Abstract We propose an improved image simulation procedure for atomic-resolution annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) based on the multislice formulation, which takes thermal diffuse scattering fully into account. The improvement with regard to the classical frozen phonon approach is realized by separating the lattice configuration statistics from the dynamical scattering so as to avoid repetitive calculations. As an example, the influence of phonon scattering on the image contrast is calculated and investigated. STEM image simulation of crystals can be applied with reasonable computing times to problems involving a large number of atoms and thick or large supercells.

Abstract The measurement of the electronic structure of anisotropic materials using energy loss near edge structure (ELNES) spectroscopy is an important field of microanalysis in transmission electron microscopy. We present a novel method to study the angular dependence of electron inelastic scattering in anisotropic materials. This method has been applied to the study of 1s -> pi* and sigma* transitions on the carbon K edge in pyrolitic graphite. An excellent agreement between experimental and theoretical two-dimensional scattering patterns has been found. In particular, the need of a fully relativistic calculation of the inelastic scattering cross-section to explain the experimental results is demonstrated. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract Using the combination of an electron biprism and an energy filter, the coherence distribution in an inelastically scattered wave-field is measured. It is found that the degree of coherence decreases rapidly with increasing distance between two superimposed points in the object, and with increasing energy-loss. In a Si sample, coherence of plasmon scattering increases in vacuum with the distance from the edge of the sample. (c) 2006 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Volume 106 Issue 6 Pages 461-465
Keywords A1 Journal article; Electron microscopy for materials research (EMAT)
Abstract A straightforward application of the theoretical framework presented by Verbeeck et al. [Ultramicroscopy 102 (2005) 239] is presented to explain the energy-filtered electron-diffracted beam holography experiments published by Herring [Ultramicroscopy 104 (2005) 261]. It is shown that the theory is in agreement with all experimental findings, which leads to the interpretation that the experiments are mainly measuring the angular coherence of the source image rather than exposing details on the coherence properties of inelastic scattering. A change in experimental parameters is proposed, which could result in interesting information about the coherence in all inelastic scattering process. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Title Model-based quantification of EELS spectra: including the fine structure Type A1 Journal article

Abstract An extension to model-based electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) quantification is reported to improve the possibility of modelling fine structure changes in electron energy loss spectra. An equalisation function is used in the energy loss near edge structure (ELNES) region to model the differences between a single atom differential cross section and the cross section for an atom in a crystal. The equalisation function can be shown to approximate the relative density of unoccupied states for the given excitation edge. On a set of 200 experimental h-BN spectra, this technique leads to statistically acceptable models resulting into unbiased estimates of relative concentrations and making the estimated precisions come very close to the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB). The method greatly expands the useability of model-based EELS quantification to spectra with pronounced fine structure. Another benefit of this model is that one also gets an estimate of the unoccupied density of states for a given excitation edge, without having to do background removal and deconvolution, making the outcome intrinsically more reliable and less noisy. Abstract We present an efficient method for the quantification of crystalline versus amorphous phase content in mesoporous materials, making use of electron energy loss spectroscopy. The method is based on fitting a superposition of core-loss edges using the maximum likelihood method with measured reference spectra. We apply the method to mesoporous TiO2 samples. We show that the absolute amount of the crystalline phase can be determined with an accuracy below 5%. This method takes also the amorphous phase into account, where standard X-ray diffraction is only quantitative for crystalline phases and not for amorphous phase. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V.. Abstract We have revealed thermodynamically stable vortex-antivortex configurations in mesoscopic type I superconducting equilateral triangles. The revealed effect is explained by two factors: (i) vortex confinement in mesoscopic triangles and (ii) appearance of the vortex-antivortex repulsion in mesoscopic type I superconductor triangles in the vicinity of the dual point. The stability of the obtained solutions is examined as a function of material and external parameters – the Ginzburg-Landau parameter K and temperature – as well as a function of a distortion of the sample's shape. The vortex-antivortex. “molecule” turns out to be stable in a wide range of the parameters that makes it possible its experimental visualization.

Abstract We study the confinement of a C-60 molecule encapsulated in a cylindrical nanotube as a function of the tube radius. Drawing the Mercator maps of the potential, we find two distinct molecular orientations; for tubes with small radii, R-T less than or similar to 7 angstrom, a fivefold axis of the molecule coincides with the tube long axis, for larger radii, R-T less than or similar to 8 angstrom, a threefold axis of the molecule coincides with the tube long axis. These different orientations are caused by the relative importance of the repulsive and the attractive parts of the van der Waals potentials of the molecule with the tube wall for small and large tubes respectively. Experimental evidence is provided by the apparent splitting of A(g) modes of the C-60 molecule in resonant Raman scattering.

Abstract A system of classical charged particles interacting through a dipole repulsive potential, which are confined in a two-dimensional hardwall trap, is studied. The cluster consists of 16 particles, together with 4 defect particles. The technique of Brownian dynamics is used to simulate experimental binary colloidal systems [1]. The melting properties and the reentrant behavior of the system, which was studied before for clusters of identical particles [2], are studied for the binary mixture. The defect particles, which have a smaller charge than the other particles, stabilize the cluster, melt at a higher value of the coupling parameter F as compared to the other particles and have a strong influence on the melting properties of the other particles.

Abstract The spin-polarized transport property of a diluted magnetic semiconductor two-dimensional electron gas is investigated theoretically at low temperature. A large current polarization can be found in this system even at small magnetic fields and oscillates with increasing magnetic field while the carrier polarization is vanishingly small. The magnitude as well as the sign of the current polarization can be tuned by varying magnetic field, the electron density and the Mn concentration. (c) 2005 American Institute of Physics.

Title Transmission electron microscopy and electron energy-loss spectroscopy analysis of manganese oxide nanowires Type A1 Journal article

Abstract Single-crystalline MnOOH and Mn3O4 nanowires have been prepared by hydrothermal treatment of commercial bulky manganese oxide particles. beta-MnO2 and alpha-Mn2O3 nanowires were prepared by calcination of MnOOH nanowires. Transmission electron microscopy analysis demonstrates that MnOOH nanowires grow directly from MnO2 raw particles. The diameter of the nanowires is 20-70 nm, while the length can reach several micrometers. MnOOH nanowires grow preferentially along the [010] direction and Mn3O4 nanowires prefer to grow along the [001] direction; the long dimension of both beta-MnO2 and alpha-Mn2O3 nanowires is along [001]. Electron energy-loss spectroscopy analysis shows that the position of the prepeak of the oxygen K edge shifts to higher energy and the energy separation between the two main peaks of the oxygen K edge decreases with decreasing manganese oxidation state. The manganese-white-line ratios (L-3/L-2) were calculated. (C) 2005 American Institute of Physics.
