Abstract: Recent measurements of the Josephson critical current through LSCO/LCO/LSCO thin films showed an unusually large proximity effect. Using the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations for a tight-binding Hamiltonian we describe the proximity effect in weak links between a superconductor with critical temperature T-c and one with critical temperature T-c('), where T-c > T-c('). The weak link (N-') is therefore a superconductor above its own critical temperature and the superconducting regions are considered to have either s-wave or d-wave symmetry. We note that the proximity effect is enhanced due to the presence of superconducting correlations in the weak link. The dc Josephson current is calculated, and we obtain a nonzero value for temperatures greater than T-c(') for sizes of the weak links that can be almost an order of magnitude greater than the conventional coherence length. Considering pockets of superconductivity in the N-' layer, we show that this can lead to an even larger effect on the Josephson critical current by effectively shortening the weak link.

“Impurity scattering of wave packets on a lattice”. Kim W, Covaci L, Marsiglio F, Physical Review B 74, 205120 (2006). http://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.74.205120
Abstract: Quantum transport in a lattice is distinct from its counterpart in continuum media. Even a free wave packet travels differently in a lattice than in the continuum. We describe quantum scattering in a one-dimensional lattice and illustrate characteristics of quantum transport such as resonant transmission. In particular we examine the transport characteristics of a random trimer model. We demonstrate the real-time propagation of a wave packet and its phase shift due to impurity configurations. Spin-flip scattering is also taken into account in a spin-chain system. We show how individual spins in the chain evolve as a result of a spin-flip interaction between an incoming electron and a spin chain.

Abstract: Correlated, or extended, impurities play an important role in the transport properties of dirty metals. Here, we examine, in the framework of a tight-binding lattice, the transmission of a single electron through an array of correlated impurities. In particular we show that particles transmit through an impurity array in identical fashion, regardless of the direction of traversal. The demonstration of this fact is straightforward in the continuum limit, but requires a detailed proof for the discrete lattice. We also briefly demonstrate and discuss the time evolution of these scattering states, to delineate regions (in time and space) where the aforementioned symmetry is violated.

Abstract: We consider magnetic flux moving in superconductors with periodic pinning arrays. We show that sample heating by moving vortices produces negative differential resistivity (NDR) of both N and S type (i.e., N- and S-shaped) in the voltage-current characteristic (VI curve). The uniform flux flow state is unstable in the NDR region of the VI curve. Domain structures appear during the NDR part of the VI curve of an N type, while a filamentary instability is observed for the NDR of an S type. The simultaneous existence of the NDR of both types gives rise to the appearance of striking self-organized (both stationary and nonstationary) two-dimensional dynamical structures.

Abstract: The local structure of Bi4W2/3Mn1/3O8Cl is determined using quantitative transmission electron microscopy. The electron exit wave, which is closely related to the projected crystal potential, is reconstructed and used as a starting point for statistical parameter estimation. This method allows us to refine all atomic positions on a local scale, including those of the light atoms, with a precision in the picometer range. Using this method one is no longer restricted to the information limit of the electron microscope. Our results are in good agreement with x-ray powder diffraction data demonstrating the reliability of the method. Moreover, it will be shown that local effects can be interpreted using this approach.

Abstract: Laser-assisted plasma spectrometry is a palette of analytical techniques (L-OES, LA-ICP-MS) capable of fast spatially-resolved elemental analysis in the micrometer range. For fast estimation of the occurrence in steel samples of non-metallic inclusions, which degrade the material's technical properties, simultaneous OES detection and sequential ICP-MS detection were compared. Histograms were obtained for the intensity distribution of the acquired signals (laser pulse statistics). The skewness coefficient of the histograms for Al (indicator of non-metallic inclusions) was found to be clearly dependent on the fraction of non-metallic inclusions in the case of scanning L-OES. For LA-ICP-MS less clear dependence was observed, which was influenced by the acquisition characteristics. In fact, less measurement throughput limited for LA-ICP-MS the counting statistics to an extent that overrides the benefit of higher detection power as compared to L-OES. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. “FIB, TEM and LA-ICPMS investigations on melt inclusions in Martian meteorites –, Analytical capabilities and geochemical insights”. Abstract: In order to obtain full information coverage on melt inclusions in Martian meteorites (subgroup nakhlites) complementary micro-analytical techniques were used, i.e. focused ion beam, transmission electron microscopy and laser ablation. Using focused ion beam several lamellae for transmission electron microscopy were prepared and secondary electron images of cross-sections could be acquired. Laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry analyses were performed on selected inclusions to obtain mass-oriented bulk composition of inclusions at depth. The differences in composition between melt inclusions in olivine and augite crystals would suggest a xenocrystic origin for olivine. Furthermore, electron diffraction patterns clearly indicated that the SiO2-rich phase in inclusions from augite in meteorites from Northwest Africa site is re-crystallized, whereas it is still vitreous in the inclusions from Nakhla sampling site. Therefore, different post-entrapment evolutions were active for the two nakhlite meteorite sets, the Nakhla and the NWA817 set. Melt inclusions in Nakhla olivine presented alteration veins, which were presumably produced before their landing on Earth. If this is the case, this would indicate a alteration stage already on Mars with all the consequence in terms of climate history. Melt inclusions in Nakhla augite resulted unaffected by any alteration or modification following the entrapment, and therefore represent the best candidate to indicate the pristine magma composition. Abstract: Energy filtered TEM, EFTEM, provides three-dimensional data, two spatial and one spectral dimension. We propose to acquire these data by measuring a series of images with a defocused energy filter. It will be shown that each image is a projection of the data on the detector and that reconstruction of the data out of a sufficient number of such projections using a tomographic reconstruction algorithm is possible. This technique uses only a fraction of the electron dose an energy filtered series (EFS) needs for the same spectral and spatial resolution and the same mean signal-to-noise ratio.
