoterol results in a significant reduction of small airway obstruction, detectable by functional imaging (HRCT/CFD). Changes in imaging parameters correlated significantly with clinically relevant improvements. This indicates that functional imaging is a useful tool for sensitive assessment of changes in the respiratory system after asthma treatment. Copyright (C) 2013 S. Karger AG, Basel

“Investigation of 50 Hz pulsed DC nitrogen plasma with active screen cage by trace rare gas optical emission spectroscopy”. Saeed A, Khan AW, Shafiq M, Jan F, Abrar M, Zaka-ul-Islam M, Zakaullah M, Plasma science &, technology 16, 324 (2014). http://doi.org/10.1088/1009-0630/16/4/05
Abstract: Optical emission spectroscopy is used to investigate the nitrogen-hydrogen with trace rare gas (4% Ar) plasma generated by 50 Hz pulsed DC discharges. The filling pressure varies from 1 mbar to 5 mbar and the current density ranges from 1 mA.cm(-2) to 4 mA.cm(-2). The hydrogen concentration in the mixture plasma varies from 0% to 80%, with the objective of identifying the optimum pressure, current density and hydrogen concentration for active species ([N] and [N-2]) generation. It is observed that in an N-2-H-2 gas mixture, the concentration of N atom density decreases with filling pressure and increases with current density, with other parameters of the discharge kept unchanged. The maximum concentrations of active species were found for 40% H-2 in the mixture at 3 mbar pressure and current density of 4 mA.cm(-2).

“The influence of the secondary electron emission coefficient and effect of the gas heating on the calculated electrical characteristics of a grimm type glow discharge cell”. Derzsi A, Donko Z, Bogaerts A, Hoffmann V, , 285 (2008)
Abstract: Electron emission properties of cathode surfaces affect considerably the electrical characteristics of glow discharges. Using a heavy-particle hybrid model ill 2 dimensions, we investigate the influence of the secondary electron emission coefficient gamma oil the calculated discharge characteristics for both 'clean' and 'dirty' cathode surface conditions, and assuming a constant gamma parameter as well. The effect of the gas heating and the role of the heavy particles reflected from the cathode on this process is also studied.

Abstract: Ag nanocluster-doped glasses have been prepared by a conventional melt-quenching method. The effect of melt temperature and dwell time on the formation of Ag nanoclusters and Ag nanoparticles in simple host oxyfluoride glasses has been studied. The increase of melt temperature and dwell time results in the dissolution of Ag nanoparticles and substantial red-shift of absorption and photoluminescence spectra of the prepared glasses. The quantum yield of the glasses is similar to 5% and does not depend on melt temperature and dwell time. The prepared glasses may be used as red phosphors or down-conversion layers for solar-cells.

Abstract: Few-electron systems confined in two-dimensional parabolic quantum dots at high magnetic fields are studied by the Hartree-Fock (HF) and exact diagoiialization methods. A generalized multicenter Gaussian basis is proposed in the HF method. A comparison of the HF and exact, results allows as to discuss the relevance of the symmetry of the charge density distribution for the accuracy of the HF method. It is shown that the energy estimates obtained with the broken-symmetry HF wave functions become exact in the infinite magnetic-field limit. In this limit the charge density of the broken-symmetry solution call be identified with the classical charge distribution.

Abstract: In principle, transport of charged carriers in nanometer sized solid-state devices can be fully characterized once the non-equilibrium distribution function describing the carrier ensemble is known. In this light, we have revisited the Boltzmann and the Wigner distribution functions and the framework in which they emerge from the classical respectively quantum mechanical Liouville equation. We have assessed the method of the characteristic curves as a potential workhorse to solve the time dependent Boltzmann equation for carriers propagating through spatially non-uniform systems, such as nanodevices. In order to validate the proposed solution strategy, we numerically solve the Boltzmann equation for a one-dimensional conductor mimicking the basic features of a biased low-dimensional transistor operating in the on-state. Finally, we propose a computational scheme capable of extending the benefits of the above mentioned solution strategy when it comes to solve the Wigner-Liouville equation.
